State Tournaments Begin with Progressive 42 Dominos
Congratulations to the 2014 State Progressive 42 Domino Tournament winners. SPJST State Progressive 42 Domino Tournament was hosted by members of Lodge 47, Seaton on Saturday, January 11, 2014. There were 20 players who registered to play in the tournament. Thank you to the members of Lodge 47 for the delicious kolaches and snacks during the morning’s eight rounds. At 12:15 p.m., we broke for lunch, and the lodge served grilled chicken, sausage, mashed potatoes, green beans, roll, and some wonderful desserts.
Little Things Can Make A Big Difference
Players returned to their sets and played seven more rounds. The last round was completed at 3:30 p.m. Door prizes were drawn while results were being tabulated. Door prize winners were Frank Klinkovsky, Carolyn Coufal, John Hosch, Florice Tydlacka, Arthur Toth, and Dot Hughes. District Seven Director Bob Bayer, pictured above, has encouraged lodges, youth clubs, members, and friends to save and collect canned drink tabs and used eyeglasses for more than 10 years. The tabs are donated to Ronald McDonald House who sells them to raise funds for the House. The eyeglasses are donated to the Lions Recycle for Sight program that distributes most of the eyeglasses to people in need in developing countries where they will have the greatest impact. “We collected another large

Submit your entry today! Awards Banquet This Saturday The annual SPJST Awards Banquet is this Saturday, January 25 at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. Doors open at 12 noon, and the banquet will begin at 1 p.m. Keynote speaker is Temple businessman and philanthropist Drayton McLane, Jr. Awards will be presented to local lodge fraternalists of the year, lodges, youth clubs, and sales agents. Photos of the fraternalist of the year nominees appear on pages 4 and 5 of this week’s Vestnik. The 2013 SPJST State Fraternalist of the Year will be announced at the banquet. Congratulations to all who are
being recognized at the banquet, and thanks for your service to SPJST. We appreciate you.

The Bathtub Test During a visit to the mental asylum, a visitor asked the director how do you determine whether or not a patient should be institutionalized. “Well,” said the director, “We fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup, and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bathtub.” “Oh, I understand,” said the visitor. “A normal person would use the bucket because it’s bigger than the spoon or the teacup.” “No.” said the director, “A normal person would pull the plug. Lodge 80, Holland member expresses scholarship appreciation
Dear Scholarship Committee, I would like to thank you for providing the funds to make this scholarship possible. Receiving this scholarship was not only a financial relief, but also an honor. As an incoming freshman petroleum engineering student, I view this scholarship as an investment in my college career. I was introduced to the Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering as a high school sophomore during a Future A&M Engineers (FAME) camp. I was immediately struck by the passion of the professors and students. I am looking forward to finding out even more over the next four years.
I have stayed involved in college by joining the Society of Petroleum Engineers and a sorority. These organizations have been a great way to get involved with philanthropic events in the Bryan/College Station area. This semester also held many career opportunities such as career fairs, company dinners, and internship interviews. I am pleased to say I will be interning in Arkansas for Southwestern Energy this summer. I cannot thank you enough for your generous donation that will greatly help me over the next four years. This past semester has been filled with many amazing experiences and rewarding opportunities. I am looking foward to learning all that I can and continuing to put this scholarship to good use. Lodge 6, Cottonwood will host this year’s SPJST State Tarok Tournament on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at the lodge hall. Lodge 6 Cottonwood reports on January meeting
President Milton Peterson called the meeting to order on Sunday, January 5, 2014, at 2 p.m. The youth led the Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST motto. A moment of silence was observed for the deceased of the lodge. Sister Georgie Soukup reported 17 members present. Sister Barbara Hykel read the minutes. Sister Peggy Dobecka read the treasurer’s report and gave the youth report. The youth made goodie bags for Christmas and delivered them to Quality Nursing Home. They also took down the decorations in the hall. Sister Evelyn Stuckly gave her FAC report. The awards banquet will be on Saturday, January 25 in Temple. Brother Jerry Kucera had no report. The Sunshine Committee sent a sympathy card to Joe and Dorothy Dvorsky on the loss of their son. Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek installed the 2014 officers. He also gave a very interesting talk. Brother Johnnie Krizan presented Boy Scout Austin Ball from Troop 494 with a check for their trip. Brother Johnnie Krizan gave a talk and the hall

