S S P P @ @ H H x x S S D D C C E E 2020 TT Since last year, TEDxYouth@SPH Sentul City has been hosting a Tedx event annually. Consisting of speakers and NGOs from Indonesia, this year our TEDx team hosted a virtual TEDx conference on the 24th of October. I had also gotten a chance to interview one of the committee who took part in conducting the event this year (requested to remain anonymous for the article).

If you haven’t already known, TEDx is a platform that allows speakers to exchange their ideas towards different people. Our TEDx school team is led by 12th graders, Adrian Francis Irawan and Naftalia Johanna in the 2020 running period. With 21 total committees, the TEDx team consists of different departments that are in charge of varying sectors.

This year’s theme on the Tedx is called “Press Play.” It illustrates a starting or “pressing play” of a video, representing how a video enables knowledge to be distributed. With this general theme, the vision of this TEDx team is to encourage the speakers to share their knowledge for the participants to apply to their lives and thus act upon it.

This TEDx team invited remarkable and unique speakers from various backgrounds. One of the speakers include an alumni of SPHSC, Abigail Limuria, who wrote about the female heroes of Indonesia (buku Lalita). Another one of the speakers is Mochtar Sarman, an expert in the merchandising business, who also collaborated with the well-known Indonesian soccer club, Persija. Other than the two mentioned speakers, there were also 4 other speakers with varying careers such as a ballerina, a pianist, and even a film director.

Multiple NGOs (Non-governmental organizations) were also present in the event.

Through this, they were able to present and introduce their vision and mission to the viewers.

Some of these include organizations in our own school such as Sayap Ilmu, Ecolution, The Revitalize Project, and also Aidvantage. One NGO from outside SPHSC include an organization called Woke Human.

According to the interviewee, the preparation for the TEDx event had started in April 2020.

Especially because it was during quarantine, communication amongst each other and towards the speakers was also a setback during the process. However, they managed to persevere through difficult circumstances and brought us an amazing event.

Hopefully, when the next TEDx event happens, we will be able to meet physically and watch the speakers giving out their messages on a real-life stage. Until then, make sure to stay updated with our TEDx team and support them!

Peek the Excitement in BBPB SPHSC’s Workshop

By Eginhard If you haven’t heard already, the Bye Bye Plastic Bags (BBPB) organization in SPH Sentul City recently held a virtual workshop in the month of October. I had recently interviewed Nicole Nathania Budiman, the co-leader of BBPB, to give us a brief overview of the details of BBPB and the workshop itself.

For those who are still new to BBPB, it is a worldwide organization that started in Bali, that strives to put an end to plastic waste. Multiple schools all around Indonesia even have their own BBPB club. As for our school, we joined the BBPB family two years ago in 2019. BBPB SPHSC was Initially established by alumni Aziza Al Halim and Qeza Amarys Wibisono, alongside current grade 11 leaders of BBPB, Kezia Syang Prameswari and Nicole Nathania Budiman.

The virtual workshop itself was one of the ways that BBPB has reached out to the community during quarantine. Because they wanted to start small in the new academic year, they decided to do a workshop that would raise awareness on the topic of sustainability amongst children from kindergarten to Grade 6. The whole planning of the workshop involved multiple departments, which includes media, programs director, public relations, and the documentation team.

BBPB SPHSC’s Workshop The workshop itself was held on the 21st of October, where the participants of the virtual workshop were sent care packages, filled with crafting kits to enhance the experience.

Inside of these care packages were decorations and materials such as wrapping paper, glues, etc.

The virtual workshop first opened with an introduction by two hosts from the BBPB program director team, an icebreaker game, along with a small introduction of what BBPB is. They also invited our kindergarten teacher, Ibu Fany Rundupandang, to lead and guide the children throughout the virtual workshop and the DIY crafting session.

