Java Jazz - A Concert Review

BY PRISMOSPICKLES Daniel Caesar at 2018 Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival Location: JIExpo Kemayoran Date: Sat, 3 March 2018 This year's annual Java Jazz’s lineup featured 22-year-old Canadian R&B and soul singer-songwriter, Daniel Caesar. You may have heard about him from some of his more popular songs like: "Japanese Denim", "Best Part", or "Get You". With lyrics like "if life was a movie, then you're the best part,” and a long-lasted soothing “oooh”, followed by "who would've thought I'd get you", the concert was filled with couples abound--left and right.

To get into the concert, you must pay for a daily pass, which was last valued at 875k. If you want to watch special shows (like Daniel Caesar), you have to pay an extra 150k.

The earlier you get the tickets, the cheaper they are. You can get them online or on the spot. Print them at home. We didn't know hardcopies of the tickets were required, so we paid an extra fee for printing at 10k per page in one of the booths they had.

The concert was short; Caesar played something about 6 songs or so. He started the show with "Best Part" and ended with "Get You", which was perhaps my favorite part of the show. All throughout the event, the atmosphere felt romantically mellow, or for those who were single: mellow but lonely and desirably romantic. If you didn't get into the venue earlier, it's unlikely that you'll be able to fight your way through the sea of concertgoers and get to the front rows, but fret not for you can see Caesar's reassuring face on two big screens beside the stage.

The screens would also show some of the fans in the crowd and we actually spotted a couple of SPHSC students. Caesar gave his acknowledgements to his band mates and saged the stage. You could say that Indonesia was a special show for him and his fans since it was his first ever show in Asia.

The concert was overall very chill. One thing I noticed is that if you don't remember most of the lyrics to an artist's songs, concerts become less fun. A lot of Caesar's songs also sound fundamentally similar, so it doesn't get too lit. The remaining components of Java Jazz was fairly decent. Although the organizers could have done a better job in showcasing the correct song title on the screen. And the purchasing system within venue was complicated (you can't purchase with bills; you have to exchange real money for some coins or something like that). We couldn't get drinks because of that and because the lines were so long. There were also some artistic installations in the venue, such as a pool of rocks with rainbow strings around it.

We didn't get to go through it because it was so crowded. If I could describe the whole experience in a few words, it would be: mellow, short, and thirsty. Granted we didn't experience the whole Java Jazz festival, so my words cannot be held accountable as an entirely valid review of the whole of Java Jazz.

Another featured artist that I wanted to see was JhenĂŠ Aiko, but her show was on Sunday and I couldn't go because ya know, that IB lyfe.Â

XX - A Concert Review

BY PRISMOSPICKLES The xx Location: JIExpo Kemayoran Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2018 Indie pop band from Wandsworth, London, The xx’s long-awaited concert debut in Indonesia was an experience satisfactory to any concertgoer. The concert lasted for about 2 hours, with about an hour or so of the opening act, Elephant Kind (an Indonesian pop band). Elephant Kind was good, but I didn’t know any of their songs, so I couldn’t get lit with it. The actual performance by The xx started a little later than expected, but I had no problems with it. Delays are bound to happen in concerts—or any type of event at that matter.

The xx’s performance really shone through that night—with Romy’s angelic whispery voice, Oliver’s somehow blasé and yet emotional voice, along with Jamie’s mad melancholic DJ sounds. It was a sight!

Especially with the setup and the lights and the colors and the smoke.

The venue was separated into 3 sections: GA Section 2, GA Section 1, and VIP. It was dark all from the beginning to the end. Getting in was hassle-free and quick. You just had to figure out where the entry was. The queue for on-the-spot tickets was surprisingly long.

The queue for the bathroom was also very long; mostly the ladies’ bathroom. They had food and drinks prepared in small booths inside the concert hall. It was a wellorganized event. The xx is known for their minimalist and fragile style, with their iconic echoing bouncy guitar sounds. This is exactly what you hear live. Simply put, they sounded great! Some of the songs they played, like “I Dare You”, were altered for the performance. They performed a more lullaby-like version of “I Dare You” instead of the usual faster-paced, Twin Peaks-esque vibes you can hear in the recorded version.

The best part of the show was their performance of “On Hold”. The recorded version of this song is already amazing on its own: very energetic and whimsical, but live… live, it was just… spectacular!

