A Christmas Devotional:
WHEN HEAVEN MEETS EARTH As the holiday season is fast approaching, I realised I need to get myself some new clothes for Christmas. I was online shopping the other day and found myself the perfect outfit for Christmas eve. I could already picture the perfect Christmas party with all my family and friends. Now all I have left to do is to wait for the clothes to be shipped. After 3 days of waiting, my outfit finally arrived. I was so excited to open up the box and try the new outfit. But what I saw in the mirror does not exactly look like the picture I saw on the website. We all set expectations for ourself. For some, it is to do well at school. For others, it is to look the best. However, most of the time, these expectations doesn’t align with our reality. Often times, we stumble and fall. Everything seems to fall apart. We face disappointment and hopelessness. God has set His own expectations for us, His children. He commanded us to love others as ourselves, to read the Bible, to pray, and disciple others. He listed a bunch of laws in the ten commandments for us to follow. But all of us here have probably went against at least one of them. As Christians, we fail to fulfil His commands. Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." We are imperfect beings. We are coated in sins and unholiness. It is impossible for us to live up to God’s perfection. There is a gap between His perfection and our sinfulness. As Christians, we try to close that gap to feel closer to God. Sometimes, we try to lower God standards in order to compromise to the worldly demands. Other times, we use our strength in order to live up to perfection. But the gap will always be there no matter how much we try. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” God is aware of the gap that is separating us from Him and He is fully aware of our limitations. Thus, God does not demand perfection in us. God is not expecting us to measure up to His expectations. Because there was one man who has stood here on Earth thousands of years ago, who is perfect. This man whose name was Jesus was crucified to wash away our debt of sin, resurrected and is alive today. So lay humbly in all your flaws and limitations. Surrender your life in the Lord and Saviour, who loves you unconditionally. For you, who have put your faith in Jesus, have been forgiven and declared righteous. You are precious in his eyes, held in the embrace of His love.

Each homeroom will be assigned a staff department to make or do something in appreciation for the great job they’ve done for our school. On December 19, homerooms will get the last period off of school to do this.

Good Lord, I haven’t had these in such a long time. To end the semester, we’re allowing you to dress chill (according to school rules, of course). You deserve it.

The homeroom-based activities, specifically The Carol Off, Door Decorating, The Trivia, and Cookie Decorating, are part of a single, larger competition. Points will be accumulated, and the homeroom who has the most points by the end of the 12 Days will get a free trip to the movies to be given out at a later time. So join everything you can and help everyone have the most wonderful time of the year!

After returning our “Best Institution” trophy from last year’s achievements to the committee, SPH Sentul won it back in three days. On the 23rd to the 25th of November, seven students from our school went to Binus University in Alam Sutera to participate in three different fields of competitions; speech, newscasting, and story-telling. NEO is a competition held at a national level, where participants come all the way from regions around Indonesia; namely Bandung, Samarinda, and even Borneo. Despite differences in age and educational backgrounds, NEO had become an event where university , high school, and middle school students came together; not as rivals and opponents, but - as cringe-worthy as it sounds - as best mates. Of course, our initial motives to join must have been for either of the following reasons: 1. The aspiration to leave a good imprint on our CVs 2. The temptation to skip school (oops) 3. That 15-minute motivational speech that Ibu Steph, our supervisor, gives, to convince you to go (yes, members of the English Club, you know what I’m talking about!) Although these might be true, we found that the competition had left each of us seven with a much more profound impact.
Gained LOTS of experience; those that gave us exposure to new challenges and those that made us vulnerable, even, for being out of our comfort zones. Had the chance to prove our worth and improve our skills; Competitions like NEO are always a great platform to channel and develop our skills in public speaking, critical thinking, and many more - you name it! Had fun. Though the three hour drives on the road, the preparations, and the nerve-racking performances were not the most pleasant things one could be doing on the weekend, we had had a memorable and enjoyable experience.

