Publisher’s LETTER A Coincidence that Words and Worlds are only separated by a lonely L?

T

here's an old Irish proverb that I really like: "A tune is more lasting than the song of the birds, and a word more lasting than the wealth of the world." Rather profound, yes?

I like words, a lot. They are the building blocks of how we communicate to the world. I appreciate all of them immensely, and especially the ones that unlock an infinite number of possibilities.

Imagine, just for a moment, our world... without words. Well, right off the top I'm thinking that Spencer would be a very pretty picture book.

But would that be enough to quench the thirst of our audience?

I don't think so.

That's why I encourage you to read the articles in this issue, and not just look at the pictures. The articles are enlightening, exciting, and fun. I have my favourites, like Steve Pryce's articles on Divine Decadence and A.rtificial I.mmortality. And, of course, Heide von Palleske's article on "Painting with Words." I've always been a BIG Burt Reynolds fan, so I'll be reading Stephen Wallis's story on "Defining Moments" many times. Alyssa Rubino, NFT BAZL, Broken Cage Gallery... and so many more!

By now I'm hoping that you're curious about the letter "L" between word and world - does it represent Life? Love? Something else to you?!

For all of my family and friends out there, you would realize (and I don't apologize for it!) that I'd be making this closing statement:

FUN FACTS ABOUT CANADIAN INVENTIONS Here's a bit of trivia for our Spencer readers. Over the years, Canadian ingenuity has shone brightly on the world stage. Let's start with Peanut Butter, created in 1884 by Canadian pharmacist Marcellus Gilmore Edson. And how about basketball? Yes, invented by Canadian James Naismith in 1891. Imagine the world without telephones! Scottish-born and immigrant to Canada, Alexander Graham Bell imagined it first by inventing a practical telephone in 1875 while working in Boston. Think about this the next time you paint your house: Norman Breakey invented the paint roller around 1940 in Toronto, Ontario. And we bet that you didn't know this: the ugly, yet indispensible green polyethylene garbage bag was invented by Harry Wasylyk and Larry Hansen in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1950! Are you old enough to remember pagers? Invented by Alfred J. Gross, a wireless communications pioneer in Toronto, Ontario in 1949. He also invented the CB radio, the cordless telephone and shares credit for inventing the walkie-talkie with fellow Canadian Donald Hings in 1939.

A

nd yet again, Canada is home to another rising star: JADYN RYLEE. This humble teen, hailing from Toronto Canada, has exploded on the scene with her debut feature film role in Sean Penn's "Flag Day." So how did a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity happen, working alongside a highly-respected, Academy Award winner such as the brilliant Sean Penn?

First of all, Jadyn isn't new to the world of entertainment, more specifically, music. Within the past few years, she has acquired a loyal following of fans from around the world with both her cover and original songs on YouTube. At the age of 13, she produced her first album "Voice of Change" recorded in Nashville, Tennessee. Her parents, Tara and Colin, have supported Jadyn throughout her journey as a young artist. We need to mention here that her Mom and Dad don't fit the stereotype of "Stage Parents" at all. In fact, when Wanda Ryan of DOC Entertainment and I first met the family at TKFW years ago, where Jadyn was performing, my first question was: "Is Jadyn having fun? She looks like she's having a blast." Colin's response, as a protective father: 'The moment that she stops having fun, we'll move on." I really respect that. This is a family adapting well to celebrity, and all that comes with it. Her parents are total GOATS managing her career - not to be confused with farm animals, doh! "Greatest of all Time."

So there's Sean Penn, getting ready to helm another feature film, and he's drifting through the internet, just like all of us, and he discovers Jadyn trending on YouTube. And next? Right out of the blue, Penn's Casting Director contacts Tara, her Mom. The rest? Well, here we go Cannes, and the RED CARPET! I'm so happy for this incredible family. Especially considering that you never know... you may have a daughter or son considering a career in the arts. Well, this proves that dreams can (and will with a ton of work) come true.

Sean Penn takes on a double role as both director and actor in this movie, based on the true story from Jennifer Vogel's novel 'Flim Flam Man.' Penn plays the role of John Vogel, one of the most notorious counterfeiters in United States history.

ophisticated. Classy. Exuding confidence, yet down to earth. A real man's man. That was my first impression of Diogo Snow when I met up with him during our Spencer photo shoot at Toronto's luxurious, private King & Bay lounge.

I have so much respect for this guy, beyond the indisputable fact that he's an incredibly talented contemporary artist. He's making serious waves in the international art world, with the launch of his company "New World Inc.," an NFT platform creating an exclusive world-scale augmented reality experience.

SPENCER'S WORLD Diogo Neves, known by his nickname "D-Snow," is an accompished artist. His signature style of mixing urban art with a modern twist has gained him notoriety, having made pieces for celebrities such as Drake, Justin and Hailey Bieber, Thee Stallion, Sean Paul, Bad Bunny, Fetty Wap among others.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Diogo collaborated with Woodpecker Coats, a high-fashion vegan brand. His current gig? Creating 100 custom spray-painted one-of-a-kind coats, to match the Woodpeckercoats Porsche.

Stardom.

Of course, this didn't just happen overnight.

Yes, that's where Diogo is headed... actually, by my definition, that's where he's at. Deserved? Absolutely.

Diogo's journey began in Brazil, as a young boy playing the drums, piano, guitar and singing. By the age of 14 he was already creating graffiti art, tagging on the streets of São Paulo. His passion for both art and music was established.

But wait! There's a lot more...

When he arrived in Toronto, Canada at the age of 21, Diogo joined his brother, Thiago, and began working in the construction trades while playing music on the side. After some touring across Ontario, he released his first solo CD featuring hip-hop/pop at The Mod Club. He continued performing solo for several years before returning to his first passion: art.

Diogo switched from walls to canvass, attracting a lot of fans when he posted his works on Instagram. It wasn't long before offers came in to buy his artwork.

And then, the big turning point in Diogo's life: He made a very special piece for Neymar, Jr., the Brazilian footballer. When the superstar placed the painting in his Parisian home, celebrities visiting him posed in front of the painting taking selfies, posting on social media, and... BOOM! This was the catalyst that propelled Diogo into the stratosphere of the art world. Between spray painting a Ferrari (a first!) and painting a giant mural in the Picasso Mansion in Miami, he was gaining attention from curators at various galleries. Now, he's a household name for celebrity art collectors.

As if that wasn't enough, Diogo was chosen by Universal Music to create a mural, posthumously in tribute to the chart-topping rapper JuiceWrld.

Then came the Justin Bieber connection. Taking the iniative, like all good entrepreneurs, Diogo reached out to Justin Bieber's dad, Jeremy. As a result, he created pieces for both Justin and Hailey, and Jeremy.

From there, a partnership was born. Bieber Industries signed on Diogo to design their logo, and now he works with them. As a lifestyle brand, they are committed to making a difference when it comes to encouraging growth by highlighting talent, regardless of social status, gender, race or beliefs.

SPENCER'S WORLD His most impressive accomplishment?

His latest achievement, through his innate ability to connect with people is with acquiring an exclusive rolodex of artists, including musicians and other celebrities from around the world. His roster includes Max Jamali, Daniel Mazzone, Karl Wolf, Supper Buddha, Ariane Lipski, Peter Triantos, Mia Martina Anthoni Ricciardi, to name a few.

Diogo is leading the charge with his New World NFT platform. Recently acquired by Graph Blockchain Inc. for $20M, yes, that's right: $20,000,000 - a lot of zeroes.

This takes Snow into a whole new world of opportunities, beyond graffiti on Brazilian walls.

So, not just a multidisciplinary artist, necessarily struggling for his next bowl of soup, he's tackling the way that we think about the creative arts.

HANNAH ALPER Hey Spencer readers!

I am here as an 18-year-old activist, blogger, motivational speaker, author, to tell you that you have a voice and have the power, capacity, and responsibility to change the world. I am passionate about many local and global issues from education to clean water, from homelessness to women's rights, from mental health to anti-bullying and many more. But perhaps the issue I'm most passionate about is activism itself - motivating people to see that they can be activists in their own life, home, school, office, and world. From the age of nine, I have been sharing what I have learned and taken action on in hopes of inspiring others so that people say "if she can do it, I can do it too."

I have this formula - that even for those among us (myself included) that are not so great at math – can understand and use.

Issue + Gift = Change First, you find your issue. That's when you ask yourself, "what do you love? What do you deeply care about? What do you want to tell the world?" It's your spark, your passion. Then, you find your gift. We need to find something that we're good at and use that to make a difference - it can be math, science, writing, communication, and even your time and compassion.

Especially in these weird times, we need changemakers now more than ever. Scratch that, we need helpers - people that are willing to find their community and come together for a better world. That reminds me of one of my favourite quotes

by Mr. Rogers: "Find the helpers. Join the helpers. Be the helpers."

