With 52 A/V rooms of varying sizes spread over a large site, Georgetown University in Doha was designed in a way which would enable multiple rooms across the site to be connected via video conferencing.

The scope of the project took in the 350-seat auditorium, 120-seat lecture hall, a number of 50- and 30-seat classrooms, as well as various

Christie Excels at World Children’s Games

When Ankara hosted the 1st World Children’s Games over ten days in Ankara recently, Christie projection was out in force for the spectacular opening ceremony at the Ankara Sports Hall.

Phantom Event Engineering, one of Turkey’s biggest equipment and rental providers, purchased 16 Christie Roadster HD18K 3-chip DLP projectors from distributors Astel Elektronik, with this event in mind — fielding 12 of the devices, double stacked in six clusters.

This was their first experience of the Christie brand. “As soon as we sign for a project we prefer to purchase all the equipment necessary rather than sub-rent,” confirmed managing director, Aykut Gönülta. “In this way we enlarge our equipment pool.”

The event itself brought together 3,000 junior

sports people from 90 countries, supported by the Municipality of Ankara, and Phantom provided an end-to-end technical solution after taking the venue’s CAD drawing and making the design calculations in WYSIWYG pre-visualisation/rendering software.

Fitted with 1.4-1.8:1 HD zoom lenses, the Christie HD18K projectors themselves were mounted on two truss lines — at 20m horizontal and 20m vertical distance from the projection area and angled at 45° (vertical) — which provided challenges with the focusing.

These were fed by six Hippotizer HD media servers. Each media server has two outputs so Phantom used three to create the six projection feeds, keeping the remaining three Hippotizers as back-up units. Using Hippotizer’s Uberpan component they created a 50m x 30m white PVC canvas for the six outputs, using the blend, warp

and alignment functions in the server. The content was produced specially for this event by Spinifex Group Australia in 5000 x 3000 pixel resolution and Hippotizer’s Virtual Media Manager component split this content to the outputs, carrying the signal with Extron DVI Fiber Optic Extenders.

Phantom meanwhile set-up a Christie network by using a 1Gb switch at the control point and a 10/100 ethernet switch for each cluster. They also made all the connections for the network with fibre optic cables and EtherWan FO to Ethernet Media converters.

In fact all the projector adjustment took place over Christie.net. “Using a switch for each cluster really helped us enormously, as there was a heavy network,” he continued.

Having been fed the story line, Spinifex created ten tracks, each of five minutes duration, for the opening ceremony. All the

content are prepared as JPEG sequences and imported to media servers by Virtual Media Manager Component which encoded these sequences to MPEG-2 files. “The cultural content was a very important element for the ceremony and we thought it would be the best option to full fill the big dancefloor with projection and program the video together with lights,” said Mr. Gonultas.

And since the show was based on a theatrical dance show Phantom drew heavily on intelligent light from Clay Paky as well as conventionals from ETC, Desisti and Philips Selecon. There was also a symphonic orchestra, sound reinforced by d&b audiotechnik J Series for the main PA and Q Series for the delay towers.

There was also a second media display in the form of a circular transparent LED screen on a 10m diameter circle truss, set at 3 metres height. This screen was fed by another media server on the same network as those feeding the projectors.

Phantom’s Technical Manager Sedat Gündüz designed and made all the calculations for the projection, while projection alignment and video programming was handled by

Shay Bonder and Itay Gal from Imagine LDIsrael.

Reflecting on a highly successful production, Aykut Gönülta stated, “We were delighted with the performance of the projectors; everybody was impressed by the colours, intensity, resolution and brightness of the HD18K’s.”

Hemmed in by the roof and back walls, the HD18K’s performed flawlessly despite this confinement, he said. “Because of this we had been concerned about cooling issues.

However, we need not have worried as all 12 projectors worked constantly during the five days, including set-up, rehearsals, and show day.”

Much credit is also due to Astel Elektronik, Christie’s partner in Turkey, who with Christie’s support helped scope out the projection for the stadium, ensuring that the screen areas were covered with high performance video imagery.