With the care packages, the students were able to make fun DIY creations such as pencil boxes and piggy banks out of used plastic bottles. And according to Nicole, BBPB held the activity itself in the hopes and vision of instilling the children with sustainable living, and also raising awareness of recycling plastic and plastic free habits. In the words of Nicole herself, “Doing it for children would be more beneficial, because we can shape their mindset and habits to adopt a sustainable living."

With that, it concludes the recap on BBPB’s first virtual workshop of the year! Lastly, Nicole has a message for everyone who is reading this, “As someone who is striving for a plastic free sustainable future, I hope that everyone will realize the impact of their lifestyle towards our environment and what that could mean for us in the future. I hope that through this you are more inspired to be more mindful about the plastic that you use, and hopefully, stop using plastic. Because every little action that you make, be it small, be it big, can make a huge difference towards the environment.”

A Powerful Earthquake Hits Turkey By: Charlene

Recently, at 12:04 p.m. ET on October 30, 2020, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Aegean Sea in a location that is only 19 kilometers away from shore. The powerful earthquake claimed 14 lives in both Greece and Turkey. Unfortunately, the two countries were severely affected by the natural disaster.

Authorities state that there were over 114 aftershocks recorded. There were about 1,227 search and rescue teams who were deployed to look for survivors. About 522 people in Turkey’s coastal west were injured, five people having to undergo surgery, and eight put under intensive care. Aside from that, 20 buildings were damaged, in which 17 of them were completely destroyed, and some of the buildings were completely demolished because of the “mini - tsunami” that was triggered by the earthquake.

Because of the “mini - tsunami,” coastal buildings and towns in Turkey were completely flooded or destroyed. Beril Demiralay, a survivor of the natural disaster, was walking along a waterfront in a Turkish seaside city called Sığacık when she claimed to have seen boats crashing into each other in the nearby sea and water flooding the town. In Turkey alone, 12 people have been reported dead.

Meanwhile, Greece has only two reported deaths in Samos, a Greek island. Both of the victims were teenagers: a boy and a girl were killed after a wall collapsed on the two of them as said by the civil protection ministry. A Greek reporter who happened to be nearby the scene described the efforts made to save them. Their bodies were later recovered by the Greek Fire Service after searching the ruble.

The Prime Minister of Greece also called the President of Turkey to offer his condolences and also tweeted, “I just called the President (referring to the President of Turkey) to offer my condolences for the tragic loss of life from the earthquake that struck both our countries. Whatever our differences, these are times when our people need to stand together.” The President of Turkey replied in a tweet to thank the Greek President saying, “Thank you, Mr. Prime Minister. I offer my condolences to all of Greece on behalf of myself and the Turkish people. Turkey, too, is always ready to help Greece heal its wounds. That two neighbors show solidarity in difficult times is more valuable than many things in life.”

As these countries continue to recover, we should continue to keep them in our prayers to make sure they recover from the earthquake well.

Project Athia In this game, players play as a young woman (who is believed to be Athia) in a fantasy world, and explore this unfamiliar world that she is in.

Horizon Forbidden West Life on Earth is on the verge of extinction, yet the reasons are unknown. Aloy must find out why it is happening, whilst also facing a seemingly undefeatable enemy.

Gran Turismo 7 Gran Turismo 7 is a racing game where you can race against other players and improve your strategies in driving and racing through a Driving School!

Returnal Returnal is a game where players get to play as Selene, a character who finds herself in a shapeshifting world and struggles to survive in that dangerous world.

Destruction AllStars Destruction AllStars is a single player vehicular combat game, where players use skills and timing to cause colossal damage on the arena.

Ghostwire: Tokyo 99% of Tokyo’s population has disappeared and has been filled with supernatural forces. It is up to the player to find out the cause of this catastrophe and fight the paranormal threats at the same time.

Godfall Godfall is a third person game where players can hunt for loot, defeat vicious enemies, and find legendary armor sets. It takes place in a fantasy universe, where players face challenging missions.

NBA 2k21 NBA 2K21, the newest version of the NBA 2K series is a basketball simulation where you could also team up with friends to play a game of basketball.

Demon’s Souls In a dark, foggy land there lived a king named Allant. In his quest to gain power, he summoned a demon known as “The Old One.” The mission of the player is to send the demon back to where it belongs.

Hogwarts Legacy Here, players get to experience what it is like to be in Hogwarts during the 1800’s. Players then find out that they’re not just an ordinary student, but have the ability to perform Ancient Magic.

Would those viral police violence videos end police brutality?

By: Seo Youn On May 25, 2020, a recorded video of the police killing of an African-American named George Floyd was posted on social media and went viral globally. During the 8 minute 46 second video, a white police officer knelt on Floyd’s neck while he was pinned to the pavement. This sparked the outrage of people from all over the world.

Why do we record?

Our urgency to record incidents of police brutality with our gadgets may be associated with “online activism”. Allissa Richardson also attributes it to “black witnessing”. She says that recalling the age of slavery in pre-civil war America, AfricanAmericans have historically attempted to record inequalities, and filming these incidents has now become one of the ways to, “connect, historically, dots between atrocities.” Mobile phones are also related to self-protection, leading Black Americans to capture their interactions with the police for their own safety. In fact, for an African-American, every encounter with the police could potentially turn into a life-and-death situation.

Thus can viral videos reduce police brutality?

To answer it straightforwardly, the study has shown that these recorded videos have not resulted in a decline in police shootings or violence. Some possible reasons could be that most of the bystander videos are not even seen by the police or prosecutors in court despite lawyers saying that increasingly more clients are bringing ‘video evidence’ of police brutality. In addition, dashcam footage recorded by police is usually not released to the public.

TikTok stars getting called out by Ariana Grande

Your favorite TikTok stars are yet again involved in another social media feud. These stars have been a hot topic since the content house, “The Hype House” started. But this time, very well-known celebrities are involved.

To start off, we know quarantine has been impacting the world for more than half of the year. And recently, many TikTok stars have been getting called out for throwing parties and not social distancing during the pandemic. Some of these people include Bryce Hall, Thomas Petrou, the D’amelio sisters, Addison Rae, and many more. The reason why paparazzi and people have gone crazy about this is because some of their favorite TikTokers are being called out on social media by other famous celebrities.

On October 30, Ariana Grande was doing an interview about her new album, in which she stated, “Couldn’t we have just stayed at home for a few more weeks?”

She then proceeded saying, “Did we all really need to go to Saddle Ranch that badly, like we couldn’t have waited for the deathly pandemic to pass?” This video is on Zach Sang Show’s YouTube channel and you can listen to Ariana’s comments starting from minute 2.00 - 3.30.

Because of this, a famous TikToker, Bryce Hall, took his time to respond on the “Hollywood Raw podcast with daz Holt and Adam Glyn.” Bryce claimed that, “It’s unnecessary to call out a specific group especially when there are other people doing it. She knew a lot of people would agree because there’s a lot of people that hate Tiktokers especially.”

Ariana’s fans became furious on Twitter as Bryce Hall stated that Ariana shaded Tiktokers as part of a marketing move.

Genshin Impact is an action role-playing game by miHoYo that has a sensational storyline.

The game involves combining and upgrading resources, elemental magic, and completing quests. Similar to the game Animal Crossing, there are many to explore and find on the map, including secret quests and interactive environments. In just over a week after its release, Genshin Impact has been downloaded over 10 million times —its popularity is certainly undeniable.

Unlike the usual Western RPG games that we know of, Genshin Impact is a free-to-play game developed in China that is available in a variety of platforms. Its popularity in the West skyrocketed as it was played by Twitch streamers, Youtubers, and millions of other players.

What makes it unique and intriguing is the interesting in-depth story that lasts more than a few acts. Not to mention, the anime-like characters and game environment are well developed, creating a simple yet elegant game style. the United States and will assume his position as president in January 2021. Many protests erupted as the votes were being counted by each state. It ended with a close win for Joe Biden as he won 306 electoral votes while Donald J. Trump won 232 electoral votes. Yet, many of the Trump supporters are

3.Guns While Joe Biden plans to ban buying and selling guns to the public and end online gun and ammunition sales, Trump plans to encourage teachers to use firearms in school for protection.

4.Education Trump plans to give students the choice if they want to go to school and to reopen schools amidst the pandemic. On the other hand, Joe Biden plans are to increase funds for disabled students in school, provide two years of community college for free, and add more health professionals.

MUSLIM PROTESTS AGAINST PRESIDENT OF FRANCE By: Valencea Regarding the fact that the pandemic is still happening around the world, other conflicts are also happening in this world. This includes the Black Lives Matter movement, false rumors, and the protest against Emmanuel Macron in France.

Recently, many protests were held against Emmanuel Macron, the president of France. These protests were caused supposedly by Macron’s speech in an interview about “Islamic Separatism”, which received many objections from Muslim leaders. This speech was referring to cartoons of the prophet Muhammad that were re-published by Charlie Hebdo, a well known French satirical weekly magazine. Charlie Hebdo also published a cartoon of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was President of Turkey. This has caused an uproar to occur in the Muslim world. Some of the most recent protests happened in the capital cities of Bangladesh, Pakistan, Lebanon, Turkey, and India.

In Bangladesh, police estimated that around 40,000 people were involved.

The reason for this occurrence started when two cities in France, Toulouse and Montpellier, presented the “caricatures” of the Muslim prophet on the walls of buildings. The leader of the protest, Ahmad Abdul Quaiyum, believed that it is wrong to draw Muhammad. This led to protests that happened in Bangladesh. He even called Macron as the “Demon of Paris” or also known as the “leader who worships Satan." This conflict caused many people on social media to change their profile pictures to pictures that write out “respect for Muhammad."

As a matter of fact, Macron told an Al-Jazeera interviewer, “I understand and respect that people can be shocked by these cartoons. But I will never accept that someone can justify the use of physical violence because of these cartoons.” This interview spiced things up on social media.

Many people criticized Macron for choosing Al-Jazeera. Al-Jazeera is a broadcasting station that is known to headline Islamist groups and hardliners, which is illegal in most countries in the Middle East.

In addition, a researcher named Mohammad Reza Vahidzade, said that Macron was being a hypocrite by defending the cartoons, referring to the French leader’s criticism of Brazil’s president in 2019 when he endorsed a comment on social media about Macron’s wife.

As of right now, it seems that there have not been any more updates on these protests. But, it is best to hope they don’t continue as it might just help the world heal a lot sooner.

4 KILLED & 14 WOUNDED in the Traumatizing Vienna Attack

On November 2, 2020, there was a shooting in Vienna, Austria. 4 people were killed and 14 were wounded in the shooting.

Here are the victims of the attack: 1. A 24-year-old German student who worked as a waitress since she was studying in Austria 2. 21-year-old man from North Macedonia 3. 39-year-old man who was eating in a fast food restaurant 4. A 44-year-old Austrian woman.

The shooting occurred for 9 minutes until 1000 police officers arrived and started searching for the shooter until he was terminated. During the attack, people in restaurants, bars, and other locations near the site were evacuated.

People were told to stay indoors for a couple of days after the attack to ensure that no one else was related to the shooter. According to BBC News, the terrorist was a 20-year-old man named Kujtim Fejzulai, who is an Austrian citizen who was identified as an Islamic Terrorist. Many people were arrested and questioned in the scene because of how the shooting occurred in six different locations, which led them to believe that there were more than one shooter. However, after observations, the police found out that the shooter was on the scene alone.

Records stated that the man had already been trying to buy guns and ammunition from other countries to start the attack but had no license to buy it and always returned empty handed.

The shooter was arrested in 2019 because of his attempt in joining a terrorist group in Syria. He was eventually released because of how he mentioned that he doesn’t hold any extremist views anymore. The weapons Fejzulai held during the attack was an ak-47 rifle, a fake bomb in his chest to panic the police and to make them doubtful to terminate him, a machete, and a pistol.

The neighboring country, Germany, also raided homes a couple of days after the attack, to find if anyone was related to the Vienna attacks. However, they did not find anyone linked to this case. Vienna had always been a safe place where people would walk alone at night, but the attack made the citizens more cautious. The French President, Emmanuel Macron, has been discussing with the Chancellor and the President of Austria on how the Islamic attacks in France might be related to the Vienna attack. Presidents and prime ministers from all over the world such as Donald Trump, Vladmir Putin, and Chancellor Angela Merkel have been in on this together to address the problem.

Introducing the 2019-2020 NBA Champions, the Los Angeles Lakers!

The LA Lakers has been favored by many to win it all this season. Lebron and the crew proved them right. Playing 6 games in total against the Miami Heats in the finals, Lakers came out victorious with a 4-2 win. During Game 6, Lakers remained calm under pressure and won 103-96 to claim the championship.

This marks the 17th Championship in the NBA for the Lakers. It will also officially be the 4th championship for finals' MVP, Lebron James. During the finals, Lebron James earned his 11th career finals triple double with 28 points, 10 assists, and 14 rebounds.

His teammates also had an important role in winning the chip. Anthony Davis' statistics were outstanding as well with 19 points, 15 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Rajon Rondo with 19 points and 4 assists, and made 3 out of 4 shots from outside the 3point line. Danny Green had 11 points and 3-7 shooting from the 3 point line. Lastly Kentavious Caldwell Pope with a shooting spree of 17 points. These are the best performances from these players in the finals this year.

For the Lakers, this championship is extra special as it was dedicated to late Lakers legend, Kobe Bryant. Also, the Lakers has had a 7 year playoff drought before this season. So this makes the championship extra special for the whole Lakers-nation.

Now, we can conclude that the Lakers outplayed the heats during the finals this year.

INDONESIA SUCCESS IN CROATIA We all love to hear the good news and the successes of our

country.

successes from Indonesia for you to read about!

For all of the soccer fans out there reading this, all of you must be happy to hear that Indonesia’s Under 19 soccer team flew to Croatia for a friendly tournament. Coming back home to Indonesia on October 26 2020, they have played a total of 11 games in Croatia. Other attending teams of the tournament

were

Croatia

(the

host),

Saudi

Arabia,

North

Macedonia,

Dinamo Zagreb, Bulgaria, Qatar, Bosnia Herzegovina, NK Dugopolje and Hajduk Split. They had a slow first 2 games, losing 3-0 to Belgium and 7-1 to Croatia. But don’t worry, they improved right after that. Game 3 was against Saudi Arabia where they scored a late equalizer to make the final score 3-3.

They won 2-1 and tied 1-1 for game 4 and 5 against Qatar. The

6th game was a close call for the Indonesians as they lost 1-0 to Bosnia Herzegovina.

This

marked

the

last

loss

for

the

Indonesians

during

this

friendly tournament. They bounced back for the 7th match in which they won 1-0 against Dinamo Zagreb. The 8th match was a comfortable win against NK Dugopolje with the scoreline at 3-0. The 9th game was against North

Macedonia,

which

they

won

4-1.

The

10th

game

that

was

also

against North Macedonia, resulted in a tie 0-0. The last game they played was

against

Hajduk

Split

where

they

won

by

a

huge

margin

as

the

scoreboard showed 4-0. Throughout the tournament, they made a total of 19 goals and conceded 17 goals.

They have a total of 3 clean sheets

throughout the whole tournament and ended with 5 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses.
