EDITOR’S LETTER

We are happy to welcome you back for our ninth edition!

Just as the ocean ebbs and flows with its undulating tide, life on this tiny island has been fluctuating, full of changes and yet still very much the same.

Through a compilation of texts and photographic galleries we will tour the place many of us call home in our own different ways. In this issue we explore the island from several different angles. We contemplate structure in its suspended form and discover tiny universes within grains of sand. We pay homage to the women before us, rediscover native names from bygone times and visit inspiring new destinations.

We have been adjusting and evolving, and we hope that newcomers and returning visitors will enjoy St. Barth just as much as we do.

When Christopher Columbus first 'discovered' the Caribbean in 1492 he was not the first to set foot in the area. While there’s very little recorded information before this time, it is estimated that the first tribes to inhabit the islands came from South America circa 1600 BC. These original Amerindians were the Arawaks and the Kalinagos (also known as Caribes).

We’ve walked on it. We’ve laid on it. We’ve spent countless afternoons lounging on its warm landscape without giving it a second thought.

But the sand that makes up the beautiful beaches of St. Barth has its own story to tell.

Beaches are dynamic – sand accumulates slowly over time, traveling down the coast via longshore drifts, displaced by storms and put back during calm periods. And although it may all appear to be the same, sand can vary greatly. It is typically made of weathered inland rocks, sea cliff materials, shells, and marine organisms that have been ground down through constant friction. An analysis of sand makes us privy to a whole other world – it’s possible to not only decipher makeup and origin, but also learn about nearby marine life and the overall health of an ecosystem.

Even on a small island like St. Barth, sand particles can look very different from one beach to the next. This collection of macrophotography offers an up close and personal look at the sandy details of some of the island’s most famous beaches.

A première vue, tous les sables se ressemblent cependant si vous y faites attention il varie considérablement d'un endroit à un autre. Il est principalement issu de l'usure des roches et galets, de coquillages et d'organismes marins qui ont subi une érosion et une friction constante.

L'analyse des sables de Saint-Barth nous ouvre la perspective d'un autre monde, et nous donne la possibilité de retracer, non seulement son origine mais aussi de dresser un bilan de santé des écosystèmes marins environnants.

Même sur notre petite île, nous pouvons observer une large variété de compositions et cette collection de macrophotographies nous offre un regard intime sur les détails sableux de nos plus belles plages.

It’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment a finished product is, well… finished.

And maybe that’s precisely the point. If we look at the order of the world, there is a continuous pattern of shifting, changing, growing. And starting all over again. This organic process is truly where the magic happens. The making of something from seemingly nothing; the coming together of materials, people, and energy that makes it all possible. Renowned architect, François Pécard, is a master at appreciating the process of creation as much as the ‘monumental sculpture’ that comes to fruition.

He spends much time admiring the raw beauty in the act of a build, not just the final product. Much like the making of this small island in the middle of the ocean, that came into being by the sheer force of volcanic activity. So too does architecture pave the way for the alchemy of destruction that leads to a new birth of form, something that he has always been fascinated with. The inbetween is often overlooked: the breaking down, the re-forming, the cold hard edges of the unknown. We are often in such a rush to make it to the finish line, to the perfected vision brought to life. There are a myriad of stories about that, but this is not one of them.

Pecard’s reflections on the act of building bring us back, just for a moment, from the greatness of a flawless completed project, to the rough textures and unfinished elements that facilitate the birthing process. A new building does not spring out of thin air, but must go through a becoming, fostered by a team of careful artisans that shape and carry the vision forward into form. The true transformation happens in the moments where the rough materials begin to take on a new life, finding a congruent rhythm amongst themselves (and in harmony with nature) as they build off each other to become one entity.

His belief, and architectural style, has always been one of honoring and enhancing the environment by creating structures that seamlessly blend in with their surroundings, and appear to almost fade into the background. He is focused on the ‘art’ of creating and integrating with nature, taking a very poetic stance when it comes to the entire process. There is an unmistakable reverence when he speaks about the full spectrum of stages, like a dance, that he employs from conception to completion, in keeping with the natural environment and appreciating the delicate symbiotic relationship that exists.

During his many years in business, Pécard has gained an eye for the unique beauty of an unfinished building. He compares it to admiring the sketches of a famous artist before any paint has even hit the canvas – the anticipation and knowing that something great is on the horizon and that these seemingly insignificant parts will come together to create it. How could there not be beauty in that? And those that choose to appreciate this very necessary stage are privy to a world where the ‘not quite yet’ is a time to respect and reflect, and to prepare for a true rising from the ashes. A masterpiece in itself.

