A little less than two thousand years ago, the city of Jerusalem was terribly "troubled." From the political elite to the local brick layers, all had heard of the magnificent caravan of distant travelers looking for the "king of the Jews." For millenia, generations of Middle Eastern astronomers taught by Belteshazzar (more commonly known as Daniel) in Babylon studied the night sky; recording, interpreting and awaiting news of the long promised Rescuer.

Travelling over one thousand kilometers, these wise and educated men and their vast entourage discovered their goal: a "young child," the promised Messiah, Jesus the Christ. The offered him the finest gifts they could afford.

In a similar way, we too, here at Scoop, believe we have a gift. Though nothing like gold or frankincense, we love writing. So we recognize during this season of gift giving we recognize that our writing is a gift from God. Like the wise men, we give those gifts to Him and to you, our readers. So thank you and...

Winter Formal 2017 This year's Grade 10.2 CAS project was, by many accounts, a great success. From six o'clock to ten pm, students from grades 10 to 12 (with a few Grade 8 exceptions) danced, sang and laughed the night away.

Shout out to Ghalib for winning Best Dancer, among others.

LEADERS ON LEADERSHIP

DP Coordinator Ibu Alissa Jared Fraser One of the things Ibu Alissa fears most is control. "I love control," she explained.

"That's why religion can provide peace as an explanation for lack of control." Despite a strong faith in God, Ibu Alissa admits she still struggles. "In general, people love control. I'm afraid of losing control in the future." Turns out, she's not that different from the rest of us.

Whenever she's not working, which seems a rare thing, Ibu Alissa enjoys reading. When most people are asked about a recent book, they fumble and falter to try and make up a pretend title. Not Ibu Alissa. She rattled off titles and authors like Vygotsky, Peter Senge and Carol Ann Tomlinson. Most of her reading has been related to the Masters in Educational Technology she has been slaving over, however, she admits, "my greatest interest is science and theology. For some reason I love those two things." Indeed, the entire interview was filled with references to both science and theology, something she admits is often not considered compatible.

Called to Teach Ibu Alissa recounted how her parents had big plans for her life. "Being a traditional family, they wanted me to be a doctor or," she explains in her own words, "a money maker."

Something many of her DP Biology students can relate to as they prepare for university.

Despite the initial lack of support, Ibu Alissa recalls how her path to education began. "It's a long story. When I was about to graduate, my major had nothing to do with education – just biology. But since I was a Sunday school teacher and a tutor, I had thoughts of being a teacher. Before I graduated, I was part of a Christian organization where they had a fiveday retreat. Many people had talks about careers. Before I went to the retreat, I prayed to God about my calling. During the retreat, I could choose three career-related seminars.

The first I couldn't remember, but the second was about education. It's hard to explain, but, in that place, God spoke to me. The seminar speaker spoke a lot about Indonesia's need for good educators."

Speaking about her parent's opinion of her career choice now she laughs, "Now my mom suggests my children should be teachers."

More than a Teacher However, Ibu Alissa is more than just an educator. As head of the Diploma Programme at a reputable IB World School, Ibu Alissa manages teachers, students, exams, budgets, students, training, parents, universities, students, classes and students. All while raising a family, finishing a Master's degree and apparently finding time to read books. Her opinion about leadership? "Anyone can do it." Of course, she quickly adds that she's talking about managers and "everyday leaders". Some leaders, those she refers to as "Great Leaders", she believes are appointed by God. Pointing to Scripture, Ibu Alissa expounds on various individuals God set in a time and place to accomplish His plans.

A Leader on Leadership Considering that Ibu Alissa believes many leaders are made, rather than born, we asked her what she felt SPH does best in teaching students the qualities of a good leader. "The Yayasan (referring to Yayasan Pendidikan Pelita Harapan, the organization responsible for the five SPH schools among others) is very strong in giving us the Biblical Worldview. The positive great leaders always have values that the Bible also teaches us. Values like honesty and humility. Like Mahatma Ghandi. Although he wasn't a Christian, he had many values that come from the Bible." While the Biblical Worldview is strong with SPH, according to Ibu Alissa, the school could serve its students better if it focused less on hierarchical structures and more on fractal chaos, a concept she recently learned from Mr. Jacob's TOK class. Referring to Peter Senge's theories on organizational learning, Ibu Alissa explained through diagrams, examples and anecdotes what a strong organization looks like in the 21st century. She's very fond of it. Visit her room, as any Biology student knows, and you'll find elements of Senge's ideas everywhere.

