Exam Work: ‘Event’ Beatrice S

A newspaper excerpt I found on the event of a large tree falling down in my local area. The photos in the top left hand corner of the mind map were taken by me when I came across the tree.

Brainstorm on ‘Event’

We visited the Royal Academy, focusing on the ‘Eco Visionaries’ exhibition that was being presented there.

An interesting newspaper article that I came across about ‘eco-anxiety’ and the pessimistic view many young people and adults hold for the earth’s future and humanity’s along with it.

A newspaper article on Dora Maar that I came across.

We visited the Dora Maar exhibition at the Tate Modern.

We visited an exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum called Feast & Fast.

I then compared the food of banquets that we saw at the exhibition with food that modern families eat nowadays.

A presentation of my samples where I experimented with the events of heating and burning materials and coffee stains.

See portfolio to find a board with more samples presented.

A presentation of samples of rust events and my depiction of them.

Here I first bring forward the idea for my final piece: the first hot air balloon ascent. The page also includes my own depictions of it using acrylic, pencil, watercolour and black pens of different thicknesses.

I experiment with the textiles technique of confetti quilting.

I blew up a balloon and drew the Montgolfier hot air balloon on it using black pen. I put papier mâchÊ on a balloon and then painted in acrylic the Montgolfier balloon patterns on it.

Artist research on James Fox.

Presentation of free machine stitch, confetti quilting and reverse appliquĂŠ samples.

Idea development: I looked into modern things that fly that have serious negative aspects and impacts on people and the environment. I have been exploring the idea of how the innocent hot air balloon has evolved into evil missiles and war planes. I image transferred these pictures of the aircraft as this is a technique I’m thinking of using for my final piece.

Here I drew out and experimented with different composition layouts.

Artist research into L.S. Lowry, particularly focusing on his simplified figures which I’m keen to bring forward into my final piece, however they would be sewn using the machine, instead of drawn.

My final plan: involving layout, colour and fabric.

Statement of Intent My exam piece will be my depiction of the Montgolfier brothers’ balloon. The ascent of this hot air balloon was the first ascent of a hot air balloon in history with human passengers. As well as the actual scene of the ascent, commercial and war planes and missiles will feature having been image transferred black and white around the balloon as if they are flying in the sky. The reason for this is the idea that the invention of an innocent hot air balloon has evolved into evil war planes and missiles destroying the environment as well as people. The balloon will be colourful formed by reverse appliquÊ, appliquÊ, quilting and confetti quilting samples all sewed together in a patchwork. I will be using bold, colourful, patterned fabrics to emphasise the contrast between the happy, positive, colourful balloon and the bleak, evil, colourless planes and missiles of the future.

Statement of Intent continued. The figures, in the style of Lowry, along with the trees and house will be formed with machine free stitch. When I experimented with free stitch I thought it was really effective and I liked the more sketchy, free and more unpredictable style that using free stitch presents. The background, other than the image transfers will be painted as sky using acrylic paint.
