Behind Closed Doors
B GODWIN
Speos - Magnum 2022 -2023
This is a view behind closed doors in a middle class American suburb during a raging drug epidemic, a family portrait of generational trauma and addiction over a 34 year period. In 2020, 93,655 people died of drug overdoses in the United States, more than in any other one-year period in history. That same year my sister died from drug and alcohol use. My mother is an opioid addict and will predictably be part of the overdose statistics for 2023. My family, the same as millions of other families, is a nameless casualty of this ongoing public health crisis.
This is our story.
2813 Park Avenue, Wilmington, NC, USA
My name is B Godwin, I’m an American travel and documentary photographer currently based in Paris, France. After a career in humanitarian work I chose to pursue creative storytelling through photography as a means to recognize human resilience in adversity. I enjoy meeting people, hearing their stories and photographing that moment of connection.
Recent personal projects have included Behind Closed Doors which explores generational drug addiction in the U.S., Spirit of the Mother Road, Life on Route 66, and Cataphiles and the Urbex Movement in Paris. I will return to my home base of Asheville, NC later this fall.
