Like Q-Sys is the Present and Future of Pro AV

“It’s wonderful to see everyone together, knowing and sharing the newer things on take in person” exults Sam, as she is fondly called in the AV industry. “You can’t replace the energy, atmosphere and the excitement of physically being at the show,” she says. “Particularly for the domain of AV, the appreciation and experience of technology is not complete unless one is physically there at the place done by that technology; and therefore, it’s incredible to be here.”

“We changed the AV industry over a decade ago with the launch of Q-Sys which was built on a flexible software-based foundation and a unified systems-based IP architecture. Q-Sys is the only platform with a robust audio engine, video engine and control engine where processing of all three happens at the software layer. And because it’s a software-based system, introducing simple firmware updates has allowed us to consistently improvise and add various features and functionalities like AEC, VoIP, AVoIP, third-party device control, AVB, remote management and much more over time” asserts Rajesh Mittal, managing director, South West Asia, QSC; as he discusses the growing impact of software within the professional AV domain. Rajesh explains that Q-Sys’ open architecture allows users to seamlessly integrate hardware, software and services to create a large ecosystem of solutions that can be enhanced as and when the need arises. And with Q-Sys enabled QSC products use intel processing, standard network protocols, simplified drag-n-drop programming, and novel and agile scripting tools; system integrators can easily design and deploy a truly comprehensive system that can be controlled through a single unified platform seamlessly, without the need for investment into any additional hardware; thereby saving on time, effort and money.

Sam, a Yoga practitioner besides being a technopreneur, as it is, loves the country India for more reasons than just AV. “It’s so huge, so many languages, so diverse and intense, and at the same time so much appreciation of technology,” she elaborates. “Everyone knows India as a huge centre for Information Technology, and innovation that happens here, and the sheer entrepreneurship that is passionate to create more value.” While she relishes her (second) visit to India, and its ‘crazy tapestry’ she has her task cut out. “I’m looking forward to meeting more and more of our members, and knowing more about the business,” says Sam. Her takeaways from the show? What are our members’ concerns; what do they think about the AVIXA exchange; how were the pandemic times for them; and how do we navigate the post pandemic future.

SI India Awards organisers Spinworkz Pte Ltd and Shyamindira Media Networks have announced that the 5th edition of SI India Awards will be back in 2023.

“We do notice there is a visible disappointment in the industry over our not holding the Awards event; while it is painful not to have the Awards this year, it is so much vibeful that our missing is felt so intense,” said Ram Bhavanashi, director, Shyamindira Media Networks. “When we held the Awards last year virtually – in the thick of the pandemic – our objective was to acknowledge those that the industry had lost, and rally the industry, which we believe we achieved,” he said. “This year, we see the industry is recouping, and several SIs told us meeting our deadlines would be difficult, as their projects have just picked up pace.

“We, therefore, felt it is judicious to give them a breathing space this year, and allow them to come back strong with good numbers next year,” Ram asserted.

“In addition we are re-looking at how we can give more value to the sponsors and winners of the Awards. Part of the plan is to invite more end-users so that they can appreciate the work done by SIs,” said Thomas Prakasam, director, Spinworkz Pte Ltd “We are also looking at more categories and a revamp of our awards programme. In 2023 we hope to bring a bigger awards programme for all to enjoy.” SIIA winners from past edition.

It couldn’t have been a better place for Rahi Systems than the InfoComm India show floor. In a world that is increasingly getting collaborative and needing a working coexistence of multiple technologies (coming from multiple vendors) on an agnostic platform, Rahi has a huge stake to claim, and it does it with purpose and passion.

In 2015, Vega had a small booth at InfoComm India. Fast forward seven years, and they are occupying a huge booth at the front of the hall at this year’s show. Joseph Blessing, Managing Director of Vega Global India and MEA, states with a smile, “our booth reflects how we have grown in India”. After the disruptions caused by COVID-19, the company is using the platform to reconnect with partners and clients. “We are also helping people get comfortable again with face-to-face engagements after more than two years of limited interactions. The booth has been designed for visitors to

Matthew further comments, “The acceleration of the use of collaboration tools during COVID-19 now allows us to show more complete solutions at the booth. Though we are brand agnostic, our objective is to show how hardware has caught up with software and offers even better collaborative experiences, regardless of where you are joining meetings or discussions. Though face-toface can never be replaced, collaboration tools previously used to connect remotely as physical meetings were impossible can now continue to help extend relationships and not just limit those faceto-face meet-ups.”

“Any technology needs to be tangible, and experiential,” Rohit asserts. “InfoComm shows are the platforms to demonstrate that competency,” he says. “We have been missing this opportunity for the last two years; we’re happy to be back.”