Whether this change is possible where there already exists a strong hierarchical culture? "It's very hard. Hierarchy is very important [in many organizations]."Â

Moving Forward Despite the myriad of roles and responsibilities Ibu Alissa handles, she is determined to spread the good news gleaned from her Masters. "It has been a long time since I was a hungry reader or a hungry learner but after my Masters class I think I've gotten back to that habit." Speaking of when she was younger, "I had a specific budget every month to buy books." A habit everyone would benefit from adopting. The goal she's focusing on the most these days? "I really want to help teachers learn that they don't need to stay in their comfort zones." She uses her Masters as an example of pursuing excellence in what she does, rather than being content with mediocrity (not that anyone can blame Ibu Alissa of that). Â What advice she'd give her younger self? "Learn to say no." She clarified, "sometimes not saying no dragged me into bad situations. I was trying to please people, but in the end, I hurt them." How has she managed with her own advice? "I'm still working on it but I can now identify when I should say, "I think I have to say no." I really want the best for you so I have to say no."

A fairly telling conclusion to the determination and drive that pushes Ibu Alissa forward and upward is her response to whether she would choose death by chocolate or death by daylight. Laughing she says, "That's difficult!" but concludes with wise words, "Death by chocolate means I'm trying to please myself. Death by daylight means I can still do something with my life."

Everyone loves a good café. Whether you’re loyal to coffee, more inclined to tea, or even prefer hot chocolate - a café that suits your personal taste is always a necessity.

We here at SCOOP understand the importance of a good café: to destress and let go after a long week at school, to hang out and make memories with friends, or even to find the exact environment to get focused in. We combed Jakarta for the right food, the right drinks, and the right atmosphere to help improve the way you relax, socialize, and work.

Giyanti Giyanti was the first café we stopped at. Located in Jalan Surabaya no. 20, right next to Jakarta’s famed antique flea market. If we had to describe Giyanti Coffee Roastery in a few words, they would be: quirky, warm, and exciting.

The café itself, which has been operating since 2012, is split into several sections, one of which features a sheltered outdoors area. The interior is warm with brightly hued decor, varying between wooden textures and unique art pieces. But don’t worry about feeling the heat, the indoor sections are perfectly cool.

Alongside the eccentric layout comes some interesting music choices; an eclectic mix including electronic chill, fast-paced indie among others. The vibe is cozy, the wifi’s free, and the coffee is good.

We ordered two of their bestsellers - a strong flat white and some gluten-free brownies.

The brownies are rich, decadent, melt-in-your-mouth delights while the coffee, true to its name, helps give a strong caffeine boost necessary for those weekend work sessions.

Prices range from Rp.70.000 to 90.000.

If you’re looking for a tucked-away, colorful cafe to get comfortable while you work, check out Giyanti.

Anomali The first thing we took note of about Anomali is that it’s spacey - so if you’re someone who likes to have your work a little more spread out, this is a great option. The second thing we noticed is that when we stepped in, they were playing Childish Gambino over the speakers a definite win in our book, though later on they also played other chill R&B, indie, and folk songs.

Open since 2007, Anomali has several branches throughout Jakarta. Besides standard cafe food and drinks, Anomali also sells meals.

Some additional highlights include their own brand of chocolate in unique flavors, collapsible cups, and equipment to brew your own coffee.

Split into an outdoors area and an indoors one, the layout is clean and contemporary, done up in neutral colors with black and white being predominant and accompanying wooden furniture and tiled floors. Don’t mistake it for being cold, though, because the bright lighting and comfortable yet productive atmosphere prevent that exact thing.

Plants decorate the sparsely covered walls, giving a splash of natural color.

We tried their Creme Brulee Fusion; a comforting and smooth caramel and coffee drink that appealed to the senses without being overly sugary. Because of there's so much variety to the menu (matcha brownies, Indonesian food such as otak-otak, and even an array of Western and Indonesian meals) prices also range anywhere from Rp.50.000 to 100.000 on average.

Anomali is what we’ve deemed the best cafe for those days when you need to simply sit down, get some food, and focus.

Shophaus - Pigeonhole/Gelato Secrets To end the day, we headed to Menteng Shophaus, which hosts a variety of restaurants and outlets. The cafe we went to – Pigeonhole, opened in 2015 in Menteng - is on the first floor and shares its space with Gelato Secrets. Because the day was winding down, we managed to get in at a time where the area wasn’t too crowded. Pigeonhole is small and cozy but very modern - concrete greys and clean whites contrast well with light-toned wooden furniture, potted plants, and warm lighting.

