RULERS OF TINY NATION

Many of us have heard of countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, South Africa, Thailand, etc. However, have you ever heard of countries called Sealand, Atlantium, or the Aerican Empire? Sealand is a self-proclaimed country off the coast of the United Kingdom that has a World War 2 watchtower as its territory. Atlantium is also a self-proclaimed country inside of Australia, that has an elected monarchy system for its government. Meanwhile, the Aerican Empire is a self-proclaimed country with a dictatorial system, claiming to have territories in Australia, Mars, and Northern Pluto. Some of you probably have never heard of these countries in your Individuals and Societies class, the news, or from governments in general because they are not real countries. They are self-proclaimed countries called micronations that claim territories as huge as Northern Pluto to a size of a rock. Most rulers of micronations often do not fight for independence of any sort as micronations are created as a means of self-expression, typically for political expression. Now, let us look at some of the examples of micro countries and their rulers.

The Word ‘Anjay’ Being Illegal I’m sure that we’re all familiar with the word “Anjay." Yes, the word that is now illegal. It sure is interesting how a word so commonly said during casual talk, ends up being banned. How exactly did this happen?

The government states that “Anjay” is a verbal abuse equivalent to a curse word--a word that brings others down. Prior to the policy, the once trending slang, "Anjay", was used countless of times. However, instead of a verbal abuse, people used the word to praise something.

Evidently, there were many misconceptions.

The word was made illegal by Komnas PA, a part of the government whose task is to protect the children of Indonesia. Even though this new restriction has been criticized by some netizens, it continues to take place. This sparked yet another controversy as netizens questioned the government's decision to ban only “Anjay” and not other actual curse words. To answer that inquiry, we must first know that the word “Anjay” is the most commonly used "curse word" in social media. Those who don’t understand its meaning might perceive "Anjay" as a curse word. Thus, this leads us to where we are now. Because of the misunderstanding of its meaning, we have lost the liberty to use the word "Anjay."

OCD AWARENESS Week

As we are entering October, the International OCD Foundation has something fun for everyone to do during the second week of October! They encourage everyone to join and raise awareness towards those suffering from ObsessiveCompulsive Disorder (OCD)!

If you don’t know what OCD is or have only heard about it, it is a mental disorder characterized by a cycle of obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are unwanted intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that cause intense feelings of distress. People with OCD do not want to have these intrusive thoughts and most often, find them disturbing even if they seem irrational. The compulsions are what one does or engages to do, in order to alleviate the distress from their obsessions.

An example of obsessive thoughts are fear of harm, contamination, religious obsessions, or even unwanted thoughts of their sexuality. In order to alleviate their obsessions, patients with OCD often engage in compulsions of repeated checking, washing their hands, counting while performing a task to end with a “good” number, or even avoiding situations that trigger their obsessions.

Although these are the most common obsessions and compulsions of OCD, there are various other obsessions and compulsions that exist.

It may be normal for everyone to experience obsessions, however, the experience of someone with OCD is relatively more concerning. These obsessions and compulsions often take a huge time of their lives, proving to be a hindrance to their daily activities due to the distressing thoughts and compulsions.

So, what can we do to end the stigma experienced by patients with OCD? Every second week of October, the International OCD Foundation hosts an event called OCD Awareness Week. This year, the event will be held on October 11-17, and includes a “Virtual 1 Million Steps 4 OCD Walk� and live virtual event. Some more simpler things that you could do is simply spreading the word through social media! One way is to use the the hashtag #FaceYourFear, in which you show yourself exposed to your fears. BY HEIZEL I know that all of us are tired of this pandemic. We all can’t wait to go outside and not wear masks again. We can’t wait to meet up with friends and go to the mall. Well, that time might be near! CNBC Indonesia just posted that the antibody for Covid-19 that was tested on elderlies, as well as young people, proved to be a success! The anti-body proved to work to protect the trial volunteers from Covid-19. This vaccine also does not have any dangerous side effects, which is a remarkable sign. However, this successful antibody is quite expensive, in which each person will need 2 shots. This means that would cost each person almost 1 million Rupiah! But don’t worry, Stephanie Bancel, CEO of Moderna (the company that tested these anti-body), says that throughout the pandemic, the anti-body will be sold for less than the average market value.

