They're Really Cooking!

Like their aprons say, members of Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga were reo-y cooking with their Second Annual Golf Tournament held April 18 at the Turtle Hill Golf course in Muenster, Texas. Organizers consider the event, which attracted 24 four-member teams a "huge success." Founders Provide Inspiration "A successfully communicated thought, from one human mind to another, is one of the most powerful forces I know."

-Peter McWilliams, Life 101 Every human achievement -- from the house that you live in to the Vestnik that you hold in your hands - began as a single thought: We're going to build a house! We're going to publish a newspaper!

Those single thoughts were, of course, followed by countless other thoughts. Some were optimistic: Just what we need: A new house!

Some were perhaps pessimistic: Publish a newspaper? Who's gonna' read it?

Thoughts are powerful stuff!

But you know, thoughts without action have little power at all. Think for a moment about something as simple as folding the corner of this page. You can think about for as long as you like; still, it's not going to happen - not just by thinking or even talking about it. You can even go so far as to form a committee and address the matter for days on end. But even then, it won't happen not until someone simply reaches up and folds over the corner. It takes physical action to get the job done . . .

Last week, my family went to San Antonio for vacation. While we were in town, we made a point to check out the Institute of Texas Cultures. While it isn't as flashy as Fiesta Texas, the Institute offers visitors an engaging and colorful look at some 26 cultures that contribute to the dynamic character of our great state.

In touring the Czech heritage section, I was attracted to a wall display, featuring photos and biographical outlines of many of the pioneer Czech figures in Texas around the turn of the century. One of these individuals was Augustin Haidusek. Brother Haidusek, who was born in 1845, immigrated to Texas with his family in 1856. One of the prime backers of the SPJST, he was the founder of the first Czech-language newspaper in Texas and the president of the First National Bank of LaGrange. He was also the county judge of Fayette County and the first lawyer of Czech origin to be licensed by the bar to practice law in Texas and the first person of Czech descent to be elected to the Texas State Legislature.

According to his biographical outline, Brother Haidusek diligently pursued and championed the idea of Czech assimilation into the Texas culture and insisted that English be taught in Czech schools. His focused determination did much to end the general "distrust" of other groups toward the Czechs, which in turn helped to open opportunities for them in Texas society, politics and business.

Through his words and through his actions, Haidusek breathed life to this notion of building a better life for himself and others here in America. It wasn't enough to dream of what could be.

Brother Haidusek worked to make good things happen for himself as well as others.

When ideas and actions are combined, the results are among the most powerful forces on the earth. It's a combination that can quite literally move mountains or, as in Brother Haidusek's case, build an enduring fraternal society.

Now, if you haven't already done so, please fold the top left corner of this page . . . Your assistance makes it a simple task . . .Without each individual action; however, it would be next to impossible for any one of us - or even a sizable group - to fold all of the current issues in circulation. Imagine!

Going to everyone's house, asking to borrow their Vestnik and then folding over the corner. An exercise in futility!

With your help, it was downright easy! All it took was a few lines of instruction and then each of us reaching up to fold one corner. A simple task; however, it helps to illustrate the our great capacity to bring ideas and dreams to life by rededicating ourselves to our founders time-honored principles of fraternalism, democracy and hard work.

Thus only can you gain the secret isolated joy of the thinker, who knows that, a hundred years after he is dead and forgotten, men who never heard of him will be moving to the measure of his thought - the subtle rapture of a postponed power, which the world knows not because it has no external trappings, but which to his prophetic vision is more real than that which commands an army.

Postscript: If you are passing through San Antonio this summer, you might consider paying a visit to the Institute of Texas Cultures, centrally located in Hemisphere Plaza, near the River Walk and Alamo. The Institute is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., except on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Admission for adults is $4 and $2 for seniors over age 65 and for college students with a valid school ID. Youngsters under the age of two are free.

For his efforts, Justin, who is past SPJST State King, received a $100 check. His winning essay is reprinted below.

An Open Letter to Members Regarding the Year 2000 Convention

What I Believe the Flag Will Mean to Americans in the Year 2025 I believe that in the year 2025, the American Flag will mean the same if not more that it does today. The flag will still represent freedom of speech and all of our basic rights, but it will be represented with a greater passion and belief. Because when we fought for our freedom, that flag meant so much to us, and as time went on, we went through many hardships and we had to look back upon what that flag meant. To me, the flag represents my freedom to choose what I want to do in life and not have someone else choose for me. As time goes on and

leads up to the year 2025, there will be problems and hardships along the way that we must overcome. But to overcome those problems, we must look back at the pain and the struggling that our forefathers went through to make that flag mean what it means today. That is why the flag will still represent our freedom, but with a greater passion because we will be living through our own struggles to make that flag represent freedom to us in our own way.

Dear Members, The next Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) convention is a year off. As a concerned member, I believe that we need to think about a name change for our Society. There are people who hear the name SPJST and think that we are a secret organization or that you have to be a Czech to join.

Our policy of voting on members to be accepted in the lodge is outdated and may even be discriminatory. As it is now, to be a delegate, one has to attend a majority of his or her lodge meetings. There are people who are better qualified and more knowledgeable to be delegates who either don't have the time to attend their lodge meetings or the lodge meetings may fall on a day that they can't be there.

In the minutes of our Supreme Lodge meetings which appear in the

Vestnik, the way officers vote has to be reported. As a result, one has to hear the pros and cons before he can make a decision. Also, the rule that an officer or director has to have a knowledge of the Czech language is outdated. There are qualified people in our lodges who can't speak a word of Czech who would make good officers and directors.

There are lodges that don't have sales representatives and don't care for any. If the Supreme Lodge appoints somebody, they don't cooperate with the new people. I also believe that it is not businesslike to put our financial reports in the Vestnik each month.

Also, in my thinking, we could upgrade the paper on which our Vestnik is printed. We might also want to print fewer issues.

We have a good member society with many benefits. There's no reason why we can't grow.

Lodge 1, Fayetteville and Fayette County CHS members picnic "sight for sore eyes The SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville and Fayette County Czech Heritage Society held their annual combined picnic on Sunday. June 13, 1999 at Polansky's Lake at Rek Hill with 44 members and guests in attendance.

A delicious covered dish meal was enjoyed by all which even included .. polevka" (chicken noodle soup) Prepared by George Hranickey.

Just as everyone finished eating, a torrential downpour drenched everyone even though they were in a covered pavilion because of the flash floods and wind blowing into the area.

This did not dampen the spirits of these happy-go-lucky people as they huddled closer for warmth and laughter. Lee Roy Matocha brought out his accordion and George Koudelka very meticulously wiped off his clarinet and blew a few notes and before you could count to three, everyone was "singing in the rain." Members of the Fayette Singers group included Mickey Hogens, Helen Mikus, Irene Polansky, Edward and Frances Sula, Emily Thoede, Elmont and Georgia Vyvial singing the old favorite Czech songs with others joining in.

Surprisingly, no one complained despite being wet from head (with drooping hairdos) to toes (in soaking wet shoes).

Georgia Hrachovy stated it very appropriately noting that it certainly will remain a memorable occasion— making jest of the whole thing as they moved tables from side to side and then back to the center as the wind shifted with people using the tablecloths as ponchos -- "a real sight for sore eyes."

Lodge 5, Pilot PointTioga golf tourney a "huge success" SPJST Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga held its Second Annual Golf Tournament on Sunday, April 18, 1999 at Turtle Hill Golf Course in Muenster, Texas. The tournament was a huge success with 24 teams of four players each entered. This was more teams than we had expected and our lodge made a profit of $3,300 which will go towards our building fund.

We awarded cash prizes to the top three teams. The winning teams were: First Place Andy Marshall's Team Second Place Coors' Team Third Plaice Donnie Koerner, David Fuller, Kemp McMillan and Jon Mosely i11111,11)1111111•11BINORVIr-7----l

Each team member entered in the tournament received a goody bag and door prizes were awarded at the end of the tournament. Thank you to the Home Office for supplying the aprons for our workers.

Handmade Quilt Winner Also, the drawing for the quilt was held on the day of the golf tournament.

Over 1,000 tickets were sold and the winner of the quilt was Dorothy Tamplen. A special thank you to Laura Doizalek for piecing the quilt together and all the ladies of our lodge that cross stitched the blocks. A profit of $700 was made on the quilt drawing and this will also go towards our building fund.

A great big thank you goes to all the lodge members that came out and helped make this such a success.

Supreme Lodge Sponsors Meal We want to thank the SPJST Supreme Lodge for being the meal sponsor which consisted of sausage from Rudolph's Meat Market, brisket and sauerkraut which was enjoyed by all. Our meeting was rather informal this month; we had a picnic. There were 36 members and 31 guests gathered at L.E. (President) and Joella David's home, Sunday, June 13th, 6 p.m. They have a large area back of their home that was just right. A good time was had by all. Hamburgers and hot dogs were served. Donnie was kept bery busy for a while trying to fill up that crowd.