LET'S GET PERSONAL... Here are some personal anecdotes from our friends who participated:
STORYTELLING ADRIAN FRANCIS IRAWAN (10.1) “NEO is a competition where people from all over the country come to compete in unique ways. However, how I see it, it’s not just about competing to see who is better, but it is about making friends. That is the perk I love the most about joining NEO. Not only did we support one another, we also take each other’s minds off of the competition. I joined the storytelling competition. I felt like I could be myself when competing since I am a very expressive person who likes to act. In school, usually, I keep the acting and expressing myself to a minimum, but in the competition, I was able to let go of any restrictions and just be myself. This is another good thing about the competition. Some people not only compete to get the trophy, but also to let go of the boundaries people put upon them in order situations.”
DHIRA VIDHEA (11.2) “As teenagers and adolescents, we are at a stage in life where self-exploration is so crucial. Imagine this, in less than a decade time we’d have to decide upon a career path, which might as well end up serving as our lifelong commitment. On top of that, in very little time, we’ll have to select a major in university. There are so many things at this point that call for our commitment, and in time, we’ll have to make a decision. But how can we properly decide when we’re not thoroughly familiar with our options? This is why selfexploration is so crucial. Certainly, there are a million different approaches you can take to explore your competences. Yet, I do believe that competitions like NEO are one of the best ones. From the surface, it may look intimidating, but once you dip your feet in the water, it is really just a friendly challenge. The energy was so positive and people were so encouraging, It personally helped build my courage and motivation to try out new fields, explore potential strengths, and improve myself continuously, especially throughout the event itself.”
NICOLAS AXEL LIKJONO (10.2) “NEO is the greatest experience in my life because not only did we compete with other people that I didn’t know, we made new friends; we shared funny memories with each other, and we never hesitated to help one another. There are hard times, especially the minutes before your name is "As representative all of NEO 2018 Committee we want to say called, where your heart beats faster than before, and your thank you and congratulations to all of you that have body won’t stop fidgeting from head to toe. There were participated in our event. Its been a great experience 1with moments where we felt down because some of us did not all of you during the competition. From this, we would like to make it through to the next round, or we think that we say that all of you have done very well and it is extraordinary made a big mistake when we performed. But, after all that, for us. We hope you all learn a lot, not only in the field that we go back to our laughters where we play, joke, and share you competed in but also in other available conpetition memorable moments with each other. NEWSCASTING JOSEPHINE MADELEINE (11.2) “Newscasting is something new to me and something I don’t see myself in. Despite that, I think what drove me into newscasting is the desire to challenge myself, the curiosity, and of course, the support and encouragement from Ibu Stephanie as the English Club Coach. This led me to gain new knowledge and make unexpected memories. I learned technical knowledge from the judges, like public speaking skills and how I should prevent myself on the television screen. Moreover, I value the friendship made throughout the journey of the competition. The friendly committees and the other newscasters whom I never really considered as rivals, gave me never-ending support throughout the competition.” KIREYNA AURELIA SANTOSO (10.2) “I am the kind of person who is introverted. From a young age, I tend to always avoid competitions and stay in my comfort zone. I still do today. However, I knew that I could not be like this forever. If I remained immune to challenges, I would never be able to improve myself. This school, however, had completely changed my perspective and outlook on my whole life, really. My friends and teachers have become an inspiration - and I often think to myself, “If others can do it, why can’t I?” NEO has taught me that we are stronger than we think we are, that we are able to do things we never thought we would be capable of doing. We just have to set the right mindset and believe so, and work hard to accomplish for best. There were definitely times in the competition when I felt hopeless and that I could have done better. But, in the end of the day, I thought to myself, that it had never been about winning or losing. It’s about the experiences, the people, and developing one’s own sense of achievement. That in itself, was, for me, the most important lesson I got from the experience”
CATHERINE GUSWIDI PUTRI (11.2) “I had always thought of competitions as the typical ‘gutwrenching, neck to neck’ competitive battle that many would vision it to be. Because of this, I had never shown much of an interest towards the idea of competitions itself. But why was this? I mean, I had always joined all sorts of competitions from a very young age. So why was it that I’ve grown distant to joining competitions now? Eager to find out, I decided to go out of my comfort zone and give it a try this year. Joining the first days of the program, I took my opportunity seriously. I distanced myself, so nobody could take this opportunity away from me. Nobody. And yet, life always finds a way to open me up. I started socialising and talking to many people from different backgrounds that share such similar interests. And soon after, I started making friends out of my so-called ‘enemies’. From this experience, the one valuable moral I will forever carry, is the value of opportunity. I have the opportunity to make friends, to gain experiences, to open myself up, and to build myself more as an individual. There lies an opportunity in all things, and it is up to us to seek for that opportunity that lies ahead. Thought it might seem like the most fearsome, unfeasible task you can ever think of, we all still hold the opportunity to prove ourselves capable. You should all give NEO a try!”
SPEECH CHARLIZE FURLANI NURMAWAN (11.1) “NEO is an experience that SPH students really need to consider. What you can see from a community like SPH is that some of the students there are not open to outlooks and new perspectives. Basically, if you only compete in SPH, you will think you’re so good. It’s good to broaden your perspective by joining competitions that give you a good chance to learn and improve.”

