Devotional Reading

What is my calling? Reading: 1 Samuel 3:1-10 What is my calling? What does the Lord want me to do? Am I living the life God wants for me? Am I in the right job? Am I chasing the right path? Am I making the right decisions? These questions often occur in many of us. Once we graduated out of school, we are expected to know what we want to do with our lives. We have the pressure to seek for our calling and purpose. But many feels lost in doubts and uncertainties. We are waiting for God to tell us in the back of our minds what exactly does He want for our life. But sometimes God seems silent. Each of us desire to have a purpose. However, culture has shaped our ideals of it, which leads to the feeling of dissatisfaction. We tend to spend our lives wishing that we were doing something, though it didn’t come from God. We are busy chasing society’s ideals of a calling that is driven by our own pride and ambition. Because of this, God becomes more of a resource than He is a saviour. The Bible wants to set your free from the feeling that you need to find a calling. In fact, the Bible says that you don’t have to find your calling because if you serve the purpose of the season you’re in right now, your calling will find you. God has called you first and foremost to Himself. And through all circumstances you're in, through the seasons of life you've passed, you realise that He was there the whole time, working through you. At age 4, Samuel was submitted to the Lord under the supervision of Eli. When Samuel heard a voice calling him, he ran to Eli. God’s voice sounded like Eli’s that Samuel wasn’t able to recognise Him. Sometimes, God has been talking to us all along but we aren’t listening. With the internet, we have unlimited resource of information that we're unsure which to rely on. We are left uncertain of the truth. God’s words are available for us, but many times we don’t have the right attitude to respond to it. As a result, there is no impact. We feel numb to the word of God. But God called Samuel three times. Even Samuel didn’t get it right the first time. 1 Samuel 3:9 says, “So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” If it was God speaking, he will come back. He’s not playing hide and seek with us. All we have to do is to be in position for it. So humble yourself before Him. We sinful and unworthy, we are incapable and limited. But if it is God calling, whatever the cost, whatever the risks, let us be present and say, "Here I am, Lord".

THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES INDONESIAN POLITICS, POLITICAL INSTITUTIONS, AND FIGURES IN THE BROADEST OF SENSES. THE AUTHOR APOLOGIZES IF THERE IS TO BE FOUND ANY POTENTIALLY MISLEADING INFORMATION. THIS ARTICLE DOES NOT REPRESENT THE VIEWS OF SCOOP.

AN INTRODUCTION TO INDONESIA'S 2019 ELECTIONS By Jonathan Widjaja

It’s another ordinary day in 2019 which means another day of ultra-high raged fights over something of controversy on the Internet. And for this beloved country of ours, this social-media frenzy will be reaching new climaxes next year with the dreaded legislative and presidential elections in April. They call 2019 the Year of Politics. I call it the Year of Getting Mad at Each Other.

With all of this antagonism, it’s not only important to know what different candidates stand for, but, against the overloaded of information, who is running in the first place:

The first type of the elections in 2019 is legislative; candidates, political parties or independent, try to win votes to represent a certain area of Indonesia. Those who win gets to influence Indonesian law. There are two political coalitions in which political parties band together for a common cause (read: winning the presidency). One goes by the name Koalisi Indonesia Kerja (no. 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13) or the Working Indonesia Coalition, the most prominent party being the Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan (no.3). The other is the Koalisi Indonesia Adil Makmur (no. 2, 8, 12) or Just and Prosperous Indonesia Coalition, the most prominent party being the Partai Gerakan Indonesia Raya (no.2).

Candidate 2 (Prabowo Subianto – Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno): Vision: A just, prosperous, religious, and sovereign Indonesia, maintaining independence in economy, a strong national personality in the field of culture and ensuring a harmonious life among citizens regardless of ethnicity, religion, social, or racial background, based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution of Indonesia. Mission: 1. An economy that is prosperous, fair, and environmentally aware Articles 33 and 34 of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia. 2. Intelligent, healthy, productive, and competitive Indonesians in a harmonious and peaceful environment with social protection and without discrimination. 3. A legal system that is transparent and not selective, and improving democracy 4. A noble national mindset that builds a just, prosperous, dignified, and friendly Indonesia blessed by God. 5. A national defense and security system protecting the wholeness and territories of Indonesia.

The most notable difference between the two candidates is where Indonesia should be headed. Vision: A thriving Indonesia that is Jokowi-Ma’ruf prioritizes an sovereign, independent, and ‘advanced’ Indonesia, while Prabowopersonable, based on mutual Sandiaga focuses on a ‘self-sufficient and independent’ Indonesia. This cooperation can be seen through their programs for the economy: the former wants Mission: to improve infrastructure while the 1. Improving the quality of life of latter aims to loosen trade barriers. Indonesians While the former intends to increase 2. An independent, productive the availability of food through economy developments in technology and 3. Just and equal development transportation, the latter wants to 4. Sustainable environment guarantee lower prices for 5. Cultural development (in production. The former develops, preservation and continuation) 6. A legal system that is trustworthy the latter regulates and consolidates. These differences can be narrowed and free of corruption down as such: Jokowi-Ma’ruf intends 7. Protection for all citizens to improve government action, while 8. A clean, effective, and trustworthy the latter plans to encourage a more governance liberal and less-intervening 9. A unitary state with effective governance. regional governments