report. Progressive door prize winner for $2 was Jennifer Kline. Since she was absent, next time it will be $3. Socials for February will be on the 7th and 21st. Lodge 15 Buckholts applies for grant for roof repair
The meeting was called to order at 5 p.m. by President Doug Williams. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Regina Peevey followed by a moment of silence in memory of departed members. All officers were present for the meeting. Motion was made to approve the minutes and treasurer’s report. In old business, we still have the problem of vehicles driving through our property instead of using the city
street. The county commissioner said he will continue working with this problem. We are so proud of our front entrance. President Williams thanked everyone who had a part in getting this accomplished. We especially want to thank Lamerle Zajicek for all her time and work she did in getting this done. Lamerle Zajicek has done so much for the lodge; it is our wish that she become our second vice president. Virgina Williams made the motion, seconded by Hilda Burtis. Motion carried. In new business, we are presently applying for a preservation grant to Milam County Historical Commission for help on replacing the roof. It is extremely urgent that we get something done to the roof to preserve the building as it leaks so badly. Thanks to Lamerle for submitting the proper paperwork in applying for this grant. Vice President A.W. Zajicek gave us a schedule of all upcoming SPJST events which includes the awards banquet on January 25. We are all looking forward to that. We are so pleased that we are one of the lodges that will receive an award. Virginia Williams made the motion that the meeting adjourn, seconded by Lamerle Zajicek. Motion carried. Door prizes were drawn followed by a delicious meal.

Hands Day is May 3. Brenda Maddux gave the youth report. Their meeting was Sunday, January 12 at Flag Hall. There were 15 members and seven adults present. The next youth club meeting will be at the Home Office on February 15 with skating after the meeting. Birthdays from the youth club are Steve Bruggman, Macey Malcik, Kim Malcik, and Kindred Evatt. Bar report was by Mark Maddux. He had several parties and did well on the money front. Our hall will be in demand in March as we have the SPJST State Straight Domino Tournament on the 1st in the morning then The Red Ravens that night. Our lodge will host the District Two Spring Meeting on March 15. Much time was spent working out details of the meals for these events. We were advised of the 50-year members from the Home Office. They are Mark Carter, Bonnie Gay Cobb, Richard W. Tepera, Linda Marie Wilde, and Wesley J. Williford. Seventy-five year members are Leroy Baca, Mary Anna Bartek, Helen L. Chollett, Delano Erwin Hensel, Wilmar Jones, Wilbert Mikeska, Dorothy Nell Urubek, and Clarence Zabcik. All pins will be mailed out by the Home Office. Dear Readers, Lodge 25, Ennis would like to express thanks to everyone who purchased apple strudels during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. We received orders from Arlington, Dallas, West, Temple, Waxahachie, and, of course, Ennis. The sale was a huge success again this year selling more than 320 strudels! Thanks to all of you, we surpassed our total sales from last year. Money earned from the sale will go toward debt owed on air conditioning repair. Lodge 29, Taylor plans March 1 auction fundraiser
Lodge 29, Taylor held its first meeting of 2014 on Wednesday, January 8. President Ronnie Rieger led the Pledge of Allegiance and held a moment of silence for our departed members and our servicemen. All officers were present. The December minutes were read and approved. Tammy Whatley gave the treasurer’s report. Sharon Kaderka informed us of several events coming up soon such as the State Progressive 42 Domino Tournament at Lodge 47,
Seaton on January 11, SPJST Awards Banquet on January 25 in Temple, State Tarok Tournament at Lodge 6, Cottonwood on February 1, and Texas Fraternal Bowling Tournament in New Braunfels on February 8. Jesse Pospisil gave the property committee report. We are putting up a fence along the north side of the property to prevent people from driving their vehicles across the neighbor’s right of way. Taylor Lions Club will host a chili supper on Thursday, January 23 at the hall. They will have dine in or take out. Jesse informed the members about the “Red Bowl Challenge” at Czech Heritage Museum. If every member of SPJST would donate $10, the museum loan would be paid off quickly. Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club, Ronnie and Lyn Rieger, and Kathryn Adamek made donations. Any member donating will get their name printed in the Vestnik. Cristy Girod reported the youth club had 12 youth and two guests at the last meeting. After their meeting, they went to Dairy Queen for ice cream. For Christmas, the youth club
adopted three needy families which included six adults and 13 children. They had a turkey/ham, dressing, etc. meal for the families, Santa came, and the youth members handed out gifts to the families. On Sunday, the youth will host a bingo hour with the residents of the S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Facility. Cristy also had blank forms available if anyone wanted to fill out about their memories of SPJST to get their name in a drawing for the gift basket. The form is also on the back of the Vestnik edition saluting the SPJST Youth Program that came out a week ago. Ronnie recognized our special guest, Fraternal Field Manager Hiram Dixon. Hiram congratulated the youth club for their outstanding contributions to the needy and in donating their time to visit with the residents of the assisted living facility. He is very proud of the work the youth club is doing. Hiram also reported on earned premiums and sales for District Two, and some changes they made in the products to streamline progress in the insurance sales.

