Statement of intent Initially, my final piece was influenced by the theme of Protests. I looked at artists such as Sam Taylor- Wood and Bill Viola and was inspired to create an installation; having heard Pink Floyd in particular, I wanted a wall to represent the divide between the leaders and the people they lead. I had planned to use projectors and cardboard boxes in order to respond to the often untrue propaganda that our leaders feed us. This idea, however, was forced to a halt following the Coronavirus pandemic that hit the world. School was cancelled and I was forced to stay inside my house; removing my access to sophisticated editing software and my ability to create an installation. Whilst I was deeply saddened by this, the current situation is too big a historical event for me not to document.

We are living in a new virtual world. Restrictions on the public have forced us to turn to technology and social media in order to communicate. Seeing the shift in society, from Handshakes to Facetime, exhilarated me to respond to the way that Coronavirus has affected us. A recent BBC documentary- Age of the Image- helped me to explore this idea further- discussing how the distinction between reality and image has become increasingly difficult to find. This helped me to work out how, if I wanted to create a film, I could show that image and reality are not too far apart. I initially took influence from the content creator Cut, for my fast-paced editing style and used this in order to help me conduct the interviews. I recorded 19 interviews over the Facetime app Zoom; asking each person 1 main question ‘How is Coronavirus affecting you?’, along with a series of follow up questions to help prompt their answers. Having researched artistic responses to the 1918 (Spanish) Flu, I was encouraged to use references to artists such as Munch and Schiele in my film, which I am editing using iMovie.

As said by Marshall McLuhan- The Medium is the Message. My final piece has been created using footage, editing and a soundtrack all created online. I want my film to show how life has changed as a result of the Corona outbreak; however, I also want to reflect that we are increasingly becoming a digital society. Exploring links between war, historical pandemics and philosophy, I will be able to portray that whilst we have been restricted from each other physically, the Corona pandemic has made us a more interconnected world. My aim for this film was to capture life as it is for those affected by the rules surrounding Covid-19, rather than those with the virus itself.
