Spertus Institute named one of Illinois’ 200 Great Places In conjunction with Illinois’ Bicentennial, the Illinois Council of The American Institute of Architects(AIA Illinois) named Spertus Institute, designed by Krueck + Sexton Architects, one of Illinois’ 200 Great Places.

“We’re delighted Spertus has been selected,” said Mark Sexton of Krueck + Sexton Architects.

“We created the building to elevate Spertus Institute’s programs and people. The architecture reflects the Institute’s open-to-all mission.”

Spertus Institute Chancellor Dr. Hal M. Lewis called the building’s recognition “its own lesson in leadership.” He said, “We teach that innovation in the face of obstacles can drive excellence.

Our colleagues at Krueck + Sexton did just that.

Faced with a range of constraints, including a tiny narrow lot and a nonprofit client with a fixed budget yet immeasurable dreams, they created a building that beautifully serves the needs of our constituents and community.”

Letter from Dr. Dean P. Bell Dear Friends: This is my first opportunity to formally address the Spertus community in my new role as President of the Institute. I am quite humbled by this appointment and thankful to the Board of Trustees for their faith and trust in me. I am inspired by the work of our talented faculty and staff and by the passion and engagement of our students. And I am excited about the future of an institution that profoundly impacts so many lives and communities here in Chicago, across the Midwest, and increasingly in national and international contexts.

I have had the great fortune to work with two remarkable predecessors in the President’s office at Spertus: Dr. Howard A. Sulkin, who for a quarter century labored to build and extend the reach of the Institute, and Dr. Hal M. Lewis, who engineered an impressive post-recession turnaround and set us on our current course, bringing leadership best practices to all that we do.

According to Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers, in a frequently cited passage, “It is not your responsibility to finish the work, but neither are you free to desist from it.” I am honored to continue the work of my predecessors, recognizing their important role in our history and development of our institution. I thank Dr. Lewis for continuing on as Chancellor, a new role in which he will continue to teach, provide thought leadership, and give guidance to us all.

Although I may be discharged from the obligation of finishing the work—indeed, our work creating vibrant learning Jewish communities and training great Jewish leaders is never really done—I have been equally stirred by the notion that we must never desist in our work. The concept of responsibility is quite complex, especially in our religious tradition.

Over the course of this academic year, we will grapple with the theme of responsibility from many different vantage points in a wide range of programs.

Programs will merge theory with practice and constructively examine diverse opinions. Throughout, I look forward to working with our Trustees, faculty, and staff to expand our unique and valuable efforts in higher Jewish education. For that is our responsibility and commitment to each of you and to everyone with whom we interact.

In this fall season of introspection and renewal, I am thrilled to work with you to maintain the wonderful programs you have come to associate with Spertus Institute, as well as to dream together to develop and launch new and powerful initiatives. It is our responsibility to reflect carefully, plan thoughtfully, and creatively advance learning rooted in tradition and responsive to the needs around us.

Executive MA in Jewish Professional Studies This unique program serves Jewish communal executives with 12+ years of professional experience. Taught by some of the best faculty working today, it combines seminars and online courses with executive coaching and a personalized capstone project. Participants from across North America learn to leverage opportunity, inspire excellence in staff and trustees, and lead through times of change.

The program can be completed in just 12 months because executive experience can count for the equivalent of one year of graduate credit. Generous fellowships are available to cover up to 60% of the total cost for professionals working full-time in the Jewish community. Programs with Global Impa Europe, Russia, and the Former Soviet Union

As part of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee’s Kaplan Leadership Initiative, Spertus is training mentors and offering online courses for students who serve Jewish communities in Europe, Russia, and the Former Soviet Union. In October, students will come together at Spertus for their first Global Leadership Seminar.

Todros Geller was an influential Chicago artist who was central to modern American Jewish art. He believed art to be a powerful agent for change and his work addressed social and political concerns that still challenge us today.

Arts & Culture

This exhibition draws primarily from Spertus Institute’s collection, which includes extensive Geller holdings. More than 30 works are on view, the majority for the first time, along with unique archival material.

Set in LA, NY, and Budapest (with a short stop in Chicago), Memento Park begins with an unexpected call from the Australian consulate. Protagonist Matt Santos learns of a valuable painting believed to have been looted from his family during WWII. To recover it, he must repair his relationship with his father, unearth his family history, and restore his connection to Judaism.

This year’s One Book events are part of the Solomon Goldman Lecture Series, generously endowed by the late Rose and Sidney Shure.

Chefs Michael Solomonov and Steven Cook are the authors Israeli Soul, Federal Donuts, and Zahav, which in 2016 won Best International Cookbook and James Beard Book of the Year.

The chefs will be signing books at a reception following the presentation.

This is the 2018 Norman Asher Memorial Program.

New for You In 2016, Spertus Institute hosted the premiere of Raise the Roof, an award-winning feature documentary about the reconstruction of a magnificent, mural-covered, 18th-century Polish synagogue that was destroyed by the Nazis.

Raise the Roof is available to Spertus students and members through the streaming service Kanopy.

It is our pleasure to announce new offerings for Spertus students, alumni and members.

Film Streaming from the Asher Library Spertus Institute’s Asher Library is exploring and testing new ways to expand our online resources. During this period, we will be offering trials of various services to find the best match for our students and members.

We are currently testing Kanopy, an online streaming service that offers a range of Jewish-themed films including documentaries and dramas. We encourage our students and members to explore the range of films that are available through this service. At the conclusion of this three-month trial, we will decide whether to incorporate Kanopy into the permanent offerings of the Asher Library. Sharon Kohn is an experienced attorney with a background in marketing and advertising law. She recently started a new position at Thomson Reuters as a Senior Legal Editor after working for major corporations including Kraft Foods, McDonalds, and Rand McNally. Active in Chicago’s cultural community, she has served on the boards of Highland Park’s Music Theatre Company, Next Theatre, and Anchor Graphics and is a docent at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center.

David Elyashar is a partner at Wipfli LLP in Chicago. A CPA and Certified Valuation Analyst, he advises corporations, businesses, and individuals. He is a member of the Finance Committee for Camp Ramah in WI, a board member of the Wipfli Foundation, and served on the Executive Board of JCYS (Jewish Council for Youth Services). He looks forward to bringing his expertise in leadership and strategic planning to Spertus.
