Ma hew Farris Regional Sales Manager, Pa na Energy
It’s the most wonderful me of the year!
The end of the calendar year brings a me to celebrate, reflect, and appreciate the spirit of kindness and giving. Many of you hold Christmas tradi ons that have remained unchanged for genera ons. Some may find yourselves surrounded by family, with stockings full and presents overflowing beneath the tree. Others may be celebra ng Christmas from a desolate pad alongside fellow field hands, illumi‐nated by the glow of flare stacks against the night sky. S ll others may be crea ng new tradi ons with friends or a growing family. However you celebrate, I hope this season is meaningful and special for you.
This year, my family will be hunkered down in Midland as we prepare to welcome a baby boy into our family of four. With the Christmas spirit and celebra ng the birth of Jesus Christ guiding our com‐pass, our son’s upcoming arrival has inspired what I’ve begun calling our “Christmas Light” fewer dec‐ora ons inside the house, a few hundred fewer lights outside, and fewer presents around the tree. The Farris family will be focused on naviga ng one of life’s biggest transi ons and teaching our oldest how to be helpful, even when she would prefer to do something else. Wish us luck in reasoning with a fouryear-old it promises to be an adventure.
In our corner of the industry, December o en brings a rush either to close out the year or to squeeze four weeks of work into two. Regardless, it provides an opportunity for all of us to reset and prepare for the year ahead. In the new year, our sec on remains commi ed to our two primary goals: dissemina ng technical knowledge and providing scholarships to the next genera on of petrole‐um professionals.
Regarding our technical sessions, our study group chairs have worked diligently this past year to priori‐ze quality over quan ty. Upon reflec on, we recognized that “more” does not always mean “be er,” par cularly in terms of a endance and engagement. As our industry evolves, we must remain nimble and ready to pivot con nuing our focus on delivering high-value technical content.
In connec on with our scholarship efforts, we are also working on a refreshed approach to reques ng sponsorships, dona ons, and other support. We understand the economic environment remains fluid, and we are commi ed to staying flexible to maintain our scholarship commitments year over year.
A er extensive considera on, conversa ons with other SPE sec ons across the U.S., and valuable input from many of you, we believe a new direc on is needed. This month, we look forward to introducing the Annual SPE Permian Basin Sponsorship Campaign a streamlined yearly giving model designed to adapt to changing economic condi ons while crea ng a more sustainable approach to suppor ng our sec on’s events and ini a ves.

SPE Permian Basin Chapter
The two and ½- day agendas are now posted on the website (CO2Conference.net).
Many dis nguished speakers are coming to the downtown Midland Bush Center from a several States to illustrate the rapidly growing ac vity related to CO2 capture, new CO2 pipelines, and geological storage.
Two highlighted panels (from North Dakota and Wyoming) will illustrate what their re‐spec ve States have dome and are con nuing to do that encourage u liza on of indus‐trially captured CO2 emissions. Cyclic injec on into horizontal wells and into mature water floods will be addressed as it progresses in a couple of States.
Texas and Louisiana speakers will show how the projects are being economically driven by both oil produc on and qualifica on for the newly revised Federal tax credits. How deals are being constructed will be outlined in some details by deal makers from Wash‐ington and Houston.
Several speakers will highlight how the new AI data centers will impact electricity needs which is likely to spur natural gas genera on and plant emissions capture. The Permian Basin is finding itself in the midst of many of those project planners. The Monday (Dec 8th) field trip will feature two of those near billion dollar projects already under construc on in Ector County.
Go to www.co2conference.net for more informa on and to register. The hype you may have heard about CO2 capture from emission sources has moved on to real projects. This conference is an opportunity not to miss.
