STATEMENT OF INTENT - EVENT FILM The idea behind this film is to explore how a different perspective can alter our view of the same event or series of events. Initially I wanted to explore how two people could perceive the same event differently but this idea progressed and I decided to make a more focused film, depicting the view of one character observing the outside world. My central character is a young girl. She is young enough to have a different understanding of what adult life is, particularly how she perceives the day to day events that make up the average adult's life such as a their type of job, commuting to work, meetings etc - but also old enough to form clear views and analyse the world around her. The idea of exploring the divergence of perception between different ages came to me when thinking about my own future; I’ve often heard adults say you should cherish the time when you are young. However, a lot of young people wish they were older. I want to express this dilemma of looking forwards through the narration of the young girl. Being young she is faced with a lot of uncertainty for the future; her life could take many different paths. She feels a mixture of both excitement and anxiety, imagining adult life. Despite having favoured animation for my mock exam, I really wanted to use a more cinematic, almost epic approach to this piece, while filming the everyday. I want it to be aesthetically pleasing, with a sensual warmth and calmness conveyed through careful lighting and cinematography. I will experiment with speeding up and slowing down the footage to create a feeling of serenity and focus to completely immerse the viewer in the thought processes of the girl. I have researched a few filmmakers, like Bas Hordijk and Mischa Rozema, who use techniques that produce a style similar to my ambition for this piece. Both artists focus on tranquility and excitement, singling out poetic moments within a hectic urban environment. I really want to achieve this effect as the girl watches the world pass by, consumed by her thoughts. I will combine the sound of everyday life with voice and a rhythmic, repetitive music in the style of Philip Glass, for example Glassworks: Openings or New York: Mad Rush by Philip Glass
