Little Shop of Horrors A Unique Production in Four Extracts, Autumn 2020 Director’s Note: Preparations for this project began during the first lockdown, long before we knew whether or not schools would reopen for the Autumn Term. I was determined that, whatever happened, we would work towards some sort of performance and that we would have a lot of fun and learn new skills along the way.

For me, putting on a school production is just as much about the process as the end result.

Yes, of course we aim to put on the best possible show at the end of the rehearsal period, but it is the collaborative processes of working together in teams on each of the different aspects of a performance in clubs, rehearsals and enrichment classes and then seeing those elements come together to make a whole that is so rewarding. Our student performers, musicians, designers, makers and technicians have all worked with incredible commitment and creativity, many of them learning new skills or trying new disciplines for the first time.

Producing four completely separate year group versions of the show has been a Herculean task. Each year group presented a slightly different extract, between all four of them covering most of the full script. Each version had its own live band and its own technical crew. And whilst there are some obvious similarities between the different versions, each one has its own identity and each of the casts and crew have worked to overcome their own challenges.

I am deeply grateful to Matthew Rudd for arranging the band parts for four very different ensembles and for rehearsing each of these separately. I am also hugely grateful to colleagues Cherry Blanchard, Aidan Whyte and Will Frost for joining some of the bands to play bass, guitar and drums respectively.

I am indebted to my colleague Deborah Foote for running an additional rehearsal room to enable several casts to rehearse simultaneously; and without her time and expertise we would not have been able to create filmed versions of each of the performances which will be shared with the relevant year groups and their parents. And of course, our theatre technician Charlotte Cooper has provided invaluable support behind the scenes throughout.

Finally, I must thank the school leadership team for being so accommodating and for enabling us to continue with this project in such challenging times. I know that many schools have not been able to offer Drama as a practical subject this term and school productions have been significantly impacted or even shelved altogether. It has been an absolute joy and a real privilege to be able to realise this unique production. An experience to treasure.