Pigeonhole specializes in beverages. Predominantly (but not limited to) black, white, and special coffees such as their affogato and blended espresso drinks. Drink prices often range between Rp. 25.000 to 50.000. The café stands out among others as their baristas are given the chance to experiment and create seasonal beverages. The baristas are true lovers of coffee that are very involved in the process of creating and selling their drinks, so you know that what you’re getting is truly made with care and expertise.

We tried out the iced matcha from Pigeonhole and got it with a gelato combo of charcoal and rose petals from Gelato Secrets. You can choose to sweeten your drinks so you get exactly the level of sweetness you’re looking for. The gelato was also a hit - the gritty texture of the charcoal vanilla contrasting with the sweet but tangy taste of the rose petals, which made for an interesting but delicious contrast. Overall, beautifully crafted gelato and matcha - exactly how one should end their night.

If you’re looking for a cozy and intimate place to grab some gelato and/or some good, well-cared for coffee - alone or with a friend - Pigeonhole and Gelato Secrets at Shophaus Menteng is the place you should be going to.

Unsung Heroes Heizel Tan, Grade 6

There are many heroes. Some fictional like DC comic's Superman or Marvel's the Batman. There are also many real-life heroes like Frans Kasiepo and Sultan Hasanuddin. Sometimes, it's easy to think a hero is only in books and movies. However, heroes are among us, even at school. Take, for example, Mas Mun and Mba Ira. For starters, they provide students drinks that satisfy. They are patient and really kind to many of the students.

They can often be good friends to talk to. Most heroically, they consistently come to school every day regardless of their personal situations.

Considering them as local heroes should help you treat them differently. Being polite or making sure to say thank you every time gives them the respect they deserve. Find a way this week to appreciate them.

The Korean War was a conflict that was caused by the Cold War, an ideological tension between capitalism and communism. The most well-known countries that were involved in the Cold War were the United States and the Soviet Union (otherwise known as Russia today). The United States and the Soviet Union were in a tense relationship, with the US being wary of the dictatorial regime of Joseph Stalin (who killed millions of people) and with the Soviet Union being denied a legitimate part in the international community by the US. During World War II, both countries fought together to end Nazism. After the war, however, the relation between the two countries became one of distrust and tension.

The US began to think that the Soviets were planning to take over the world, by expanding to Eastern Europe while the Soviets believed that the US were intervening the Soviet Union in international relations. SPH SOCCER SEASON

It has been one roller coaster ride for the SMA Boys and Girls Soccer team this year. Sadly, the season has ended. For some of the players, it is the last year that they will be playing while for others, their careers are just getting started.

First off, let us start with the ladies. Our girls had a spectacular season finding themselves in third place at the end of the season. The Girls Soccer team started the season passively, only to notch the pace up and carry home one win after another. By the end of the regular season, they found themselves being the Second Seed in the West, allowing them to play a home game in the Quarterfinals hosting UPH College. They won a well-deserved 2-1 through a comeback in overtime to secure a spot in the Semifinals which was again played at home. In the Semis, the Girls lost 1-0 to sister school SPH Lippo Village in overtime but secured the third spot in the entire league after making AIS admit defeat through a 2-1 victory. Please also take into account that the girls managed to secure another 3rd place finish in the Mid-Season Jamboree which was played at British School Jakarta.

Boys Soccer Season The boys soccer team played equally as hard this season. They managed to secure a top-6 finish overall as their run ended in the Quarterfinals. The boys team started the season with several wins up their sleeves (which include 3-0 WO against AIS, 3-2 vs SPH Lippo Village), only to face a losing streak against ACS, Global Jaya, and Santa Laurensia. However, the boys quickly turned the situation around as they ended the regular season with more wins which included several impressive results (10-1 vs SPH Kemang Village, 8-3 vs British School Jakarta). The boys found themselves as 3rd seed in the West coming into the Playoffs. They faced Santa Laurensia once more which ended with an unfortunate loss at Penalty Shoot-out against the Catholic school. The boys managed to control most of the game, leading 2-1, only to concede at the very last minute. Our boys also managed to place 4th in the Jamboree.

The head coach for the boys, Coach Dona, held a massive role towards how aggressive the boys team played. This obviously lead to a prosperous team with an average of 3.44 goals per game in the regular season.

The New Year essentially marks the beginning of a year. It’s is a special time for everyone. In some countries, the start of the year is even made a national holiday. Yet the New Year is not only the start of a new page on the calendar; it also symbolizes a new beginning—which many may define as a renewed self, an improved one. It is always healthy to expect better of ourselves in the coming time. The New Year is one of those times when many are inspired to change for the better.
