Midtown Tunnel, Sunday, 7:00 p.m.

i’m suffocated by millions of gallons of water pressing in so much that i can hear the tough metal groaning in union with coarse concrete grinding like my teeth as i shut my eyes and wait for the other side to materialize through the dirty windshield in the driver’s seat a strange man burns my eyes with his glancing backwards through the rearview mirror don’t fucking pretend you care how I’m doing. with every bump i wonder if the painting i drunkenly created will crack under the pressure of the trunk under the pressure of the tunnel under the pressure of millions of gallons of water the radio goes to static and the silence between myself and the driver stretches out and just like the tunnel i can see no opening to conversation i close my eyes and press my too-warm ear against the too-cold window and like pressing my ear to a shell i trick myself into hearing the rushing of the river above and around and i wonder what it would be like for the concrete to crack like fingertips reaching out to touch one another and for water to drip slowly at first and then all at once and fill the tunnel like a fish tank full of brightly colored cars and if my suitcase would break open and my clothes would drift up like floating lanterns i wonder how long i could hold my breath and wonder whether i would close my eyes or not and if i would resist the embrace of the dirty river water or if i would let it fill me and if i could drink it down fast enough as the music breaks through the static and the soft creamy voice of the radio host reaches my ears through the impregnable air and the dim lights of a lesser city reach my wide and petrified pupils the driver asks how i’m doing and i answer okay.

For my grandma.

As I sat On a bed of pine needles With the moon illuminating The spaces between the trees That surrounded me On my knees As if in prayer My hands clutching my head As if I could hold it Together Shaking and wondering if I was strong enough To handle this pain I had brought upon myself I remember For the first time Lying on your couch In the basement I grew up in With a cold towel That you had pressed Over my forehead While you sat next to me Holding my small hand in Your calloused and Rough one From years spent Washing dishes and Cleaning up other people’s messes And how I cried Because of the pain Which in turn Only made it worse

And you told me that You would take it For me If you could It seemed So much simpler To communicate then Despite the fact that Our access To one another’s minds Was limited by our Understanding of the other’s Without the ability to express It But somehow I always knew What you meant And just how much You meant it And now that I am grown I wish that I could tell you Just how much it meant to me When you said you would Take my pain for me If you could And that I could Say it back To you And that you would know What I meant And just how much I meant it.

SHE

always asks Me to stay tries to weave Her fingers through Mine as I reach into the closet for a shirt to wear for somebody else She grabs My cheek in desperation attempting to draw My gaze back to Her’s as She breathes deeply indicating that I should do the same But I cannot look into Her eyes I fear the infinity that sits just behind their deep brown irises more than anything.

She lights the candles on My bedside table wraps Her arms around the back of My neck and tries to dance soberly with me My hair stands on end and I begin gently extracting Myself from Her embrace

but Her hold is tight so I must pry each finger off and turn My back to Her as I quickly trace thin black wings on My eyelids.

Her distractions have made me late. stepping into My shoes and sliding My arms into My jacket sleeves I turn to the mirror to say goodbye and see that She is crying carefully avoiding smudging Her eyeliner.

She never thinks I’ll return.

When you decide That you are going to have one Make that dirty little Under the table agreement with yourself And walk outside The pack in your jacket pocket and The lighter in your hand You are star crossed lovers Going to steal A forbidden kiss in The garden It’s just the two of us.

You think As you hold it between Your lips Your hand creating a home For the flame As the wind desperately tries To put it out Breathe me instead It whispers But you pretend not to hear Because You are going to follow this thing You started Through to Completion.

Once I finish this I’ll feel better.

And As you take the first drag Even the second Or the third You decide Yes. This is what I needed.

I’ll be alright As long as I have this.

But The thing about cigarettes is As you give them life They die just as quickly And you helplessly watch As you destroy the thing You thought could save you Until it no longer exists Murdered at the hands of Its own lover And it may as well Have never been But then you remember You have nineteen more Just like it And as long as you have Fourteen dollars in the bank At any given time A lifelong supply.
