Welcome to the April 2024 issue of the Pipeline – the 9th newsle er edi on of this term and 229th published edi on in the Permian Basin SPE Chapter’s history. It is hard to believe spring me is upon us, which means the Board is beginning to wrap up the current term and prepare for the upcoming term. The last official Board of Directors mee ng of the 2023-2024 term was a jam-packed agenda because there is no slowdown of ac vity this coming month of April. The en re community of SPE officers and study group commi ees have con nued to work hard to build out a strong lineup of events for members this upcoming month. From topics covering Permian explora on and appraisal zones, to well interference, to methane emission management, the team has cul vated a range of per nent lunch & learn opportuni es for all of you.

On April 4th, Kieran Lynn, a so ware engineer at Project Canary, will be presen ng to the Data Analy cs Study Group on advanced data analy c solu ons to properly manage methane emissions. On April 11th over lunch me, the Reservoir Study Group will be hos ng another knock out speaker, Ma as Carlsen, General Manager at Whitson. He will present on how to u lize mul phase flowing material balance techniques to quan fy well interference. This will be a great technical discussion to be a part of, especially if you work in the field of reservoir engineering, with tangible take-aways that can add value to your day job.

On Friday, April 12th , we’ll be hos ng our annual clay shoot event, which is one of the chapter’s main fundraising avenues for the scholarship program. Please sign up a team, sponsor a gun board or come volunteer with the chapter. There are countless ways to get involved. All necessary details are available on the TicketSpice registra on page which can be found on the flier circula ng on social media, your email inbox, and later in this newsle er.

On April 16th, the sec on will be hos ng Jennifer McNally, Senior Research Analyst at Wood Mackenzie, who will be facilita ng a mely conversa on on the explora on and appraisal (E&A) process for Permian operators, compe tor analysis in that space, and why it has become more relevant in the current state of the industry a er a record-breaking year of consolida on. Wood Mackenzie’s presenta ons to our chapter always yield high turnouts and interes ng macro environment conversa on. This one will be no different. Make me in your schedule over lunch to swing by the Petroleum Club and learn about a current hot topic in industry.

CHAIRMAN’S CORNER

The finale of the term will be the Southwestern North America Regional Awards Banquet on Thursday, May 9th at 6:00pm at the Midland Petroleum Club. We will host dozens of high school and college students, their families, scholarship donors, local leaders and SPE officers in celebra on of SPE member and student accomplishments. For those unfamiliar, SPE Professional Chapters worldwide are broken out into regions. The Permian Basin Chapter, along with several others, are a part of the Southwestern North America region and support two local student SPE Chapters – UTPB and TTU. Tradi onally, the Permian Basin Chapter has hosted the region’s awards banquet and members of neighboring sec ons are invited to a end.

To provide further context to the banquet, over the past few months, SPE members within the region have been nominated by their peers for their excep onal contribu ons to SPE over a range of service, leadership and technical discipline-oriented awards. During the banquet, a variety of regional awards will be presented to recipients, as well as a few local SPE Permian Basin sec on awards. Furthermore, the Chapter will handout numerous scholarships to deserving students that have applied over the past couple of months. The scholarship recipients are always impressive students. It is a delight each year to meet them, hear more of their story and meet their proud families. We are all collec vely helping to fuel the next genera on in the oil and gas industry!

We are fortunate to be hos ng two keynote speakers at this year’s awards banquet: the Mayor of Midland, Mrs. Lori Blong, and the SPE Interna onal President, Mr. Terry Palisch. It will be a fun evening filled with live music, dinner, drinks, and networking. Bring your spouse for a semi-nerdy date night, invite a friend or coerce a coworker to be social for a night and I guarantee you’ll meet someone new and have a good me. We all do a LOT day to day and o en don’t take the me to celebrate where we’re at and what we’ve accomplished. I have no doubt we will finish strong as a Chapter this term and have even more to celebrate in a months’ me. Please see details on the registra on page and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any ques ons. We also have table sponsorship opportuni es available if you and your company are interested. I will see you all there!

Keep an eye on your email inbox and LinkedIn feed for event updates and registra on details. As always, if you would like to sponsor, collaborate, or provide feedback, you can connect with us at spepb@outlook.com. Thank you for your con nued support of the Permian Basin Chapter. Cheers,