Candidate 1 (Joko Widodo – Ma’ruf Amin):

Joko Widodo: was a supervisor at a paper company, started a furniture company, Mayor of Surakarta, Governor of Jakarta, incumbent President of Indonesia. Prabowo Subianto: Commander of Kopassus (Indonesian Special Forces), Commander of Kostrad (Indonesian Strategic Reserve), businessman in energy, palm oil, and fishing industries. Ma’ruf Amin: Muslim cleric, Indonesian parliament member, Jakarta City Council member, Presdiential Advisory Board member, Leader of Majelis Ulama Indonesia (Indonesian Ulema Council), Leader of Nahdlatul Ulama (Ulema’s Revivial). Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno: businessman in financial advisory and communications, Vice Governor of Jakarta.

Even so, their visions and missions are relatively similar with not a lot of significant differences in their political philosophies, unlike other countries where clear distinctions are made between leftright wings and conservative-liberal. Indonesian politics remains all the more figure-centric, in which one of the main considerations before voting is whether they like the candidate and their achievements and less about political ideology and policy. The following is a brief summary of both candidates’ track record:

This country was founded on freedom. And in pursuit and preservation of that freedom, we now stand in crossroads of the future of our country. With unity based on our nationwide-kinship, and with the universal dream of a better Indonesia, go into next month to prove me wrong: 2019 shouldn’t just be (although it will certainly have aspects of) the Year of Politics or the Year of People Getting Mad at Each Other. It should be the year of new beginnings.

Despite our win in the semis, we unfortunately faced defeat upon facing UPHC, a team that has won the JAAC senior girls basketball league a couple times already. On entering the game, we were all physically overly tired (the LV game had costed us), but the most vital aspect that had caused our loss was our mentality. We came in and played the game thinking of the TIMNAS/ DKI (national/ state province team) players that were present in the UPHC team, which severely affected how we played. PHOTO BY MARTIN R. SMITH

Even with a blind eye, it was obvious that we were mentally not ready, and this sadly costed us the championship banner.

Nevertheless, in spite of our loss in the finals, when looking at the brighter side of things, we did win as Finalists (second place). To add to that, we did successfully get another banner for SPHSC to proudly hang in the gym. Being our first season in the senior basketball league, we, as rookies, have put up a strong fight in beating the other 9 teams in the competition. Still having 2 more years left in high school, there is still lots of time for further improvements in skill and stamina as individuals and as a team.

We will come back stronger than ever next year and earn our rightful spot as champions!

WHAT'S TASTY by Aziza Halim Kerryan’s Cheesy Potato Pie 1. 2 x 400 g tins of baked beans 2. sea salt 3. freshly ground black pepper 4. 1.5 kg Maris Piper potatoes , or King Edward potatoes, peeled 5. 1 large knob of unsalted butter 6. 100 ml semi-skimmed milk 7. 1 whole nutmeg , for grating 8. 150 g Cheddar cheese

1. These pimped-up beans are also really tasty served in the classic way, on hot buttered toast. 2. Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/gas 7. If I’m short of time, I’ll keep this simple and empty the beans straight into a sturdy 20cm x 30cm baking tray, so they make a flat layer across the bottom, but, to take it a step further, pimp them up first. Finely slice the onion, garlic, peppers and chilli (I leave the seeds in, but deseed if you prefer). Heat a splash of oil in a large pan over a medium heat, then add the chopped veg and thyme leaves and fry for around 8 minutes, or until softened. Dice the tomatoes and add to the pan for another 5 minutes or so, or until jammy and reduced. Pour in the beans and simmer for a final 5 minutes, then season to how you like it and pour into the baking tray in a flat layer.

3. To make the cheesy mash, quarter the potatoes, halving any smaller ones, then put into a pan of boiling salted water. Reduce the heat to medium and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, or until tender. Drain in a colander, then return the empty pan to a low heat, place the colander on top and allow the potatoes to steam dry for a couple of minutes. Tip out any excess liquid from the pan, then tip in the potatoes, add the butter and about 75ml of milk. Mash well until light, fluffy and smooth, adding a splash more milk if needed. Stir in a few gratings of nutmeg, grate in one-third of the cheese and season to how you like it.

4. Layer the cheesy mash on top of the beans, carefully spreading it out to the edges in an even layer, then grate over the remaining cheese (I prefer mature Cheddar, but mild is fine too). Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the beans are hot through, the cheese is melted and golden, and it's bubbling at the edges. Serve with a crisp green salad and homemade coleslaw. This is my fail-safe goto dish if I’m in need of a bit of naughty comfort food.

Dutch Sugar Cookies (Arhemse Meisjes) by Martha Stewart – This recipe makes about 30 cookies. 1. Sugar (For sprinking) 2. 5 grams of Yeast 3. ¼ teaspoon of kosher salt 4. 1/3 cup whole milk 5. 1 ½ cups of unbleached allpurpose flour 6. 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract 7. 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, cut into tablespoons, room temperature.

