COVID-19: What a Global Pandemic can Teach You
what's
Good
Kireyna Aurelia Santoso
whats happening 2020 began with unexpected events that can be labeled as “tragedies. Some people deem it a tragedy of the universe, as an array of unfortunate events unfolded before humanity. Starting from increasing tensions between the United States and Iran, forest fires in Australia, volcanic eruptions in the Philippines, the deaths of Kobe Bryant and his daughter in a helicopter crash, an earthquake in Turkey, flooding in Jakarta, the worst locust swarm in East Africa, and the corona virus - a global epidemic. Media coverage of this issue often reports panic-inducing content for the sake of clickbait; the kind of content that makes money. In Indonesia, news on COVID-19 tends to contain headlines that highlight panic-buying in shopping centers, berate the government as the sole party that bears fault, and distort facts through mere fictional narratives. Due to such media saturation, we are dragged to a negative sphere of thought: thoughts dominated with pessimism, negativity, and gloom.
1
Undeniably, the virus does cause adverse effects on people's health, the global and the local economy, and our social lives. But, let us examine them from the lens of a realist, not a pessimist. 1. Economically, Bloomberg projects that this virus can burden the global economy at a cost of 2.7 trillion USD or equivalent to about Rp. 40,000,000,000,000,000.00. On a local scale, the Deputy Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia, Suahasil Nazara, said that Indonesia's economic growth is projected to be impeded by 0.3%. 2. Socially, we are all encouraged to practice physical distancing, as an effort to avoid spreading the virus. We have to abstain ourselves from going to the mall and public areas, attending events and social gatherings. Schools and offices are closed; most of the time, this hampers productivity to a certain extent. 3. In terms of health, the effects are obvious. Numbers of infectious dissemination increase exponentially, but China has proved evident that it can be addressed gradually. 4. In a socio-cultural context, physical, emotional, and verbal bullying are common against Asians in 33 countries. In my opinion, this Xenophobia is more dangerous than the corona virus itself, as it is a direct reflection of humans’ hatred. Looking at these, we can conclude that the situation is indeed - grim. However, I believe that in a situation as such, a positive mindset can sustain us in hardship. A slingshot must be pulled back before it can glide forward. A lotus flower can only bloom amidst the mud. Come to think of it, don’t they reflect the phenomena of life? Most of the times, if not all the time, hardships fruit an affirmative aftermath. We can dissect a deeper meaning behind adversities, even when such an adversity imposes a global challenge. Below are some lessons that individuals and communities can learn thanks to the global outbreak:
Humanity: Some volunteers - contributors of time, energy and sweat in the construction of the Vulcan Mountain Hospital in Wuhan, who initially refused to receive government wages; donors who give mask donations without expecting to gain a mutual benefit; medical workers who work hard every day, away from their families to help patients; the elderly who come to police stations in China and donate all of their life savings without leaving a name. If this doesn’t remind you of the beauty of humanity, then I question you.

2
Crisis management: Crisis management is a vital scheme that ought to be practiced by various parties: individuals like you and me, organizations, and the government. With a global pandemic, the world's population is challenged to find solutions in a short period of time. This trains us to prepare responses more effectively and coordinate systems with more efficient communication, should there be further challenges ahead in this uncertain world.
International Aids: As many as 21 countries, including Indonesia, donated epidemic prevention and control assistance to China earlier this year. Now, as the situation in China has improved, they have reached out to countries in Southeast Asia and Italy, sending medical personnel and supplies. Furthermore, the United Kingdom plans to donate 150 million Euros from their budget to reduce the impact of the corona virus in economically vulnerable countries, without any deals of reciprocation..