When you listen to the song, you feel like getting up to dance, but live, it’s as if the beats are waiting to burst inside of you. Dancing and jumping became such a natural thing. Jamie also put a twist on the song with a beat-drop solo which meant for a longer dancing opportunity. I listened to the song after the concert and it didn’t feel the same. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a very solid song, but live, it was a phenomenal song! It gave off an inspiringly remarkable energy despite the actual message behind the song, which is actually kind of sad. It’s like: hey, im not fine, but imma still be lit about it. They also played many of their older songs, (which were actually more popular too), since they didn’t visit Indonesia when they originally debuted. Throwbacks like “VCR”, “Islands, “Angels”, and many more were played. They also apologized for not having performed sooner in Indonesia and said so many more heart-felt messages. Words to describe the experience: wondrous, phenomenal, all the synonyms of the word “amazing” the thesaurus has to offer! To think that I didn't feel like going much since it was a school night… I’m so glad I went!

Movie Reviews: From the Black Panther to Dilan

The Greatest Showman A heartfelt musical with an old-fashioned setting, wonderfully forged, and pleasing to watch. ‘The Greatest Showman’ features a man named PT. Barnum, a visionary entertainer with an endless imagination. Together with his loved one, Charity Hallet, the enthralling world of PT. Barnum comes into building. Barnum begins his journey with absolutely nothing. A man who couldn’t even afford a bed for his wife, ascended into a worldwide, famous, entrepreneur. He changed the very essence of the entertainment industry and transformed it into something totally new.

With a number of captivating musicals, ‘The Greatest Showman’ presents itself as a magical, well-made movie, with little shortcomings.

Black Panther

“Don’t friz (freeze). I nevah friz (never freeze).”

Prince T’Challa, son of King T’Chakka, has just been crowned king, due to his father’s tragic death. Still unprepared, young T’Challa has no choice but to accept his responsibilities as the new king of Wakanda, and as the new Black Panther. Prince T’Challa finds himself deep within the internal conflicts of his country, discovering that they were all rooting back to the generation of his dead father. A splendid movie with amazing visuals and captivating action.

The Marvel movie ‘Black Panther,’ could not have been made any better. Still containing a little bit of humor, this superhero movie is filled with gripping and dramatic battles. It is for sure, one of the finest Marvel movie ever produced.

WAKANDA FOREVER!

Dilan (1990) Produced based on its novel, Dilan 1990 has been on the spotlight for quite some time now. Unlike the majority of Indonesian movies that haven’t really had any significant impact on the Indonesian community, this romantic, comedy, high school movie, has people leaving the cinema with smiles on their faces. ‘Dilan 1990’ brings back the sensation of the past, in which high school drama (in Bandung) still strongly exist, and romantic relationships start to build. Played by a talented cast, this heartwarming film has not failed to please its audience.

Note: A little bit cringy, though that is what creates the humor of the movie…

Maze Runner: Death Cure The third and last movie of the Maze Runner series, ‘Maze Runner: Death Cure.’

Based on a best-selling novel, this adventure-action-thriller movie, will leave you speechless at the end of the movie. After the traumatic maze trial that Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) had gone through, he leads his other escaped Gladers on their final mission. To save his captured friends, he would break it into WICKED’s deadliest city, and break them all out. ‘The Maze Runner: Death Cure’ is a solid, breathtaking, movie, with emotional complexities that will leave you weeping at several parts of the film. With a diverse cast, astounding cinematic action, and a twist at its plot, ‘The Maze Runner: Death Cure’ will not fail against your high expectations.

12 Strong Starring Chris Hemsworth, ’12 Strong’ presents a solid, war-action movie, which continuously engages with the audience. Facing a war with no end, Captain Mitch Nelson, sends his troops to Afghanistan for a dangerous mission. There, they find themselves overwhelmed by the merciless enemy who does not take any hostage. With an intensity unlike any other movie and an inspirational ending that gives a message of courage and bravery, ’12 Strong’ is definitely a recommended movie to watch. Though people like to underestimate the movie for its plot’s simplicity, the nonfictional film delivers the story brilliantly, leaving the audience with no breath to spare.

Ujian National-Big Deal?

BY KIREYNA AURELIA SANTOSO Every year, the 6th, 9th and 12th graders of Indonesia have to face an unquestionably unwanted challenge - or, for some, a troublesome ordeal. That, is none other than Ujian Nasional, a compulsory national exam for Indonesian scholars.

It has lately become a contradictory debate topic - is it really a big deal? Is the National Examination important for us after all?

Even though our international school does not completely require the students to join UN, the format and the system of the exam itself is an idealistic and exceptionally great concept. The exam is one of the many ways that the government uses to improve the quality of education in Indonesia.

Maybe you all disagree with this, but surely there are benefits of UN that would bring advantages not only for us but also for the country’s students as a whole.

The age old question: Is it worth it or a waste of time?

The purpose for the implementation of national exams is to set up a national standardisation.