Ronnie announced the annual Taylor SPJST auction fundraiser will be on Saturday, March 1 so we will be selling tickets soon. Lyn Rieger reported that she, Ronnie Rieger, and Jesse Pospisil presented gifts that Lodge 29 purchased for 18 S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1, Taylor residents they adopted for Christmas. Lyn also discussed a request for a donation from Taylor Garden Club Run for the Roses 5K to be held on January 25. The Garden Club gives scholarships to local youth and supports plantings and garden projects in parks and downtown. Cristy volunteered the youth club to assist in some way. Lyn was going to check if SPJST would donate water. Lyn also made a motion for Lodge 29 to donate $25, and Jesse Pospisil seconded. The motion passed. Albin Machu signed up new member Veronica Casarez. Connie Voigt made a motion to accept the new member, and Anton Pokorny seconded. The motion passed. The next Lodge 181, Conroe meeting will be held Monday, January 27, 2014, at Montgomery County Memorial Library System Central Branch, located at 104 I-45 North in Conroe, Texas 77301. This is on the northbound access road between Gladstell and 105/W Davis. This meeting will be held in the smaller meeting room, closest to the front door. This room does not have food preparation facilities, so attendees are asked to bring food items that do not require preparation, such as sandwiches, chips, and drinks. Happy New Year! Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy started 2014 with the first meeting of the year on Wednesday, January 8 with excitement of the upcoming year. The meeting was called to order by President Allen Trigg. Members then recited the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a prayer for the meal which was cooked
by member Harvey La Flamme. After everyone finished eating, the minutes from the last meeting were read by Secretary Blanche Shollenberger. After the minutes were read Treasurer/Fraternal Activities Coordinator David Nauert read his reports. He reminded members of upcoming events such as the State Progressive 42 Domino Tournament in Seaton (Lodge 200 Vice President James R. Virginia Marek, age 85, of West, passed away early Monday morning, November 18, 2013, in Waco. A rosary was recited at 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 20 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West with visitation following. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, November 21 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Virginia Marek of the Assumption, with Reverend Boniface Onjefu as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Virginia was born July 5, 1928, in West, the daughter of Walter J. and Aileen (Mudrick) Barak. She was a graduate of West High School. On October 14, 1946, she was united in marriage to Edward J. Marek in West. He preceded her in death on October 30,
1999. Virginia was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption. Virginia was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, and she loved gardening, canning, listening to Czech music and taking family trips. She especially loved to spend time with her family. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood. Virginia was also preceded in death by her parents; sons Frankie, Edward D., Larry, William, Joseph and John Marek; and brother Lawrence Barak. Survivors include daughters Mary Ann Stone and husband Clint of Axtell, Margaret Schroeder and husband Rick of Tours, and Teresa Kramolis and husband Mike of China Spring; brother Gerald Barak; granddaughters Krystal Luedecke and husband Ryan and Marisa Kramolis; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. District Two sets youth development workshop
Dear Members, Please join District Two youth for an exciting afternoon/evening on Saturday, February 15, 2014. The afternoon will begin at 1:30 p.m. for the first-ever District Two Youth Development Workshop, located at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. We will begin with a few ice breakers to get everyone motivated and ready for action. Three interesting topics will be discussed, and you won’t want to miss out! State Youth Director Lynette Talasek will discuss duties of officers and committees and share suggestions on how to make the youth meeting more interesting. Melanie Zavodny, our SPJST Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication, will talk about the importance of Youth Achievement Day (YAD) talent. She will offer some great tips on speaking and finding the right talent act for YAD. Two of last year’s YAD photography judges—Dave Hansen from Temple College and Scott Woodall—will share ideas on picturetaking. Bring any questions you may have in any of these three categories, and I am sure these fine professionals will be happy to help you. Pizza and drinks will be served to those attending the workshop before heading on to the next activity: skating at Wheels Family Skate Center. Skating time is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Many commented on how much they missed the skating party last year. It is back this year, and we hope you will attend. Of course, your friends are invited

