Fellow Permian Basin SPE Sec on Members, Given the upcoming holiday season, November is naturally a me of giving thanks and expressing gra tude for others and the world we live in. I am thankful for this sec on that con nues to provide a wonderful sense of community to myself and 1,600 other affiliated members. Fun fact: the Permian Basin SPE Chapter was founded 78 years ago as of this month on November 14th, 1945, and is the 5th oldest SPE Sec on in the world! Together, we’re con nuing the legacy of the Permian Basin Chapter and preserving the rich history. I am also very thankful for the awesome SPE Board of Directors I get to serve alongside. Without them, con nuing the legacy of this SPE Sec on would not be possible. It is truly a team effort. Hopefully you’ve had the pleasure of ge ng to know some of them at recent SPE events. If not, the next couple of pages highlight various Board members and what they are thankful for this holiday season. Enjoy! In the spirit of gra tude and giving back, I want to encourage you to come out and support the Chapter’s upcoming service event at the new and improved Chris Davidson Opportunity Park on November 17th from 6:00 – 8:00pm. This state -of-the-art universally accessible park in Midland is designed to remove barriers and provide the benefits of play to people of all physical and mental abili es. volunteers to maintain the beau fica on of the park. Heidi Higginson, our Community Service Chair, has done a great job iden fying monthly opportuni es for our membership to get plugged into the community in impac ul ways. The hard part is done – you just have to show up! Everyone has the ability to offer up two hours of their week to support a great cause in town, meet a new face, and ensure we have clean recrea onal facili es in town. Furthermore, the SPE Interna onal Dis nguished Lecturer series con nues this month with Dr. Torsten Clemens, Senior Reservoir Engineering Advisor at OMV Energy, who will be presen ng on a quan ta ve approach to decision making and produc on forecas ng under uncertainty when planning a field development. The first SPE Dis nguished Lecturer of the term last month had a great turnout, high audience par cipa on, and several insigh ul challenges to the industry with regards to frac design op miza on and current understanding. TECHNICAL TOUR SPE Permian Basin Energy Conference Recap By: Kyle Sco , Luis Baez, Johannes Alvarez, and Tom Blasingame (SPE PBEC Co-Chairs) The 2nd annual SPE Permian Basin Energy Conference was held in Midland Sept 25-27, 2023 and was another great success for this Permian Basin operator-focused event. The exci ng new format of operator-driven technical content introduced in 2022 was very well-received again and the event experienced a 20% increase in audience a endance. The conference program was constructed to emphasize current and relevant technical topics delivered by Permian operators, for Permian operators. The goal of this conference is for a endees to receive ac onable takeaways. The phrase “a rising de raises all ships” was used several mes over the 2-1/2 day conference as an appropriate analogy for the mutual benefit of sharing learnings amongst peers. Themes included integrated field development strategies, complex subsurface interpreta ons, comple ons op miza on, advanced produc on analysis, enhanced oil recovery, induced seismicity, innova on, operator priori es, and our industry’s role in the local community, na onal energy security, and global energy demand. Mr. Clay Gaspar (Devon Energy, CEO & Exec. VP) gave an inspiring and significant keynote talk on "finding the next Permian," which very likely will be new plays within the Permian. The poten al of the Permian Basin is so substan al that it can literally provide a significant percentage of the con nued global demand growth. The ingenuity of our industry is rising to the challenge of dras cally reducing the global carbon-footprint while con nuing to provide reliable, low-cost energy. Technology development and field applica ons will play a huge role in accomplishing this — from minimizing carbon emissions to u liza on of Carbon Capture, U liza on, and Storage (CCUS) efforts the industry has provided.

As is tradi on, the conference hosts both Midland and Delaware Basin Operator Plenaries to "book-end" the conference, showcasing examples of how operators successfully implement strategies to increase efficiencies, lower costs, improve recoveries, and move towards net-zero emissions. ConocoPhillips also conducted a dual-session, showcasing how new interpreta ons of the complex subsurface can be incorporated into field development design changes to improve recoveries, enhance field opera ng efficiencies, and develop a reduced emissions pad ac vity in an economically efficient manner. In addi on, a comple ons op miza on panel of technical experts gave insights into the latest field diagnos cs and comple ons technologies that will con nue drive the next phase of improved well performance and surveillance. Papers and invited presenta ons also covered subjects such as advanced produc on analysis, the latest in geochemical produc on surveillance methods, wellbore cleanouts, GOR forecas ng, and even a rare peak into enhanced oil recovery field results. Targeted short presenta ons from technology vendors also helped to address operator challenges with the latest solu ons in technology and innova on.
In this year's conference a unique panel of operators, university, & RRC representa ves were assembled to review the importance of leveraging SWD downhole pressures in understanding, predic ng, and mi ga ng increased seismicity — as well as con nuing to drive collabora on within the industry to provide for safe and responsible ways of opera ng in our community. The Permian Basin Energy Conference is one of the most unique mee ngs in the industry — a technology event uniquely focused on a major regional play. A conference where the industry personnel have the opportunity to share best prac ces and current learnings for the purpose of collec vely advancing the industry. Networking events during the conference also provided a great opportunity to connect with new peers and catch-up with old ones. We look forward to your par cipa on at the PBEC in October 2024 so start thinking of how you can contribute to the technical sessions here in Midland next year.
