Events

Spertus Institute offers dynamic learning opportunities, rooted in Jewish wisdom and culture and open to all. Graduate programs and workshops train future leaders and engage individuals in exploration of Jewish life. Public programs include films, speakers, seminars, and concerts—at the Institute’s Michigan Avenue facility, in the Chicago suburbs, and online.

Passover & Transitions Letter from Dr. Hal M. Lewis Though it seemed impossible to believe at the time, the subzero temperatures of December and January have given way to the warmer promise of spring.

During Hanukkah, when we celebrated light, precisely because it seemed so hard to come by, it was hard to imagine that buds would reappear on the trees and warm(ish) weather would make its return anytime soon.

And yet, here we are about to celebrate Passover, the holiday our tradition refers to as hag he’aviv—the celebration of spring. Many of the rituals of the seder are vivid reminders of the emergence of warmer weather, rebirth, and renewal. This transition, from the gloominess of winter to the optimism of spring, is a major theme of Passover. But it is not the only transition that comes to mind at this time of year.

The essence of the Passover story is the journey me’avdut le’herut—the historic transition of the Israelites from slaves to free people. The metamorphosis, from the “narrow” straits of Egypt (the Hebrew word for Egypt, Mitzrayim, derives from the root word tzar meaning “narrowness”) to the expanse of freedom— existential and national—gives the Passover story its eternal resonance.

In addition to these transitions: from the cold darkness of winter to the blossoming of spring, and from the depths of enslavement to the pinnacles of human freedom, there is another more prosaic transition on our minds here at Spertus. I refer to the pending transition of executive leadership about to take place at the end of June. At that time, when I step down from the Presidency, my friend and esteemed colleague, Dr. Dean P. Bell, will become the ninth CEO of the Institute.

I am learning that transitions are a time for reflection and promise, and most of all, a time for profound gratitude. To you who have supported our efforts, attended our programs, enrolled in our courses, given generously of your time and treasure over the years, please accept my heartfelt appreciation. To the Spertus Board of Trustees and its chair people over these past years, to the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, and to the intrepid group of extraordinarily generous philanthropists and foundations, who stuck with us during good times and less good times, please know that we would not be here today but for your unwavering commitment to lifelong Jewish learning and the training and development of Jewish leaders.

To our students and alumni, I hope you know that you truly are the very reasons for our being. You, more than most, understand that Judaism is an adult religion that must never be relegated to the realm of the pediatric.

To our faculty, your work at Spertus is much more than an academic appointment.

The rigor of your research and the intensity of your classroom instruction leave little doubt that, while there are larger institutions of higher learning, none is more seriously devoted to the transformation of Jewish life across the

And finally, to my many professional colleagues, those who were with us during the dark days when the Institute’s future was in question and those who have since become part of this truly incredible enterprise, I am grateful and proud to have worked with each of you.

Introducing Dr. Keren E. Fraiman

As Dr. Dean P. Bell prepares for his new role as Spertus Institute’s President and CEO, we are proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Keren E. Fraiman as Spertus Institute’s new Dean and Chief Academic Officer.

Dr. Fraiman, who has been teaching in our MA in Jewish Professional Studies program for the last year, comes to Spertus from the iCenter for Israel Education, where she has been serving as Director of Research and Evaluation and she continues to serve on the faculty of their Master’s Concentration in Israel Education.

Dr. Fraiman received her PhD in International Relations and Security Studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her BA in Political Science and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago. She was a Schusterman Israel Scholar, has worked at the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis, led multiple Birthright Israel trips, and served as an officer in the IDF.

Spertus Institute’s Center for Jewish Leadership is proud to have been selected by the American Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) to provide leadership training through the Kaplan Leadership Initiative, a new initiative for professionals who serve Jewish communities in Europe, the Former Soviet Union, and Latin America. Spertus faculty are currently providing mentor training to the European group. In October, Spertus will host the first Kaplan Leadership Initiative Global Leadership Seminar, providing cohort-based learning on key topics—from skill development to leading change, from fostering innovation to enhancing communal sustainability.

