International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day takes place on March 8, which falls on a Monday this year. On this day, it’s all about celebrating women and their rights and just appreciating all the women in this world. This day is included as a global holiday that started in America in around 1909. Every year on this day, there are usually new different themes, which for this year happens to be: #ChooseToChallenge, with the goal to highlight the importance of challenges in creating a genderequal world. Many hashtags are usually created for this day evolving around the given theme of the year, especially because hashtags are popular on social media. Everyone is free to celebrate and support this day, as it is one great day to make a positive change, especially for women.

COMMON WEALTH day

by Gino The Commonwealth of Nations is an association of countries, mostly composed of countries previously ruled by the British Empire, who advocates and strives for the promotion of “prosperity, democracy and peace, amplify the voice of small states, and [to] protect the environment.”

Every year on the second Monday of March, Commonwealth countries come together to celebrate what is called, “Commonwealth Day”. This stems from the previously named “Empire Day” that started after the death of Queen Victoria and celebrated the identity of the British Empire. However, by the 1950s, the Empire was losing its power and each of the ruled territories was gaining its own independence. By 1958, Empire Day was named as British Commonwealth Day and later in 1966, it was renamed again as Commonwealth Day.

In the present time, Commonwealth Day is mostly observed by remembering the bond between the different countries, which is done by a multi-cultural and multi-faith celebration in the Westminster Parliament. Many representatives fly the flags of the different Commonwealth nations and celebrate the different cultures, alongside a message from the queen herself that is broadcasted among the Commonwealth countries. Different activities are also done during the Commonwealth Day such as small Commonwealth Games, project studies of the different Commonwealth countries (ex.

Geography, biology, culture, etc.), and showing the different cultural diversity through performances and exhibitions. This year, on the 8th of March, the theme for the Commonwealth Day revolves around “Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming,” which promotes and observes how the Commonwealth countries are developing and striving for “its biggest goals, like protecting natural resources and boosting trade.” Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, some of the events on Commonwealth Day this year will not happen. However, although we are not part of the Commonwealth of Nations, it would still certainly be exciting to participate in studying and learning the diverse cultures and values of 2.4 billion people around the world!

SAINT PATRICK'S DAY

Saint Patrick's Day falls on

March 17,

which is on

Wednesday for 2021. Saint Patrick’s Day is a celebration for an Irish patron saint who brought Christianity to Ireland and is the world's most celebrated day, especially in Ireland and America. Though it is not an official holiday, many people still consider Saint Patrick’s day as a national holiday. It is the day where everybody wears green and parades fill the street. The first-ever parade for Saint Patrick’s Day was in America instead of Ireland. In 1601, a few Irish protestants marched up the street of what is now Saint Augustine to celebrate and remember the saint who brought Christianity to Ireland.

Now, Saint Patrick’s Day is such a big celebration with more than 2 million people attending the parade. This day also is a celebration for all Irish luck and green things. Thus, on Saint Patrick’s Day, everyone wears the colour green to bring luck to themselves and the people around them.

World Down Syndrome Day 21 march 2021 st

World Down Syndrome day happens on the 21st of March, where people participate in multiple events to respect the lives of those with Down Syndrome. As Down Syndrome happens when a person has a third copy of the twenty-first chromosome, the date of Down Syndrome day was picked out to be the 21st day of March (because 21/3).

Down Syndrome has affected people both physically and mentally. Each year, 6,000 babies in the US are born with Down Syndrome, meaning 1 in 700 people in the US are born with it. There are three types of Down Syndrome, first being the most common one, Trisomy 21, then, Translocation Down Syndrome and Mosaic Down Syndrome. About 95% of people have Trisomy 21, which is when there are three copies of the 21st chromosome. Translocation Down Syndrome affects 3% of those who are affected by Down Syndrome, which is when the extra chromosome, is attached or translocated to another. Mosaic Down Syndrome, which affects 2% of everyone who has this condition, is when only some of the cells have three of the 21st chromosome while others have the usual two. This extra chromosome causes physical changes and developmental challenges. The person affected by it usually has a flattened face, almond-shaped eyes that point upwards, a short neck, small ears, a tongue that sticks out of the end of the mouth, small hands and feet, poor muscle strength or loose joints and a shorter height. Other problems include heart defects, hearing loss, eye diseases, ear infections and obstructive sleep apnea.

World Down Syndrome day started when an organization named, “Down Syndrome International” asked Brazil to make the 21st of March the official day to honour those who have Down Syndrome. There are many ways to celebrate this day. The first is to wear mismatched socks since chromosomes are shaped like socks and people with Down Syndrome carry an extra copy of the 21st chromosome. Second, people also can participate in a race where they have an option to run, hike, walk, bike or swim for 3.21 miles at any place and pace on the day. Others could also join parties which include dancing, karaoke, music, food, games and raffles. A Rock 21 Concert would usually be held which is a band created by a bunch of people from the age of 10 and above. Community group events also take place along with local businesses setting up sales and allowing customers to earn certain things like coupons. Last, but most importantly, is to spread awareness about Down Syndrome and allow those people to have the same opportunities and freedom as everyone else. Let's look forward to March 21!

EARTH HOUR Earth hour is a symbolic lights-out event started by the WWF in Sydney, 2007. This event that is held every year on the last Saturday of March eventually became the world’s largest environmental movement. During the event, millions of people in more than 180 countries switched off their electricity to show support for planet Earth. The act of turning off electricity becomes a symbolic representation to call attention to climate change. This action becomes a catalyst for a positive environmental impact, driving a major change by harnessing the power of the people and collective action.

It is important to sustain our nature because it has not only provided us with food, water, clean air and other services, it is our strongest allies to fight against climate change. Protecting nature is the most powerful, and cost-effective solution to conquer the climate crisis.

In 2021, the world leader would come together during the key global conference and forums to set future environmental conservation plans for the next decades. Every crucial political decision will determine the faith of all climate action, nature and sustainable development – every decision will directly affect the fate of humanity and our planet for the years to come.

UCL, which stands for UEFA Champions League, was a group stage that ended a few months ago.

With 8 groups and 4 teams in each group, only 2 teams in each group qualify for Round 16. Those teams are Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Mönchengladbach, Manchester City, FC Porto, Liverpool, Atalanta, Chelsea, Sevilla, Dortmund, Lazio, Juventus, Barcelona, Paris-Saint Germain, and RB Leipzig. Round 16 started only a few weeks ago, but not all teams have played yet. However as of February 20, 4 games have been played, and here are the results: Barcelona vs PSG; 1-4 for PSG. RB Leipzig vs Liverpool: 0-2 for Liverpool. Sevilla vs Dortmund: 2-3 for Dortmund. Porto vs Juventus: 2-1 for Porto.