The New Delhi-based Start-Up founded in 2019 – from the entrepreneurs of Burlington, New Jersey-headquartered ‘smart communicator’ Tacodi – having been moved by the ‘Make in India’ vibe looked at the opportunity in the video-conferencing hardware domain that is dominated either by the Western or by the Chinese manufacturers, and decided to pursue the ground.

Tacodi is obviously benefitting by the presence of its own R&D facility based in India.

Hard hit by the unprecedented health scare, life and businesses across the world came to a grinding halt – amidst chaos all over the place – and evidently, audio visual industry couldn’t quite stand immuned to the situation. It struggled like many other industry domains; suffered losses and miseries of all kinds and measures, including thousands of human lives. (At the time of making this report, the stats of the pandemic, as per the global COVID watch platform worldometer stood at 60 crore-plus registered casualties thus far, and loss of lives counted at 64,88,072.)

First, it came up with remote working, and working from home, to avoid crowding; then with touchless device systems to avoid human touch, and even temperature monitors to check infected infiltrations.

Simultaneously, it reinvented and professionalized the otherwise just-customary video connects into webinars of Zooms and Teams, in addition to the existing Webex platform. The hitherto conventional videoconferencing had been elevated to scaled-up ‘collaborative’ formats. Further, the much-hyped CFH got elevated to CFACD (connect from anywhere, any device).

We’ve Seen it All. What’s Next?

by Ram Bhavanashi

SI Asia did have this question for some time, and here tries to find a few ‘guesstimates’… When the coronavirus fears began spreading from one geography to the other in early 2020, no one had a measure of what the impending pandemic would be like, but as the dreaded COVID-19 engulfed the world by the first quarter of the year, it virtually meant many things to many people.

OEMs suddenly found a new world of opportunities to devise their systems for the hyflex world.

Strengthened by much better medical systems and means, the COVID-19 numbers might not scale up against the infamous Spanish Flu, but the intensity of disruption has apparently been manifold to its nearest precedent.

However, notwithstanding the vagaries of virus-dominated world processes, AV industry strived to find its vibes with its men and machines. It quickly came out with its own solutions to cope up with the situation, and contribute to a healthy living and communication systems.

COVID-19, for a strange reason, had been many a thing for many people. Hard lesson for some; much needed reality take for some others; blessing in disguise for some other sections; new technology, new services, and service models, and new opportunities for many others in manufacturing and servicing segments. The big question that a few ask is ‘what’s next’?

“Intelligentsia of the technology world had long been making high claims of ‘Disruptive Technology’ for some time, and it came calling on the world in the most unwelcoming fashion,” a humanist from an NGO commented. “It’s been such a typical thing that even 30 months after the outbreak, global medical research community is still struggling to find its origin and solution,” he said. “It disrupted everything; and the world is still not free from its grip.”

Crowding had been replaced by Clouding. Virtually, a parallel world emerged with a ‘new normal’ tag. AV designers and space designers suddenly got a new spec to work on: a hybrid model that is flexible for on-site and off-site, single, or multiple connects.

Thanks to the mechanizations of IT industry that comes out with new concepts more often than anticipated- the SaaS (software as a service) captured the fancy of some sections of the AV industry as well, particularly during those limited troughs of ‘depression.’

precedent is already there for the current dynamic of ‘hyflex.’

Comes an answer from Kaushik Mukhopadhyay, the MD-CEO of AVID India: “While the pandemic may have had taught us all lesser AV mortals a few lessons on what the ground reality really is, how the ‘new normal’ needs to be adapted to, and whether or not hybrid models are really the way forward, the fact remains that everything that we sell revolves around two factors - technology and services.”

However, there appears other possibilities, if not requirements too.

Ability to connect and work or learn via any device, from anywhere with minimum or no human-to-human physical contact unless and until warranted, he says. That brings a few critical things to place.

8

No crowding the spaces, no travelling long distances & incremental costs. Just connect with minimum effort in space and So,time.a

“Perhaps we’re ahead of time, and the concepts could not gain wider currency,” recalls Abhimanyu. “The industry had been riding high on many aspirations newly-sprung up investment opportunities, so we had to stay put on the otherwise futuristic models,” he says. “Now, the pandemic has again necessitated those models, which we are already familiar to dish out.”

“IoT would be the certain driving technology of the future,” endorses Shyl Kumar Balu, managing director of CTW Systems, the Bengaluru-based enterprise thoroughly focused on IoT applications. “We have long been prophesying this; due to the inevitable, and increasing dependency of men on machines in multiple numbers, and more from a distance; this had actually been in the making, even before the COVID-19,” asserts Balu. “Now the pandemic has only expedited it.”