Lodge 6 Cottonwood Youth Club reports on activities
The youth held their monthly meeting on Sunday, January 5, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. Five youth and guest Payton Ferguson attended. They removed the Christmas decorations and tree before the meeting. Thank you to all who helped put all the decorations away. The youth visited Quality Care Nursing in Waco, Texas, on December 15. Several of the West residents who were displaced due to the explosion are at this rest home. They enjoyed seeing the youth from our lodge and liked the goody bags the youth delivered. The youth discussed the upcoming lock-in at Lodge 25, Ennis. They are looking forward to this get-together. They will get to see some of their friends that they see at YAD and camp. The January 5, 2014, meeting of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Kaitlyn Whatley. Colten Voigt and Amanda Kaderka led the Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST Youth Club Motto. The register was read. Present were 12 members, two guests, and six adults. The minutes were read and approved. Hailey Girod gave the treasurer’s report. Youth Leader Cristy Girod talked about how successful our needy family meal event was in December and that we will do it again next year. Our youth club earned the Bronze medal for the Presidential Service Award for 2013. We hope to earn the Silver award in 2014. On January 12, we are going to host a bingo hour at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living facility from 2 to 3 p.m. She reminded members about our canned food drive and toy drive we are doing this year. After-meeting activity was going to Dairy Queen for ice cream.

She gave us a short Czech culture lesson on the custom of Valentine’s Day in Czech Republic. It was interesting. Also, Zoe Talasek attended our meeting. We worked on our Vestnik project and talked about the camp tee-shirt design contest. We voted to have a valentine’s party at our next meeting. Our youth leader is going to make a valentine’s box for us. Everyone was encouraged to bring a valentine for every member of our youth club. Ms. Pam and Kaycee discussed the scrapbook, and we worked on it for a while. We also talked about a day trip to Temple to go to the Czech Heritage Museum as a district outing during spring break. Youth Development Workshop There will be a District Four Youth Development workshop held at the lodge hall in Rowena on February 9, starting at 2 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to attend—parents and members.

Dear Věstník, Wow, I can’t believe how fast the year 2013 went by. I have done a lot this past year - going to State YAD,

being Michelle House’s duchess again for the last time since this was her last year. I also had a lot of fun at camp, meeting new friends and going on the blob pond. We also went to the Corpus Christi Getaway and played in the water on the beach with all my friends. Our youth club participated in the Pleasanton Cowboy Homecoming parade which was exciting since I got to ride the SPJST Float with District Seven Queen Michelle House and State King Sammy Hoggard. We donated pajamas and teddy bears for the children at Methodist Children’s Hospital in San Antonio for Make a Difference Day. During December, we came together as a family, wrapped and filled shoeboxes with all kinds of items, necessities and goodies for CASA to give to kids in foster care which we do every year so they will have a present to open at Christmas. Our youth members went on an outing to Green Acres. We played games, mini golf, and just had fun even if it was cold. I can’t wait to see what fun and excitement this next year brings. Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club Hosts Bingo for Residents at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Facility
Dear Readers, On Sunday, January 12, 2014, Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club hosted a bingo hour at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living facility in Taylor. Twenty-four residents played bingo while 10 youth club members helped them out. Seven adults were also in attendance, including District Two Director Jesse and Linda Pospisil. The residents had a great time
and enjoyed spending time with the youth. We were able to play 40 games in one hour, handing out 50 cents per bingo. We look forward to doing this again in the next few months. Fraternally, Cristy Girod, Youth Leader —SPJST—

2013 - 2014 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance
Second Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June to November 2013 youth year. This is total merit points for the 20132014 youth year thusfar. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from June to November 2013 youth year. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.
What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.
Contest Dates June 1, 2013 to May 31, 2014
Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior
Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.
Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10
What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