Astel have also focused strongly on the Christie brand to secure strong market share with an established client base not only in the world of event staging but also Digital Cinema and high end fixed installations, with recent successes using Christie 3D projectors within a museum project. Crestron DigitalMedia Bridges the Gap Between Paris and Abu Dhabi for De Sorbonne

De Sorbonne University campus in Abu Dhabi

De Sorbonne University in Paris is a global player on the international academic stage and since 2006 has incorporated an oversees campus in Abu Dhabi. With a Crestron DigitalMedia backbone supporting its cutting-edge AV infrastructure, the new campus expertly manages a global communications network and the best in local, campus wide infrastructure too. The networked pairing of campuses provides video links and communications for a fully interactive and internationally connected teaching environment for both face-to-face and distance learning.

De Sorbonne, Paris, is over 700 years old and the institution is renowned for its highly refined education, with particular expertise in the humanities and social sciences. The Abu Dhabi campus is located in Al Reem

Island, just outside of the city centre and although the two cities are over 3000 miles apart, Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (PSUAD) enjoys the same, world-renowned, academic staff as the Parisian campus.

De Sorbonne was adamant that the new campus in Abu Dhabi be an extension of what had been achieved in Paris and not a stand-alone institution. This is why the teaching staff, - whether through visits to Abu Dhabi or via video links - is the same and to match its formidable reputation, the very latest teaching aids, resources, audio-visual technology and IT networks were required.

Genesis Integration, based in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, was tasked with meeting these high standards and knew that only Crestron would meet the brief.

Due to the distance between the two sites it was factored that video links would be an essential part of their integration. With this in mind the project demanded the highest quality video and audio delivery system and one that would stand the test of time.

Genesis recognised the requirement to install the latest in future-proof, HD multimedia interface on a traditional converged network.

Crestron’s DigitalMedia cable solution was selected as its speed and capacity are unrivalled. The DM cabling is able to deliver both analogue and digital signals to the highest quality without any compression and scaling. This solution from Crestron provided the high-definition quality that was required and also provided a future-proof solution for the project.

On campus students from over 60 nationalities are in attendance, studying subjects as diverse as medieval Islam to international geopolitics to inter-cultural processes. A major challenge with the site and the installation was language. Genesis worked closely with Danish Interpretation Systems to build a solution based on high quality, wireless networks to offer an infrared interpretation system.

Each space across the campus has varying amounts of AV and each has its specific and tailored set-ups to meet the demands of their functions. In the initial set-up of the brief it was decided that each classroom had to have a video output and display that could be operated regardless of the tutor’s distance from it. Combined with interactive boards and screens the tutors are able to move freely and adjust the display settings without have to return to a central location. This all improves the flow and interactive nature of the teaching time at PSUAD and reduces any disruptions from the AV set-up.

The larger classrooms on the campus require audio reinforcement and added video conferencing capabilities. These spaces use the Crestron backbone to achieve this and the ample rooms are used when Paris based lecturers address large groups of students in real-time lectures.

Included in the teaching programmes are intensive French courses for those not au fait with the language when starting their degree pathway. Language classrooms have been allowed for and in these spaces students wear wireless headsets to tap into the translation and interpretation service.

The music rooms on-site required huge amount of inputs for various musical instrument amplification, microphones and the extremely high-tech Yamaha mixing desk for recording. Interactive displays and computer support has also been incorporated into the music rooms and all the equipment, from various origins, is unified on the Crestron network.

The main ‘Robert de Sorbon’ lecture theatre required crystal clear audio and (like the larger teaching spaces) the very best video conferencing facilities. Across the space a good number of display screens have been cleverly arranged to provide audience with a real connection with the lecturers across the 154 seat capacity theatre. The interactive pen display has proven to be a valuable tool

for the staff using the space for presentations as live annotations on display materials can be performed which all contributes to the interactive nature of the stunning AV facilities.

In addition to the Robert de Sorbon theatre the main auditorium is equipped with a similar set-up but on a grander scale to accommodate the 700 seats. This vast space is used frequently for concerts, conferences and other major events.