We were privileged to have Bessie and Emil Petr with us. Bessie is District Three Youth Counselor.

Bessie brought an item to be used as a door prize or auction item. It was decided to be auctioned off. It brought $50. The winning bid went to Dean Carender. She says it was a very good pecan pie. Thanks, Bessie: it was appreciated. The building fund keeps going right along.

We were also privileged to have District Three Director, Johnnie Krizan with us. He brought along several items for door prizes. Thanks, Johnnie; we're always glad to have you.

Wednesday, June 30, 1999—VESTNIKI5 Our monthly drawing this month totaled $202. Half of this - $101 went to the one with the winning ticket, Glenn Pelzel. Then Glenn turned around and made the highest bid on our monthly auction item for $101.

Thanks, Glenn. The building fund just keeps right on growing. The item auctioned off was donated by Alice and Robert David. Thanks, folks.

Other guests of the day (some of L.E. David's business associates) were Bob Leonard, Rick Martin and Gary Moore from Abilene, Texas. Bob was the listener, eater and designated driver.

Rick and Gary were the singers and guitar pickers. I've met a lot of musicians and singers over the years and I think that Rick fits into that category of people who can sing all night long and never sing the same song twice. This reporter even got in on a little bit of pickn' and singin'. Alois Pelzel took my picture and had his finger over the lens. It don't look like me, I don't think? Thanks, guys. We were glad to have you.

All in all, it was a great success.

We'll look forward to the next one.

6, Cottonwood sales rep receives top selling award Lodge

Hi! Brother Al Soukup, President, called our meeting to order on Sunday, June 7, 1999 at 2 p.m. The youth club led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call of officers was held with all being present.

Sister Georgie Soukup, Flag Bearer, reported that we had 29 members present and two guests from our Home Office in Temple. It was very nice to have Brother Gene McBride and his lovely wife, Sister Frances McBride, with us for the afternoon.

Our Secretary, Sister Barbara Hykel, read the minutes from our last meeting.

They were approved as read. She also read some correspondence. Our Treasurer, Sister Peggy Dobecka, gave her report, which was accepted as given.

Financial Secretary, Brother George Straten, gave his report of one new adult member and one transfer from Lodge 87. Both were accepted. We welcome both of these individuals and are looking forward to seeing them join us for our meetings, socials and other functions. The bookings for the month were also given. Brother George reported on our trustees meeting, which mostly was about our upcoming picnic in July. It will be held on July 18th and I will be writing more on that later.

Brother George also reported that all workers would be needed at 6 a.m. on June 27th, the day of District Three Youth Achievement Day (YAD), which our Lodge No. 6 will be hosting.

A meal of fried chicken/sausage and all the trimmings will be served. Ladies of the lodge were asked to please bring the desserts.

Microphones to be Purchased Brother George Straten also brought up about getting two new microphones

for the lodge that Sister Peggy Dobecka, Youth Leader, has asked for.

It was voted on and passed by the members present with one be paid for by the youth club and one be paid for by the lodge. He also reported that our next trustee's meeting would be held on Friday, August 6th at 7:30 p.m.

Sister Hattie Kaska, Sunshine Committee, was called upon for her report. She reported sending get well cards to Steve Neckar and Anthony J. Rejcek. She also reported sending sympathy cards to Michael and Deanna Marek, Adam and Ashton; and to Gary Marek, Christopher and Sherril.

Sister Peggy Dobecka, Youth Leader, gave her report. The youth are working on scrapbook and craft items for the upcoming District Three YAD, held at our lodge on June 27th. She needs help from everyone on getting the meal prepared. She asked for desserts from the ladies. She also reported that the youth would give out their items to all the fathers present at this meeting.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Nelda Hlavaty, thanked all who have helped out during the past year.

She reported that there would be plenty of help needed for June 27th at 6 a.m. for the preparation of the meal for District Three Youth Achievement Day. She reported that fried chicken and sausage with all the trimmings would be served.

Members Greeted

by State Field Manager State Field Manager, Brother Gene McBride, brought greetings from the Home Office. He spoke to us briefly, letting us know that two new insurance plans are in the making and would be explained more as soon as marketed.

He mentioned that sales were great and that District Three came in as the number one District of the state with the biggest production ever. He explained that Brother Jerry Kucera, District Three Sales Representative, contributed lots of time and hard work and our Lodge 6 received the Platinum Award, all of which Brother Jerry had a hand in accomplishing.

Agency Builders Award Presented Therefore, Brother McBride presented Brother Jerry Kucera with a beautiful framed "Agency Builders Award". He went on to to say how proud, it was for him to have been in Jerry Kucera Virginia and accept this award for Brother Jerry and bring it back to him, as it is a great honor to receive an award like this. Brother McBride said "behind a good man is a good woman," as he asked Sister Dorothy Kucera to come and be by Brother Jerry's side as he presented this award.

Congratulations to the Kuceras and thanks to the McBrides for joining us today and allowing us all to be a part of this presentation.

Those in attendance at our meeting with a June birthday are Brother George Sulak and Sister Dorothy Kucera. A happy birthday to you both and to all with a birthday this month.

Lucky Winners Brother Gene and Sister Frances McBride brought a few door prizes from the Home Office. Thanks a bunch! Winners were: Sister Stella Perez—an insulated mug, Brother Robert Dobecka—postal pad, Sister Evelyn Bezdek—calculator and Brother Bill Skerik—a glass mug.

Congratulations!

The $5 door prize from the lodge was won by Sister Stella Perez. A progressive door prize was drawn with the winner being Dalton Reid, but he was not present. Various other door prizes were exchanged, with a special "dad" door prize donated by Brother Ray Perez and won by Brother Ernest Bezdek.

Our meeting was then adjourned for all to enjoy a Father's Day meal of brisket, ham and chicken with all the trimmings. Lots of good desserts were also enjoyed. Thanks to all the ladies for this nice meal.

Our next meeting will be held on Friday, July 2nd at 7 p.m. with a meal at 6:30 p.m.—social and meeting all in one this month.

9, Snook extends invitation to Second Annual Family Fun Day Lodge

Dear SPJST Members, Last year, you received a letter letting you know that we were planning a Fourth of July picnic at our lodge to try to raise funds to renovate the building.

This year, we want to say a huge "Thank You" to everyone who helped in any way to make that picnic such a success. It truly exceeded any of our expectations.

Renovations Continue As we stated in our letter to you last year, some proposed renovations might include: (1) lowering the ceiling, (2) installing central air and (3) putting on exterior vinyl siding or painting. At this time, we are happy to report that the hall has been painted and looks very nice. The money that is remaining will be used to help with another step in the renovation process as funding becomes available.

Brisket, Sausage to be Served To help towards that end, we invite you, your family and friends to come out again this year for the second Annual Family Fun Day on July 4, 1999. We will be serving barbecued brisket, Slovacek sausage and chicken from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The plates will cost $5 for adults and $3 for chil-

dren under 12 years of age. Advance tickets are available from any youth club member or lodge officer. This year, we are taking steps to help the serving lines move more quickly.

Silent Auction Offers Various Items In addition to the barbecue dinner, there will again be a silent auction with all sorts of useful items donated by individuals and businesses in our area. So, please, do come join us for some good fun, food and fellowship. You will also be helping to make future improvements to the hall building possible by your participation and/or donation.

We also invite you to attend our monthly meetings which are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. We really need your help and support if our lodge is to continue.

18, Elgin reports on June meeting Lodge

The regular meeting of Lodge 18, Elgin was held June 15, 1999. Dinner was served at 6:30 p.m. honoring birthday members who were lucky to be born in the June month. Brother Thomas Ries was joined by three sisters, Irene Vrabel, Delores Greinert and Dollie Hajda. Everyone enjoyed barbecue, pickles (Vrabel's style), chips and sweets.

President Andrew Greinert called the meeting at 7:30 with the Pledge of Allegiance and a silent prayer. Roll call was answered by officers and committees. The minutes were approved.

All officers and committees made a complete report on their positions.

July meeting will be July 13 due to the Western Days in Elgin.

There will be a free dance on July 11 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the SPJST Lodge 18 in Elgin to benefit the youth club of the lodge.

Music will be by the talented Music Masters playing polkas, waltzes and country music for your entertainment.

There will be a silent auction.

Members are asked to please bring items for the auction. Any donations will be greatly appreciated.

The kitchen will be open for $1 hamburgers to eat at the hall. After 6 p.m., hamburgers will be $2.

Members of Lodge 25, Ennis met for their regular meeting of June 10th at 8 p.m. Secretary Patricia Fowler called the meeting to order at 8:10 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Johnnie Krajca.

Reported on the sick list were Joe Novak and Linda Zabojnik; hope both are better by now.

Secretary Pat Fowler read the min utes of the May meeting which were approved.

Reports were heard from all officers and committees.

Youth Leader Sandra Slovak announced their next meeting on June 20th at 2 p.m. Youth Achievement Day will be at Lodge 6, Cottonwood on June 27th.