Et peut-être que c’est précisément l’essentiel. Si nous observons attentivement le monde qui nous entoure, tout est changement, transformation permanente, croissance, puis, d’un coup, tout s’arrête et recommence. Ce processus organique est l’essence même de la vie. La création de chaque objet, en partant de rien, nécessite la réunion de matériaux, d’hommes et de l’énergie de création.

L’architecte de renom François Pécard apprécie autant ce processus de création que la ‘sculpture monumentale’ qui en découle. Il passe en effet beaucoup de temps à admirer, dans l’acte de batir, la beauté brute des choses, parfois plus que le produit final. Telle la naissance de cette petite île au milieu de l’océan par la seule force de l’activité volcanique, il est fasciné par la création architecturale, une sorte d’alchimie de la destruction qui conduira à une nouvelle naissance de la forme. La rupture, la reformation, l’inconnu, L’entre-deux est souvent négligé : car nous sommes pressés d’arriver à la vision parfaite qui prend vie.

Les réflexions de François Pecard nous ramènent, non pas à la beauté d’un projet achevé sans défaut, mais aux textures brutes et aux éléments inachevés qui permettent cet accomplissement. Un nouvel édifice ne surgit pas de nulle part par magie : il doit passer par un devenir, développé par une équipe d’artisans attentifs qui façonnent et concrétisent une vision. La véritable transformation se produit à ce moment où les matériaux bruts commencent à prendre une nouvelle vie, trouvant leur rythme, entre eux et la nature, pour s’assembler ensemble et devenir une nouvelle entité.

Les convictions et le style architectural de François Pécard ont toujours été d’honorer des structures qui se fondent parfaitement dans leur environnement, qui semblent presque y disparaître en arrière-plan. Il se concentre sur «l’art» de créer et de s’intégrer à la nature, adoptant une position très poétique. Son respect est palpable lorsqu’il parle et dirige, telle un maître de Ballet, toutes les étapes du processus créant cette harmonie en appréciant cette délicate relation symbiotique avec la nature.

Au cours des années, son œil s’est affiné pour apprécier la beauté unique d’un bâtiment inachevé. Il aime comparer cet exercice à observer les croquis d’un artiste célèbre avant même que la peinture n’ait touché la toile - l’anticipation et le fait de savoir que quelque chose de grand se profile à l’horizon, que ces éléments, apparemment insignifiants, se réuniront pour le créer. Comment n’y aurait-il pas de beauté là-dedans ? Ceux qui arrivent à apprécier cette étape nécessaire sont au fait d’un monde où le ‘pas encore tout à fait’ est un moment de réflexion et de respect pour se préparer à une véritable renaissance. Un chefd’œuvre en soi.

Born and raised in the Caribbean, Sebastien Martinon garners much of his inspiration from his home, the small island of St Barth, French West Indies. Having always been fascinated by videography and new ways of communication, Sebastien studied graphic design and web programming, earning his Masters in IT in 2000. In 2001 he founded his graphic design and web business, Ouanalao Studio.

After two decades of delivering creative solutions for local and international clients, Sébastien is now focused on his true passion: fine art photography. The island of St Barthelemy has become both his playground and his muse—and the place where he is able to fully evolve his talent. As a multi-faceted creative who is always in constant search of new techniques, Sebastien founded Spirit of St Barth in 2013, a successful magazine that integrates his photographic vision and highlights stories and articles dedicated to his home. Sebastien’s photography includes landscapes, nightscapes, seascapes, nude photography and experimental pieces. His work is known for its ability to evoke feeling, skillfully blur the lines between traditional and modern, and push artistic boundaries in fresh, unique ways.

Sébastien Martinon est né dans les Caraïbes et a grandi à SaintBarthélemy, d’où il tire une grande partie de son inspiration. Passionné depuis toujours par les nouvelles technologies, Sébastien a étudié le design graphique et la programmation au Canada, puis, fraîchement diplômé en 2000, il revient sur son île bien-aimée et crée son agence de communication, Ouanalao Studio, en 2001.

Après deux décennies passées à apporter des solutions créatives à des clients locaux et internationaux, Sébastien se concentre désormais sur sa véritable passion : la photographie d’art. L’île de St Barthélemy devenant à la fois son terrain de jeu et sa muse, le lieu où il peut développer pleinement son talent. Créatif aux multiples facettes et toujours à la recherche de nouveaux challenges, Sébastien a créé Spirit of St Barth en 2013, un magazine à succès intégrant sa vision photographique et mettant en lumière des histoires et des articles dédiés à St-Barthélemy. Ses styles photographiques varient entre paysages, scènes nocturnes, photographie sous-marine, nus artistiques et travaux expérimentaux . Son travail est connu pour sa capacité à provoquer une dimension affective, à brouiller habilement les frontières entre traditionnel et moderne ainsi qu’ à repousser les limites artistiques de manière originale et unique.