Relentless: Worship Festival Relentless Praise and Worship Festival is a student-run event that took place at Sekolah Pelita Harapan, Sentul City on Friday, 7th of December 2018. The theme of the event is ‘Relentless’ as a reference to the Bible verse, 1 Kings 8:23, “There is no God like You in the skies above or on the earth below who relentlessly loves.” The event was opened by a praise and worship session led by the PW team from SPH Sentul City and was followed by a guest performer, Freedom Worship. They successfully brought the hearts of young teenagers into the presence of God through songs of prayer. Although there were about 150 participants present during the event, enthusiasm filled the large gymnasium hall. People were jumping around with the beat of the music in joy of God's name. The event also includes a message brought by a guest speaker, Daniel Chavin. He introduced how God's relentless love is evident as He died in the cross for the sins and debts of mankind. He spoke about God's love that is greater than any other.
Heart of Worship 2 Samuel 6:14, “Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might." This worship event is an opportunity for us to experience God’s never-failing love upon us. Like how David was dancing before the Lord, we celebrate God’s love as the spirit fills our soul. With a heart of worship, we kneel humbly before the Lord as our broken-self, surrendering our life back to the Creator who had made us according to His image for a great purpose. Worship is more than just a song. Worship is more than just performing on the stage and having fun. Worship is all about Jesus. It is coming to God genuinely from the heart. Through this praise and worship event, we are able to delight in Jesus and praise Him for the true things about who He is and what He has accomplished for us.
Fellowship This event also enabled us to build a community in Christ. Psalm 133:1, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” God has called us to build community in His name. In accordance to our school’s yearly theme, “Better Together”, this event allowed us to meet different people that are in different stages in their journey of faith. It allows us to draw one another closer to God. Everyone has something to teach and to learn. The Bible mentioned in Matthew 18:20, the Holy Spirit is present whenever believers gather together. Therefore, by gathering to worship God, we get to grow as better individuals as we share God’s love with one another.

Numerous Instagram accounts have shared posts on their stories, reaching out to people and bringing awareness on the monstrosity of these poachers. Scenes of bleeding rhinos and seals are now viral, and our humanity have linked us all to supporting the same goal; to

If this continues, rhinos will go extinct in approximately 5 years! Instagram has gone viral in promoting organizations like Vetpaw, who are working full time to protect these animals. They’re doing everything they can, which includes tracking down poachers and injecting toxins in rhino’s horns so that it will be deemed invaluable for poachers (it is not harmful for the rhinos itself). Organizations like this need our help and support, as every bit of donation helps.
Though this has been happening for some time, social media has brought us more awareness of current events happening now, and it is BAD. Animals can go extinct in a couple years… all because of us, humans, and our obsession with money. We should all support the end of this murder and do our parts by not contributing in any form of support for them.

Ingredients: - 5 cups water - 5 3-ounce bars milk chocolate, chopped - 1/4 cup plus 1 cup chilled whipping cream - 1 tablespoon powdered sugar - 3 tablespoons prepared caramel sauce
Caramel-Swirl Hot Chocolate Embrace the rainy weather by making yourself a nice cup of warm chocolate.