At the heart of this installation is an ethos that promotes learning and the pursuit of knowledge. The strong reputation De Sorbonne has with academic excellence is carried on with the development of teaching techniques and effective, interactive presentations and study programmes.

The relatively new site of PSAUD has been meticulously kitted out to match De Sorbonne’s heritage and to attract the most promising minds in the region to this stateof-the –art campus in the heart of the UAE.

Mapping on the MOOV: projectiondesign® F82 Projector Drives VW Roadshow

Content producer creates stunning multimedia experience for new Passat launch throughout Poland.

Underlining the ruggedness and consistency of its products as well as their high performance, Norway’s projectiondesign is proud to have supplied F82 1080p 3-chip DLP® projectors to multimedia production company MOOV for the Polish launch of the new VW Passat.

Working in conjunction with advertising agency JUST and event producer Mediaconcept for end customer Kulczyk Tradex (the official VW distributor for Poland), MOOV was tasked with creating a multimedia production that would showcase the new Passat’s capabilities in a way that would capture the imagination of the audience. The show made its debut at the

Polish National Motor Show in Poznan before being taken on a tour of upmarket shopping centres and other venues in major cities around the country.

Piotr Majewski, the head of MOOV comments: “The whole presentation had to be easily movable and easy to duplicate at each venue. A ‘black box’ made up of trussing and black drapes was designed, into which we decided to use the largest projected surface area possible, so that the audience would really feel that the show was surrounding them.”

Piotr Majewski continues, “The presentation was to take place in a temporary ‘black box’ structure erected at each venue. To really immerse the audience in our animation, we wanted to use not just the rear wall as a projection surface, but also the floor, sides

and, of course, the car itself. We used 3D projection mapping to create the movie using the exact proportions of the new Passat, with the precise positioning of the car in relation to the walls and floor of the presentation space.”

“As well as high resolution, the F82 also came into its own because it is available with short focal-length or ‘wide-angle’ lenses, which were essential to produce such a wide image from a relatively short projection distance.

Additionally, the F82’s DynamicBlack function, which dynamically narrows the aperture of each projector lens, gave us the very high contrast we were looking for during the ‘night’ scenes in our animation.

And finally, we used projectiondesign’s RealColor™ technology to precisely calibrate the four projectors with one another and adjust the brightness to take into account the different materials of the projection surfaces in the space.”

This pre-show visualization and programming was done using Dataton’s WATCHOUT, which also took care of the seamless edgeblending and image-warping of the four projectiondesign projectors used to show the movie at each location.

Nanyang Business School encourages the use of advanced technology to enhance the teaching and training experience.

The Nanyang Business School’s training centre which comprises of four training rooms required recording and streaming facilities in all the rooms which can be used simultaneously. The Lecturer can use a computer to monitor these 4 training rooms whereas the students can use the Internet to receive live broadcasting or request for Video-On-Demand (VOD) to bring up missed lessons.

To meet the School’s objectives, REACH used their distributed system solution. This system is hardware and software embedded, so it is easy to maintain and is user friendly. By using this system, the school can expand the system for up to 8 training rooms with one server, should it be required in the future.

For the recording and streaming requirements REACH installed encoders in each training room connected to a REACH server in the network center via the school’s network infrastructure.

At Nanyang Business School, there are some excellent lecturers who excel in certain topics. Unfortunately there is a limitation of time schedule relating to those teachers. As such the School uses REACH’s system to record and live broadcast those Lecturer’s lessons. This enables more students to benefit by receiving or following the lessons live or via VOD. This helps to expand the teaching resources effectively.

The system also helps lecturers improve their teaching skill by watching their recorded courses.

2.Recording and Streaming for experts’ speech. In order to raise the academic standard, Nanyang Business School usually invites famous experts for academic exchange, and to address the student cohort. It’s a very precious chance for students to hear these experts share their knowledge and wisdom. But due to space and time constraints, not all the students can be accommodated.