When you ask any number of people what sets St. Barth apart, you’ll often get the response that it has a special charm about it. There are undoubtedly many beautiful destinations in the world, but some just make you feel instantly at home – a quality that this little island has in spades. On our travels this summer we discovered another locale reminiscent of that special seaside quaintness, the historic town of Newport, Rhode Island. The obvious connections are evident: a small waterfront location, businesses like Tradewinds, and Terra boutique having a presence in both, and a lively boating culture. But their nuances are what unite them.

Newport was founded in 1639 (only a few years apart from St. Barth’s colonization) and during the Antebellum period began transforming into a summer resort popular amongst influential writers, artists, and intellectuals. When the naval fleet departed in 1973, Newport had to reinvent itself – building on the historic preservation movement and a revitalized downtown. The town’s mansions were made open to the public and tourism became a major economic driver. Today, millions of visitors are drawn to its scenic beauty, iconic architecture, and vibrant scene. Much like St. Barth, Newport has established itself as a go-to destination, at once laidback and sophisticated.

We visited many memorable places during our stay, but one that stood out is Bannister’s Wharf – a combination of retail, dining, marina, and hotel where you can really feel the spirit of Newport. This wharf, built by John Bannister, was the social and commercial lifeline of colonial Newport.

Today, it has become a popular destination for anyone visiting the area with unique boutiques, quaint guestrooms. and the highly regarded culinary destination, Clarke Cooke House. The wharf connects Newport Harbor to the city, and along the way many restored colonial homes and grand mansions attract the eye.

While different in many ways, St. Barth and Newport both have a similar feeling, a certain joie de vivre – one French and one of the New England variety, but both have married historic with modern class impeccably. And both are worthy destinations for your next escape.

Si vous demandez autour de vous ce qui rend Saint-Barth unique, on vous donnera souvent la même réponse: son charme spécial. Le monde nous offre de nombreux endroits sublimes mais il y en a certains qui nous permettent de nous sentir instantanément chez nous, une qualité que cette petite île a à revendre.

Au cours de nos voyages, nous avons découvert un autre endroit qui nous rappelle ce charme insulaire spécial: la petite ville de Newport (sur Aquidneck island - U.S.A). Les liens sont évidents : une île de caractère, une histoire riche et une culture nautique importante. De plus, les entreprises telles que Tradewind Aviation ou les boutiques Terra et Mandarine, pour ne citer qu’eux, sont représentées sur les deux îles. Mais, au-delà des similitudes, ce sont avant tout leurs nuances qui les unissent.

La ville de Newport fut fondée en 1639 (à peu près au même moment que l’installation des premiers colons à Saint-Barth). Elle a commencé à se transformer, pendant la période d’avant guerre, en une station balnéaire populaire parmi les écrivains, artistes et intellectuels du moment. Lorsque la flotte navale Américaine, qui en avait fait son centre opérationnel, se retire en 1973, Newport doit alors se réinventer. En s’appuyant sur la préservation historique de son centre-ville revitalisé et l’ouverture au public des ‘Mansions’*, le tourisme est alors devenu un moteur économique majeur. Aujourd’hui, des millions de visiteurs sont attirés par sa beauté pittoresque, son architecture emblématique et sa scène culturelle vibrante.

Tout comme Saint-Barth, Newport s’est imposé comme une destination incontournable, à la fois décontractée et sophistiquée auprès des touristes les plus exigeants.

Nous avons visité de nombreux endroits mémorables au cours de notre séjour, mais celui qui nous a marqué le plus est certainement le Bannister’s Wharf. Cette combinaison de boutiques, restaurants, de la marina et de son hôtel de chambres d’hôtes vous fera plonger immédiatement dans l’esprit enchanteur de Newport. Ce quai, construit par John Bannister, au XVIIe siècle, fut la bouée de sauvetage sociale et commerciale du Newport colonial.

Aujourd’hui, c’est un lieu de passage obligatoire pour tous ceux qui visitent la région, particulièrement le restaurant Clarke Cooke House, destination culinaire très appréciée. Les quais qui relient le port de Newport à la ville, puis le chemin côtier où demeurent de nombreuses maisons coloniales et les grands manoirs vous offriront ensuite une magnifique promenade.

Différents à bien des égards, Saint-Barth et Newport offrent tous les deux un sentiment similaire de bien-être, une certaine joie de vivre - l’une à la française et l’autre avec sa touche de Nouvelle-Angleterre. Les deux ont su intégrer avec classe leur passé traditionnel et historique avec un tourisme moderne et sont, sans aucun doute, deux destinations à inscrire dans votre liste de vos prochaines escapades. *Grandes maisons de propriétaires en bord de mer, certaines du datant du XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles
