Trilby C GCSE Art Exam 2020 - Event

Statement of Intent - Exam: Event I have aimed to produce a sketchbook that displays well my ideas, themes and work for this theme of Event. The main idea behind this piece is the cyclical event of seasons. I chose this theme because I am interested in the idea of ‘event’ as a routine and how these changes are displayed in the physical appearance of nature. I have chosen to portray this theme through a selection of four linocut prints with the same basic pattern but slightly different colour schemes for each season - eg. blue paper for winter, pink paper for spring. I chose this theme quite quickly as it grabbed my attention from the start. I made lots of experimental pieces in lots of different mediums, such as water and fine line pens, inks and bleach, coloured markers and pencils. I found a style of drawing that interested me and was quite expressive. I used a fine line pen and coloured brown markers to create a rough plan. I then made a wide range of prints with a selection of different designs in black and brown printing inks on different coloured sugar paper. I also used lots of my own photos that had links to the topic of ‘event’ and seasons to try and strengthen my theme.. From there, I sorted through my selection of photos on my contact sheet to try and decide which ones to use as inspiration for the prints. I thought about some photos of trees in different seasons from different angles and how they could represent the ideas I wanted. I settled on six photos, each with an aspect I want to get across in my prints: eg. blossoms, autumn leaves and the tree itself. As practice, I have begun to make a print of a tree, to which I will add layers of leaves. I will make this as a reduction print for my final piece; by first cutting out all the areas I want to keep the colour of the paper (for the corresponding season) and printing in different colours for the leaves in each season. Then I will cut out the areas I wanted to keep those colours and print over the top in brown for the tree trunk, then in black for the outlines. I used Valerie Lueth as artistic inspiration for prints of nature and trees. For my final coursework piece, I intend to use these methods to convey my ideas for the theme of ‘event’.