Texas Czech Legacy Project: Creating a Digital Archive of Texas Czech By Lida Cope
The Texas Czech Legacy Project (TCLP) in the Department of the Slavic and Euroasian Studies (DSES) at the University of Texas at Austin aims to offer comprehensive information about the language and culture of Texas Czechs. Our first and most ambitious undertaking is the Texas Czech Dialect Archive (TCDA), the user interface and database with audio recordings of interviews conducted with ethnic Czechs and Czech Moravians in Texas since the 1970s through the present. We have found our inspiration in the successful Texas German Dialect Project led by Professor Hans Boas of the University of Texas at Austin, which, in turn, motivated John Tomecek, a student of Boas and graduate of UT, to begin documenting the language of Texas Czechs in the early 2000s and call for establishing an archive to preserve this unique immigrant dialect. Our Project’s mission is to create a community resource for Texas Czechs, as well as a scholarly resource for anyone fascinated by your language, culture, and history. As a legacy archive, the TCDA will be a central repository for irreplaceable oral histories, spoken in the Texas Czech dialect, reflecting the change in the historically Czech Moravian communities of Texas from the early 20th century to the present. The Project is dedicated to Professor Svatava Pírková Jakobson who began documenting the rich history of C z e c h Moravian communities in East Central Texas by
collecting folkloric, language and musical materials during her tenure at the University of Texas at Austin (1967 to 1978). Working through her archives at the Briscoe Center for American History (UT Austin) and Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center and Library (La Grange) is an important part of this Project. What do we want to accomplish? Our goal is to (1) create the TC Dialect Archive documenting the unique Texas Czech dialect for current and future generations of Czech Moravians in Texas; (2) document the history and development of the original settlements to the present day through oral histories and various other cultural artifacts gathered from Texas Czechs; (3) aid in any revitalization efforts acknowledging the Texas-grown variety of the Czech language as a resource in language learning by Czech heritage speakers in Texas; (4) inspire more attention to the fast-disappearing dialect of Texas Czechs in research both in the United States and the Czech Republic; and (5) nurture concrete collaborative projects between activists in Texas Czech organizations, local educators enthusiastic about bringing the community legacy into the classroom, and scholars at the University Texas at Austin and in the Czech Republic. Three principle sources of Texas Czech data, spanning the 1970s to the early 2000s, will be gradually processed and added to the TCDA: (1) 2000s: John Tomecek’s 20072009 Archive of 150 hours of digitally
recorded interviews.
(2) 1990s: Lida Cope’s 1997 Archive of 327 audiocassette recordings with sociolinguistic interviews and language tasks, digitized with the generous assistance of The Liberal Arts Instructional Technology and Services (LAITS) team at the University of Texas at Austin.
(3) 1970s-1980s: Svatava Pírková-Jakobson’s Archive of which 97 audiocassette recordings have been digitized by LAITS. The remaining recordings and other arti-
facts are held at the Briscoe Center for American History in Austin and at the TCHCC in La Grange, waiting to be organized, identified, and processed. First steps toward this goal were taken in 1997. Making this vast and diverse collection accessible to the general public is the best way to honor the pioneering work of Professor Jakobson. Our work on this vast collection is in progress. With time, we will add print (e.g. newspapers like Svoboda and Našinec), photographs (e.g. Texas Czech tombstone inscriptions courtesy of Professor Eva Eckert of the Anglo American University in Prague, Czech Republic & Connecticut College), personal photos, autobiographies, and diaries as we are able to borrow and scan them from anyone who’s willing to share them. These materials will be digitized and thus better preserved for future generations. A multi-media resource, the TCLP will be a site to visit for reflection, scholarly research, educational activities for school children and college students, and genealogical work.
Who Are We? The Project is led by Lida Cope, an associate professor at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, and external research associate at UT Austin. Mark Hopkins, a lecturer of Czech at UT Austin, is our chief transcriber and on-site project coordinator. Ryan Miller, a software developer at UT Austin, is our chief web designer. We are thankful to the Department for Slavic and Euroasian Studies at UT, specifically to Professor Mary Neuburger, the Department Chair, for the expressed support for and commitment to this Project, and to Hans Boas, Director of the Texas German Dialect Project and professor at UT for serving as the TCLP’s advisor. Last but not least, John Tomecek, who initiated first efforts to begin this Project in the early 2000s, serves as our Consultant.
So – What Do We Do? Processing of audio recordings is a time-consuming task that requires native-like proficiency in Czech and English and training in transcription and translation using special editing software, ELAN. As unbelievable as it sounds, it takes cc. 60 hours to process one hour of interview. First, each digitized audio recording needs to be edited into smaller segments based on the topics that are being discussed. Second, each edited file is transcribed and translated using the TCLP Transcription and Translation Guide. Transcriptions and translations are checked and checked again for accuracy. Next, the audio data are aligned with the transcription and translation text files. Once all the data are aligned, the material is ready to be put into the database for web-delivery. Each recording is accompanied by speaker metadata including such information as the date and location of the interview. This information must be entered, for each segment no matter how small, into the Texas Czech Collection which is part of DASe (Digital Archive Services) database housed by LAITS at UT Austin. DASe serves as the permanent database of all our recordings that any TCLP user will be able to access by searching the website. We will continue adding more recordings with transcripts to our website as they be-
come available. In the meantime, our web designer is busy constructing the project’s permanent home. Have no fear, however!