It’s only a sort of reinvention of the existing, if not the old. “In a sense, it’s actually like the idiomatic ‘old wine in the new bottle,’ says Abhimanyu Gupta, director of ACTIS Technologies. “We had been doing this quite for some time now, and nothing really new,” he says. “Except that the current situation is borne out of a global health scare.”

In the wake of the COVID-induced hybrid working models, the new concept of AV as a Service (AVaaS) is said to be gradually emerging onto the scene.

Driven by sheer economies of scale and precious travel time and money consumptions, the industry had long ago rolled itself into huddle rooms, collaborative and unified communications where small groups of professionals from across distant locations could collaborate on the cloud and execute the business proceedings.

Currently, it’s this hyflex the industry is negotiating its future with. What’s next then?

According to the ACTIS director, the Mumbai-headquartered AV design and integration major had long ago brought into place the models similar to Huddle Rooms and AVaaS.

“It does come with good economies of scale, for the simple fact that users can hire AV as only the OPEX for the required occasions, and not like a CAPEX,” remarks Balu.

COMMENTARY

According to him, technology will keep evolving and will continue to be dictated by needs and use cases. Costs, form factors, applications, and flexibility will (continue to) drive the evolution and adoption of each technology with its associated benefits. From a broader perspective, “visual experience continues to get enhanced, from laser light sources in projectors, to OLEDs and dvLEDs that offer increasing resolutions with decreasing pixel/ pitch sizes,” feels the AVID chief. “UC products have taken full advantage of hybrid working spaces and have quickly emerged with improved intelligence, optics and audio quality. Onboard computing has evolved heavily – from replacing media players to System on a Chip (SoC), with faster and higher processing power that can run multiple applications and software platforms.” Further, “IoT will be a major driver for the display industry and our connected future,”says Kaushik. “Technology (formats) that works together, can be controlled remotely, and drives data and intelligence back to us,” he explains. “In today’s world, we must be able to control, troubleshoot, update, correct, deploy, and engage with our technology remotely. Having to deploy resources is difficult, and IoT is a driver for this.” Being able to communicate with sensors becomes a major need for the industry. SoC will play a critical role in this as we see more intelligence and smart products being deployed within the displays That, themselves.”perhaps, describes the emerging scenario in totality.

Explains the CTW Systems chief: “The diktats of the hybrid world meant that we need to coexist with flexible formats. Companies no longer feel the need for large office spaces with huge technology set-ups. Space, and technology designers are required to reinvent the metrics of work and learning spaces.

With most companies – having been bolstered and ‘boosted’ with vaccinations – wanting their employees to return to offices, the question many ponder over is what the emerging world would be like? What technology, what format, with what spec and space?

The ACTIS director, however, remarks quickly that ‘the AVaaS would not be an immediate necessity or happening; it may gradually shape up in the next two or three years.’

“Hyflex, IoT, SoC, and AVaaS- all come to signify one integrated domain, and that is the holistic ICT,” observes Narendra Naidu, managing director and Principal Consultant at Rhino Engineers. “ICT is taking wider and wider wings by the day, and permeating every possible sector that humans can comprehend.”

COMMENTARY

“While the conventional domains like corporate AV or education have long harnessed it, the latest credential is from the Tourism (Spiritual), and Infotainment,” explains the Rhino chief. “The biggest testimonial to this is the large number of museums and other large tourism-potential sites that have been transformed into ‘Experiential AV’ showcases in the country.”

“It is a domain rewriting the conventional specs of technology,” comments Naidu. “It is evolving rather stronger; as the pandemic

Evidently for his thought line, there has been a spurt of Infotainment projects of scale in recent times, amounting to millions of dollars and involving complex systems, besides number of people. While the otherwise complex 3D projection mapping has become a commonplace, the new fancy appears be for formats like aqua screens, and large scale installs.

“As installations continue to get more complex and require more flexibility, systems needs are necessitating a shift from hardware to software-based audio, video and control platforms to deliver the required experience for the multitude of markets and applications,” Rajesh observes. “With a software-based approach, users can easily add and modify capabilities with new firmware, rather than ripping and replacing hardware, saving organizations time and Accordingmoney.”

Sums up Amar Subash - VP & GM, Professional Solutions, APAC & India: “We dare say that we're well past the pandemic phase that forced everyone to rethink the way we interact, live and work.

Perhaps, that’s a great observation? Whether or not these models shape up the AV business dynamics, and how speedily or gradually, the indispensable stake that the manufacturing community holds cannot be discounted. And when one speaks about the manufacturing segment, it need not necessarily mean just hardware. There are many areas the OEM majors keep on researching and developing solutions that are essentially software-based, particularly the Audio segment.

The effective solution to this could be remotely managed Data Centres,” opines Kirti. According to her, it would ease out the pressure on the centralized locations in terms of men and machines as well as access intricacies. Remotely located smaller Data Centres can effectively handle the respective locations with minimum resources and risk factors too. Industry may soon find it necessary, feels the Kramer India Head.

“The industry needs to be at its dynamic best in outlook evolving newer solutions as the situation demands,” he asserts. “We’re on the right course now.”

For Rajesh Mittal, managing director, QSC India Private Limited (Q-SYS), there is a decisive shift happening from hardware to software-oriented solutions. So even as the industry and user community negotiates the post-pandemic curves via hyflex and other models, there would be a necessitating need for more focus on software orientation to products and solutions.

What's important now is to turn the page and embark on a new journey, one that will showcase path-breaking solutions in the right light.

Even as these formats shape up, there appears one more potential format in the making, or would be a certain need in the future. Remotely manageable Data Centres. Says Kirti Shetti, country manager of Kramer Electronics India: “The industry got used to remote working and connectivity for so long, and with more purpose and necessity during the pandemic. However, the question that kept many pondering over was how to manage/monitor the immense volumes of data coming in from multiple locations.

to him, it would also reduce the size and scale of human interventions which is an Important spec of new normal hyflex world. dilutes more and more, it is assuming still larger proportions, and the role of ICT is only to grow higher and wider.”

Counterfeit lamps have up to 30% less initial brightness compared to P-VIP lamps We analyzed many counterfeit lamps and have found that the gap between the initial luminance of counterfeits and original P-VIP® projector lamps is up to 30% in the worst situations. With these replacement counterfeit lamps, you may find a blurred subtitle while watching a movie or have difficulty in seeing the projected presentation slides. Electrode gap and projection brightness are strongly related Smaller electrode gap yields higher brightness. The test result shows that the electrode gap of counterfeit lamps is larger than

As a best-selling projector lamp, P-VIP projector lamps are impacted by many counterfeit lamps in market.

Uniform brightness distribution all over the screen is also a key to the visual feeling. Besides the projector lamp itself, ams OSRAM also takes great care of how the lamp perfectly integrates into each projector system to ensure uniform and stable optical output on the screen. This optimization of optics is what the counterfeit lamps cannot replicate.

Counterfeit lamps pale in comparison to P-VIP lamps

We produce P-VIP lamp burners in our Berlin factory. The burner tube is made of high purity quartz glass, which is capable of stable operation using high-pressure mercury up to 300 kPa for a long

Opening Day of InfoComm India 2022 Summit was a blast! Industry experts and delegates looking forward to reconnecting ties, recharging ideas and renewing knowledge ticked all their boxes. And they are raring to go for these next two days of the Summit. Industry Forums continue on Day 2

The first session in the morning is delivered by Rod Brown, CTS-D, CTS-I and Volunteer Instructor with AVIXA, who discusses “Project Management for AV”. Recognizing that every job in live events and installed AV requires coordination and management with internal and external stakeholders, he will elaborate how successful projects are the result of good planning – including drawing on previous experience – and ongoing communication and coordination between all parties. He will look at the basic – and beyond-basic – principles and practices of project management as they apply to the AV industry. Anyone involved in delivering projects to clients should attend.

After lunch break, AV Managers Day continues with Roopa Krishnamurthy, Acoustical Consultant, expounding the “Fundamentals of Acoustics”. She argues that awareness of how the ambient environment of a space affects the quality and propagation of sound – for instance, how reflective walls and floors create waves of echoes that smear speech intelligibility and musical timbre – has been slow to take root, even in dedicated performance venues. Acknowledging a change in recent years, driven by the complexity of sound in modern media and content, she explains that the field of acoustics is rife with myth, misinformation and marketing tactics not founded on true science. She will elaborate how acousticians and acoustical experts have backgrounds rooted in math and science, and spent years studying and honing their craft. She will also demonstrate how present-day acousticians and acoustical experts work on venues as diverse as classrooms, houses of worship, performance centers, courtrooms, and broadcast and recording studios. This 2-hour session provides an introduction to the principles of acoustics and their applications. Fundamental topics include the generation, transmission and reception of acoustic waves.

Day 3 of Summit closes with AVIXA Seminars

AV Managers Day runs throughout Day 2