BRITTANY KRYSTANTOS Everything we know about "I Am Not Your Average Teen” author Brittany Krystantos- from her journey of battling with mental health, and depression in her teens, to turning her pain into her strength to give back, inspire and shed some light onto our youth struggling with mental illness.

“Life is about the journey, not the destination” is a powerful statement that Brittany lives by. At 23 years of age, Brittany followed a journey of self-discovery after battling with mental health in her teens, which led to writing her bestselling book and using her platform to help the younger generation.

From being muted for seven years, to now changing the world one teenager at a time, Brittany has been committed to helping young people through the program she teaches in high schools, based on the principles found in her book. Not many of us know what it’s like to live with Selective Mutism, let alone what it is: when a child, fully capable of speaking, chooses not to. Can you imagine the thoughts going through the peers, teachers, family, and friends (if there are any) of such a child, and the treatment that she/he is subsequently subjugated to?

Brittany not only survived the first seven years of her life in the silence of Selective Mutism, but thrived through it! She has converted that experience to her purpose in life. Sharing about her triumph over the past, made her an author at the age of 15, and now a youth advocate at 23. She has had many life-changing encounters from an early age, which have had a major influence on her teachings and way of living. Brittany teaches primarily from her own experience and years of studying methods to help with her mental health, teaching a practical application of a program called “Beneath And Beyond” in which she emphasizes self-love, mental health, teaching kids to cultivate positive thoughts and helping find solutions to their struggles with a holistic approach to spirituality and self-care.

Some tips and lessons that Brittany has learnt from being not your average teen and young adult: 1) You can never lose, you always win 2) If you can survive the covid-19 pandemic, you can survive anything!

3) Be yourself, don’t try to be like others, watching people's lives on social media and wanting to be like them isn’t going to make you better, it will just fill you will jealousy and unhappiness 4) Take time for yourself 5) Save save save your money 6) What you think, will come back to you, if you think positive then positivity will find you.

7) Enjoy life to the fullest, even if it means you’re stuck at home, you can still bring fun into your home by being joyful and finding things to do that makes you smile, and fill you with joy!

8) True love finds you, don’t go seeking it!

9) Any idea or dream you have, go after it and take the right steps to making it come true; entrepreneurship is about being brave, and the other half is taking the right steps to making your dream successful!!

Brittany is a young voice changing the world one teenager at a time, and if you can learn anything from her, you should learn to not give up on life!

VASILI PRANGIKOS As far back as I can remember, I have always been the happiest performing for my family and friends. As I grew older, my love for the stage has pulled me even closer and towards a career in the performing arts - dancer, singer, songwriter, and actor.

Throughout the years, I was often told that dancing was not for boys. I found myself repeatedly rejected, criticized, or worse, laughed at when I would tell others my vision and dreams of becoming a singer and actor. It was disheartening to have people around me try to discourage me, yet I learned to follow my heart. I quickly realized that people's discouragements may have everything to do with them and nothing to do with myself!

I'm blessed to be raised by parents who always encourage me to do what I love. My parents believed in me and helped me to believe in myself. My commitment, dedication and hard work continue to be fuelled by what I love most. I want to inspire others to be their authentic selves simply by being themselves and never to let anyone diminish their light. I always say, "Hold on to that light because, in the end, you're the one who controls how bright you shine!"

Vasili's confidence is captivating. He is a fun-loving artist on-the-rise who is poised to make a major impact in the entertainment industry. He is currently a member of Canada's #1 music brand the Mini Pop Kids (MPK), representing the brand in commercials, music videos, album recordings, live touring shows/press appearances, Walmart materials, and so much more! In his free time, Vasili can be found in a dance studio studying with top dance professionals or in a music studio writing and recording original music to be released on all streaming platforms. You will also be able to see Vasili on television as a supporting lead in an NBCU family musical comedy series in the near future.

My name is Camden. I am a 13-year-old musician from Ontario, Canada and I was a Mini Pop Kid for 2020/2021 MPK 18 and now I'm an alumni. Our goal as Mini Pop Kids is to provide people of all ages with family-friendly versions of today's top pop hits.

I have loved music and theatre since I could walk and talk and have always been enthusiastic about things I am truly passionate about! Whether it’s singing, dancing, acting, or writing, I have always strived to achieve my goals! As I’ve always been taught, do what makes you happy, and the rest will fall into place. I find happiness in performing and writing, and that’s where I have been my whole life.

One of my favourite quotes states, “Your dream doesn’t have an expiration date.” - Mel Robbins. I wish to continue pursuing my dreams into high school next year, as I love school, especially English class and all of the extracurriculars.

Rather than simple check or striped shirts, floral shirts don't require much else when coordinating them with the rest of your outfit. Simply pick a trouser in a colour that you see in the print and choose a casual sneaker or loafer.

EMBRACE COLOUR - Summer is the time when bright, natural sunlight enhances the colours we see. We encourage everyone to embrace bolder and brighter colours for the summer season to take advantage of the longer days. LILACS & LAVENDERS - While blues and greys dominate the menswear world as basic tones, summer is the time to inject lighter tones into your outfits. EVERGREEN - Green is a fantastic tone that many men have started to embrace. It is a unique tone that can be worn any time of the year from summer to winter. However, the true beauty behind green is that it can be paired with virtually any tone that you already pair your blue suits with.

WHITE SNEAKERS - with the rise in loungewear and the demand for comfort in the last year, many men had tucked the dress shoes in their closets aside. Sneakers have been a large part of menswear for decades now; however, we have been seeing them incorporated more and more into sartorial clothing. A clean and simple pair of minimalist white sneakers can be paired with virtually any suit or sport jacket in your wardrobe for a smart casual look.

RETURN OF THE POWER SUIT - With people slowly returning to the office, many men have had a renewed interest in dressing their best. You can only wear t-shirts and joggers for so long. For that eventual return to the office, we have been seeing a rise in proper business attire with powerful stripes and bold checks.

LOAFERS - One of the best shoes to invest in for the summer is a go to pair of loafers. While lace ups and monk straps are fantastic shoes, nothing is more practical and versatile than a great pair of slip-ons. Pair them with anything from a dressy suit, to a casual shirt and jeans seamlessly.

BREAKAWAY SUIT - Versatility has always been a key factor in deciding the right suit for somebody. Men want to know that they have multiple uses for a garment they purchase. One of our favourite concepts is the breakaway suit. A bolder patterned suit in which the jacket is styled and crafted casually so it can be separated and worn with a different pair of trousers. This means that the same jacket from the suit you wear on one day of the week can be reworn as more casually a sport jacket with jeans or a cotton trouser.

JERSEY - The demand for comfortable clothing has shot up, especially in the past year. Our answer is unique.

Imagine a suit that looks as classic as the next navy or grey suit you pass by, but it feels like your most comfortable hoodie and pair of joggers. A jersey suit is a suit that is crafted using a unique blend of cotton that allows for maximum comfort. Wear it to the office with a shirt, tie and pair of loafers or wear it on the weekends to the patio with a clean t shirt and pair of white sneakers.

CUSTOM - If there is one trend that men need to hear, it is the return of custom clothing. While stores may have racks and racks of ready to wear clothing for instant gratification, there is a unique experience associated with creating your own design from scratch. Men are rediscovering the beauty of custom and the freedom of choice and individuality that comes from it.

Carmelita's D ivine D ecadence Celebrating 50 Years in Yorkville, Canada

don’t know anything about fashion.

It didn’t make any sense at all to assign this article to me. But since no one else was available, I felt it my duty to do something better than run away. By the fourth visit, I started to have some idea of what to talk about with the owner of Divine Decadence, Carmelita Blondet. First came the planning for the photo shoot, then the photo shoot, then the follow up, then the realization that neither myself nor anyone else had

any real idea of what to write about the unique store Carmelita has helmed for over thirty years.

It’s difficult to describe what is so special about Divine Decadence. There can’t be many stores in the world with a $35,000 dress on display, or stock sourced over the course of thirty years, from all around the world, each item on an individual basis. Divine Decadence knows of none. My guess 44

is that there are, perhaps, five such stores around the world; it’s interesting to speculate on just how small the number of competitors might be, and pertinent to suggest they might be better perceived as colleagues rather than competitors. If you know of anyplace like this, we’d like to know about it.

In search of an adequate moniker, we settled briefly on “Vintage Couture Boutique,” and then decided that would normally be interpreted as the opposite of what is to be found on the second floor of Cumberland Street, in the heart of Yorkville, Toronto. Then we brought in the possibility of “Bielleza Eterno,” translating roughly as ‘eternal, elegant 45 Spencer

SPENCER STYLE beauty’ and then agreed we just couldn’t put our fingers on a solution in any of the languages familiar to us. Divine Decadence is a very long way from what has become known as a vintage store, or as a boutique. For now, I’m going to label the store a gallery of sartorial art, and Carmelita its curator.

