challenges associated with the pandemic, APAC is resuming the economic expansion that began in prior periods, driven by rising corporate activity and a growing middle class looking to spend. The region remains a mainstay for digital signage as retail growth pushes it to the top solution spot. Digital signage in APAC is forecast to grow from $14.3 billion to $20.1 billion (7% CAGR) from 2022 to 2027.
After a strong 2021, when pro AV revenue growth exceeded initial expectations and hit 11%, 2022 is set up to hit a new high-water mark for pro AV, reaching $263 billion globally, according to AVIXA’s 2022 Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA). Growth moderates in the coming years to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.9% from 2022 to 2027. While this is due in part to the slow-down in economic expansion across the globe, pro AV is still set to grow faster than most countries’ GDPs during the same Afterperiod.being upended during the pandemic, the venues and events market is demonstrating its resiliency through a high ranking among market opportunities. The market is forecast to grow from $30.7 billion in 2022 to $47.2 billion (9% CAGR) in 2027 globally. As consumers shift their spending back out of the home and inflationary pressures take their toll, residential spending on pro AV is set to decline. This enables transportation to shift upwards, consistent with a shift in spending towards travel again. The transportation market is forecast to grow from $11.8 billion to $18.3 billion (6.8% CAGR) globally from 2022 to 2027

The fastest growing markets for pro AV include many that are recession resistant. While pandemic recovery drives high growth in venues, media, and hospitality, others are benefitting from more stable investment. This includes government, energy, and Despitetransportation.somelingering
While the pro AV industry is experiencing strong growth, there are still headwinds in the current environment. Supply chain challenges are reaching a peak, now that demand is at all-time highs making it difficult for suppliers to keep up, particularly after having been battered by shortages and logistics issues over the past two years. Rising interest rates as governments seek to mitigate inflation are spurring fears of a recession as spending retreats in response. Hiring has also become increasingly challenging in a competitive employment landscape, resulting in labor shortages. Despite it all, the data from IOTA shows tailwinds prevailing and pro AV continuing to grow, even if growth is somewhat muted below what might be possible.

For this writer- no sooner his Emirates flight took off from Schiphol than the in-flight monitor screen on his co-passenger seat flashed the breaking news- the first COVID-caused casualty happened in Amsterdam. Most Indians from that flight, and those followed in others landed home amidst scary news and eerie atmosphere that turned into reality within weeks!March 25, the first lockdown was imposed in the country…and the rest is history.
While the first big sign of the trend is this very physical platform of InfoComm India 2022 exhibition and convention, there have been many catalysts in the months gone by, and many promise to unfold in the months to come.
Looking from where it all began, the threat of COVID-19 is no longer as serious as it had been two years ago. With strong initiatives of vaccinations, the pandemic is certainly a much lesser scare today, which has enabled the country to open up and stride up albeit cautiously. The zing thing in now is passion to be proactive, and proactively seek all that was felt missing for over two years. While the industry never really stopped vibrating – barring those couple of lockdown dura tions – and continued to breathe through those stifling situa tions, it has already broken free, and proactively seeking its future, with all the passion.
“Yes, it is indeed history,” asserts an independent AV professional.
Mid Feb, 2020… Even as most Indian AVians began flying down from Amsterdam post the last edition of ISE in the Dutch capital – recalling those fist-bumps with European friends and Namaste gestures with most others – the news spaces began ranting with fears about the impending spread of the dreaded Coronavirus.

The observation probably summarizes the nearly-two years period that Indian audio visual industry lived. Everyone knows the kind of impact the industry suffered; travails and tribulations that marked the journey through the ‘testing’ times; losses of lives and businesses that dented its morale; the emotional quotient that had to be maintained; the brave hearts that stood up in defiance; the alternatives created; and the paradigm shifts that showed the way out, and defined the dynamics of future.

“It did impact, and derail the growth engines; but haven’t really deterred us,” observed Minhaz Tarapore, who supposedly travelled through the troubling times of Covid impact in the country. “We strived to stand through, and it’s time we moved past the panic of pandemic.”