Maximizing the Potential of Technology: Because the majority has transitioned to home-learning and work from home, many lessons, discussions and productive work are carried out in a technology-based fashion. Students, teachers, and employees all use available technology. Not only are we encouraged to explore what we wouldn’t have explored otherwise, we are exposed to the efficiency of technology and its potential.
Decline of Excessive Non-essential Consumerism: Realizing that the situation can worsen any time, people's intuition is anticipatory such that we prioritize buying staple goods, ranging from rice stocks, food seasonings, and groceries. People are taking a step backwards to realize their necessities; such that excessive consumerism has subsided. Realizing essentials help us control our impulse and greed of shopping, although the extent may vary for different individuals.
3
Reductions in Carbon Footprints: Thanks to social distancing, lockdowns, and restrictions from public places, the rate of pollution has reduced significantly. Readings from ESA’s Sentinel-5P satellite has shown that over the last 2 months, levels of nitrogen dioxide over cities and industrial clusters in Asia and Europe were markedly lower than in 2019. Mother nature has finally gotten the rest it deserves.
Quality Time with The Fam: Now that we’re spending our days 24/7 with our families, we can spend more quality time with them. Movie nights, Monopoly games, family dinners, you name it! A rare opportunity for families to bond.
Embracing the Fragility of Life: The presence of a global pandemic has taught us that life is short, volatile, and valuable. So, as long as we have the breath of life, it is only appropriate for us to give thanks and be determined to be a better person.
Realization of those we Take for Granted: I find truth in the song lyrics of Passenger: “Well you only need the light when it's burning low Only miss the sun when it starts to snow Only know you've been high when you're feeling low Only hate the road when you're missing home”
Sometimes we have to lose things before we can truly appreciate them. Amidst this period of quarantine, have you ever reflected on what you should have enjoyed or done before being constrained in your homes? Whether it be eating in your favorite sushi restaurant, hanging out with your friends, visits to your grandparents’ house, or learning in a physical classroom, now you know what not to take for granted ever again.

E-SPORTS TAKEOVER By Ali Sumono
Source: nba.com
With the pandemic causing disruption to various aspects of life, many sports face postponements or even cancellation, due to mass gatherings being discouraged both indoors and outdoors as well as many people either contracting the disease or self-isolating from it. Thankfully, with sports being put at a halt across many sport leagues, many are finding entertainment in another industry: e-sports.
All e-sports titles, like "League of Legends" and "Call of Duty," are gaining popularity. With the internet being the industry’s main advantage, its able to hold these events virtually, many major tournaments have embraced an online-only format. Countless people are watching gamers play live through outlets like Twitch, Mixer, Youtube, and many more.
Many professional sport leagues have shifted to video games to keep the sports alive, with examples such as NBA hosting an NBA 2K tournament. In the football world, La Liga also launched a FIFA 20 e-sports tournament with the hopes of raising money that will be donated to various Coronavirus charities. Formula one also announced that they are launching a simulation racing series with the virtual race having a number of current F1 drivers compete against each other and also actual e-sport drivers on the F1 2019 game. But it's not only virtual versions of traditional sports that have come to the forefront.
Even if you’re not in the hype train of esports, you can find certain replays of your favourite sport moments online. It’s glorious to hear animated commentators covering live video game battles, even if you have no idea what’s going on. If you do get a taste for it, you soon realize just how much strategy and preparation is at play. Sure, it's pixels on the screen and not real people, but the main ingredients of sport are mostly there.

WHAT'S HAPPENING?
A 4KM ASTEROID FLED PAST THE EARTH EARLIER IN APRIL
Written by Dhira Videa Last month, NASA detected a potentially dangerous asteroid, identified as 2020 FZ6, approaching our Earth. It was reported to fly past us on Tuesday, 14 April 2020 11.59 EDT. According to NASA’s Center for NearEarth Object Studies, the rock was approximately 620 feet in diameter
WHEN SEEN WITH THE NAKED EYE
and raced across the milky way at a remarkable speed of almost 49,000 miles per hour, making it large enough to be hazardous if it were to ever collide against Earth. “All asteroids with a minimum orbit intersection distance of 0.05 astronomical units or less and an absolute magnitude of 22 or less are considered potentially dangerous” NASA explained, addressing this 'hazard.' Fortunately for us, the rock didn’t come close. It kept a safe distance of 4.8 million miles away from our planet. However, a report claims that if its trajectory were to be changed even the slightest, the rock could’ve bumped Earth and caused a “blast” violent enough to “wipe out an entire major city.” We’re lucky that didn’t happen! According to an orbit diagram by NASA, 2020 FZ6 is an Apollo with a natural orbit that just happened to intersect Earth’s. Soon, 2020 FZ6 is expected to cross the trajectories of Mars and Jupiter too. Nevertheless, what’s great about this flyby is that this has allowed for scientists to study the space rock and its features. Let’s take a look!

