Year 10 and 11 course work All my coursework, including my coursework sketchbook and everything inside it, boards and final pieces (unless otherwise listed) can be found at school, in my portfolio, in the year 11 cupboard, in the fine art room. There should also be a canvas not included in any of the school projects, but done as part of my course work, I’ve attached an image for reference to the right.
Mock Exam final Piece My mock exam piece can be found in the Fine art room (not sure if it’s been moved) on an easel. As it's not in my portfolio, here’s a photo for reference, however it would be best to see the actual thing to get a feel for the piece. Further notes and explanation about this piece - including plan, artist inspiration and statement of intent can be found in my sketchbook. (Because of the mirrors on it you can see me taking the photo, sorry)
A copy of my mock statement of intent: I have aimed to produce a sketchbook of work demonstrating the development of my ideas based around the theme of Reflections and Identity. I have used various techniques to establish my ideas: photography to capture the image I wish to paint, experimenting with the use of mirror shards to frame and surround my subject. As well as an array of drawing techniques to further develop my ideas and refine my choice of which photo I want to paint, then I experimented with painting techniques to establish the medium I will use and practice painting my subject. Finally, I also researched artists of inspiration for my final piece. Researching and developing my ideas before completing my piece has helped add clarity to my concept and choice of techniques. For my mock exam piece I hope to produce an A1 oil painting on wood, of my friend Elana. On the back of my wood panel I aim to create a wire structure of birds breaking free from the back of the wood, yet remaining constrained by the wire which attaches them. My piece will be inspired by the theme of Identity and Reflections with further emphasis on the relationship between the two key themes. I will look at whether our identities are purely made up of reflections: our nature, whether we are reflections of that which came before us, evolution, our genetics and parenting, as well as the impact of nurture; how we reflect the world around us, encompassing society and everything we interact with, these factors all impact and shape our identities. We are impressionable, influenced by everything we interact with and all that went into our creation. Therefore, my piece will pose the question, ‘Are we truly the masters of

Mock statement of intent continued: our own identity, or are we just reflections?’ As well as further exploring this through the contrast between nature and nurture; how our nature, the identity we are born with, impacts our nurture, for example the effect of status and wealth on the way we are treated within society. Finally, this question aligns with the question of whether or not we have free will and responsibility for our actions. If not, if we are solely reflections, can there be an infinite regress of causes in the creation our identities? For my oil painting, I have been inspired by John William Waterhouse, a pre-raphaelite painter from the late 1800s to early 1900s. His work inspired me due to both its similarity and connection to the photo I will work from, as well as its depiction of the harmonious relationship between humans and nature. I wanted to present my subject (Elana) as a bystander; inquisitive of the world around us, and her own identity, but herself unable to control it. Therefore I chose not to explore her personal identity as the focal point of the piece, but instead, look at the identities of mankind as a whole, using my friend as the subject for this. The oil painting will be on one side of my piece, this side will represent the impact of nature on our identity - who we are born. The piece will be interrupted by mirror acrylic shards, allowing the audience to interact with my piece. The use of mirror means the piece is ever changing as what it reflects changes, just as with our identities we change depending on the world around us and what is in front of us, in this case, the viewers of the piece. I hope in adding this element to my piece, it will harness it to the moment and allow for the piece to be ever changing, due to its interaction with the world. For the wire sculpture on the opposite side of the wooden board, I intend to create multiple birds attempting to break free from the confines of the wire they are made up of, as inspired by the work of Celia Smith. This side of my piece will represent how our nature attempts to push the boundaries of the confines of society, yet is controlled by it, highlighting how our identities are limited by reflections from our nature and nurture.