Bring 5 cups water and chocolate to simmer in medium saucepan, stirring to dissolve chocolate. Mix in 1/4 cup cream. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Bring to simmer, stirring frequently, before continuing.) Whip 1 cup cream and powdered sugar in medium bowl until peaks form. Drizzle caramel over and swirl together, forming streaks (do not overmix).

Divide hot chocolate among 6 mugs. Top with generous amount of caramel whipped cream and serve.

Sinatra’s golden voice, the honest simplicity of the music, and idyllic Christmas settings make for great nostalgia. Or, because I’ve never encountered “tasty pheasants…granny’s pies…countrysides covered with snow” and the lot, a dreamy picture of what life would look like if I was born elsewhere. But though I’m very familiar through books and movies with this Western-style Christmas, I’ve got many other things right here that are awesome nonetheless. What do you get when you cross (arguably) the greatest Hippie musician with the greatest holiday of all time? One word: awesomeness. An anti-Vietnam protest song, the choir of children singing “war is over” in the background as if they were angels makes it an affirming song for us dreamers (but I’m not the only one). Perhaps it’s Lennon’s greatest sing-able-in-groups song: “let’s stop all the fights”, he sings; we dream. The cool retro feel you get from listening to She & Him songs highlights every lyric sung. “From now on our troubles will be miles away…” And so we realize that our problems, whether homework or other responsibilities are really just small things compared to love and joy. This is the first song that comes to mind when I think of the holidays. They say it’s just a little Christmas, but no matter how little, all things can make us merry if we just pay attention.

Home Alone has not only glorious comedy but music as well. One can feel the “gingerbread feeling”, the sentimentality of all the things that make the holidays special for me: “all of the music/ all of the magic...” The orchestration and the little bells tinkling in the background make everything better. And somewhere in our memories, there are many Christmas wonders that make everything better. John Rutter’s rendition brings out the lyrical best of a challenging carol; considering that he’s gone against the likes of Holst and Stravinsky, what a true accomplishment this is. It is a carol of Jesus’ life told in His own voice, and its dance-like feel heightens the mood for celebration, to “call my true love to my dance”. That is, that we may live again with our Lord one day. Do listen to the Farnham Youth Choir’s recording in Christmas Star: A Christmas Festival (the rest of the album is magnificent, too). As the greatest saxophonist of all time, here Coltrane turns a playful and a jovial song into something mysterious and hypnotic. Originally from my favorite musical of all time, the Sound of Music, My Favorite Things didn’t become a Christmas song until the relatively unknown singer Jack Jones included it in one of his albums in 1964. Coltrane’s interpretation mimics an epic poem of an odyssey to a higher consciousness, so meditative and soulful, while Julie Andrews’ original is great, too. Be prepared for an immersing, fleeting experience, as this track goes on for over 13 minutes. Guaraldi and co.’s interpretation of a folk-song-turned-carol is perhaps the best jazz trio set of a traditional song. The piano improvisations are one of the most well-rounded and non-choppy

melodies I’ve ever heard, the drums are perfectly controlled, and the basslines give off such a mellow warmth. Guaraldi was famous for playing tracks to various Charlie Brown shows and movies, in which Greensleeves was so to A Charlie Brown Christmas. Make no mistake: a film, indeed, for children, but music, completely breathtaking, for everyone.

Random guy: some composers can fit in two or three memorable tunes to a piece. Others can four or five. But eight? Surely no one can do that. Tchaikovsky (stroking his glorious beard): hold my vodka. Every note in this work is perfection. Every section takes you somewhere wonderful, each a dream, whether opening presents on an early Christmas morning, or worn-out streetlights in small-town roads, to enchanting palaces, or sleigh rides and winter birds singing, or grand dances fit only with the stuff of fairytales. At least, that’s the picture I get when listening to Tchaikovsky’s greatest ballet. Herbert von Karajan’s recording with the London Philharmonia Orchestra reflects the legendary conductor’s signature euphoric sound. It’s perfect Christmas magic; what more can you want?