However, after the pandemic has settled down, the value will go back to the normal market value, “We will work with the market," said Stephanie Bancel. As of right now, many of the government health officials are working on using the BPJS (Badan Penylenggara Jaminan Sosial) service so that most citizens would be able to retrieve antibodies for FREE. What do you guys think? I can’t wait to go out again without concern of the virus. Hopefully this antibody will be mass produced and distributed to the public very soon.

Based on the WHO’s data, 803,000 lives and counting were lost because of Covid19, which is a pretty large number. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we often forget about other diseases than Covid-19 that is still lurking on Earth and taking people’s lives--ones that have been lingering longer than Covid-19. These diseases are more infectious than Covid-19, where some of them have killed many more lives. The reason why the cure hasn’t been invented yet is because of the immense amount of funding needed. These diseases linger in animals either with a great population and a fast reproduction rate, or are unnoticeable and highly infectious. This article is a reminder that these viruses shouldn’t be forgotten simply because a greater threat has emerged in a sudden abrupt.

Even though tuberculosis has a cure, the bacteria can sometimes be fatal. The tuberculosis bacteria can also attack any part of the body such as the kidney, or even the spine and the brain, which is lethal. Another reason why tuberculosis is a deadly disease, is because they travel through air. When an infected person coughs, sneezes, or even speaks or sings, a person only needs to inhale a few of the tuberculosis’ germs to get infected too. After getting infected from tuberculosis, the germs slowly enter the lungs where it eats the lungs from the inside out. The germs will slowly decrease the lung’s capacity to breathe in air, causing the chest to fill up with blood, which liquidates the lungs. According to the World Health Organization, every year, 10 million people are infected by tuberculosis, in which 1.5 million from them are killed. This makes tuberculosis the “world’s top infectious killer.”

One of the most infectious diseases which spreads easily through the deadliest living being in the world: mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are animals that can almost be found everywhere in the world, and they bite every day and every night, looking for warm places to live in. This makes humans a perfect prey for mosquitoes, as human shelter is a really convenient place to reproduce. But not all mosquitoes are dangerous. Male mosquitoes don’t bite and only feed on plant juices, and therefore can’t transmit diseases. The female mosquitoes are the ones that bite animals that contain blood in them and whose skins are easy to pierce through with their maxillae. They need protein from blood for the development of their eggs.

Mosquitoes are the perfect animal for spreading diseases because when they suck blood, the diseases inside a person can enter the mosquito and transfer it to other people, while also reproducing in a really fast pace. They are responsible for the cause of epidemics such as the Zika epidemic in 2015-2017 and the Chikungunya epidemic in 2013-2014, along with the spread of various diseases such as Dengue Fever, Yellow Fever, and the most dangerous of them all, Malaria. Malaria is caused by microorganisms or unicellular organisms called plasmodium which completely relies on mosquitoes as its host. After a mosquito injects its maxillae into an organism, the plasmodia enters the liver to hide with the big cells and as mentioned earlier, eat them from the inside. After reproducing inside the large cells in the kidney, the plasmodium changes into its next form: merozoites. They now multiply even more, bursting several of our kidney’s cells, and looks for their next target which are our red blood cells.

The cycle repeats and pieces of our body’s cells burst as the merozoites reproduce inside them, which causes a new problem--our dead cells’ toxic waste, which triggers our immune system. If Malaria isn’t treated, they can repeat their cycle on entering our body’s cells and bursting out in some of our important organs such as the brain. If the Malaria virus enters the brain, it has the ability to cause comas or neurologic damage. According to the WHO’s data of Malaria in 2017 alone, 435,000 deaths due to Malaria occurred globally. What makes the virus so infectious is because some medications aren’t effective because the parasite can resist the drug and mosquitoes have become the its host.