New members of Lodge 25 are Charlie A. Patak and Lawrence Sulak.

Welcome and we hope to see you at some of our meetings.

President Linda Trojacek gave a detailed report on th Polka Festival. A big thanks goes out to all the workers—door, kitchen and refreshments.

Without you, we could not have done it. A special thank you to our friends, Ken and Sharla Roland, for getting the hall ready for the visitors that came from all over the state. They cleaned the carpets Friday and helped in any way they could Saturday and Sunday.

The youth club did a good job in their youth booth selling popcorn, cookbooks and souvenirs that were made by the youth leader Sandra Slovak and her little helpers. This year's Polka Festival was a huge success and plans

The second Sunday of July, the 11th, is the scheduled date for our next monthly meeting of our lodge. It will be held in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street at 2 p.m.

On the agenda will be the usual reports and business needing immediate attention.

A fraternal hour buffet luncheon is scheduled to start after the business meeting and will have a standard fare.

Lodge 38, Kovar reports on property tax legislation at May meeting The monthly meeting was held on Monday, May 17, 1999. President Johnnie Janak called the meeting to order.

President Johnnie Janak led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and afterwards a prayer by Secretary Joe J. Sulak.

The minutes for April were read by Secretary Joe J. Sulak and approved.

The financial report was given by Treasurer Gearldeen Faust and Vice President Edwin Zimmerhazel gave a brief report.

Then we discussed the upcoming repairs on the Kovar Hall. The president read a memorandum on the ad valorem tax update.

47, Seaton reports on June meeting Lodge

President Edwin Pechal called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Woodrow Marek and James Skrabanek brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Reported on the sick list were Mrs. Theresa Chlapek, Pearlie Faichtinger and Dan Balusek. We wish all of them speedy recovery.

All officers were present. Two board members were absent. Minutes from the last meeting and correspondence were read. Treasurer Gladys Marek gave the financial report. All officers gave satisfactory reports as well as the chairpersons.

New members accepted were Stanley W. Durbin, Melissa Ann Bravenec, Michaela C. Jimenez, Jennifer Renee Kohutek, Kimberly Nicole Cooper, Erica Jordan Cooper, Thomas E. Chamberlain and Ruby L. Bolton.

Since the youth club had their meeting on Saturday, there was no report from Youth Leader Donna Baca.

Frank Klinkovsky was the only member present to have a birthday in June. Happy anniversary to Frank and Irma Klinkovsky.

Door prize winners were the men present in observance of Father's Day. We hope all fathers had a great day.

The next monthly meeting will be Monday, July 12 beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a covered dish meal followed with the meeting at 7 p.m.

Audit of all books will be Friday, July 9 at 7 p.m. The regular board meeting will be Monday, July 19, 1999.

Lodge 66, Waco reports on June meeting The meeting was called to order by Vice President mary Alice Langlotz on June 13 at 2:30 p.m. at Linden Hall, Elm Mott, Texas. All officers were present except President George Pauling who was out of town. The youth presented the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance and motto. There were 37 members present and one visitor, Sister Joyce Bantle of LaCrosse, Wisconsin. She is the sister of Sister Darlene Engelke We are very happy to have you with us today.

Secretary Dana McAdams read the minutes of the May 16 meeting and they were approved as read.

Correspondence Sister Dana McAdams read correspondence addressed to President George Pauling from President Howard Leshikar inviting all members to attend the Flag Day Ceremony on June 14 at

preme Lodge Home Office at a.m. Sister Dana also read a letter from Jan Vaculik stating that they would like to have more subscribers to the Hospodar Newspaper. The address is Hospodar, P.O. Box 301, West, Texas, 76691. A flyer is on the bulletin board if anyone is interested.

Vice President Mary Alice Langlotz read the Board of Directors report of June 2.

Chairman of the Entertainment Committee Sister Dorothy Gerlich gave the committee report. They met on June 2 with one member absent.

She reported she was glad that Brother Louie Veselka and Brother Eugene Gerlich were able to be back at the meeting. Both are doing a lot better after their illness. Today, we are having barbecue sandwiches, chips, pickles and ice cream. For the July meeting, members are asked to bring sandwiches. The Entertainment Committee will furnish desserts.

Chairman of the Cheer and Condolence Committee, Sister Emma Ceska read a lengthy but interesting letter from Brother Otto and Sister Louise Matus. We are happy to hear that they are feeling a lot better and we wish them well. Sympathy cards were sent to Brother Eugene Gerlich for the death of his brother, Vernon Gerlich; to Mildred Duke on the death of her husband, Billie Duke; and to Alfonse Kolar on the death of his wife, Leona Kolar. May they rest in peace. A get well card was sent to Larry Yates, son of James and Gladys Yates who had surgery Sister Emma Ceska had our visitor, Sister Joyce Bantle to speak on behalf of her Sister Darlene Engelke.

Sister Darlene had an honor bestowed on her on June 9 at St. Catherine's Nursing Home in Waco. Sister Darlene was inducted into the Daughter's of Charity organization of Paris, France. Sister Darlene has given 50 years of service in many ways. We are very proud of you, Sister Darlene, and congratulations.

Youth Report Youth Leader Sister Diana Engelke gave the youth report. There were 15 youth, eight adults and triplet visitors, Katie, Jena and Tony Weeks, grandchildren of Brother Eugene and Sister Dorothy Gerlich. Sister Diana reported that the youth are getting ready for Youth Achievement Day (YAD) on June 27 at Cottonwood. She reported that Justin Engelke won the Flag Essay contest and will be attending the Flag Day Ceremony in Temple. The youth will be doing a car wash and go bowling at a later date. Today, the youth will present the fathers with gifts and queens and kings will present their speeches. The June birthday cake was brought by R.D. Easter, game by Sandra Trickett. Youth door prize winners were: first place, Jodie McAdams and second place, Kylie Callaway.

Sister Libbie Parma had no Trust Fund report.

Brother Eugene Gerlich gave the Bookkeeper's report. He thanked all members for their prayers and get well cards. Brother Eugene, we are so happy to see you back with us.

Rose Marie Knobles of Port Lvaca was the lucky grand prize winner of a beautiful gas grille given by Lodge 41, Port Lavaca. Her name was chosen from more than 300 entires received.

Lodge President Suzie Wiest presented the prize to Ms. Knobles at her home in Port Lavaca.

8/VESTNIK—Wednesday, June 30, 1 Sales Representative Brother Milan Dujka reported that about 30 policies have been sold for the year.

Candidates for Membership Sister Darlene Engelke read names of candidates for membership. Brother Milan Dujka wrote up Ricky A. Lovecky; Brother Randall Dillard, Sr., wrote up Desiree Wilson, Brian Kay Wilson and Melba Rose Gibson; Sister Darlene Engelke wrote up Eric K. Wallace, Amanda Leigh Wallace and Colton B. Losak. All were accepted as new members of Lodge 66.

Brother Jodie McAdams reported that there have been a lot of car burglaries in the area. He said that thieves were taking parts of cars apart and asked members to be on the look-out for anyone suspicious. He said to keep the doors locked.

Vice President Mary Alice Langlotz thanked Brother Jamie Yates for mowing the grass around Linden Hall.

Justin Engelke was congratulated on winning the Flag Essay and the LIT shirt design. Congratulations to brother Jodie and Sister Dana McAdams on the birth of their grandson Christopher Kyle Johnson on May 25. Congratulations also to Brother John And Sister Diana Engelke on their 25th wedding anniversary.

Vice President Mary Alice Langlotz thanked Brother Eugene and Sister Dorothy Gerlich for donating the quilt.

The winner was Kris Greenwade of Whitney, Texas.

Speeches Presented Candidates for queen gave their speeches which they will present at YAD on June 27 at Cottonwood.

Queen candidates are Sandra Trickett, Candice McAdams and Alicia Neslony. King candidate, Jodie McAdams,also gave his speech. They all performed very good. Good luck to all the candidates at YAD. Adult door prize winner was Dorothy Gerlich; 50-5- winner was Dorothy Veselka who gave her winnings back to the fund.

Members present celebrating June birthdays are Jewell Warhol, Emma Ceska, Darlene Engelke and Jodie McAdams, Sr. The youth presented gifts to the fathers in attendance today. They are Milan Dujka, Ben Pustejovsky, Otis Ceska, Johnnie Gaidusek, Tim Urbanek, Louie Veselka, Euiene Gerlich, Jamie Yates, John Engelke, Bennie Engelke, Paul Neslony, Jodie McAdams and Michael Galler.

Dear Members and Friends, President Harold Rohde called the meeting to order at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 1999.

The membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members.

Secretary-Treasurer Glen Latham stated that Reporter Frank Pajestka, Jr. was absent but all other officers were present. The reading of the minutes were approved as read. All committee reports by Brother Latham showed they are all doing fine.

Brother Rohde reported that the annu-

al fund raiser in May was a success and he extended thanks to all who helped.