It is important to note that Ujian Nasional: 1. Can be used by the educational policy makers to detect weaknesses in education and their qualities.

2. Is a tool to make changes in education 3. Provides accountable exam results to motivate teachers and learners to do better.

4. The basic selection of the next level of education within the country Now you might still question yourselves.

“Sure. UN has many benefits. But what are the benefits for us, those in an international school? Don’t we have too much to deal with already?”

The answer to that is that, firstly, UN serves as a standardisation measurement in testing the Indonesians students in international schools who are participating to achieve standards of our own in the eyes of the national education system.

Not only that, but our country’s Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemdikbud) requires schools who are part of the Cooperative Education Unit (Satuan Pendidikan Kerja Sama or the SPK) to follow the National Examination.

Kemdikbud stated that they have socialised the obligation to follow the National Exam on SPK. “The response is positive, they will follow three compulsory subjects; namely Bahasa Indonesia, English and Mathematics. The rest depends on the students, because their curriculum is different from the national curriculum”, explained the Head of Education Assessment Centre (Pusat Penilaian Pendidikan).

The SPK or the Cooperative Education Unit are the schools that apply international curriculums using foreign languages in the classroom. Previously, SPK students participated in the UN in other schools. But since 2016, they are to follow the UN in their own schools.

Aside from the reasons above, one of the main reasons to still take UN is to ensure a possible admission to a good university (or the next level of education), should any of you be interested to pursue education in Indonesia.

There are consequences that arise if the National Examination is not conducted, Ebel (1980) mentions several consequences that arise if the national exam in both national and international schools is not done, namely: - Encouragement and appreciation for one's attempts to learn will become more difficult.

- The success of a less educational program can be expressed as a goal and achievement less provable.

- Important decisions concerning curriculum issues and methods are not taken on strong evidence but rather based on estimates.

- The opportunity to pursue education is not based on talent and achievement but more based on heredity and influence.

- Social class barriers are less impenetrable.

For all the considerations above, think once more and draw your own conclusions. The goal and purpose of our education in Indonesia itself is to actualise the learning atmosphere and the learning process so that learners actively develop their potential to have spiritual strength, self-control, intelligence, a good personality and character, and skills to grow needed for themselves, for the society, nation, and state as a whole.

JAKARTA'S 2018 WOMEN'S MARCH BY: SHERRI MAKHIJANI On the third of March, only a few days before International Women’s Day, hundreds of people flooded the streets of Central Jakarta as part of Jakarta’s 2018 Women’s March.

The second of its kind, this year’s March focused on global matters regarding women’s rights such as sexual assault alongside current issues in Indonesia, including violence against domestic workers, discrimination against minority groups, and the controversial RKUHP. The slogan for this year’s March was #LawanBersama, which, according to the committee, was chosen because of “the multitude of issues that threaten the safety and comfort of women in Indonesia,” and the need for collaboration in the resistance against aforementioned issues. Its logo consisted of two main colors: purple as a symbol of dedication and determination to fighting sexual harassment, and tosca, as a symbol of peace and hope from violence in honor of survivors.

Beginning at the Sari Pan Pacific hotel in Thamrin, the march ended at Taman Aspirasi in Central Jakarta, where musical performances alongside poem recitations and dances were held.

Jakarta’s Women’s March is to be followed by similar events in other Indonesian cities, including Bandung, Bali, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, and more.

GRADE 11 FIELD TRIP: LAST BUT NOT LEAST GROUP 3 AND 4 DP SUBJECTS FUN BY: SAMUEL YAKOBUS

It was the last field tried the 11th graders would be part of as SPH students. This year’s trip took place on Monday, 26 February 2018 until Thursday, 1 March 2018.

Destination? Bodogol, approximately a one hour drive from the campus. Not only was the destination new, the itinerary was focused on research for group 4 DP subjects, which are the sciences, a pioneering stage for future research, it was an adventurous feat for many students.

Students also served the local community by popping up a flea market and donated the revenue to the local school.

Prior to the trip, Ibu Alissa, the DP coordinator, briefed the 11th graders about the group 4 DP subject project's nature as it is a requirement of the Diploma Programme.

The primary inquiry is about the health of the environment. Ibu Alissa informed the students that the MNC group would be building a theme park soon, and students were to conduct field research to find out if the theme park would cause any change to the environment.

This would be an ongoing annual project, and next year’s juniors would be doing a similar project to eventually accumulate data to find a relationship. There are seven groups of students comprising of the Group 4 subjects: Biology, Environmental and Societies Studies, Chemistry, and Physics which allows for collaboration among the students from the different groups.