Initially located on Toronto’s Charles Street, Carmelita relocated the store into the Manulife Centre shortly after she purchased the business. A few years later, the management of said building lost their minds and actively sought to displace the electric diaspora of small and specialist store then resident. Since she’s no

Carmelita’s approach to life, she maintains, is down to a decision to be her true self and pursue her vision of a business in timeless, classic clothing. fool, Carmelita relocated to Yorkville’s Cumberland Street, where her boutique is still to be found. Looking down from her second-story window, you can tell the business has found a comfortable home.

Carmelita’s children grew up at the store as much as home. Fond, rich memories abound across the generations, and Carmelita assures me that she was absolutely right to pursue her dream, and content she has achieved it. Arriving in Canada as a newlywed, nineteen year old, she worked for a number of businesses before buying Divine Decadence to make into her own, largely on the advice of a sympathetic employer who understood what she shared of her ambition. Thirty or so years later, she has the business she wanted, the memories she sought, and a family who grew up with the business, usually present in the store. She laughs at the suggestion that compromises were necessary to achieve her happiness… If more could have been had financially, it wasn’t missed. The freedom and self-actualization her path brought were far more valuable, and in the end, passion always survives, far beyond the duration of avarice. Carmelita’s approach to life, she maintains, is down to a decision to be her true self and pursue her vision of a business in timeless, classic clothing. A product of Peruvian intelligentsia, the impressive breadth of her perspective on the world impresses.

I have to ask whether Lady Gaga is her favourite customer. The answer indicates just how much she adored the creative force who came to visit one day, and as I expected, that she’s just one of the favourites; it’s clearly close competition, in particular with the young ladies who have come in for their first couture dress.

The Gold Petite-Purse A combined compact and cigarette-case, this gorgeous item could only have been made in Argentina. Carmelita found it herself in Buenos Aires, long after its construction sometime in the 1940s. $1500.

THE BLACK PETITE-PURSE Dating from 1953, this hand-loomed item was found in Lago di Garda on a trip to Italy. $700 Designed by Trini, its needle-point surfaces were made by the Arundo del Statin family business; for over two hundred years, they have weaved and manufactured fine items. Most likely made one of a few dozen items, every one unique, including its fuschia Scarpelli silk lining.

aragon is the first & only International Trophy Footwear Design Maison in the world. Born in the city of Milan, Italy, in the year 2016.

sell them in local barbershops, beauty salons, and door to door. It didn't take long for him to build a network of high-end clients that demanded his luxury designer goods. His business grew so much that Juan says he literally became the "Uber of Fashion Kid" within the city of Toronto.

Juan Sebastian was born in Cali, Colombia. At the age of 5 his family immigrated to Miami, Florida. When he turned 15 years old, his parents decided to move again looking for a better future to the city of Toronto, Canada. Starting from square one in the year 2008, Juan Sebastian’s family arrived at a family shelter in the city of Mississauga, Ontario — A moment and place of which he claims to be the origin of his destiny.

Not surprisingly, as a young, entrepreneur, Juan Sebastian studied International Business at the University of Ottawa. While being abroad in Milan for his international exchange semester, Juan had an epiphany that allowed him to connect his life-long experiences into one single passion: Designing Luxury Trophy Footwear & Deliverin g Unique Experiences.

One day across from that family shelter, Juan Sebastian and his parents found a store that sold designer garments such as Valentino at a discounted price. Juan began to purchase these designer pieces and started to

While being inspired abroad in one of the world’s most influential fashion cities, to begin, Juan drew some rough sketches of shoes. He wanted to start his luxury fashion Maison from the ground up. “I didn't know how to draw a shoe lace,” says Juan. He presented those drawings to his business professor in Italy, Fabio Papa, who later on introduced him to some of the world’s most prestigious footwear manufacturing facilities in Italy.

“Jaragon is an aspirational brand,” says Juan Sebastian.

“I want to give people a platform, through my brand, to share their life stories of persistence, and sacrifices made, in order to achieve success. My logo is an 'A' shaped Arch of Triumph, which allows people to identify the brand from a distance, and at the same time feel inspired by the unique stories expressed through the particular colours and taste of each Jaragon Trophy withholder.”

A.RTIFICIAL I.MMORTALITY Ann Shin’s latest documentary, ‘A.RTIFICIAL I.MMORTALITY’, has already seen success at this year’s HotDocs festival, and will be widely available in autumn, 2021.

humans could ultimately transcend the mortal, replicating their consciousness in a computer world, perhaps even adding a robotic and labgrown physical entity to fully achieve physical immortality on earth.

n established documentary filmmaker, Ann recently launched her first novel, “The Last Exiles”, inspired by her previous documentary illustrating the flight of North Korean refugees through China. She is based in Toronto, working with a like-minded team at Fathom Films. Ann leads us through the history of her research into the notion of perpetual life, airing the representations and opinions of others without bias towards any conclusions of her own. She appears as herself, talking to those she met on her journey through the subject matter.

It’s an appealing notion, but I couldn’t help thinking that the process of beta-testing the migration process would necessarily involve migrating the consciousness of the created representation of the self would need to be evaluated by migrating its experience of its own life back into its progenitor. Will the clone be able to run multiple logical and emotional programs simultaneously, some relating to ongoing interface events and others to development of the inner self in the processing of memories and thoughts of the future, syncing them at will and randomly, and then interfacing the experience of the automaton back

First, she explains her original motivation. A critical birthday, the recent loss of a parent, and the gradual, ongoing loss of the other one to dementia invoked the heightened awareness of mortality that seems to be a rite of passage for us all. Most likely those pesky replicants on the overseas servers, running amok with the new friends they’ve made for themselves.

And it’s always a good idea to back up your data, so if there are multiple entities of me running around, the issues around whether this is a real replication of a human consciousness grow exponentially. Given that science has established memories are retained as electro-chemical ciphers, his points seems plausible. It has me thinking about whether our minds are continuously looking for new memories, whether they replicate them physically, and whether the process involved uses an algorithm akin to the magic-number logic that database systems use to look for available recording space. I’m going to try to avoid thinking about that in future, and so should you.

Ann visits with a guru who’s delighted with the avatar built to interface with his clientele, dispensing simple solutions to simple questions the interface can be programmed to accommodate. Artificial intelligence? More like hiding from intelligence in an artificial delusion.

Next step is the Krembil NeuroScience Centre. I was a lot more confident in the words of their researcher.

You can see it’s difficult for him not to laugh at the suggestion of transferring human consciousness into a computer; he is the only person Ann speaks to who knows enough about his subject matter to know that he knows very little about it.

His explanation of how the mind polishes memories in their recall and subsequent re-encodement for storage is illuminating, and you have to be paying attention to notice his fleeting referral to the reality that his profession uses analysis of memory and recall to learn about the mind, and bypass the reality he

This writer worked for twenty years as a computer programmer and systems analyst. In all that time, I never once met anyone I would have any confidence at all in entrusting with the management on a database of my consciousness and persona. Or anyone elses, for that matter, including their own.

Ann collects a box full of computer files, images and videos to be collated into a mindful that can represent her through an avatar. It’s quite a process to connect the files in some manner as a database that her avatar can use to bring particular files up in response to predictable questions. A good deal later, she shows the results to her children. They’re initially shocked by the avatar’s resemblance to their mothers’ appearance and actions, but see through it all within seconds.

Should you? I suppose I could have recorded a journey with my parents, home from my home in London to theirs on the Scottish Borders. A camera might have captured our stupendous progress north, almost entirely above one hundred miles an hour, and our conversations about the past, present, and future, but it would not have caught even a nuance of their absolute confidence in the man whose development they had initially set in motion, the unspoken hopes for the future and anticipation at the questions yet to develop. Life is so much more than we might ever record, and the most profound moments leave no trace behind, except within us and between the closest. Do you really want to be remembered for what you might manage to blurt out?

For them, the avatar is clearly nothing more than a superior version of Siri, a pretty tool to steer the user to access computer files. How could it possibly compare to being twelve, thinking a hundred thoughts simultaneously? They take the avatar in their stride, the way kids always absorb the new.

How could their experience of life in that moment ever be recorded, for the mindfile, so much of it going on inside, just for them?