Bids Accepted The membership rejected a bid for the painting of the outside of the hall and voted to accept bids for the painting of the inside and outside of the hall along with the repair of the ceiling on the inside. An advertisement will be listed in the paper for the bids with G.L. Brisbin and Glen Latham taking all bids to be submitted to the board of Trustees.

July Super Bingo The lodge will hold two super bingos in July, on Saturday, the 3rd and 17th to help with the expenses of the new painting.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi Expresses Appreciation to Members April 25, 1999

New members accepted into the lodge were Susan Luck, Evelyn Luck, Eyelyn Sanchez, James Rumfield, Suzanna Richter, Brent Duncan, Brenda Duncan, Glenda Pisch and Tony Siprian.

Dean Brisbin was the only member in attendance celebrating a birthday in June.

Door prize winners were Tony Sladecek, Estelle Coker, Joe Sumbera, Harold Rohde and Florine Rohde.

A motion was made by Ann Latham to adjourn, seconded by Estelle Coker.

Secretary Salac read last month's minutes and correspondence—a thank you from the Venzl Zastoupil family, a letter, a letter from the Czech Heritage of Texas and from the Hospodar newspaper.

Sunshine lady Vicky Kohn sent the following cards—get well to Brother Cory Gaiser, Sister Cynthia Hagar and Sister Casey Jarma; sympathy—Sister Alberta Zastoupil and sister Mary Mach on the loss of Brother Zastoupil (Sister Alberta's husband and Sister Mary's brother), Brother Gaylon Guyer on the loss of his wife, Sister Vivian and to the Sister Lydia English family.

Our sincere sympathy is extended to the families. Congratulations to Brother Charles Mikulas on becoming a great-grandfather last week!

House Committee: Brother Adolph Salac bought and had towel dispensers put up. Also he had the ice machine repaired and checked out what items at the lodge needed attention.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Faye Rejcek reported on dues and donations sent in—it was a very good report.

We were happy to see Sister Georgia Hughes at the meeting to report on her progress towards being our new sales representative (rep).

Sales rep Ben Jarma gave his report and also reported the Czech Culture Society meets at Lodge 84 on June 28.

President Yeager reported for Youth Leader Bessie Petr, who was absent.

The youth leaders met at Bessie's house and planned three months of activities. Also, interested teens attended three days of Leader-InTraining near Salado, Texas. The youth enjoyed a Heritage Harbor outing and meeting, performed the Beseda at T.I. and also performed the flag ceremony at the Fraternal Council meeting

Wednesday, June 30, 1999—VESTN1K/9 and picnic. Sister Bessie and leaders also visited with the Pilot Point youth and leaders. Last, but not least, camp starts for the youth on July 23.

Congratulations to Sister Tara Cloutman who is the latest youth leader to join this hard working group of leaders.

Sister Carlyn Ondrusek of the Fraternal Council reported a nice picnic ended the summer meetings until September.

President Yeager announced July 7, the Entertainment Committee meets at 7 p.m.—that's on a Wednesday and on August 10, the Czechfest mailers will be prepared. If you are in town, come help stamp and staple.

Our next dance is on Sunday, July 18 with Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six. Please come and enjoy the evening with friends and relatives. On August 21, Jodie Mikula Band plays for the Princess Ball. Then on September 19, Czechfest is scheduled.

So start planning now.

Dear Members and Friends, "Old Glory" is 222 years old today, June 14 and she is still flying high.

Betsy Ross takes credit for making the first flag, but I heard that she really wasn't the first to make one. Don't know who it was, but Betsy Ross gets my vote.

We had a wonderful Homecoming at Lodge 88 on Sunday, June 6th.

Everyone worked together to make it the success it was. Thanks to all who helped.

We want to welcome some new members into the lodge. They are Dorothy and John Reeves. Also.

Dorothy and Henry Novak, who are transfers. Welcome!

Also, the Men's Club has a new member. He is Johnny Broz. It's about time you joined the Men's Club,

Johnny, and since you don't have enough to do, President A.J. Stayton will put you to work real soon.

Winners of the door prizes of $5 each were Leander Pflughaupt, Donna Merkle, Carol Havemann, Pres Clooney and King Hegwood. The winner of two tickets, with parking privileges to an Astros baseball game was Aggie Foster, Lillie Spies' daughter from California.

Birthdays celebrated were Emily Hegwood, Betty Theiss, Susan Kelly Broz, Mike Trefell, Kinsley Fisher, Lori Pflughaupt, Dorothy Pflughaupt, Marjorie Nowak, Matthew Nowak, Barbara Stevenson, Vince Hegwood, Ray Krampota, Georgia Lincke, Norman Urbanovsky, Cody Cox and Margie Anders.

Anniversaries were celebrated by Kim and Vince Hegwood, King and Helen Hegwood, Agnes and Tom Haney and Edna and Willie Wehring, Dorothy and Henry Novak and Carol and Donnie Havemann. Our refreshments after the meeting were furnished by the Hegwoods, Haneys and Wehrings. Congratulations to all of you.

Those who were reported as sick were Pat Holeman and Leeland Hensley.

We went to a 50th wedding anniversary dinner and dance on Sunday for Agnes and Tom Haney. It was a beautiful celebration with all the trimmings.

They have two daughters, Joyce and Sheila and one son, Dennis and several grandchildren. Her brother and sisters were there, too. Their son, Dennis, gave a really nice speech about his parents. May you have 50 more years, Agnes and Tom. Melanie Spies, our Secretary, and her husband, Don, went to Grand Junction, Colorado to the 1999 Juco World Series Baseball Tournament. Don is a coordinator at San Jacinto Community College and was invited to attend.

These were the top 10 college baseball teams in the nation. they have won their division the last three years. In the tournament, they won the first three games, lost the fourth and came back to win the fifth in this double elimination tournament. The final showdown was between two Texas teams, Grayson Community College from Grayson County and San Jacinto Community College, Houston. They lost, but if they had to lose, it was at least to a Texas team. San Jacinto Community College took second place but maybe they can win first place in 2000. they enjoyed visiting Colorado as it is a beautiful state. They got to see some snow also.

We are sorry to tell yo Frank Tilich's only child, a daughter, passed away on Sunday, June 13th. She was Dorothy Lathrop from Commerce, Texas and was buried on Wednesday, June 16th.

She was married to Ronnie Lathrop.

She was 64. Our prayers are with you, Frank.

Who Is It? Everyone I write about has done so much for the lodge. It's hard to disguise them. This man is special and has done it all. He was born on October 15, 1927. He was married Don May 28, 1949 and has one son. He and his wife celebrated their 50th anniversary this year. He joined SPJST in 1947 and first started working at the lodge helping the youth club. He was on the Entertainment Committee for three

years, Board of Trustees for six years, advisor to the President for one year, Grievance Committee for six years and e Decorating Committee since 1990, is still on this committee and is presently Sergeant-at-Arms. In 1982, he started helping Anna Vala in the kitchen. After she retired, he is still in the kitchen and has been the main person in preparing food for the lodge Sunday functions and the monthly meeting nights. He has extended the ticket booth in the lobby, extended the bar area, built three trophy case in the lobby and when it was needed, painted the recreation room, office, gazebo, rest room areas and the guard shack. During one year, he did so much for the board of trustees and the lodge that the board donated $1000 to the Supreme Lodge Scholarship Fund in his honor. One board member once said, "If you want ??? to do something, it gets done before you ask him." He built and donated a podium for Lodge 196 and when someone has a raffle, he builds his famous squirrel feeders and donates them. He was fraternalist of the year in 1996. He served in the Merchant Marines for four years and the Army for two years. He is a member of the Czech Heritage Society, National Rifle Association, American Legion Post 560, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Gulf Coast Conservation Association and Texas Farm and Ranch Association. He retired as Captain from the City of Houston Fire Department after 39 and one half years. After retiring, he became a friend and handy man for several widow ladies, doing tasks for them that hey couldn't do for themselves. When he is not working at the lodge or out doing something for someone else, he can usually be found working and enjoying his farm. Who is it???

He is Johnny Broz who is married to Clara. They have one son, John, and daughter in-law, Susan. Didn't stump you this time either, did I? He has done so much for the lodge. We appreciate you, Johnny.

Lodge 88, Houston Birthday Club Sisters report on June meeting Our meeting was called to order by President Kathy Trefell. She thanked all those who helped with the cake booth and by coming early to cut the pies and cakes and getting them wrapped. That's work. They don't cut and wrap themselves you know. Those who worked besides Kathy were Flo Orsag, Ellen Miculka, Estelle Kelly, Margie Anders and Lillie Spies.

Secretary Ellen Miculka read the minutes of the May meeting. With one correction by Mary Kosut, they were approved as read.

Treasurer May Quider gave her report.

Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut gave her report. She thanked Bessie Dewer for handling the cards for her last month while she was ill. Bessie sent get well cards to Mary Kosut, Georgie Buchanan and Margaret Spahr.