Pandemic Passé; Passion Proactive by

While webinars with Zoom and Teams replaced on-site activities of trainings, roadshows, product launches and project design discussions, OEMs and Distribution Partners found ways to move the systems to sites, and Integrators managed to execute projects via special permissions and health precautions. Especially for projects in government segment.
‘Experiential AV’ – as the concept came to be referred to as –came into the reckoning in a big way, with large LED video walls, holograms, 3D projection mapping, AR, and VR formats coming together towards creating those WOW experiences.
5
VizExperts – the Delhi-based VR integration pioneer – has rolled out some of most fascinating projects during the period- most of them being done in Government and Security-sensitive areas.
The Mumbai and Bengaluru circuits – that had traditionally been strong markets for corporate, finance and high-end education –too have seen some of the most ambitious AV integration projects executed by integration leaders such as Actis, AllWave AV, AVID, Colcom, Godrej and Sigmabyte.Webegan working actively from May (2020) itself,” remarked Abhimanyu Gupta, director of Actis Technologies Most firms continued to work in hybrid model, with the work divided between office workspace and home for the staff who were not part of the field teams.
Delta Displays – who had been pioneering the command centre installs for SmartCity projects in the country – executed Kochi SmartCity’s Command Control Centre in June 2020 itself.
In a first-of-it-kind exercise, Kerala Police Academy, conducted a Police Passing Out Parade online from its newly renovated convention centre- in the thick of the lockdown restrictions. Kochibased KALITE taking the honours of executing the install. Projection mapping at Birsa Munda Museum in Ranchi.
Narendra Naidu, principal consultant and managing director of AV & Lighting design consulting major Rhino Engineers has apparently travelled ‘round-the-globe’ twice thus far this year, and still counting. This, in addition to 30+ cities in the country in July alone! Result- over a dozen prestigious projects worth a few hundred crores of rupees in the domain of Tourism AV. This, despite the travel and events industry bearing the brunt of COVID
Which is why- even as the dreaded coronavirus went about its ‘business’ across the country, a good majority of the AV community managed to make its way out and continued to execute projectsalbeit on a subdued scale.
COMMENTARY
Theimpact!combination of Amardeep Behl, chief of DesignHabit, and Harbir Singh of Pan Intellecom has seen some of the most ambitious projects in Infotainment segment across North India, with OEM majors like Christie, Delta, Digital Projection and Sennheiser accounting for some high stakes.
Bangalore-based Reynolds Inc. broke off the COVID-hold with India’s first Event Service in a drive-in format in Bengaluru as early as July 2020 itself.
Supported by the new thinking and initiatives by the central government, there have been quite a number of museums, forts, and landmark sites that have been mapped for AV, opening a new, rejuvenated chapter for AV integration credentials during the COVID time.
There have been quite a number of projects in Government segment – some of them involving high stakes technology and integration dynamics – that stood to testify the resilience Indian AV industry possessed, nay demonstrated. Despite the challenges, AV integration majors managed to work even in the thick of the restrictive environment- which is why the industry did have some fascinating project executions, though the numbers being far lower than pre-COVID time.

The high-profile event included involvement of dozens of technology professionals, apart from few hundreds of support workforce- leading up to thousands of religious seers congregating for a nation-watch address by the Prime Minister and the President of the There’scountry.nostopping for the Indian AVSI industry. No pandemic; no scare or threat, but Energy, with caution though.

“We had not only to deploy them in small numbers in phased manner, but also monitor the health parameters from time-totime,” observed Abdul Waheed, Managing Director of EYTE Technologies.
Crestron Electronics renewed its training sessions and Partners Meet in Bengaluru, with the new normal transforming to just as normal as it was during pre-Covid times.
Perhaps, the biggest event of people and processes coming together in the post-pandemic period was the launching of Statue of Equality – claimed to be the world’s second largest sitting statue – in Hyderabad in February this year.
Riding on the new energy levels, Kramer Electronics resumed its trusted, annual fare of country-wide Partners Meet Synapse initiative with renewed enthusiasm in June this year- with aspirations raising high.
“In fact, it was more convenient for us to take up the installation work during those time stretches for a simple reason that offices were relatively empty that facilitated hasslefree installation work,” observed Pankaj Ballad, associate director at the Bangalorebased Online Instruments Pvt Ltd Similar were the stories with some of the most prestigious corporate AV install projects like Tejas, Zydus, Walmart, BPCL, BCG-DLF, Veritas, IBM, NSC, and more.
Kochi SmartCity’s Command Control Centre. The Kerala Police Academy Passing Out Parade conducted online.
Statue of Equality - world’s second largest sitting statute. With those very aggressive campaigns of vaccination measures by the government too catalysing the enthusiasm and energy levels brewing up inherently in the ranks, Indian AV has – gradually but effectively – came over the crisis and began taking the new normal world to the next level.
When the Swiss banking major UBS opened their fifth India office in Hyderabad in December 2020, the EYTE consultants & AllWave-AV systems integration teams, who handled the project, have executed it commendably- by deploying small teams, and in phased manner, in accordance with health/safety regulations.