Pneumonia is the world’s largest infectious respiratory disease to people of all ages. The infection occurs in the lungs caused by viruses and bacteria. Pneumonia is the largest infectious cause of death for children worldwide where in 2017 alone, has killed 2.56 million people worldwide in which 800,000 of them were children and 15% of the children infected are below the age of 5. The infection causes our lung sacs or, alveoli to be inflamed, making it hard for oxygen to reach our bloodstream and painful when a person breathes.

Pneumonia spreads through airborne droplets when someone coughs or sneezes and can mostly be found in a person’s nose, throat, along with spreading through blood transmission too.

Children with a weak immune system (which can be caused by external factors such as malnutrition and pre-existing sicknesses such as measles or HIV) is more prone to getting Pneumonia. Though people are always infected by diseases including Pneumonia, it is terminated by the body’s immune system. Pneumonia is not known only for being infectious, but also for its painful symptoms such as shortness of breath, pain when breathing, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and fever.

HIV and Aids remains one of the most mysterious diseases to cure as it doesn’t kill our body’s cells or do anything directly to harm us. This disease does something different from other viruses--it attacks our body’s immune system, making our body’s defense system weak. It causes other viruses, bacteria, or parasites to attack the body, since the immune system has already been damaged or weakened. This happens until the body has no longer the ability to fight off diseases. In 2018, it is estimated that 777,000 people died from HIV. The cure or vaccine for HIV hasn’t been found because of how the virus hides in our body’s cells.

The Disney Mulan movie, starring popular actors such as Jet Li and Donnie Yen, has just been released and everyone seems to be enjoying the movie, except for the people of Hong Kong. They have been encouraging people all over the world to boycott the movie. To understand why the people

extraction agreement with Taiwan, by transferring the suspects into Taiwan so they could be tried there. But if Hong Kong creates an extradition agreement with Taiwan, that would result in an extradition agreement with China, and the citizens of Hong Kong did not agree with this. China is a communist country and had some controversies

with

Chinese

government

handles

suspects like Chang. Pro-democracy legislator Claudia Mo, mentioned that in China, there is no fair trial, no humane punishment, and that there is no separation of power in China. The people of Hong Kong feel threatened by the extradition bill, because it allows China to have more power in Hong Kong.

BUT ISN’T HONG KONG PART OF CHINA? Hong Kong is a part of China, but it self-governs from China, which means that

Kong

has

their

own

rules.

Hong Kong became a semi-autonomous region when the British invaded Hong Kong in the 1840’s from China and ruled over Hong Kong for 99 years, until 1997, where the British gave Hong Kong back to China, with an agreement that Hong Kong is “one country, two systems”.

This means that Hong Kong is part of China but has its own law, which also includes democratic freedom, such as freedom of speech and equal rights, which made Hong Kong distinct from China. People in China don't have the same freedom, because their government mostly silences people who speak against the nation.

Due to the extradition bill, the “one country, two systems” regulation wouldn’t last forever. According to Vox, Hong Kong is expected to be fully under China’s government in 2047. However, China doesn’t want to wait for the deal to expire. In the 21st Century, where China was under President Xi Jinping, many pro-democracy activists have been arrested, which made China a threat to Hong Kong due to the lack of freedom of speech.

Many protests against China have taken place, such as in 2003, protest for

freedom of speech, 2014, for Chinese

government to not take part in Hong Kong elections, and 2019 which is the extradition bill. During these protests, many brawls and fights occurred with the Hong Kong police, to the extent of several protestors’ death while protesting. On one occasion a Hong Kong police shot a protest that was attacking him, with a real gun.

When the movie, Mulan,

was

released,

played Hua Mulan, mentioned, “I support the Hong Kong police, you all can beat me up now,” and added up with, “What a shame for Hong Kong."