She sent birthday cards to Lillie Spies, Bessie Lero, Flo Orsag, Josephine Bun and Margie Anders. Mary Kosut sent get well cards to Evelyn Mikolas, Kathy Trefell, Alice Motal and Adella Kite.

Remember, ladies, we are going to Galveston on June 21st. Everything will be paid for by the Birthday Club except for guests except for $5 for the IMAX and $6.58 for lunch at the Golden Corral. We still need some sign-ups for this trip. Your spouses can come, too, as guests.

Our hostesses were Pauline Traylor and Willie Mae Ermis the first week.

The second week hostesses were Willie Mae Ermis and Bess Witovec. We really appreciate that Bess volunteered and of course, Willie May Ermis always works hard in the kitchen.

Remember, we don't have cooks for lunches during the summer. Our hostesses to help in the kitchen for July will be Lowrina Lindemann and Lillie Spies. They will each make two cakes each Wednesday. Also, cakes for the first Wednesday will be baked by Margie Anders and Julie Kinnoman.

The second Wednesday, cakes will be furnished by Alice Bily and Bess Witovec.

One of our sisters, Alice Bily, was honored by Sokol for all the work she has done in the past for them. A representative from the mayor's office was there and gave a nice speech to honor Alice. She got a plaque from them also.

Clara Jecmenek's home was burglarized. That's pretty traumatic for anyone much less someone who is ill.

Keep her in your prayers.

Helen and King went to Biloxi, Mississippi to gamble this past week.

They went with two other couples and had a wonderful time.

Our by-laws need one change. On the second week of our luncheons, the buyer of the food will get $7. The other two hostesses will get $4 each.

We failed to put this in our new bylaws.

We have just one birthday in June and that is Inez Jeanes who is an honorary member.

Calcutta was won by Bess Witovec and Bessie Dewer.

10/ViSTNIK—Wednesday, June 30, 1999 Our chaplain, Helen Hegwood, was out of town; therefore, Mary Kosut led us in prayer, after which we had a great lunch of barbecue, potato salad, sand wiches and salads cake and coffee or tea.

The Army started to build an airfield south of the lake and when the airfield was completed, lots of soldiers were stationed there and so many of them came to the dances. At that time, many name bands played like the Six Fat Dutc/mien, Bob Wills, Milton Brown and others played at the hall. Lots of money was made so that is the reason the loan was paid off so soon.

SPJST Lodge 91, Crosby, held its second quarterly meeting on June 15, 1999 at 2 p.m. at the home of President Chester and Marie Stasney. Those in attendance were Chester and Marie Stasney, Evelyn Woptika, June Smesny, Alvin and Stazie Franta and Malba Smesny.

The minutes and treasurer's reports were approved as presented.

A discussion was held regarding advertising SPJST in a local church bulletin. This item was tabled until more information is obtained from the church.

Tentative plans for the annual Christmas party were discussed. A date and place will be decided at the September meeting.

The next quarterly meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 6th at 2 p.m. at the home of Malba Smesny.

The meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m.

92, Fort Worth tarok tournament set for August 14 Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, With this cool weather, I have to ask, "Is it June or December?" We love it anyway and it helps keep the electric bill low.

The lodge meeting on June 13 was interesting, but more members should attend. The lodge belongs to all members, so you should help keep it as it was kept for us in the past. As it was said in the meeting, our lodge is a beautiful building and it has been kept in the best of care. The building was started in 1937 and was completed in 1938. The building is brick, the floor is maple and it is really nice to dance on. We have remodeled it on the inside only; the outside is about the same. Members in 1935 wanted to build a new building, so several old timers got together to have plans as to what we wanted as a new lodge hall. However, in 1938, the present building was out of the city limits in open pasture. There were no buses or street cars that came close to the place where we would construct the building.

Many wondered why build so far out, but today it is in the city limits of Lake Worth and Sampson Park. Houses and buildings are all around us now and there are paved roads. Lodge 92 gives credit to all that helped build the building. At that time, money was borrowed from members and the Supreme Lodge.

This loan was paid off real quick as World War II was about to start.

There are photos in the bar area about the grand opening of the building.

Some of you young members need to look for yourselves as maybe your parents held you in their arms. Most of the old timers have passed away and the children are the ones that are keeping the lodge active. So when you are at the dances or anything, be sure to look at the pictures and find your mothers and fathers who helped to build the building for us younger generation. There are a few of us old members, but age has taken many fine members away.

Thanks to Frank Prochaska for getting the meal ready. There were cold cuts and salads. Also the ladies always bring pastries. Liz Howard, Monalee Hattendorf helped in the kitchen.

Rudolph Koci did a fine job washing pots, knives and forks. Thanks to all that did help in some way.

The sales representatives are doing great. Martha Durham did win a trip, but she said no money was given her to gamble with so Martha, use your own and win plenty. Our lodge thanks our sales representatives for doing a good job selling and getting new members.

Janie and Rafe Loftin celebrated their 25th wedding at the country and western dance on June 6, 1999. Food was brought and cake was served for all that were at the dance. Congratulations to you and may you have many more.

June 27, Saint Paul Catholic Church will have a Polka Mass at noon. Followed by roast pork, klobasa dinner with the trimmings. The dance will be 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with music by the Praha Brothers Band from Temple. Dinner and dance combined will be $12 per person or dinner and dance tickets can be purchased separately—dinner, $6 per adult and children under 12, $3; dance tickets are $6 per person. Christine Zich will have a birthday on June 23. On June 27, Carl and Christine will be married 59 years, the same day as the Polka Mass at National Hall.

92, Fort Worth Lodge 107, Floresville Ladies Circle charter announces meeting bus trip to Temple date changes and Waco July 13 Our July meeting will be changed Lodge

The Ladies' Circle of SPJST Lodge 92 of Fort Worth meeting was called to order at 10:35 a.m. on June 8, 1999 with 42 members and three men and four guests present.

After pledging allegiance to the flag, Secretary Betty Lindsay read the minutes for May and were approved as read; sorry, I failed to recognize Lousie Oujesky as a hostess.

Evelyn Spacek gave her Sunshine report and Betty Lindsay read a thank you card from Inez Krivanek and Betty thanked the ladies for the card and $3 sent to her sister, Ruby Gilmore.

Thanks to the June hostesses for a great job, however, there was a shortage of meat platters. The ladies who served were not aware that the hostesses of the month were responsible for supplying the meat dishes. Our July hostesses will be reassigned, since there will be no meeting at the lodge hall next month.

Bus Trip On July 13, 1999, the Ladies' Circle will charter a bus to Temple and Waco.

177, Academy members enjoy quarterly social at Maggie's Restaurant Lodge

Our June meeting was held at Maggie's Restaurant in Little River in conjunction with our quarterly social.

Many members came to enjoy the social and attend the meeting.

President Bill Hutka called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. All lodge officers were present.

Libbie Bartek, Chair for the Sunshine Committee, reported that she sent a sympathy card to the family of Reverend Harry Bilski. We were happy to have Irene Johnson at the meeting and thoroughly enjoyed her company.

All committee reports were turned in to the secretary to be incorporated in the minutes of the meeting. Minutes were approved as presented.

We welcomed two new members into the lodge—Nathan Williams and Kristopher Zajicek. Nathan is the grandson of Maryann Summers and Kristopher is the great-grandson of Louis Driska.

President Hutka then introduced Melanie Zavodny, State Youth Director, who addressed members about her involvement in SPJST and upcoming activities of the youth department.

Everyday Hero Awards were presented to members. These awards are based on regular attendance at lodge meetings and participation in lodge events.

After our business was completed members enjoyed delicious food.

The fellowship we shared at Maggie's that night was outstanding. It was really nice .to enjoy each other's company and visit together. In this fast-paced world, we many times don't take the time to listen, really listen, to each other and share their concerns.

Warrenton reports on June meeting The June meeting of Lodge 179, Warrenton was held on June 10 at the Warrenton Store.

All officers were present to give their reports.

Justin Baack was a visitor at our meeting.

Doris Eckermann was the birthday honoree. She and Eugene have their wedding anniversary in June also.

Amanda Quade and Arnold and Lydia Peters were missed at the meeting due to illness. They are some of our regulars.

Bo and Bea Vasek and Lloyd and Joan Goehring volunteered to be on the food committee for the next three months. They will serve cold cuts and are asking the other members to bring something that goes with that.

The next meeting will be on July 8, 1999 at 7 p.m.

reports on June meeting President John Hilscher opened the meeting on June 2 with Joe Babino leading us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. We observed a moment of silence for our departed members and loved ones, especially, Albert J. Sulak who died at the age of 95. We express our deepest sympathy to his family.

Secretary Rhonda Hurtik read the minutes of the May 6th meeting whicg were approved as read.

We want to thank State Representative District Three for donating to the lodge a refrigerator after ours went out. It is greatly appreciated.

The rental wedding went very well.