Group 3 DP subjects: Business and Management, and Psychology have their own project as well. This takes shape in the form of a second hand item market where theories learned were put into practice. This activity is a part of the grading component of the subjects. On Day One, the group gathered at school to depart by 8:00 AM in one single bus. Teachers estimated that the trip would take one and a half hours; however, it only took 40 minutes to reach Kinasih Resort, the hotel where they stayed. People then started to unpack and check-in to their own assigned rooms.

The next session was a meeting with the mentors for each of the groups; these are Biology students from Universitas Indonesia that would assist in the collection of data. Each group then checked their equiptments and got to know more about their mentors. After this session, everybody had lunch and got ready for the first data collection.

Everybody departed in a convoy of off-road vehicles to Sungapan River, approximately a 20 minute drive from the hotel. Sungapan River is located in a village that plants rice. Students got out from the vehicle and prepared their own equiptments to gather data. Some examples of the data collection include biodiversity index for Biology, water Ph level of the river for Chemistry, river sedimentation for Physics, and the social condition of people for ESS. The river was quite dirty as there was a waste pipe directed to the river. It took approximately an hour before it started to rain and everybody went back to the hotel. Back at the hotel, there was free time to shower and clean up. After dinner, some students were setting traps for insects at the hotel while other students prepared items for SPH night.

On Day Two, at 8:00 AM students headed to Bodogol Forest which coincidentally passed the land owned by MNC Group. The road to the forest was unpaved halfway up; fortunately, the off-road vehicles were able to cope with the rugged terrain. It was a fun experience, the vibration and thrill gave an exciting start to the day. After a short briefing at the base camp, students gathered to their group 4 project groups with their mentors. Then, the groups trekked the forest; some went to the waterfall, while other went to the forest to see the canopy.

Students also did some data collection in these sites.

As for myself, I went down a stream to collect sediments. It was not the original path, but I decided to collect data there. The water was very clean and clear, a very rare sight in Indonesia. The trek was very challenging, with very steep slopes, leeches, thorns, slippery steps, and humid weather. Some students did not even realize that leeches were sticking onto them and sucking their blood. However, everybody survived this arduous trek. By noon, everybody was having lunch at the base camp, waiting for two groups that had not return because their data collection needed more time. At 3:00 PM everybody finished their data collection and headed back. The rest of the evening was spent preparing for SPH night and recovering from the trek.

Day three started with a visit to the Cisalopa River, approximately a 15 minutes drive from Kinasih. There, students carried out data collection in their respective classes. The river was not necessarily clean, with trash visibly flowing. However, the courageous students still continued. All data collection took approximately an hour, and everybody was tired. The next destination was Bodogol Village, and the group got on the outdoor vehicles and unpacked. It was now time for the group 3 project of selling second hand items. There were four teams that had collected second hand items to sell, primarily clothing, and other things such as toys and children books.

All the items were brought with the cars while students were conducting data collection. Then, the groups spread out to the assigned spots selected by lot. That was at 10:00 AM, and the teams rushed to prepare selling by lunchtime. However, the teams were very enthusiastic and sold earlier, which proved to help in increasing revenue. It was a competition between the four teams for the Gold Coin Award for most revenue which causes teams to be really motivated to sell all the products. It was a hectic yet fun activity by having the chance to apply Psychology, and Business and Management theories in real life. The selling ended at 3:00 PM, and teams counted their revenue after. The total revenue was approximately 9.7 million IDR, and the school donated it to the local school; they were surprised to the amount of money collected.

The night ended with SPH night, where each group 3 project teams presented their 'piece'. The pieces include a play about the local animal Owa Jawa, a drama about one’s love life, a representation of class life, and a drama about teenage love. Some other awards and recognitions were also mentioned, including the birthdays of Pak Ivan and Mr. Alex. After that, the Gold Coin award was announced and belong to the third group, led by Meshach Adoe of 11.2. In the end, everybody was supposed to celebrate the night with a bonfire; unfortunately, it rained. The snacks were brought inside, and everybody had a fun time.

Students gained insightful knowledge and new experiences from the exposure to activities on this field trip. All this would not be possible without the contribution of teachers: Ibu Yanti Hendar, Pak Ivan Pattiasina, Mr. Alex Pantoja, Ibu Stephanie Sinaga, Pak Todung Aritonang, and Ibu Alissa Gouw. Thank you for organizing this trip, and making this a memorable last field trip!

ON JAKARTA’S FLOODS BY: JONATHAN WIDJAJA Jakarta has been described as a ‘surreal city’ by senior writer Goenawan Mohamad: with all of its modernity, it becomes half-alarming and half-hilarious when we see pictures of grand skyscrapers and Louis Vuitton stores at the mercy of floods. And we are left wondering, how could all the technological and economic development be present in the first place if something as simple as water can so easily turn the capital of the nation into an eversquabbling backwater?

