Built Environment Report Tremco Incorporated, to which Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance belongs, is more than just another manufacturer claiming to be green just to entice designers to specify our products and systems. We are a High Performance Building Solutions Provider, leading by example.

The recent renovation of our Beachwood, Ohio, headquarters is a striking example of our commitment to sustainable construction. We took an old (circa 1970), energy-inefficient building and transformed it into a masterpiece. While our LEED certification is pending, the change was so dramatic that we anticipate not a LEED Gold for renovation rating, but rather one for New Buildings.

O & S Associates, a consulting engineering and architectural firm in Columbus, OH was selected to lead a team of consultants to modernize the building. Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance often engages the AE community and draws upon their expertise for complex projects that require design and engineering disciplines.

ASHRAE 90.1 – 2007: By now, most of you are aware of the changes in the code regarding air barriers. If you haven’t heard or read about it, ASHRAE has mandated continuous air barrier systems for new commercial construction under the 2007 version of ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. There are no exemptions.

The addendum sets stringent performance characteristics for the continuous air barrier system that include:

Continuity throughout the envelope (at the lowest floor, exterior walls, and ceiling or roof ), with all joints and seams sealed and with sealed connections between all transitions in planes and changes in materials and at all penetrations.

»

Joining and sealing the air barrier component of each assembly in a flexible manner to the air barrier component of adjacent assemblies to allow for the relative movement of these assemblies and components.

»

The capability to withstand positive and negative combined design wind, fan and stack pressures without damage or displacement, and to transfer the load to the structure while not displacing adjacent materials under full load.

Green Material and assembly requirements in the new standard include the use of:

Individual materials that have an air permeance not exceeding 0.004 dfm/ft2 under a pressure differential of 0.3” w.g. (1.57 psf ) (0.2 L/s.m2 @75 Pa) when tested in accordance with ASTM E2178; or

»

Test of completed building demonstrating that the air leakage rate of the building envelope does not exceed 0.40 cfm/ft2 at a pressure differential of 0.3” w.g. (1.57 psf ) (2.0 L/s.m2 @75 Pa) in accordance with ASTM 779 or an equivalent approved method.

This School enrolls nearly 700 students. The emphasis is on sustainable design and an interdisciplinary approach to learning, as well as a focus on practice.

All of the programs within the School of Built Environment are presented by faculty with considerable industry and professional experience. Exciting new developments include a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Sustainability and several cross-disciplinary initiatives in Building Information Modeling (BIM). Ferris is currently exploring offering a BIM certificate to professionals already out in the work world. For more about the School, visit www.ferris.edu/SBE. The Michigan Energy Conference is an annual gathering of educators, industry and practitioners, hosted by Ferris State University.