We enjoyed the difference between it and the Czech weddings that we are accustomed to. This disk jockey gave non-stop music to their interesting dance.

A thank you note was received from Louis Grochoske for a donation sent to Harvest House in memory of Mydell Grochoske as requested by Gordon Cox. Mydell has done so much for this lodge.

Congratulations to our young Vice President Johnna Hilscher upon graduating from Burleson High School and also to Felicia Hurtik who graduated from Bell High School in Hurst. Much luck to these and all graduates.

members gather for flag ceremony Our May meeting was called to order by President Luksa. The minutes were read and approved.

In April, 50-year membership pins were distributed. There were two transfers into our lodge, along with two new members. At our June meeting, one member asked for a transfer to Lodge 17.

On June 14th, some members gathered at the hall for a flag raising followed by coffee and kolaches. A committee was appointed to audit books.

A report was given by the committee concerning the new tile for our floor in the lodge hall.

Youth Achievement Day will be held at Lodge 186 on July 11th. Being no other business, the meeting adjourned.

The next meeting will be July 13, 1999 at 6:30 p.m.

Dallas Circle of Czech Women report on June meeting Our meeting was called to order by President Bertha Podhrasky. Faye Wright led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and we reminded standing for a moment of silence in memory of Vernon Gerlich, Mary Petr, sister inlaw of Bessie Petr, Wanda Petr and Annie.Petr.

Bertha welcomed 17 members and seven guests.

The minutes of the May meeting were read by Faye Wright. Faye thanked Evelyn Trojacek for taking the minutes.

Bertha Malik, Membership Chairwoman reported that we have 79 members.

Correspondence was read by Evelyn Trojacek included a thank you card from Lydia Alholm for the monetary gift in memory of her son, Tony. She asked that the gift be left in the krouzek treasury. Evelyn wrote a thank you card to Libbie Smith for the monetary gift that she left in the krouzek treasury in memory of her husband, Francis.

Her letter was returned and Janet, her daughter, sent the correct address. The new address of Libbie Smith is Duval Oaks Guest Home, #33 B, 5310 Duval Road, Austin, Texas, 78727.

Sunshine Chairperson n Georgia Brozek sent sympathy cards to Francis Gerlich, Bessie Petr, Wanda Petr and Annie Petr.

Eileen Jakubowski introduced our speaker, Gretchen Feinhals of Senior Citizens of Greater Dallas. She told us of the different programs of the family friends project. She encouraged anyone who has some spare time to volunteer for just one hour a week. She said that you would be surprised what a difference it would make. In honor of Father's Day, we let the men go first in line. We enjoyed a delicious covered dish dinner.

Worth Friendship Club reports on June meeting Fort

The meeting of the Friendship Club was held on Wednesday, June 2, 1999 with 33 members present. Also present were Kathy Ormsbee, guest of Ima Lou LaPlant, Anna Lesikar, guest of Agnes Reznicek and Emily, granddaughter of Jeanie Mason. Everyone was made most welcome. The meeting was called to order by Jo Prochaska, President, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Secretary Merle Kovar read the minutes from the previous meeting, and Lydia Alholm gave the treasurer's report. Both were accepted as presented.

President Jo reported she delivered the check on behalf of our Club to St. Thomas Church for the use of their Parish Hall for our meeting. Joe Kozel was thanked for providing the beautiful music before the meeting.

Rosemary Gribble sent her regards and said she was sorry she was unable to attend the meeting. Mary Pavey from Alabama also sent greetings and says she still thinks of us on the first Wednesday of each month. Guest Annie Lesikar joined the club and read an essay, "What Not to Name Your Dog" which was very humorous and enjoyed by all. Alice Barnes reported 384 food items were brought last month for St. Thomas Food Pantry and everyone was thanked for their generosity.

Announcements There was no report of Czech Culture Society. The Fraternal Council meets June 14, 1999 at 7 p.m. for their annual picnic at Czech Club.

Unfinished Business Our fund raiser is coming up June 6, 1999 at Sokol. We are to furnish and serve the pastry for the dinner for the Melodion Band from the Czech Republic on their final performance.

Hostesses for June were Evelyn Cechan, Florence Peressenyi and Sydney Bridewell.

Hostesses for August are Lillie Hamusek, Carlyn Ondrusek and Evelyn Salac.

Congratulations to the June graduates namely, Betsy Wolfe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Wolfe and granddaughter of Carlyn Ondrusek; Kelly Sims, daughter of Gene and Vicki Sims and granddaughter of Wanda Petr; Jenny Cechan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donnie Cechan and granddaughter of Henry and Evelyn Cechan.

July Luncheon The July luncheon outing was discussed and Alice Barnes reported reservations have been made at Ryan's Steak House on Cherry Lane for 11 a.m. It was voted that the club would pay the full cost of each eligible member's lunch.

We only had one birthday celebrant for June, Tommy Dillard and she was not present. So, Happy Birthday, Tommy! We missed you.

Sunshine Chairperson Linda Horner reported that miss-you cards were sent to Janie Cepica and Martha Clifton.

Get well cards were sent to Jo Prochaska, Georgie Davidson, Mary Pavey, Katherine Garrison and Jeanie Mason.

Annie Whitsell invited everyone to St. Paul's Polka Mass to be held on June 27 at SPJST Lodge 92. She said the Mass will begin at 12 noon with a dinner/dance following. She also invited all to Reverend James A. Boyle's 50th anniversary of ordination to the Priesthood to be held at St. Paul's Church on June 13.

Member News Lydia and Roy Alholm thank everyone for their love and expressions of sympathy, phone calls, cards of condolences memorials and mass cards received on the death of their son, Tony.

While Alice Barnes was cleaning up the church recently following a storm in which a skylight was broken she arrived home to find a tree had fallen on her house blocking the door with electrical wires everywhere.

Lucky for her, her grandson is a fireman who came to her rescue and as Alice said, "He knows how to get into houses." While Alice was looking after the church, the good Lord was looking out for Alice as she didn't have any structural damages to her house.

Donna Kozel, daughter of Joe and Mary Ann Kozel was married to Charles Camp, son of John and Rita Camp of Pasadena, on May 22 at St. Cyril Catholic Church in Houston.

The reception was in the Grand Ballroom at Rice University. Donna is a graduate of Texas A&M and is now President of Phillips 66 Credit Union: Charles has a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas and works for Texas Memory Systems. The couple honeymooned in Maui and are now at home in Houston. Mary Ann stated that this was the most beautiful wedding ever and reported having a wonderful time.

Martha Boenisch had two grandchildren to graduate this spring: Christopher Heinrich graduated from James Bowie in Austin while Candace Boenisch graduated from Aledo High School. Martha also attended the wedding of her Godchild, Donna Kozel in Houston.

Pat McWilliams also had two grandchildren to graduate. The oldest grandson graduated from Texas Wesleyan University while his younger brother graduated from Nolan High School. The older graduate majored in computer science and will enter Texas A&M in the fall to being work on his masters. The Nolan graduate received a scholarship to Texas Wesleyan and will begin his studies in the fall. The boys' mother and father are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary so all four are going on a cruise to celebrate.

Rose Romeo reported that her granddaughter Rachel Kuntrovitz graduated with high honors from a high school in Louisiana.

Lydia and Roy Alholm had two grandsons to graduate. Middle grandson Danie graduated from SMU while youngest grandson, Timothy, graduated from high school in Glen Ellyn. Tim plans to follow in the footsteps of his, two older brothers by attending SMU. Jeanie Mason reported that her granddaughter, Emily, graduated from kindergarten.

Since I am writing about graduates, I must mention my own. My two

great nephews, Kyle Morales and Eric Morales (cousins) who are grandsons of my sister, Georgie and Pete Morales, graduated from Ennis High School. I have attended high school graduations of all my eight nephews and so far of five greatnephews. I only have eight more high school graduations to go and yes, the next one will be a girl to graduate.

Agnes Reznicek reported her grandson, Ted Owen, married recently and will be living in Georgia. Her oldest granddaughter, Kim Owen, left on a cruise with a friend.

Congratulations go out to all the graduates and best wishes on their future endeavors. Also congratulations and best wishes to all the newlyweds.

Frank Ed Prochaska, son of Frank and Janet Prochaska and grandson of Frank and Jo Prochaska, has been in the Calvary at Texas A&M for four years. Since the limit is only four years, he is now considered "dead man", and I am sure all you, Aggies, understand this expression. Currently, Frank Ed is off backing-packing in Europe.

Prayers go to to Anna Johnson's last living brother who is in the hospital in Louisiana. May he have a complete recovery.

Jeanie Mason, Katherine Garrison, Rosie Steinman, Sharron Connelly and I recently participated in the Sokol District Slet in Houston. We had a great time and I especially enjoyed seeing and visiting with Norma and Bill Peterzelka.. I haven't seen them in lots of years and thanks, Bill and Norma for reading my articles in the Vestnik.

Our June hostesses were Annie Whitsell and Martha Boenisch. Our thanks go out to you for filling in so graciously. Following grace, a bountiful luncheon was served and games were played.

Remember, our next meeting/luncheon will be at Ryan's Steak House on Cherry Lane on July 7 at 11 a.m.

Reunions Mikeska Family President Clyde Steelman of Bluff Dale wold like to invite all descendants of Tom Mikeska to its annual Mikeska reunion on Saturday, July 10 at the Kasper Pavilion in Shiner. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m.

The optional cemetery gathering and orientation will be at the Shiner Brethren Church Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. Hand-outs with maps and history will be given to family members.

Hrabal Family The 27th annual Hrabal reunion will again be held at the SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood Hall on Saturday, July 10, 1999 located three miles east of West on FM 2114. The hall opens at 10:30 a.m.

Socializing is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Snacks and drinks are furnished and served all day. There will be games for the youngsters and a domino tournament for the oder ones.

A business meeting and election of officers is at 3 p.m. followed by a raffle and auction. Those who wish to donate a prize to the auction or raffle will be appreciated. This will help raise funds to the reunion.

Please, designate the contribution for either the raffle or auction. Also, there will be door prizes.

n Memoriam In Memory of Johnny Hluchan We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 87, on behalf of the officers and entire membership wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of JOHNNY HLUCHAN, 93, of Temple, who died Sunday, April 4, 1999 in a Temple nursing home.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Temple Brethren Church with Dr. Mark Labaj officiating.

Burial was in Bellwood Memorial Park.

Mr. Hluchan was born in Crosby to Joseph and Lena Brandt Hluchan. He lived in Temple for many years. He worked for F.J. Zabcik grocery in Zabcikville. He and his wife operated the Hamburger Stand and Cafe in Temple. He was employed by J.C. Penney's for several years and Daniel's Men's Wear until his retirement. He was a member of Temple Brethren Church, Sunday school and SPJST Lodge 87, Temple. He served as elder and president of the Brotherhood at the church and was a volunteer worker at Seaton Senior Citizen Center.

He married Irene Martinec on November 22, 1930.

Survivors are his wife, Irene Hluchan of Temple; a son, Norman Hluchan and wife, Gladyne of Longview; a grandson, Steve and wife, Jammie; and two great-grandsons, Jeremy and Christopher.

Visitation was at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home of Temple.

Memorials may be made to Temple Brethren Church.

Resolution of Sympathy The officers and members of Lodge volan Cechie, No. 135, Ennis, wish to express their deepest sympathy in the death of our lodge brother, EMIL MOUCKA. Brother Moucka passed away at the Baylor Medical Center in Ennis on April 25, 1999. He was born in Ellis County, the son of Charles and Mary Galetka Moucka. He attended school in Telico.

After his marriage to Phlowrene Brumley of Ensign, they lived in Ensign. He served in the European Theater during World War II. After his discharge, he became a farmer. He retired in 1996.

Brother Moucka is survived by his wife, Phlowrene of Ennis and his son and wife, Norman and Cecilia Moucka of Hernando, Mississippi; a sister, Mary Ann Good of Dallas; and other family members. He was preceded in death by two infant children, Gary Lyn and Nona Belinda.

Graveside services were held at Myrtle Cemetery with the Reverend Randall McCollum officiating under the direction of the Keever Mortuary.

Services were held at ScanioHarper Funeral Home in Temple with the Reverend David Fischer and Dr. Rodney Bolejack officiating.

Mr. McDonald was born in Oenaville to Walter B. and Leona Gibley McDonald. He attended Temple Junior College and Pasadena University in Pasadena, California.

He was an agent for American National Insurance and worked for the Texas Employment Commission for 24 years. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was an Air Corps veteran. He was a member of First Christian Church of Temple, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, SPJST Lodge 87, CenTex Sportsman Club and the Texas Statement Employees Retirees.

Survivors are his wife, Wilma Jane McDonald of Temple; a son, William Byron McDonald of Austin.

Memorials may be made to Vista Care Family Hospice in Temple or to any charity.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 84, Dallas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of ROBERT LEE BARTON, who passed away February 14, 1999 at the age of 77. He was born in Abbott, Texas to the late Rudolph and Tracy Lishka Barton. He married Peggy Ann Morgan in 1951 in West, Texas and she preceded him in death on December 26, 1991. He was a member of he West Brethren Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts in West and Frisco and SPJST Lodge 84 in Dallas. He was retired from Frozen Food Express and a volunteer fireman.

Survivors are two sons, Kenneth Robert Barton of- Edna, Texas and Randy Bob Barton of Frisco, Texas; brother, Harry Barton of Austin, Texas; and grandchildren, Dustin Barton, Nathan Barton, Sydnie Barton, Dennis Barton and Neil Barton.

Services were held at Central Christian Church conducted by Reverend Charles Van Bebber.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 84, in Dallas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother, VENZL ZASTOUPIL, JR., who passed away on June 3, 1999 at the age of 86. He was a member of Oak Lawn Methodist Church, Love Field Mason Lodge No.1274 for 54 years, and an SPJST Lodge member since 1935. He worked for Braniff Airlines for over 25 years. He was known as a gifted craftsman, folk artist, woodworker and as the "toothpick king" in Dallas.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Alberta Zastoupil of Dallas,; two daughters, Linda Corley of Broken Bow, Oklahoma and Carolan Thomas of Dallas; one sister, Mary Mach; one brother, Frank Zastoupil; four grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 5, 1999 in the Restland Memorial chapel. Interment followed in Restland Memorial Park.

Resolution f Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member,

LT. COL. CHARLES OTTIS CLADWELL (USAF, RET.), who passed away on Wednesday, May 5, 1999 in Sugarland, Texas at the age of 80. He was born on May 16, 1918 in Knoxville, Tennessee, the oldest child of Mark and Lucille Caldwell. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Lawrence, and his sister, Wanda. Chuck graduated from Knox High School in 1936 and entered the Army Air Force in 1940. He was cornmissioned as a Second lieutenant in 1943 when he graduated from Yuma Army Air Field pilot training school.

He then served as a flight instructor at Marfa Army Air Field in Marfa, Texas.

After the end of World War II, he served in the Air Transport Command and was stationed in Paris, France and Casablanca, North Africa. In 1948, he participated in the Berlin Air Lift.

During the remainder of his 27 year career, he flew as a command pilot and enjoyed assignments in Athens, Greece and Hampton, Virginia. After his second retirement in 1980, he enjoyed his children, grandchildren and supported his wife, Lois, in her career as a minister of the Unity Church of Christianity.

ANTHONY "TONY" GENARO, who passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 1999 at the age of 84. Tony retired from Texas Bus Lines with over 40 years of service. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, the Elks Lodge, SPJST, American Legion Post 560 and a member of P.O.P.S. Survivors include a niece, Patricia Anderson; and a nephew, Russell Genaro.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 24, 1999 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Pat H. Foley Funeral Home with Father William Kallayadan officiating. Interment followed at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson Foundation of Harris County.

Jenry E. Ripple, Sr. Henry E. Ripple, Sr., 80, of Taylor, died Wednesday, May 26,1999 at John's Community Hospital.

He was born August 21, 1918 in Rowena, Texas, the son of Jerry F. Ripple and Francis Polak Ripple on October 15, 1940. He was married to Ann Lydia Dusek.

Mr. Ripple was a resident of the Taylor area for the past 59 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He retired on March 31, 1990 from IBM, where he was a quality inspector/supervisor for 11 years. He was a member of the American Legion and the Taylor Brethren Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jerry, Ed and Emmitt; and one sister, Mary Dusek.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Lydia (Dusek) Ripple of Taylor; daughter, Sharon Ann Barker of Taylor; son, Henry E. Ripple, Jr. and wife, Marie Ann of Taylor; four grand children, Sherill (Ripple) Engelhardt and husband, Rex, Trey Ripple and wife, Heather, Sharla (Barker) Gola and husband, Gary and Barry Barker; four great-grandchildren, Brittni Gola, Coty Gola, Tanner Engelhardt, and Trent Shumate; one sister, Georgia Warren of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and two brothers, Adolph J. Ripple and Ervin Ripple, both of San Angelo, Texas.

A prayer service was held on Friday, May 28,1999 at 7 p.m. at the Taylor Brethren Church.

Funeral Services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 29, 1999 at the Taylor Brethren Church with the Reverend James Hejl and the Reverend Dan Marek officiating. Burial will follow in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Trey Ripple, Barry Barker, Rex Engelhardt, Raymond Mazac, Gary Gola and Ted Hejl.

Arrangements were by Condra Funeral Home in Taylor.

Burial was in Midlothian Cemetery.

Sister Adamek died Friday, May 7 in Waxahachie.

She was born in Buckholts and was a homemaker. On November 6, 1938, she married John Ed Adamek in Cameron, Texas. He preceded her in death. She was a member of Buckholts SPJST Lodge 15.