It is not an easy question to answer. Perhaps because of political contestations that see the flooding as campaign leverage alone. Or maybe because of poor city planning that allows buildings to be built with little restrictions in terms of its effects on the environment. We have been building malls without caring for drainage and canal systems which will be more problematic to rebuild today. For instance, incumbent governor Anies R. Baswedan’s naturalization program and previous governor Basuki T. Purnama’s normalization program: channeling water to the ground or the sea will not get rid of the flood cycle, and both programs require significant funding and effective (which there hasn’t been) cooperation with the Bogor government.

What seems to draw us to the flood problem is how the masses are troubled. But often, the urge to help others is false justification to our supposed good-heartedness because we have let building projects that do not have effective water management to continue. Realistically, we are often only attracted to floods because some guy in the government has made a controversial statement about it.

The mechanism that might have encouraged us to seek only for personal satisfaction is the state. The concept that the state may satisfy the needs of all has never been proven correct.

Something that should be impersonal has become personal in the form of the few who accepts bribes and only cares for his pockets to be filled.

Breaking the law or committing a crime has become synonymous with evil, which prevents critical evaluations of policies.Bakunin had written that the state cannot exist without religion because of the desire of men to create perfection in everything they do. Yet without the state, can free men with all their self-centered tendencies, build dams, canals, and demolish buildings that hinder water absorption for the greater good? Can we rely on our good-heartedness to effectively build perfection and to progress further?

Perhaps we have failed to understand the very idea of progress. Throughout history, progress is viewed to come in the form of technology and science. But as Rousseau pointed out, the advancements in technology does not contribute to the progress of morality. The race towards advancement led to, as Rousseau calls it, amour-propre or destructive self-love.

The personal complications of Jakarta’s floods are similar to the climate change debate in general where it has become one filled with overlapping political and ideological agendas. For US liberals, climate change becomes ‘important’ because solving it requires putting to effect some of their own programs, such as more government control over the economy and promoting hostility towards capitalism. Those advocating the dangers of climate change have made those who do not share their views to be put in the same category as Holocaust deniers, denying the opportunity for scientific debates.

This problem of unhealthy association is present among other topics, particularly in work. Against the disgusting work ethics of Industrial Revolution capitalism, Marx argued that people need to feel that their work is meaningful. The climate change debate often overlooks this basic need, with the line where we can determine ambition and social responsibility is blurred. The flooding in Jakarta might, to most, be a distant horror-land which should only be addressed once they have something to lose or benefit.

But to some, that horror-land is real. To them, the ethos that they can make it if they try hard enough will never seem real because they are too busy dealing with the very thing that forces them to spend all their efforts to survive. To thrive is not a concept they are familiar with. And no matter the opinions of those who are less affected, flooding is still worthy to be discussed because of the fundamentally human questions that it asks on social support and responsibility.

John Rawls has explored social responsibility through the ‘veil of ignorance’: if we don’t know where we are going to be born, either in the poorest areas of Africa or the most prosperous regions of Scandinavia, we would want to make sure that every place would provide to our rights, no matter where we’ll end up. The fact that we couldn’t sanely take up the challenge to experience flooding in Jakarta, not even extreme poverty, reminds us of how much we haven’t achieved of a just and fair world.

No matter whether climate change is ‘real’ or not, our responsibility is to try our hardest so that others won’t have to suffer as much as they are now. As Marx, though undoubtedly intending to support his own claims in philosophy, elegantly expounded: we “have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point is to change it.”

SLEUTH Scoop Mystery #1

Try to solve the mystery. Read the clues carefully; everything said down there is true.

A cake was stolen from Bu Lisa’s classroom; the plate that the cake was in was shattered on the floor. There are three suspects: the janitor, the student, and the teacher.

JANITOR: I was walking by the classroom when I saw the broken plate, so I came in to clean it up with a broom. The teacher was in the classroom already. I saw a chocolate smudge on the door handle.

TEACHER: I was passing by to heat up my lunch and I went through Ms. Jeanne’s art class, I did not see the broken glass and I couldn’t have taken the cake because I would not have anywhere to place it in. If I had stolen the cake, I would have taken the plate along with me to my classroom where I ate my lunch.

STUDENT: I came running in from the bathroom to take my bag from Bu Lisa’s class, I had just had her class before lunch and I left my bag in there for a while so I would not have to carry it to the bathroom. Besides, I wouldn’t have been allowed to take the cake in the first place; my mom hates me eating junk food.