Even if we were somehow to record every moment of our lives in some way adequate to provide a diary, it would be from the outside alone, completely missing the things unsaid and not visibly responded to usually the most profound things in life. How could a you ever record the moment you realise you’re talking to the one & only, whose very presence changes everything? Would that camera catch you grasp the reality that way the most important thing in life is the next thing she says, not even what she says but the way she says it? Even if you could capture the

Photo Credit: Stephen Chung engaging to see so many people talking about Artificial Intelligence, none of them sharing any real, common understanding of the term; one hundred and fifty-five years after Alice first met him, the Mad Hatter’s assertion that ‘words mean whatever I want them to mean’ is alive and well in the world of IT, and my limited experience of working in Switzerland indicates that’s true for German and French languages too. The documentary ventures into the concept of artificial intelligence becoming an entity unto itself, in conflict with humanity, and that has me thinking about the reality that “artificial intelligence” is never going to rise above the neuroses and limitations of the programmers writing the logic - and if the coding is handed over to computers, they’ll disseminate the evidence of that exponentially. I’m not worried about Artificial Intelligence destroying the world. I’m worried about Artificial Stupidity combining with the analog version to achieve the same end in some vainglorious search to assuage the delusions of a few.

And would it help scholars finally establish whether it was merely sophisticated entertainment to encourage children to develop thinking processes for themselves, or also biting social satire on the Disraeli administration. If you really must inflict your photos and videos on others, a few hours of work with Explorer or Finder, renaming files, adding comments & tags, and so on will be a lot more cost-effective than paying someone else to do it. ShiftClick, and Control-Click, are the magic words to group your files for update, and take this step towards immortality.

Should you see the movie? Yes, not least because you might disagree with my evisceration of the subject matter, and I may very well do so myself in due course of time. Ann’s filmmaking is well worth seeing, and she presents the material for the viewer to form their own opinion. You may find the “trans-humanist church” as hilarious as I did, watching people old enough to be allowed to vote and drive cars substitute their misunderstanding of technology for the old-fashioned invisible, omnipotent friend in the sky in the futile search to cheat death. It was

My hope is that Ann’s documentary will be widely seen, and deeply considered. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I will be seeing her next film, too. Still, I would have been unable to refrain

Photo credit: Iris Ng from including a reference to the line “Pinnochio is broken, its strings are cut.” Twenty years after science fiction explored the concept of representing humanity within a machine, the world has learnt nothing about the absurdity of such a proposal, nothing about just how far the technology is from any possibility of addressing it, and how little we know about ourselves, those around us, human thought and emotion, and the limitations and possibilities of human language. If enough people pay enough attention to this documentary, it might provoke them to begin thinking about such things, rather than the shallow avoidance of thought that is the usual use of technology. Perhaps this movie, and the technologies it portrays, may lead in time to a deeper understanding of what it is to be human. The avatars that Ann’s children take in their stride may improve access to information in ways that expand may actually function productively - as the unspoken definition of what literacy and memorabilia amounts to expands to include the digital archives we already build, the interface they constitute may enable humanity to better understand ourselves. In time, these ludicrous proposals of artificial immortality and artificial life might even lead to better lives for our descendants.

Sit down and watch the movie and form your own opinion. Don’t pay any attention to mine. Think for yourself.

PAINTING WITH WORDS

If someone could write such beautiful words, then I had no choice than to be an actor so that I could be a conduit between the written word and those who should hear the written word.

It was the play ‘Antigone’ that changed my life.

Fifteen years old, in a cast iron bathtub in an old farmhouse in rural Ontario, happily away from the noise of my many siblings. And there, reading Antigone for the first time, I had a lifechanging epiphany.

I was never meant for the stage, as much as I love the classics. The interior thought process has always meant too much to me. The stage requires a largerthan-life performance. Emotions and movements are exaggerated in order to reach the back row. And while the stage is about ritual, film is about alchemy. It is intimate, honest, and personal in performance and storytelling. A medium that requires honesty and truth. The camera catches every lie.

t was never about fame, attention or notoriety.

It was always about the word and the images that words can paint. I have always been a great admirer of visual arts, in fact if there is one leitmotif throughout my writing, it has to be the inclusion of visual arts or the visual artist. Full disclosure, I cannot even draw a stick man. And so, instead, there exists in me the desire to paint with words.

ARTS & CULTURE I have for my entire life, at least since third grade, been an actor and a writer. But in the end what I am really? I am storyteller. Sometimes in an interpretive way and sometimes in a generative way but, either way, through fiction I endeavor to expose the truth...

Painting with words.

When I was asked to write a blog about being an actor, and how that affected the writing of ‘Two White Queens and the One-Eyed Jack,’ I was somewhat miffed. Why not ask about my life experiences and how they translated into the imagery in the novel? After all, there are no actors as characters in ‘Two White Queens and the One-Eyed Jack!’ I felt that my life as an actor and as a writer were complimentary, but quite separate. Then, as I reflected, I started to draw some uncanny connections. As I said, I am a film actor. As an film-actor, I am an interpretive artist working in the field of storytelling.

If film were a painting then an actor, or the character the actor plays, is neither the painting nor the painter, but rather one of the paint colours. As I writer I am a generative artist, also in the art of storytelling but, instead of the paint, I become the painter.

P.S. – And of course, there is a nod to ‘Antigone’ in ‘Two White Queens and the One-Eyed Jack.’

A film actor often is shot out of sequence.

What you see may be a linear story, but it is not linear for the actor. And so from the start of the shoot to the end, you wear that character all day, ready to call upon any moment of that character’s existence. The camera penetrates past the flesh in order to capture the very thoughts of the character. Film-acting takes place in the mind, in the thoughts behind the eyes. When I write, I get to penetrate the flesh of my characters and live in their thoughts. See beyond what the characters do and say to reveal the workings of their minds.

The Forward Book Review

Although acting is not represented in the novel, the camera is. Jack loses his eye and is monocular but, when he takes up photography, naming his single lensed friend Cyclops, he is able to see things in a more in-depth fashion.

And in the end, although I did not become an actor in order to be seen, this book is about sight. One character makes glass eyes, another is a visual artist, a middle-aged women feels invisible to her family, and a younger woman’s truth is not seen by those closest to her. And, of course, Jack loses one of his eye and the Two White Queens, identical twin girls with albinism, have only 30% sight and, yet, they see far more of the world than their contemporaries.

DEFINING

MOMENTS

Defining Moments is a highly comedic film about that one single moment in time that changes you from who you were to who you'll be.

I

t’s been 17 years since I wrote this funny, unique little script called Defining Moments. Literally, I completed it over a period of six days. Tucked deep into my Sunset Blvd office. Barely eating. Remembering little but the fact that my fingers would cramp up from the constant tap-tapping. Only leaving the office to go to my apartment two hundred yards away for the odd shower. Six days, little sleep and I never had a rewrite.

No second draft. It was almost like I was channeling the story. The words poured out of me in a way that even now surprises me. A unique moment in time. Like a meteor passing overhead. There and then gone...

along the way. Her passing mirroring one of the main characters in the story.

I based the script on something my mother said about death. Not long before her passing. The pure depth of her comment stirred my creative juices and so I wrote this funny, sad, unusual piece with an urgent purpose. How little did I know that it would take so long to complete the journey. Or how painful it would be

And finally, as you all know, Burt Reynolds became our final and only Chester. We sadly have the honour of being his final film. I’m not sure that I’ve ever had a script that was so well loved that had so much trouble in making it to the screen. But, life as you know tends to go in the direction it wants you to whether you like

Over the years, the film has had a tremendous amount of tragedy attached to it. Peter O’Toole, Michael Clarke Duncan, Mickey Rooney were all attached to be in the film before their deaths. We thought we had Leslie Nielsen before he died and we had Jerry Lewis literally about to board a plane before becoming ill and passing away a few weeks after. One of our producers Roy Collavino and Canadian acting great Sean McCann both passed away shortly after filming was completed.

Burt Reynolds with Director Stephen Wallis There are moments that I’ll always remember.

From Peter O’Toole reading the script while at the pyramids and then signing his contract while commandeering a boat in the Mediterranean to Jerry Lewis saying that it was one of the most beautiful scripts that he ever read. Or meeting Burt Reynolds every morning as we were shooting by getting a kiss and a pat on my cheek with a “What are we doing today, Chief?” To having my long time hockey buddy Christian McKenna in the film to having some of my best friends in the business like Polly Shannon, Sienna Guillory, Shawn Roberts being there as we make yet another film. To having one of my favourite people, Tammy Blanchard fulfilling a promise to each other from ten years before about doing this film together no matter what. And working again with such wonderfully sweet and crazily talented people like Eric Peterson, Graham Greene and Ron James who bring joy to every film set to bringing on

it or not. You can forgive me if at times we all didn’t think we were cursed. It seemed like there was always a roadblock or something that came up that made it difficult for us to get it made or to get it finished.