Resources

When we think about Jewish art, we think about paintings, mosaics, and murals, sculpture and architectural spaces, and objects used for holidays and rituals. But Jewish art is also a window into the cultures of Jews over time and geography. As such, it can be not only decorative or utilitarian, but subversive or polemical. It provides insight into the interaction between Jewish communities and the wider cultures in which they exist.

Rabbi Jodi Kornfeld received her Doctor of Science in Jewish Studies from Spertus Institute. She was ordained by the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism, is the rabbi of Beth Chaverim Humanistic Jewish Community in Deerfield, and currently serves as President of the Association of Humanistic Rabbis.

ISO 6346: ineluctable immigrant Through April 22, 2018 | Ground Level Arts Lab

Leadership

Spertus Institute presents a site-specific installation by artist Ellen Rothenberg. Focusing on both history and current events, the project is inspired by objects Rothenberg uncovered in the Spertus collection—as well as research she pursued in Berlin at Germany’s largest refugee camp, housed in the monumental Tempelhof Airport, a disused site built by the Nazis.

Arts & Culture

Ellen Rothenberg is an award-winning artist whose work has been presented in prestigious institutions across Europe and North America. Her installations often use archival documents to examine the mechanisms underlying political engagement.

Rothenberg teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she was recently appointed an inaugural Faculty Research Fellow of the Institute for Curatorial Research and Practice.

This exhibition is organized by Ionit Behar, Spertus Institute’s Curator of Collections and Exhibitions.

Jewish Artists Fellowship Exhibition May 23–August 12, 2018 | Ground Level Arts Lab

This exhibition presents the works by nine accomplished artists, participants in Spertus Institute’s first Chicago Jewish Artists Fellowship.

Throughout the last year, the artists conducted individual and collective research into their Jewish identity and artistic practice.

The 2017–2018 Chicago-based artists Nelly Agassi, Leslie Baum, Iris Bernblum, Dianna Frid, Matthew Girson, Jesse Malmed, Geof Oppenheimer, Roni Packer, and Rana Siegel.

The Fellowship program is co-directed by Spertus Institute’s Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Ionit Behar and curator, writer, and educator Ruslana Lichtzier. The artists—who work in film, photography, performance, drawing, painting, and sculpture—have had opportunities to learn from leading scholars, visit artists’ studios, and work closely with objects from Spertus Institute’s collection. On view will be new projects by the Fellows, along with objects from the Spertus collection selected as part of their work.

Spertus Institute is pleased to announce its participation in Art Design Chicago, an initiative of the Terra Foundation for American Art with presenting partner The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation. As part of this exploration of Chicago’s art and design legacy, Spertus will present more than 30 works from its collection by Todros Geller, a central figure in the history of modern American Jewish art.

Degenerate Art Sunday, April 29 from 2 to 4 pm Throughout history, art has maintained the power to threaten the social order.

Delving into music that was censored, banned, or labeled “degenerate,�

Fifth House Ensemble sheds new light on works by musicians and artists facing oppression in Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, and the United States during the dark days of McCarthyism.

Fifth House Ensemble will be joined on stage by guest artists from street art collective CMK to explore art that challenges authorities today.

On this project, Fifth House Ensemble collaborated with the American Civil Liberties Union, Holocaust Community Services, Spertus Institute, Artists at Risk, Unsilence, the Guild Literary Complex, the University of Chicago, and street art collective CMK to illuminate stories of censored and suppressed art of the past and the present day.

Following the performance, join Fifth House Ensemble and representatives from each organization for a panel discussion about censorship, human rights, and freedom of expression.

Grace Kessler Overbeke is a PhD candidate at Northwestern University’s acclaimed interdisciplinary program in theater and drama, where her dissertation is focused on Jean Carroll, the first Jewish female standup comedian.

A practicing dramaturg, Overbeke has taught for Northwestern’s Crown Family Center for Jewish and Israel Studies and the Searle Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning.

Her directing credits include Second City main-stage and touring productions as well as Stephen Colbert’s oneman show Describing a Circle at Live Bait. Libera teaches at Columbia College Chicago and has presented at venues from the Aspen Ideas Festival to the Stanford Graduate School of Business. She is the author of The Second City Almanac of Improvisation.