Survivors are three sons, Frank Adamek of Waxahachie and Johnny Wayne Adamek of Weatherford and

jimmy Adamek of Oklahoma; a daughter, Shirley Ann Nowlin of Hillsboro: four sisters, Frances Oliver of San Diego California, Genevie Posival of Dallas, Dorothy Roschetzky of Temple and Adeline Mueck of Cameron; two brothers, Frank Posival of Port Lavaca and Edwin Posival of Rusk; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Elane Gamble Elane Gamble, 61, of Taylor, died Saturday, June 12, 1999 at the Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville.

She was born November 23, 1937 in Taylor, Texas, the daughter of Robert Richard Pfeil and Leona Howe Pfeil on July 3, 1955, she was married to Dean Cullen Gamble.

Mrs. Gamble was a housewife and a lifetime resident of the Taylor area.

She was a member of the SPJST Lodge in Taylor and the Memorial Baptist Church, Taylor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Gamble on September 6, 1995.

Survivors include daughter, Robin Ford and husband, Kevin of Taylor; son, Rodney Wayne Gamble and wife.

Willie was a World War II veteran, 50-year member of SPJST Lodge 142 and retired from Jiral's Drywall Company. He was preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Frances Esterak Brezina and three sisters and three brothers.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary Cilny Brezina; children, Faye Hopkins and husband, Reverend Grady, Bob Brezina and wife, Shirley; grandchildren, Brenda and John Puntch, Jamie Hopkins, Stephen Brezina and fiancee, Jenni Smith, and Kimberly Brezina; greatgrandson, Treyton Puntch (to be born in July); and great-granddaughter, Brianna Puntch (to be born in July).

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 14, 1999, Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Grady Hopkins officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Garden of Memories.

District One Youth Achievement Day set for July 11 at Lodge 186, Caldwell Dear Readers, District One Youth Achievement Day will be held on Sunday, July 11, 1999 at Lodge 186 in Caldwell.

Registration of all craft, talent and royalty will begin at 11 a.m. and last until 12 noon. A fried chicken lunch will be served beginning at 11 a.m.

The program will begin at 12:45 p.m. with the call to order and introductions. Competition is set to begin at 1 p.m.

We have nine royalty contestants and 12 group talents registered along with many individual talent numbers.

It appears that we are in for a full afternoon of entertainment. Come out and support the youth of District One at the 1999 YAD. See you there.

Members of the Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club welcomed guest speaker Wayne Genzer and his seeing-eye dog, Kojak, to a recent meeting. Youth club members heard from Mr. Genzer about what it's like to be blind and how the blind are able to make adjustments and function effecively in the sighted world.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club members and '99 graduates Elizabeth Wagner and John Richardson were recently honored with a graduation social.

Best wishes to these two young people who have been an asset as well as an inspiration to other youth club members.

elects 1999-2000 Youth Club officers Hallettsville Lode 4 Youth Club held their monthly meeting on Sunday, May 9, 1999 at the Hallettsville Youth Center beginning at 2 p.m.

This was the last meeting of the 1998-1999 youth year. Our new officers who were installed recently by Matt Vanek, District Six Director will take office on June 1, 1999. The officers are:

The June meeting was held on Sunday, June 13 at the Hallettsville Youth Center beginning at 2 p.m. The meeting was called to order by our new President, Nicholas Vahalik. The minutes, roll call and treasurer's report read along with our saying of the SPJST motto.

We had one flag essay contest entry —Nicholas Vahalik.

We joined with the adult lodge in welcoming Gene McBride, Melanie Zavodny and Barbara Rosenkranz from Temple to the adult meeting. They presented very interesting and informative information about the SPJST and the benefits of joining our wonderful fraternal order. We also joined in playing games with the adults.

We voted on a donation of $50 to be given to the Peaceable Kingdom Retreat in Salado, Texas. This is the place where LIT camp was held this year and enjoyed by many along with our two members, Nicholas Vahalik and Adam Siptak who attended and report they had a wonderful time.

Our State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny also joined us in our youth club meeting. Thank you, Melanie.

Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, July 11. Please make plans to attend as we will be finalizing our Youth Achievement Day, etc.

We discussed the free water booth and float at the Snook Fest. We also had Ms. Melynda Giesenschlag talk to us about the various activities at the Snook Fest.

For our craft, we made Father's Day cards. After that, we went over old and new business.

July Charities Our charities for the month of July are: bring one cake per family for July 4th Fun Day, sell 10 tickets per family, work at summer reading program, set up and clean up for Fun Day, make cards for people in the community and clean and water rosebushes. Then Melynda Giesenschlag came to speak to us about the Snook Fest.

After the meeting, we had sodas.

They were very refreshing. We also picked up trash in the park.

youth members plan pool party We helped prepare for the picnic that was on Sunday and discussed other events occurring soon. We were reminded to turn in our Youth Achievement Day (YAD) cards and went over the new rule book. The youth club had two booths at the picnic—the Coke Toss and the Fish Pond.

We took turns working in the booth.

At our meeting, we also discussed going to BLORA. BLORA was very wet! It rained on us and we all gathered under the pavilion hoping it would soon quit. Our next social will be a pool party from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7 at the Elks Pool in Temple. Hamburgers will be served.

Bring a dollar and a towel.

members present Father's Day gifts On June 13, 1999, President Candice McAdams called the meeting to order. Tanner Guidroz lead the pledge and motto. We had 15 youth, seven adults and three visitors, Gena, Katie and Tommy Weeks.

We discussed doing a car wash in July or August. Diana will check on going bowling and see what dates are available to play. We discussed Youth Achievement Day which will be at Lodge 6, Cottonwood on June 27.

Jodie McAdams won first and Kiylee Callaway won second on the door prize.

The youth also handed out Father's Day gifts. R.D. Easter brought the June birthday cake and the game was brought by Sandra Trickett.

Youth Club holds garage sale Dear Readers, The Lodge 88 Youth Club had a garage sale on April 24th in the lodge parking lot. We had all kinds of good stuff for. sale. The money from the sale goes for our Schlitterbahn trip in July.

There were 10 youth members helping at the garage sale. Mrs. Linney treated everyone to lunch from Dairy Queen.

Thanks again, Mrs. Linney. We also made lemonade to sell at the garage sale. We plan to donate left-over items from the garages sale to charity.

The Czech Republic's ties to Central Europe PART I By: W. J. "Bill" Malina Most Americans of Czech ancestry simply cannot understand, or even comprehend, the useless destruction and killing being perpetrated in Serbia, particularly in Kosovo. There was a time when the people of most other nations would have ignored such events. Perhaps, this would also be true today if it Were not for the strategic location of Serbia and Kosovo.

Although the Czech past is not as bloody as that of the Serbs, the recent events in Serbia are the kind of potential atrocity and insecurity that the early Czech immigrants wanted to get away from when they came to the United States. But, be that as it may, Czechs do have an ethnic and historical connection with the Slavic Serbs of today.

It must be understood that Slavic people are a linguistic group rather than a biological or nationalistic race.

Today's Serbs are a Slavic people who throughout the centuries have assimilated many of the barbaric people who unsuccessfulLy attempted to conquer the Balkan Peninsula - Huns, Ostrogoths, Magyars, Avars, etc. The major connection between the Serbs and the Czechs is found in the similarity of their languages, and not in any kind, of biological or nationalistic commonality. The Serbs speak the SerboCroatian language, which belongs to western group of the southern BaltoSlavic family of languages. SerboCroatian developed out of Old Church Slavonic, which was also a forerunner of Czech and Slovak. Old Church Slavonic was, at one time, used extensively in church liturgy. Although there may be small or subtle differences between the language spoken by the Serbs and that spoken by the Croats, it is still one and the' same language.

Serbian is written by using the Cyrillic alphabet, while Croatian is written by using a modified Latin alphabet.

Serbia lies near the center of the Balkan Peninsula - the "Land of the Southern Sla y s." The Danube River and the Danube valley are the most important geographic links between the Czechs and the Serbs. The Danube rises in the Black Forest region of Germany and flows eastward, through Serbia near Belgrade, to the Black Sea on the eastern coast of Romania. The Danube River also serves a part of the boundary between Slovakia and Hungary. The Danube Valley was an important migration route used by early Slavic people as they made their way into central Europe. The Danube

valley also was an important route for the Crusaders who went to Constantinople before going to the Holy Land.

Author and fellow of Queen's College, Cambridge, England, R. G. D. Laffan refers to the Serbs as being the guardians of the gate, that is, guardians of the gateway between the West and the East. That appellation is particularly apropos to the ancient and medieval Serbs who controlled the trade routes along the Danube valley in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula (To be continued.)

Mod-Term. A modern 10-year term product issued to ages 20-60, renewable to age 70 and convertible prior to age 65 with indeterminate premiums. Can be continued as an Annual Renewable Term certificate from age 70 to 95.

Lone Pay Life. A whole life product available with just one premium. The certificate is then paid-up. Issued to ages 0 through 70.