I think we forget that sometimes you really have to work at life to be successful. Whether that’s in your job or your kids or as in my case with my art. No one ever promises you a simple journey. Or that it will all work out as perfectly as you see it when you start. I vividly remember so many of my friends and family telling me how foolish it was for me to try to something this crazy with my life. To follow the dream even when the dream seemed more likely to be a nightmare. Remembering the reaction of people I knew when I failed at moving forward sometimes. The glee they somehow got in the “I told you so.” I know that they probably didn’t mean it. I understand that most people never understand the drive of people in the arts to be seen and heard. I get that. I know that over the years many of the naysayers became my biggest supporters. And for that I’ll be forever grateful. Without an army of people dreams rarely happen. I am so glad that so many people I grew up with are involved in the film. From producers to actors to shooting in my home town. When the journey is over, it’s humbling to look back at all the good that happened along the way. It’s important to always look back with clear eyes and see what you achieved and more importantly, who you achieved it with.

FILM & TELEVISION so many younger actors like Connor, Kelly and Katie who showed so much promise in their journey as actors.

We sometimes forget that life is a journey. No two are ever alike.

But, the destination is only part of it. And it’s important to always remember that. The lessons along the way are the most important part of that journey. Without it, there is little value. There’s little real achievement without struggle. Hard to remember, but it’s important to do so.

There are too many people to thank in regards to the film.

Whether that’s crew, cast or our investors. For those who were there, you were all so important.

Without you, the journey wouldn’t have been completed. I thank you for the gift you gave me. Whether you realized that you gave me one at all.

reaking into the music industry at a young age, Alyssa released her first single “Keep on Dancing” in 2011. The single quickly climbed its way up the charts and peaked number 6 on the Billboard Dance charts just at the age of 12. Alyssa was deemed the youngest Canadian to grace the cover of Billboard Magazine and appeared in J-14, Twist, M magazine and Cashbox.

Alyssa found herself quickly emerging as a young recording artist and made traction with her music video “Keep On Dancing” in Germany, Austria, Switzerland. She also performed at J-14’s InTune concert in NYC with teen stars Grayson Chance and Allstar Weekend. Attending the Grammy Awards and Juno Awards, she has shared the Red Carpet with major celebrities.

ARTS & CULTURE unhappiness. It didn’t matter what I had accomplished or pursued, nothing fulfilled me the way that music did. I missed performing for people, spending hours and hours in the studio and being able to do what I loved, every single day.

Joseph Edward Schur: How old were you when you decided to pursue music as a profession?

Alyssa Rubino: I have been influenced by music my entire life. Growing up, my father was in the music industry which definitely molded my love for music.

I was 4 years old when I first entered a studio and actually recorded a song. I was visiting my dad at work, but I knew I wanted to sing and fell in love with it from there. Beginning at the young age of 5 years old, I began taking professional vocal lessons.

This encouraged me to now, at 23 years old, begin pursuing music as my full time profession, once again.

What’s the best advice you have ever received from a musician or producer?

At 10 years old I started experimenting in the studio and immediately felt comfortable. It felt like home at such a young age. It was that summer that I turned to my dad and said “I want to go into the studio and make my own song.”

The best advice I have ever received was to stay true to who I am as an artist and to always be authentic. For me, it’s all about allowing my music to reflect what I truly feel and believe in.

In 2010, I released my first single “Keep on Dancing” which gained recognition and I began getting approached by reputable executives in the industry. In 2011, I was featured in Billboard magazine and graced the front cover. During this time I had got on stage for many live performances, one being in NYC for the J-14 Intune concert.

Many artists and music genres inspire me, mostly Pop and R&B. My biggest influences are Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Ariana Grande, Beyoncè, The Weeknd, and Kehlani.

Who are your biggest influences in music?

After high school, which university did you attend and what was your major, and why?

I studied and graduated with a Psychology degree from York University in Toronto. I chose Psychology because I was curious to understand the complexity of the mind and why individuals behave the way they do. It also was the first stepping stone for one of my goals of either practicing music therapy for children or clinical psychology.

After three years of a busy schedule filled with live performances, recording, interviews, photoshoots, video shoots and meetings and back and forth flying, I had decided to return to Toronto at 14 to attend high school and take a break from the industry.

I didn’t realize at the time that this decision would ultimately create a sense of emptiness inside me and unfulfillment. Although my parents wanted me to experience normality within childhood after working at a young age and being away from my family and friends, I grew to know that it isn’t what I wanted.

How was it juggling your studies with music?

Going through university takes an immense amount of dedication and because of this, It was difficult dividing my time between music and studying. Music was the outlet I needed when I became overwhelmed or frustrated. Although completing my studies inhibited my ability to devote myself to music full time, it was always still something I pursued along the way.

ARTS & CULTURE I wanted the song to reflect how I was feeling and the story I intended to narrate. From there, we wrote the whole song within an hour over zoom. Personally, the writing process is one of my favourite’s when creating a song.

If you didn’t become a singer/songwriter, what would you be doing now?

Fulfilling another one of my dreams of becoming either an entertainment lawyer or working in music therapy.

The process for most of my songs starts the same; I'll record different ideas to the beat and write down lyric ideas, whether it’s a full sentence or words that could inspire the song.

What was your favorite live performance?

In NYC, J-14 InTune Concert with Grayson Chance and All Star Weekend. It was in Times Square at the Hard Rock Cafe.

It was my first large live performance and I remember going to my team after I came off stage and said “I want to do a lot more shows.” The feeling I get while performing is magical and unmatched by anything else I do.

I have a journal that I write lyrics in when thoughts and feelings come to mind, as well as a folder on my notes app on my phone that I will write words and lyrics that could inspire my next song.

So, what’s Mutual about?

Not one specific situation or one specific person inspired this song. I wish there was a simple answer for this but the truth is that so many different experiences inspired this record.

It reflects the uncertainty, broken commitments and confusion that we all may go through in relationships. Tell me if it’s mutual really means what it says… is it mutual?

Your latest single, “Mutual” has been grabbing a lot of attention and streams. What was the inspiration for this song? What was the creative process like for you?

I am so grateful for the recognition Mutual has received since being released on March 19. My single has reached 100,000 streams and counting, which is unbelievable to me. Toronto's biggest radio station, Z103.5 has supported the single and it has been played frequently. I am grateful to Matt Wreggitt, The Hammer, for being the first to support and play my song. I always dreamed of being played on the radio, especially in my city, it still feels surreal.

What are the 3 most important things to you?

1. Family 2. Happiness 3. Success What’s next for you?

The creative process began when I heard a beat that my producer G1, who also happens to be my dad, created. I gravitated toward the sound and immediately began singing potential melodies to it. I set up a writing session with Demetri James and G1 and the first thing I said was, I want the title to be called Mutual and I want it to start with Broken Promises.

I am writing, recording and working on new music.

I have plans to release an album that takes listeners on a journey and what they can relate to.

NFT BAZL The Future is Here

o, what exactly is NFT BAZL, you may ask? NFT-BAZL is a new type of

art gallery, designed to revolutionize the business of art. Breathing new life into an antiquated market, artists will be able to exhibit physical and digital masterpieces side-by-side, welcoming collectors to an exhibit where onlookers can view artworks across a variety of mediums and bid by simply scanning a QR code.

Blockchain technology will automate transactions and recording of provenance on artwork; an electronic gallery allows viewing and purchase 24/7. Without waiting for exhibition in a physical gallery or the time-consuming legal process of processing a transfer of ownership, purchases can be made and transfer set underway from the moment the gallery has committed the piece to its digital gallery.

"We made this possible by digitizing the deed of ownership of a physical piece, and tying that to a unique verification code that is permanently associated to the physical art," states Ori Ohayon of GDA Capital. "This allows us to track ownership across the secondary market, making valuations and authentication significantly easier than with the current market infrastructure." In addition, a royalty system will be implemented to allow for secondary trading. When a piece of art, physical or digital, exchanges hands the creator of that masterpiece will receive a royalty, and a record of transfer is permanently established.

What Are NFTs? Unlike crypto currencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, where each token shares the same value and properties, NFT tokens are distinct from one another, each representing completely different and even unique values that cannot be duplicated.

From digital artwork to domain name ownership. to trading cards, the applications of NFTs are wide-ranging and promising. NFTs can fundamentally be used to represent or prove ownership of any unique asset, both digital and physical. They possess unique identification attributes that hold all the asset’s characteristics, as well as all rights associated with owning the asset. These are secured via cryptographic encryption; and are recorded and monitored on blockchain networks. Speaking simply, NFTs are used to prove ownership history and thus are a digital deed of ownership.

NFTs can only have a single owner at any given time, and are immutable in that their ownership record cannot be modified nor can a new NFT with identical attributes be produced. In time, these blockchain records can be expected to provide provenance on artwork.

So, an NFT is not cryptocurrency?

