I’ve seen odd names like Flomot, Talpa, Bangs, and Eola . . . colorful names like Blanket, Fate, Novice, and Nada (pronounced NAY-duh, for some odd reason) . . . and for the hungry traveler, temptation awaits you in Noodle, Oatmeal, Bacon, Turkey, and Pancake. So what would possess a man to up and leave the comforts of his home and family to drive more than three hours out west to Runnels County? Was it a burning quest for more names to add to

my list? Well, in this particular case, it was an invitation to play drums with Jody Nix and his Texas Cowboys at SPJST Lodge 49 in the cozy hamlet of Rowena! Jody Nix, left, Jody hails with Michael Morris. from Big Spring, Texas. With more than 60 years in the music business, Jody has been entertaining crowds since he first played drums in his father Hoyle Nix’s band at age 8. Jody’s band is one of the finest country and western dance bands in the southwest, and I was honored to be asked to share the stage with them. In addition to Jody (bandleader/fiddle/vocals), other band members were Robert Weeks (fiddle), Jim Loessberg (steel guitar), John Powell (bass guitar), and me on drums (I was filling in
