MUSICAL DIRECTOR

Mr. Christopher Santanelli

meet the director

Brooke Maxwell and Jacob Richmond’s Ride the Cyclone (High School Edition) takes audiences on a thrilling, moving, and at times darkly humorous journey with six high school choir students whose lives are cut short in a freak accident aboard a roller coaster. In a bizarre twist of fate, when they awake in limbo, they can share their stories and win the ultimate prize – the chance to return to life.

Each character in this show represents a different part of the high school experience, from the overachiever to the misunderstood artist, the outcast to the popular kid. Behind each stereotype lies a complex, deeply human story. This musical challenges us to look beyond the labels we’re given and the personas we assume and encourages us to fnd empathy and understanding for those around us – something that feels especially relevant right now.

This show has been quite the journey. As a newer teacher and a newer theatre director, it has been a challenge in the absolute best way possible. I am still constantly learning…about my cast, my crew, my artistic process, and, most importantly, about myself. I invite you to sit back and watch our show about how Ocean, Mischa, Noel, Constance, and Ricky accept themselves and come to terms with who they are, even if life hasn’t given them the chance to fully explore it all.

Any production can be a huge project. And this show is certainly one that I could not have done alone. There are so many parents of both former and current students, families, friends, and community members who have given their time to these kids. But I must personally thank our amazing costume mistress and media center specialist, Ms. Robin Case. You have saved me more times than I can think, and I cannot thank you enough. To all my amazing and talented students: YOU are the reason why this show was possible. Love you, mean it.

And to my dad, my best friend, my rock…Thank you for always having my back and supporting me when I come to you with all my crazy theatre ideas. I couldn’t have asked for a better support system.

Life is not a game, it’s just a ride!

A note about the use of American Sign Language in this production: South Plantation High School is the only public high school in the Broward County Public School system which provides programing for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. As this theatre program strives to be an inclusive one, all our productions are either produced in the style of Theatre for the Deaf or are interpreted by our performers for our Deaf and Hard-of Hearing audiences.

A very special shout out goes to Mr. Jeff West, DHH Teacher here at SPHS! THANK YOU SO MUCH for working so diligently with our ASL Masters in making tonight’s show as truthful as it can be!