Fungibility is the property of a good or a commodity whose individual units are essentially interchangeable, and each of its parts is indistinguishable from another part. As per their name, NFTs are “non-fungible,” in contrast to cryptocurrencies which are fungible. You can buy and sell fractions of an Ether token, for instance, from anyone anywhere in the world. However, you cannot replace a part of a digital artwork with part of another digital artwork.

NFTs that represent ownership of digital artwork are, thus, non-fungible.

NFT BAZL? GDA, Elitium, and EO Art Concierge have collaborated to transform a seemingly confusing and intangible technology into something much more understandable.

Armed with extensive financial experience, including stints at Goldman Sachs and TD Securities, Ori Ohayon is the ideator behind the GDA venture and now serves as the head of corporate development. He has set out to bring the digital world into antiquated sectors and his first target is the art market.

Also part of the project is Raoul Milhado, who has been a tech entrepreneur for the last ten years, and is the mastermind behind Elitium. Where Do NFTs Come From?

The origin of NFTs can be traced back to around 2012 with Colored Coins. Colored Coins were fundamentally very similar to NFTs. Their intent was to utilize the Bitcoin blockchain to represent assets such as coupons, collectibles, shares of equity, commodity certificates, and more.

These coins were released as a set of coins that were “colored” to differentiate them from the rest. They had special properties set by the issuing agent or similar mechanism, and values that were independent from bitcoin.

In 2017, John Watkinson and Matt Hall developed a set of 10,000 unique characters on top of the Ethereum blockchain network, which would come to be known as Cryptopunks. These characters were rapidly acquired and traded online among those in the cryptocurrency space. Cryptopunpunks created the foundations that now serve as the basis for much of the current art movement.

2017 also saw the advent of CryptoKitties, which was centered around breedable, collectible, digital cats that were unique and entirely owned by their holders; they could not be destroyed, confiscated, or duplicated, like traditional NFTs. CryptoKitties received a lot of attention from the mainstream media, and even led to the spinning-out of the venture-backed startup (i.e., $12.5M USD) Dapper Labs. Alongside CryptoPunks, CryptoKitties would set the standard for the current state of NFT projects.

Lastly, 2017 also saw the emergence of Decentraland: a decentralized virtual reality (VR) platform based on the Ethereum network that enables users to purchase parcels of three-dimensional virtual space in the metaverse (i.e., VR world). Via Decentraland, users can explore, create, play various games, collect items, and engage in many more activities. Like CryptoPunks and CryptoKitties, Decentraland has helped set the stage for the application of NFTs to virtual real estate in the metaverse.

Current State Of The NFT Market Few would have thought that the adorable little Crypto Kitties of the early crypto days would become the building blocks for the future world of Decentralized Finance (DeFi). The NFT market has evolved dramatically since 2017 and we are seeing the digital art market expanding exponentially. Digital sport collectibles and memorabilia are going mainstream and replacing the physical playing cards that most Millenials and Gen Z-ers were so used to.

Although NFTs have had a few mainstream encounters, such as the story about digital artist Beeple selling a piece for approximately $69 million, most people don’t know about them yet. However, with Christie’s managing some recent NFT sales and the idea quickly iterating into sectors that include real estate, collectibles, digital identity, and supply chains, we expect that this is about to hit global consciousness very soon.

This is a pivotal moment for the NFT market as this digital technology starts to transition into the physical world.

As we begin to look at NFTs more as a deed of ownership and less as a digital image or collectible, we start seeing a new world of opportunities that can apply to a range of different industries.

This is what led to the ideation of NFT BAZL. NFT BAZL is the love child of GDA and Elitium. Leveraging the best in both decentralized finance, art, and crypto economics, we were able to create the world's first physical art gallery capable of showcasing both physical and digital art using NFT technology to bridge the gap between the physical and digital art world.

ric McKinnon's enthusiasm for art is undeniable.

He's travelled the world seeking enlightenment in the arts, returning to Toronto as the owner and curator of his Broken Cage Gallery.

I first met Eric at his gallery during an event when he teamed up with Julien Lutz, AKA Director X to help raise awareness and money for 'Operation Prefrontal Cortex.' I was immediately impressed with both Eric and his gallery, and knew that I had to share it with our Spencer readers.

The gallery is located in the heart of Toronto's Entertainment District, at 548 Richmond Street, West. I encourage you to drop by and check out his exhibitions!

Joseph Edward Schur: Thank you for this interview, Eric. I'm very interested in your gallery, and what got you started. What was your experience like studying first at UBC and then at Emily Carr in Vancouver?

Eric McKinnon: Emily Carr was a very great school. It was an intense program where it forced you to constantly do better. It felt like a 'survival of the fittest' situation. Literally in class we would have multiple people tear apart your work before we were allowed to compliment it. It was very focused on the final result and quality of the work which was unique. I say this because the UBC program was mainly focused on theory and the message and meaning of the work. The artist statement and power behind the work. Emily Carr focused on the quality of the visual outcome of the work. UBC focused on the work behind the art as they believed you had your whole career to master your medium or style but the theory and intent behind the work needed to come first!

ARTS & CULTURE Getting sent and accepted to the New York Solomon R. Guggenheim was amazing. It was nice being closer to home but it was also an even larger “Giant” to tackle. At the New York museum everything was multiplied by 100. The responsibilities, the attendance, the art collection, and the overall magnitude of what I was doing. I still can’t believe I got to work in NYC at the Guggenheim Museum. There I was part of the Special Events and Visitor Services department. I worked under some amazing people who had their hands in almost every detail of the museum. I got to work on everything from regular guest attendance and service, to the collection cataloging and documenting, exhibitions that were both current and upcoming (while seeing and helping with their plans) and the prestigious special events such at the Picasso Exhibition which was the biggest event I was able to take part in. I helped organize, set up, invite, serve and run this even along side an amazing team. It was a massive collection of art that circled the world. Private collectors, temporarily, donated their own Picasso pieces to the New York exhibition. NYC installation was the biggest grouping through out its travels to various other museums around the world. The sheer amount of work and their power they had on everyone viewing them was enough for me to wipe my hands and say well that’s as about as good as it gets for me.

Upon graduating from Emily Carr and UBC, you left for Venice, Italy to work at the Guggenheim Museum.

What motivated you to accept that opportunity?

Right away I wanted experience in the art world.

During my studies one of my favourite professors gave a lecture and told us to look to our left and to our right in the classroom and said maybe one out of the 3 of us would be a successful artist, and he stressed MAYBE. This sat with me for a long time and caused me to open my eyes about a career in Art. Maybe I wouldn't be a full time artist but I soon realized how many other positions and careers there are in art aside from a full blown artist. And those roles are super important to artists and art! I was recommended trying to apply to the Venice Peggy Guggenheim internship by a family friend and was overjoyed when they accepted me. It became my first step towards a career in art that didn’t directly involve me being a practicing artist. It forced me to work on art lectures, guided tours of the museum, special events, and event the regular day to day operations at the museum.

And then you were transferred to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City, closer to home.

ART GALLERIES & EXHIBITIONS I understand that during your time in NYC, a couple of life-changing events happened. Can you tell us about that?

allowed to ride the train as we had to go back to the city where we were all living. Everyone else was asked to stay or go home.

While in NYC a few major events happened. Hurricane Sandy was the first. A massive storm system that flooded almost all of Manhattan. Half of the city was out of power for months including my apartment. It was a frightening time as there was water everywhere and the southern hospitals were evacuated due to the need for power for some patients. But it was also an amazing time to be there as everyone was helping each other. Businesses were offering free food and drinks and even shelter if they could to strangers.

I had friends stay at my apartment as my power came back before theirs.

Both experiences were a shock to the system. One a natural disaster that shook the world but also brought a lot of people together. The other a man made tragedy that sucked the joy out of all of us. So my time in NYC was amazing in both positive and sad ways.

And you decided to take a break and travel.

I was offered a position and extension to stay in NYC but I had gone from school straight to work, and really wanted to travel and experience art through other countries and cultures. Plus in the wake of the Sandy Hook event many people including myself wanted to get away. So I went home and bought what was called a “Circle Ticket”. Basically the way it worked is I was allowed to board any plane I wanted to as long as it went in the same westerly direction or destination. I went from Toronto to Vancouver, to Australia (where I traveled to several different places both east and west coast by buying separate tickets) the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, France, England, and then back home to Toronto. Within this trip I was able to take part in my favourite sports and see a lot of my friends along the way as many of them from home or working in Italy or New York had ended up in one of the countries I stopped at. So I slept on lots of couches and got to see some of these countries through the eyes of my friend who were locals. This was done so by visiting amazing museums in Manilla, or climbing the ruins in Thailand, or taking a river trip down the River Thames. So... I accomplished what I set out to do. Circle the globe and experience art in each city I stopped in.

