To my fellow SPE Permian Basin Sec on members, With 2023 coming to a close and the holiday season upon us, it’s naturally a me to reflect on the year and spend quality me with family and friends. I always enjoy how the office cha er turns into exci ng tales of people’s upcoming travels and sharing holiday tradi ons. One holiday tradi on I look forward to in my large Cajun family is my grandma’s epic stocking wall. Over the past 65 years, my grandma has hand sewn every single person in the family a unique red or green stocking and hung them on the living room wall. It currently holds 56 stockings and has expanded to the fireplace mantle as you can see in the photo below.

As is tradi on with the SPE Permian Basin Sec on, we’ll be hos ng our Ugly Christmas Sweater Party and CASA toy drive on Tuesday, December 5th from 5:30 – 7:30pm at the Petroleum Club. Make sure to bring your A game because there will be a prize for best dressed as well as a raffle prize for those that partake in the toy drive. To wrap up the year, on the technical luncheon front, the Reservoir study group will be hos ng Darryl Tompkins, CTO & Co-Founder of Revo Tes ng Technologies, who will be presen ng on Produc on Analysis and Forecas ng in Unconven onal Reservoirs u lizing ini al produc on data. This event will be held on Thursday, December 7th from 11:30am – 1:00pm at ConocoPhillips’ conference room. The last Reservoir Study Group discussion was a packed room, so I recommend registering ahead of me (see pg. 10). I’d be remiss if I didn’t also men on the CO2 Conference coming up the first week of December (details can be found star ng on page 20). The SPE Permian Basin Sec on and the CO2 Conference Commi ee have worked in close partnership for nearly three decades. The conference con nues to significantly contribute to the sec on’s scholarship fund. Please a end if your schedule permits for a mely conversa on around the capture, transport, injec on, and storage of CO2. I’ve always heard posi ve reviews about this local conference and hope to make some of it myself this year. TECHNICAL TOUR Permian Basin Ar ficial Li Forum: An Audience Perspec ve By: Forum A endee
The Permian Basin Ar ficial Li Forum held its annual 2-day event on November 7-8. The first day’s focus was on ESPs (Electric Submersible Pumps) and Gas Li . The second day consisted of a sole focus on Rod Pumps. What’s always interes ng and exci ng to see here at the Ar ficial Li Forum is the latest technology from vendors presen ng technical aspects of how they can help operators solve their problems. Presenters were cau oned to s ck to technical aspects and not deliver sales-type presenta ons - everyone stuck to the rules! The excitement didn’t stop there as 40% of the presenta ons contained deployed case studies with operators presen ng and sharing results. From ques ons delivered in the room, the audience developed an understanding of other ongoing issues in the Permian, along with offered advice and experiences from other companies. The shared energy at this event is highly regarded.
Presenta on learnings and observa ons from an audience perspec ve: Brandon Van Huss from Q2 ALS brought a “back to basics” themed lecture on handling pump card interpreta on and addressing Rod Pump set points to get the most out of your wells. One area of interest was pump-off set points and se ng these to 10 strokes. This allows for the well to truly register a pumped off state and not shut down prematurely. Some operators see increased producon with this method. Carter Copeland with Mineral Technologies had a very interes ng trial with cathodic protec on installa on within the tubing of the wellbore. Installing a “jacket” sacrificial anode to migrate corrosion to a component that will feel the impact without causing a failure to the tubing string. Early stages of trials are s ll ongoing. Anthony Allison and Courtney Richardson with Oxy shared a very technical presenta on on EMI (Electromagne c Induc on) Scanning Tubing at the Wellhead. They discussed Magne c Flux Leakage (the most common technology used for wellhead scanning. It’s a method which uses an electromagne c non-destruc ve tes ng technique to detect corrosion and pi ng. In their case study they compared two types of wellhead scanning equipment to an in-plant inspec on. The in-plant inspec on consistently detected more flaws and wall loss on most of the test wells. The main drawback to performing an in-plant inspec on is the logis cs, me, and expense. Some of the findings included portable tes ng calibra on was found not to be performed with a reference standard. Along with when calibra on is done, ming is key. Generally, right before a scan is be er than days before your job (where you have increased risk of falling out of spec). You can catch a very similar talk by the same presenters at the next SPE General Sec on Mee ng on January 16 at the Midland Petroleum Club.
Lastly it was amazing to see students from UTPB in a endance helping on the event and also to be there learning and broadening their knowledge of the Oil Industry.
