CHAIRMAN’S CORNER
Dear SPE Members,
Tyler Yancey Petroleum Engineer Chevron
SPE-PB Chairman 2024-2025
As we usher in the new year, I am delighted to extend a warm welcome to each of you. The beginning of a new year is always a me of reflec on and renewal, a perfect opportunity to set new goals and aspira ons for ourselves. Whether your goals are professional, personal, or a blend of both, I encourage you to aim high and stay mo vated. Remember, the journey towards achieving your goals is o en as rewarding as the des na on. I recently saw this mo va onal speech from Colorado Football coach Deion Sanders. I summarized it as “Keep Making Plays”, a phrase he repeated throughout the speech. I interpreted it as an analogy for keep making progress, keep working hard, keep focused, keep trying, “keep on keeping on”.
In his speech he talked about his work ethic and why he was known as a success. He men oned about when he played football his best plays came in prac ce and not on gameday. He had many highlight films on unbelievable plays, which makes it more amazing that even be er plays he made were not recorded on video in the spotlight! Listening to this speech really got me mo vated specifically this part. He said in his speech, “I prac ced like I played, so when I played it would be prac ce. There is somebody out there right now, the light ain’t on you, but keep making plays. Nobody is talking about you but keep making plays. I know your sales numbers aren’t where your friends are but keep making plays. Nobody is talking about you and you’re not on the leaderboard right now but keep making plays. The be er you are, the be er its going to be for your company. The be er its going to be for your team. The be er its going to be for your family.” With these encouraging words I want to e this in with SPE. You see, within these SPE walls is the prac ce field. This is where you gain knowledge from listening to presenta ons, reading SPE papers, a ending study group mee ngs, networking and conversa ng about what’s going on in other parts of the business or work you’re not familiar with. So, when it comes me for that need to boost your company, give back to the community, help your family, or take a higher posi on you have that knowledge because you kept making plays. I want to encourage that your first play that you make this year is when you are si ng down with your manager or wri ng down your own about performance goals for the year, you make SPE one of those goals. No one company holds all the answers. Gain exposure to new ways of thinking and approaches to problem solving by a ending SPE mee ngs.

CHAIRMAN’S CORNER
As part of the vision for 2025 SPE Permian Basin Sec on will con nue its mission to deliver value. We will do that by developing as professionals and giving back to the community. We have an exci ng lineup of events planned for 2025 that I am thrilled to share with you in the upcoming months. One of the highlights will be a visit from our North American Regional Director, Carlos Torres. We are currently working on the scheduling and will confirm the details soon, but we an cipate this event to take place in March. This will be a fantas c opportunity to engage with one of our esteemed leaders and gain valuable insights.
Upcoming Events
Jan 21st : General Sec on Mee ng, Conoco Phillips presents Cody Douglas Comple ons Field Superintendent, "A Process for Evalua ng and Op mizing Frac Plug Performance".

Lastly, I wanted to express excitement for our Scholarship Applica on! The scholarship applica on for SPE Permian Basin is now open. This opportunity is available to students who are interested in pursuing a career in the Oil and Gas industry. It's important to note that applicants do not need to be majoring in Petroleum Engineering to qualify. We encourage all eligible students to apply and take advantage of this ini a ve to support the next genera on of industry leaders.
Thank you for your con nued dedica on and enthusiasm. Let's make this year one of success and growth.

The SPE Texas Tech University Student Chapter had a remarkable fall semester, filled with impac ul events and opportuni es for members.
This semester, SPE, with the help of the SPE Permian Basin Sec on, hosted the Clay Shoot fundraiser, held at Jake’s Clays in Midland, which was a tremendous success.
The SPE TTU Student Chapter extends hear elt gra tude to its sponsors IO Chem, Diamondback Energy, Flowco, Renegade Wireline, DOC Energy Services, Innovex, BP Supply and Workstrings for their generous support in making the Clay Shoot fundraiser a success.
Midland’s 30th Annual CO2 Conference - Recap
The Midland-based CO2 Conference, held each year in early December for the last 30 years, has concluded another successful four-day event by promo ng the expanding world of CO2-related projects, and by presen ng prac cal CO2 solu ons and carefully selected topics and speakers.
The CO2 Conference has always been dedicated to educa on and transferring the vast experience of the Permian Basin in the many CO2-related technologies and has been doing it for a very long me. The analog of CO2 waste injec on to large volume water disposal was a prac cal theme this year. We were the first venue and con nue to emphasize the ‘incidental’ storage of CO2 occurring during CO2 EOR.
Keynoters for this year included the architect of the widely referenced 45Q Federal Tax Credits – assistant secretary of the US DOE’s Fossil Energy and Carbon Management Office, the honorable Brad Crabtree. Also included was Chuck McConnell, former assistant secretary and director of DOE’s Fossil Energy Office and current execu ve director of the Center for Carbon Management in Energy at the University of Houston, who gave his view on the future of CO2, especially in what he calls the heavily advantaged Permian Basin.
A special theme featured in 2024 related to what some call CO2 capture and geological disposal, aka CCS. When capturing and injec ng large volumes of dense
J 2025-I 236
phase CO2, the growing new CCS industry will likely see the same challenges as witnessed to its very best analog, the large volume water disposal on-going in the Permian Basin.
When the target injec on forma ons are deep, concerns of induced seismicity rise. The origins and processes are seeing wide interest and con nued study. Regulators are forced to react with delinea on of seismic response areas and applying some restric ons on injec on pressures and volumes.
Also, when companies shi to shallow forma on disposal, they must react to new issues and to the degree that the new water sub-industry is being forced into changing their business plans. Such concerns will likely be coming with CCS as the very large volumes of captured, dense phase CO2 are injected. A whole session on Wednesday, December 11, was devoted to this set of cri cal issues. Go to h ps:// co2confereOvernce.net/special-sessions/ for presenta on slides.
Some have asked why a CO2 Conference in Midland? The first reason is that we are located in an area with 70 CO2 injec on projects that have been ac ve for as many as 50 years The second reason is that a large por on of the personnel with experience fielding CO2 projects are here, and their exper se is badly needed for the expanding numbers of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects being considered around the world.
It’s this access to Midland’s CO2 projects, field experience and the inclusion of a field trip that a racts the CO2 leaders in the industry – whether they are working projects for carbon capture and storage or the case histories of CO2 injec on and oil produc on in enhanced oil recovery (EOR). This year the Conference field trip was blessed with two stops and detailed briefings from Permian Deep Rock Oil Company at their Claydesta loca on and Occidental’s South Cur s Ranch training, produc on, and impressive water processing facili es.
CO2 Conference
We like to say the conference is all about CO2, i.e., its capture and its injec on into reservoirs with and without oil produc on. The a endees like to say, in a very factual manner, that due to the unavoidable, and now important incidental storage of CO2 in a flood, the CO2 Conference not only encourages CO2 emissions capture, but also, because of geological storage, promotes a very low or carbon neutral oil that is produced during the storage.
Overall, this year’s conference featured exis ng CO2 projects with their successes and highlighted the ongoing and future field prac ces that are needing ‘tweaks’ or, occasionally, overhauls to new procedures. The conference con nues to a ract a endees throughout the US and interna onally.
A endees from 4 countries and 20 States were present to network and view the expert talks at the 30th Annual 2024 CO2 Conference.
To view the full CO2 Conference’s 2024 agenda and to download pos ngs of key presenta ons, go to www.co2conference.net.