The second event was the infamous Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. A group of my colleagues and I took a day trip to upstate New York by train to see another art museum, the DIA BEACON Museum. This was an hour away from the school by car. We left very early and spent the entire day immersed in the never ending indoor and outdoor art collection; and the massive scale exhibitions they had on display.

This was before everyone’s phone was a direct link to the news and we had no idea what happened that day.

We proceeded to head back to the train station which had been shut down by a full platoon of soldiers from the US army. We immediately became concerned and asked what had happened. None of the officers would tell us. They said until further notice every station had been shut down for everyone’s safety. We then ran to a near by coffee shop to try to find a television and get updated with the horrific news of the elementary school shooting. Instantly a wave of sadness fell over all of us. And we waited hours until they opened the train back up so we could go home. No one really knew what to say or do. Our day came to a silent and cold halt and no one spoke during the entire ride home. Our train was almost empty as we were only a few people

Would you encourage artists to take the path you took, to travel and explore the world?

ARTS & CULTURE Galleries should want as many people as possible to come in. After all isn’t the goal to promote, sell, and get art in the hands of collectors?

I would fully recommend artists and those working in an art career to travel and take advantage of every kind of cultural opportunity available. You really don’t experience it unless you’ve lived it and been there.

Seeing art and culture is way more emotional and inspiring when it’s right in front of you.

Broken Cage is a gallery first but we are also a live art event venue. We host live music shows, stand up comedy nights, Film screenings, and even yoga classes. Each of these in unquestionably art in its own right. AND… maybe a visitor to our gallery doesn’t want to purchase a painting but maybe they want to experience a live comedy show and laugh with other artistic people. BCG aims to be a positive artistic environment and to promote local and international art in all its mediums: visual, performative, musical, or experiential.

You returned to Toronto with the intention of continuing your work in an art gallery environment. How did that go?

Coming back to Toronto I planned to jump right back into my art career. And I had my sights set on working in a gallery as I have a lot of experience in the art world as well as retail sales experience from all my other jobs growing up. This was a tough pill to swallow.

I thought I had a name on my resume that would open doors for me right away. I thought working at two Guggenheim museums would be enough to get me into a gallery position almost instantly. This proved to be way more difficult and frustrating than I envisioned. A lot of the galleries I applied to were family run or were set for staff and had a lot of potential staff submissions and already waiting in line. I was applying and interviewing all over the city and couldn’t seem to crack into a role I wanted. After several years of trying I said enough and risked it all to start my own gallery with a new outlook and vision then some of the galleries I grew up visiting.

What was your goal in opening up the gallery?

To inspire, promote, sell and house art and its experiences. Broken Cage Gallery wants to inspire new collectors to purchase their first piece as well as sup p ort those with extensive collections to add more to their own. We want people to invest in art that will appreciate or retain its value. We don’t want people wasting money on an over produced print from a massive chain store that once you leave the building is worth less then the stretched canvas it’s printed on. We also want to support artists! Art is essential. It drives the world and makes every day better. Try walking down the street without seeing it. Art is proven that when viewed by an individual it causes neurons in the brain to fire. Literally cause sparks in my imagination and creativity. This causes an emotional reaction and can bring forth joy and positivity and happiness through inspiration. We see this in the visual arts, auditory, and performative.

The Broken Cage Gallery. I have to ask, how did you come up with the name?

The name of the gallery had some influence from other international galleries I am a fan of. Such as “Stolen Space Gallery” in London, England. I wanted the name to kind of stand out and demand people to ask what does that mean. Broken Cage Gallery’s name is pretty much another way of saying out of the box or breaking away from what you thought a gallery was. Growing up and visiting galleries and museums through my youth and studies there was an intimidating side to art that I wanted to stay clear from. Not in every gallery but in some when I visited it seemed like an attendee had to be quiet, dress appropriately, have money, or move along. Again not all are like this but I strive to stay away from this side of the art outlook.

And in my opinion that’s not what art should be. Art and art institutions should be welcoming and inviting.

It seems like most are moving in this direction now!

Besides promoting and showcasing art, your gallery also hosts live artistic events.

Live music, stand up comedy, film night, and even yoga classes! These are no doubt strong areas of live performance art. And we cannot neglect them. Musicians, comedians, instructors are all artists. And the audience is kind of like their canvas. Being in an audience for a live show is almost like being part of a performance piece. So you become a part of the art.

Artists Featured at the Broken Cage Gallery TODD MONK Toronto Artist Todd Monk @toddmonkart uses a new and unique style called Pixilism. Creating meticulous and minuscule detail to make his works extreme in focus from far and almost topographical up close. He works with exotic subject matter bridged with contemporary ideas and a beautiful tonal colour pallet. The details of this exotic subject matter is very shocking, sensual, and relatable private life.

Working out of Toronto, Monk’s work is defined by dedication to detail and recreating luminous feminine figures, not afraid to bridge sensuality with elegance. Monk’s large scale and miniature works are painted with hundreds of Pixelated textures before achieving human-like tones. Meticulously rendered, his acrylic pieces employ his signature and realistic style to give the viewer the impression of a living, breathing, and sensual figure.

Monk explores beauty while presenting emotions of tranquility, and sensuality.

He evokes excitement, inviting the spectator into a somewhat private environment, such as a woman swimming nude in her own privacy, eliciting a meditative juncture. Best known for his seductive figures, the viewer is captivated by the unseen, inner life of the subjects he portrays.

Todd's paintings have been exhibited in Toronto, Miami, New York and has been in galleries in New York, San Francisco, Dallas, Palm Springs, Laguna Beach, Collingwood. He has been a part of the Riverdale Art Walk,The Artist Project, Queen West Art Crawl, Spectrum Miami Art Fair 2015, Affordable Art Fair NYC 2016 and The Brain Project 2017.

ARTS & CULTURE FANNY RICE Quebec artist Fanny Rice. @fannyriceart has forged her own particular style through a lot of experimenting on mixed media and abstract mediums. Her works are flowing with living colour and one can relate to each of her pieces whether it be through a visual memory or mental and emotional interpretation. Travel is an extremely important influence on Rice's work and definitely her life and the audience can truly see this in her painting. Each piece gives off a surreal or kind of exaggerated landscape.

It's an aerial view of a coast line, a topographical map, or distant natures-cape exploding with colour. She has mastered and created her formula for art resign and acrylic. And we love its "fluid textured movement". It's easily recognizable.

Rice's work has developed over time too.

Starting off early in her career with darker shades and tones then developing and definitely blooming into these gorgeous / attractive collections of colour in more recent pieces.

ART GALLERIES & EXHIBITIONS GREG BENZ London, Ontario artist Greg Benz. @gregbenz_artwork is a Canadian artist who creates fascinating work using acrylic, polymer, and resin. Benz has been practicing for over ten years. Working primarily with abstractly and mono series mixing acrylic and different colours of polymers while finishing them off with a high glossy resign. These pieces allow their audience to experience different reactions for each individuals own imagination.

His more recent work focuses on his landscape series.

A new look at horizons through natural tones and actual texture. The spark different seasons and draw different emotion from each different viewer.

His highly accalimed work in resin is more explosive. The images are primordial, with the mash-up of colours and patterns giving the impression of acts of violent creation in deep space as plasma entities collide.

Having worked in other media - including digital prints - since graduating from Ontario's Bealart, Benz has also had a rich career as a DJ and Producer of Electronica. This has allowed him to travel a great deal and be a player in a wide range of creative endeavours. "With my latest work I'm trying to push the boundaries of the abstract landscape idea. Using acrylic paint and mixing it with different polymers and resin to push how we look at landscapes and nature. My smaller series focuses on a representational horizon line but is still semi abstract and has a more texture and earthy feel. It started off based on our Canadian winter landscapes here in Ontario and has grown from that idea."

ARTS & CULTURE LOGAN FORD Born in 1985 in Calgary, AB. As the son of a professional artist, Logan has been painting and studying art independently for most of his life. His work is inspired primarily by the natural world, depicting pristine, ethereal landscapes, seemingly untouched by the hands of mankind.

Since moving to Vancouver Island in 2007, Logan has drawn a great deal of inspiration from the west coast landscape. His work is featured in public and private collections across North America, Europe, and Australia.

Logan has a hyper-realistic style of painting. His work is dedicated to nature. While his pieces depict a natural location he paints strictly from memory with no visual reference.

Ford is no doubt influenced by the natural world around him. And it really shows in his pieces.

The works he creates make the audience think they are stepping into a forest, walking across a beach or climbing a mountain.

These aren’t your every day locations. They’re works that require an adventure to witness. His skills are those of super attentive detail that most cameras cannot capture. He's almost over focused. And this shocks the viewer into thinking they are a part of the natural landscape. His subject matter all revolve around Mother Nature and its pure raw existence. He captures beautiful landscapes in their true state and “untouched by mankind”. Almost suggesting their innocence and beauty standing alone. These are frozen moments of nature that can never be disturbed or impacted by an unnatural event. Beauty in its greatest form.