This triggered the citizens of Hong Kong, as the Hong Kong police have been accused for brutality to the Hong Kong protestors. Donnie Yen, the actor of Commander Tung in Mulan, posted a video of him playing a video of himself, playing the piano and where he wrote “Today is the celebration day for when Hong Kong returned to motherland China 23 years ago,” and, “I am fighting for the Chinese people which indeed for the longest time, been undermined and disrespected, but worst abused.” This caused a stir in the movie world in Hong Kong where many democratic activists and protestors encourage the people of Hong Kong to boycott Mulan, along with Donnie Yen’s movies such as Star Wars Rogue One and Ip Man, through creating online movements such as #BoycottMulan.

“We knew that we could create a world that exemplified a work we wanted to see. We knew that we had something to give.” - Chadwick Boseman

Tragic news broke out leaving fans stunned as the famous US actor, Chadwick Boseman, best known for playing, “Black Panther,” died from colon cancer at the age of 43. He died at his home in Los Angeles with his wife and family by his side.

According to his family’s statement on Instagram, “It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman." Chadwick was diagnosed with stage lll colon cancer in 2016 and battled with it these last 4 years as it progressed to stage lV. He was a true fighter as he persevered through it all and bought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From “Marshall” to “Da 5 Bloods,” “August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and several more.

All of these movies were filmed during and between countless of his surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring T’Challa to life in Black Panther. He died in his home with his wife and family by his side. The family thanks all of his fans for such love and prayers, and asks that all of us continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time. He was born in Anderson, South Carolina, and graduated from Howard University in the year of 2000. He became an actor for TV shows like, “Lincoln Heights” and “Persons Unknown.” He had his breakthrough from playing, “Robinson” in 2013, “42” the next year, into a colorful wardrobe of R&B superstar, and James Brown from “Get on Up”. He then portrayed Thurgood Marshall as a young lawyer in “Court day," in 2017.

It wasn’t until his big hit playing as Black Panther, having worth more than $1.3 billion and the fourthbiggest movie of all time, that he began rising with top fame. It was the first superhero movie nominated by the Academy Awards in the category for best pictures. He then acted in two more popular movies as King T’challa in 2018 which were, “Avenger: Infinity War,” and “Avenger: Endgame.”

At the 2019 Screen Action Guild Award, “Black Panther” won best ensemble. Boseman stood before the auditorium full of actors and proceeded to quote Nina Simone: “To be young, gifted and black.”

Many other actors and celebrities were devastated to hear the breaking news. In fact, Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel studios claims Boseman to be, “Our T’Challa, our black Panther, and a dear friend.

He embodied a lot of amazing people in his work.

Nobody was better at bringing great men to life. He was smart, kind, and powerful and strong as any other person he portrayed. Now he takes his place alongside them as an icon for the ages.”

His final role in Netflix was the upcoming, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” where he played as a trumpeter, alongside Viola Davis who portrayed a 1920 jazz blues singer.

Tragic History of the ‘Glee Cast’:

Curse or Coincidence?

BY CHARLENE As news outlets cover more articles about the tragic deaths from the cast of the TV show “Glee,” audiences start to wonder if there is a “Glee curse” going around. “Glee” is an American musical comedy-drama, which started back in 2009 and ended in 2015.

What audiences and certain fans call the “Glee curse phenomenon” started when Cory

Monteith,

mixture

of

alcohol and heroin. This forced Glee to suspend one of their characters from the show.

Lake Piru, California. Her death was discovered to be an accidental drowning since there was no sign of suicide or foul play. Many believed that she managed to push her son back onto the boat but unfortunately, did not have enough energy to pull herself back up.

For instance, the assistant director, Jim Fuller, died of heart failure 3 months after Monteith’s death, while the production assistant, Nancy Motes, was found dead in a hotel room in 2014 because of a drug overdose.

On social media, fans around the world started calling it the “Glee curse” after the casts and crew members started dying tragic deaths. Meanwhile, other fans fought back, saying that the show should not be called a “curse” and that the casts should be appreciated for the work they've put into the film. The phenomenon now leaves fans on social media wondering, is this a curse or just a coincidence?
