Statement of Intent - Part 1 My work is based around the idea of human actions and environmental impacts. Humans have incredible power and we can have an irreversible impact wherever we go. I wanted to focus on this theme as it is most definitely a current issue which will require effort from everyone in the future to solve.

Environmental protests were prominent at the time I started my endeavour and my thoughts turned to how my one voice could forge a hopeful message in our world of noise and confusion. By conveying humanity’s impact on nature I hoped to show how every individual has their own part to play in saving our planet, and the wonders within, for future generations to enjoy.

In preparation for the piece I explored lens whacking as a way to convey my message. I initially thought to use this technique to show the human side of the piece as if it was being seen through a lens. However, I eventually realised a clearer more crisp image would deliver the message with more impact and so I used ordinary film to capture the footage.

Statement of Intent - Part 2 I investigated a number of artists and on a trip to the Royal Academy I was moved by a powerful animation by Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg that formed part of the ecovisionaries exhibition. The film was of a rhino that slowly formed from blocks of colour and slowly the blocks got smaller as the rhino moved around, showing evolution. When the rhino became a full picture it remained for a few seconds before disappearing. My interpretation was that this represented how easily the white rhino has become almost extinct due to human actions and ignorance. I see this now as a pivotal point in my development as it caused me to focus on nature as the secondary part of my film.

I experimented with rotoscoping and pixelation as a medium for the film. Although I enjoyed the creation process I thought it was too magical an experience for the viewer which would hide the tragic nature of the film.

My main artist inspiration was the film Koyaanisqatsi by Godfrey Reggio. I felt that this film resonated with my idea and that the way it depicts city life was really accurate and a good representation of passing time. It didn’t explore nature however so I was excited to find my own way to incorporate that into the film.

Statement of Intent - Part 3 I explored a few other aesthetics, such as the us of black and white footage, I eventually decided that intertwining the footage would have the most profound impact. I consider that using varying film speeds was a good addition because it portrayed the way time seems to speed up and slow down depending on our view on what is happening.

In my final piece, I will use footage of both the city and nature to create a film that has an emotional impact on the viewer. This is a theme I am passionate about and I want others to be able to view the issue through my eyes.

Due to the limited time we spent on this project the quality of the footage and sound is not what I would like it to have been.

Balloon Animation

I did some observational drawing and then photographed the objects for my sketchbook.

This is a storyboard for the test edit I made.

Unfortunately due to the lockdown I am unable to get anymore city footage and so a majority of my footage is country footage which is not what I wanted.

Overall though it gives the idea of how the ďŹ lm would come across.

When I created this film I didn't have the nature footage that I subsequently collected.

Therefore this film is primarily city footage. I still think it shows how I would want the film to be though.

Experimental Edit (Film stops at 1:22)

I felt that the experimental edit I did at school was my favourite edit so I have included that one, however I would have also included my other footage into the ďŹ lm if I was still able to access school facilities.