1. Line a baking sheet with parchment; sprinkle evenly with sugar to cover. Set aside.

2. In a liquid-measuring cup, combine milk and yeast. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine flour, salt, and vanilla. Beat in milk mixture on medium-high speed until thoroughly combined, about 2 minutes. With mixer running, add butter, 1 tablespoon at a time, making sure it is fully incorporated before adding the next one. 3. Once all butter has been added, increase speed to high and beat 5 minutes. Turn out dough, wrap tightly in plastic, and refrigerate at least 2 hours and up to overnight. 4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Generously sprinkle sugar on work surface. Place dough on sugared surface; sprinkle with sugar to cover. Top with a piece of parchment, then roll out dough 1/4 inch thick. Using a 3-inch oval cutter, cut out cookies. Transfer to prepared baking sheet, spaced 1 inch apart. Sprinkle with additional sugar. Bake until deeply golden all over, 15 to 18 minutes. Let cool on sheet 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack and let cool completely.

Sweet and Sour Brisket (8 servings)

1. 3 1/2 to 4 pounds beef brisket, fat cap trimmed to 1/4 inch thick 2. Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 3. 1 tablespoon safflower oil 4. 2 onions, thinly sliced (4 cups) 5. 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth 6. 1 cup chili sauce (such as Heinz) or ketchup 7. 1/2 cup packed dark-brown sugar 8. 1/3 cup distilled white vinegar 9. 4 large carrots (about 1 1/2 pounds total), peeled and cut into 2-inch pieces 10. 1 3/4 pound Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces 11. Flat-leaf parsley leaves, for serving (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place brisket in a large, heavy-bottomed roasting pan; season with salt and pepper. Heat oil in a large straight-sided skillet over medium-high; add onions, 2 teaspoons salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper and cook, stirring, until onions are translucent, 3 to 4 minutes. Add broth, chili sauce, brown sugar, and vinegar; bring to a boil. 2. Place roasting pan over two burners; pour in broth mixture and return to a boil. Cover pan with parchment-lined foil and roast in oven 30 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees; roast 1 hour, 15 minutes more. Add carrots and potatoes and continue roasting, uncovered, tossing vegetables occasionally, 1 hour. 3. Baste meat with pan juices and continue to roast, basting and tossing vegetables occasionally, until meat is tender but not falling apart, and potatoes and carrots are cooked, about 1 hour more. 4. Transfer brisket to a cutting board. Let stand 10 minutes, then slice and serve with sauce, vegetables, and parsley.

THE THE 2019 2019

O S C A R S

a selection BY: JONATHAN WIDJAJA

My favorite moviemaker, Jean-Luc Godard, once said: “in cinema, the young...what interests them is a big camera, 50 people, and an Oscar.” And there were indeed a few instances in this year’s Academy Awards when some films achieved more than they should have. (*glances accusingly at Black Panther*). But let’s not berate the distinguished critics. Let’s focus instead on what they snubbed.

At Eternity's Gate What’s so captivating about Van Gogh that makes him probably the most popular artist as the subject choice of filmmakers, ever? Call it madness, or stubbornness, or genius; Willem Dafoe plays a heart-warming Vincent in his journeys across provincial France. Every shot, with gorgeous color palettes, mimics an impressionist piece, depicting the stillness of Nature, the indifferent World, and man at their mercy. Alas, the film would’ve been one of the greatest ever made about art, if only they got rid of the over-self-indulgent shaky camera (You’ll see what I mean. I got headaches 10 minutes into it). But the troubles of the artist are the main focus of the film: why create? And why live? While Julian Schnabel’s work does not directly answer any of these questions, it gives room for our personal involvement in art: it does not describe or explain, but paints beauty.

THE THE 2019 2019

O S C A R S

a selection BY: JONATHAN WIDJAJA

Cold War Love. What a word. Or hurt. Or dream. Shot in black-and-white sincerity, Joanna Kulig and Tomasz Kot plays a Polish couple in a world of fear and confusion. Through stormy affairs and contrasting settings, Pawel Pawlikowski’s dramatized account of his parents’ relationship tells of a love that soars in your heart and breaks it. Its often unruly, almost jazzy episodes reaffirm humanity’s defiant insistence that love never dies. Its characters seem isolated from reality, as if to say that human affection is worth more than anything else. It is a film of tenderness, but also of weakness. It aches of time lost and love perfectly imperfect. It desperately craves a world of their own in our world so cruel. It’s the Casablanca of our time.

First Man Most space movies only depict the awesomeness of being outside the world. Think of The Martian or Star Wars or the Alien franchise. Damien Chazelle’s biopic on Neil Armstrong, played by Ryan Gosling, does exactly the opposite: it’s a film on how home, and our shortcomings, stay in our hearts. It portrays the struggles of Armstrong dealing with his daughter’s death, as well as the great weight of becoming the first to step on the moon. The film reveres silence and movement, as if to say that there are losing fights and tragedy in between glorious moments. And it reminds us that great people are still human: troubled, worn out, flawed. But that’s what makes them great. That we choose to go to the moon and do other things because they are hard.