WHATS HAPPENING
How has the coronavirus pandemic politically and economically impacted the world currently? By Eginhard I.H. Jauwena
Globally, everyone knows that with human activities being put to a halt in order to contain the coronavirus, it has affected world economics for the worse. These are the briefly explained, specific details of what will and has happened to the world economy due to the pandemic:
Pandemics and epidemics are nothing new to human beings. In the 14th century, the Black Death swept across mainland Europe and the British Isles, wiping out an estimated 75-200 million of the population. In the 20th century, the “Spanish flu” or the 1918 flu epidemic infected nearly 500 million people; approximately a quarter of the world’s population at the time. The current coronavirus pandemic has infected almost 1.8 million of the world’s population as of April 2020. Although the coronavirus pandemic will not be one of the world’s worst pandemics on its impact on human mortality (considering that it has a 2% chance of mortality), it however will have a big potential negative impact on the politics and economics of the modern world. Here are some briefly explained major potential impacts that coronavirus might cause in the modern world today.
Firstly, the global stock market has taken a crash. A stock market, to put simply, is a place where companies sell their ownership or shares of the company. Stock markets can benefit a company, as other corporations can invest in the company, in order for the company to gain profit (Jones, Lora, et al.). Since the pandemic started, stock markets have been plummeting. This graph by Bloomberg shows the severity of the situation:
In the United States, the coronavirus pandemic will affect the current presidential election. During Obama’s presidency, he created a unit in the National Security Council to combat future pandemics and epidemics, after the ebola epidemic had struck Western Africa. However, that unit was disbanded by the current president Donald Trump in 2018. As the coronavirus has been declared a pandemic, this might cause Trump’s voting count to go lower. In China, the president Xi Jinping could experience a threat to his popularity and legitimacy. With nearly half of the provinces and major cities in China under lockdown and around 1.4 billion of the population facing some type of restriction from the government, Xi Jinping’s leadership could be questioned by the people. In addition to the global and local economic recession, Xi Jinping’s leadership might be threatened politically (Rachman, Gideon).
With less activity in the stock market, the decline in economic growth might be too steep for the people and the government to handle, and thus can lead into another economic crash. Alongside the stock market, the world’s industrial productions and sales are also slowing down. Such an example comes from China, where its car sales have dropped significantly by -86%:

Almost every airline in the world has stopped its services since, and no passengers are flying due to airports being closed. This has caused a heavy financial impact on aviation and tourism, which can stunt economic growth for countries reliant on tourism. This graph shown by the BBC shows how drastic the frequency of flights became after the pandemic had started, from more than 150,000 flights to less than 100,000 flights in a month (Jones, Lora, et al.):
Thirdly, unemployment of workers have skyrocketed. As businesses are told to stop their activities and close down, many people have lost their jobs and struggle to find new ones, as few businesses can employ them. This graph shown by the US Bureau of Labor, shows the huge jump of unemployment from March to April, with records of unemployment being less than a million turning to nearly seven million in a month (Jones, Lora, et al.). From one of the Indonesian airline leaders, it says that the airline expects a “decline in revenue, that will impact our profitability; we are expecting a big loss this quarter of the month.” Overall, countries are expected to have less GDP (gross domestic product) due to the pandemic and the lockdown going on. GDP is a measure of the financial value of all final products in a certain country. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), predicted that the GDP of countries will be significantly reduced for 2020, even for those in developed areas.
Fourthly, the world’s tourism and travelling have also been affected. Nearly more than 100 countries have imposed travel restrictions to contain the spread of the virus (shown in red), (Jones, Lora, et al.):

OUTBREAK UPDATE ! BY CHRISTINE THERESIA
OVERVIEW The Coronavirus, also known as novel Covid19, has infected more than 1.5 milllon people globally. It attacks the lungs, causing victims to experience breathing difficulty. This virus is an outbreak that has been labelled a pandemic, and is altering the lives of arguably everyone.
In an effort to “flatten the curve, the world is shutting down. Borders and businesses are temporarily closing; many things are adjusted to online; and people are confined in their respective homes. Consequently, amidst the pandemic, the earth is gradually healing due to the global economic slowdown.
GLOBAL SHORTAGE Hospitals are in dire need of medical supplies for what seems like a never-ending influx of Covid19 patients. Health workers all over the world are working around the clock; many without proper protection against the highly contagious virus. Not to mention, as the virus attacks the respiratory system, hospitals are also lacking ventilators to accommodate the large number of patients.
While unemployment rates spike and stock markets crash, pollution levels have drastically decreased and nature is making its comeback.
13
Hence, many individuals and organizations have also been supporting the production of such supplies through donations, innovation, or the revamping of factories. Among the latest donations, Jack Dorsey, owner of Twitter, has pledged $1 billion to support relief efforts for Covid-19.