ART GALLERIES & EXHIBITIONS STEEP DANIELS Daniel Sidorowicz also know as STEEP Daniels, is an artist, director, fashion collaborator, and filmmaker whose work and life have crossed the border and can be found in several collections throughout North America and other countries. He is a graduate of the New York Film Academy Cinematography program. Daniel grew up through nature, hard work, and the grunge of North America. He found inspiration from what other’s usually pass by and support from person’s of all backgrounds; whether that be his family, collectors, celebrity friends like Zombie Boy, or one of his most supportive acquaintances a houseless profit from the streets of NYC; who told him that one day his projects would inspire the children of the world leading to 777ov "Where Art Meets Fashion."

777 OVERCOMING: Over the course of 777 days, artist Steep Daniels has been working towards the goal of raising $777,000 to put towards established charities that work with children and youth to overcome adversity through arts, film, and athletics. Daniels spent much of his early childhood in the Toronto Sick Kids hospital as he battled a rare intestinal disorder. He successfully founded 777ov and launched a children’s initiative through this fundraiser using 7 original paintings from his “Purple Frames” collection directly inspired by the spirit of Prince, who Daniels shares a June 7th birthday with.

On April 21st, 2016 when the American Icon passed away, Daniels’ came up with this project, deciding to name it 777

while listening to Prince’s Purple Rain. As the launch of June 7th, 2018, national prince day approached, Daniel’s realized this date fell the 777th day of the project unknown to him when the number first inspired him.

In 2020 his current collection, "Pollution Luxury" is the artist’s most recent series. It is on display as part of the 15-year retrospective amalgamation of multimedia works with despotic and industrial motifs. Daniel's work can be described as a pastiche of the pop art movement where everyday objects, such as caution tape are centered in his art and fashion as a backdrop to the monstrous beauty of contemporary society. His work is a resurrection and mix of discarded mixed media materials and destruction. Only to find a new zombified existence. He's Doctor Frankenstein and Pollock, combining a blend of the past to shock the future. We find materials such as caution tape, electrical cables, staples, circuit boards, and even different pigmented drywall. His subject matter touches on important issues, celebrity characters, as well as influential symbols. It's chaos and order, debris, and beauty, as well as caution and celebration.

ARTS & CULTURE SONNY @sonnysundancer is currently one of South Africa's newest and most exhilarating artists.

Exhibiting all around the world and also promoting the reality that our planet's incredible animal population is in danger! Much of his subject mater directly relates to this issue as well as raises money for this cause. His overwhelmingly beautiful pieces are eye catching and moving on each of his mediums: painting, prints, and gigantic street murals.

“Tiptoeing between reality and fantasy”, the animal portraits in Sonny’s paintings are painstakingly rendered in great detail, with part of their flesh stripped down to the bone to reveal colourful patterns inspired by tribal art from the animal’s natural habitat. Depicted with golden horns and teeth that allude to the reason they are targeted by poachers, their haunting faces allow viewers to look directly into their eyes and fathom their dire predicament. The collection is the culmination of an ongoing worldwide tour that has Sonny creating large mural paintings from the streets of Amsterdam, Miami and London, to those of Vladivostok in Russia.

velisa Natasha Genova began her work on Transform LA in 2019, after the initial proof of concept was developed in Canada between 2017 and 2019. Partnered with the Canadian Consulate of Los Angeles, it is scheduled for Nov 2021, to coincide with Los Angeles’ Heritage Month in November.

Mindful that Arts and Culture is an area rampant in misrepresentation and misappropriation, the program encouraged students to approach art with a connection to homeland, and self. As a painter herself, Evelisa was able to connect the practice of artmaking with personal identity, and relationships to the surrounding landscape so that what they painted would begin with the truth of who they are. This approach helped her to build trusting and longstanding relationships, the program carried on another year, and she went on to work with a First Nations Advocacy organization, continuing to put community perspectives and priorities first. Wanting to expand on these relationships, she was keen to understand what would be appropriate in supporting those communities.

Transform, as the Art and Business exhibit has been named, is purposed to showcase how mutually respectful and mutually beneficial relationships with tribal nations across cultural and economic sectors benefit everyone.

After working internationally in community-led programs in Fiji, India, and Costa Rica, and achieving a Master’s Degree in Education at Harvard University in 2013, Evelisa Natasha Genova made a commitment to serve Indigenous communities and Indigenousled priorities in the most appropriate way. Working in government relations was one of those avenues, but in 2016, after volunteering with Six Nations educators and community members on a local peace-building initiative with non-Indigenous neighbours, her

“The fact that I was a painter helped to build bridges between both adults and children, First Nations and Canadians. There’s a lot of talent in communities, and those that want to be visible with those gifts should have an opportunity to share them in a meaningful way” says Evelisa. Whether through coaching youth in the arts or in helping them to develop skills of problem solving and leadership, Evelisa’s vision is to combine these creative gifts as a way to create more understanding, compassion, and a better world. With that vision, Evelisa began curating art exhibits that told that story through merging art and business; art that is founded on a grounding of who they are, and how “honouring” Indigenous perspectives, truths, and reality is to mutually respect each other. From there Evelisa began creating art exhibits to take the story of our relationship to each other beyond the community.

The key through-line for Evelisa in exhibits has been the relationship component; relationships will only last on a foundation built on truth. For todays’ virtues of “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” to meaningfully thrive, the first relationships on this land must be healed and transformed. This sets the tone for how we treat anyone. Evelisa sees a lot of hope in getting that understanding out there.

Since the Art and Culture has had some of the worst offenses of cultural appropriation, Evelisa’s key goal is to amplify the artists’ work in their authentic sense of self, in the context of our complex and shared landscapes.

That ultimately led her to Transform LA. The exhibit evolved from her work in the government sector and her search for a meaningful way to support diverse economic development within tribal nations.

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms signed in April 1982 did not in fact lessen discrimination and in equality because the rights allowed for a distinction between groups, such that only likes were to be treated alike. It took another 3 years before the clause for likes was interpreted to include everyone, and with each revision through the years it has been reinterpreted with a greater sensitivity towards disadvantaged groups.

Curator of Art Is Life, Evelisa with Elder Danny Beaton She came up with the idea of supporting joint ventures, with a view to building best practices across cultural and economic sectors. Evelisa began working with the Transform LA Art and Business Exhibition at the LA Consulate in 2019. Through her appointment by the Consulate to co-curate the Transform LA Exhibit, she is officially co-curating with local Indigenous curator and LA American Commissioner Dawn Jackson this year. A long-standing Commissioner, having worked with Disney corporate for over 20 years, and being an artist herself, Dawn brings a lot of creative maturity and insight to the project. After being postponed in June 2020 due to the pandemic, the exhibit has been rescheduled to Nov. 2021, with media partner ABC, and kicking off of Heritage Month November 2021.

The name of the exhibit Transform was developed in partnership with heredity chiefs Toby Williams and Arnold Jacobs of Six Nations. Through ongoing discussions with Indigenous artists and leaders, Evelisa, Toby and Arnold would have ongoing discussions about the need for communities to exert control over their own economic development. That’s where communities began to visibly thrive. This opens a door to the beginning of authentic transformation.

Since Evelisa’s work was in Ontario communities, the journey to seek support for the initiatives began in Canada. She established partnerships with the Toronto Dominion Bank and the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business among others.

However, the strongest support to drive her vision forward ultimately came from the Consulate in LA.

The Trail Through ongoing conversation with the leaders and teachers, they came up with the idea of putting together something for the artists themselves: A platform that would give them the opportunity to do their own art and to organize it. At that point, Evelisa’s painting skills intersected with a sense of business and they decided to go for it.

“When a community experiences that they are able to enter into great business ventures, whether it’s in Tourism or as creative entrepreneurs in the arts within their communities, they begin to diversify their own economic development. This is amazing when it is taken beyond land and resource development, and the ideas for the ventures come from the artists, the creators.”

An idea that evolved through mutual respect and consciousness among the artists, has since progressed into a way that has the communities thriving. It has blossomed beyond the attempt by government to fund programs for Indigenous communities continuously sprouting up in the effort to begin to make retribution for atrocities that would have the culture extinguished. This opportunity in the arts supports them in creating sustainable business partnerships. It gives them a way to advance their own goals and missions. The initiative clearly begins to shift power into their hands and has gone on to include the staging of Aboriginal art exhibits.

Evelisa’s experience in the LA Tranform evolved from her work with Mitch O’Farrell, a member of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 13th district and also the City Mayor. An outcrop of the alliance was the renaming of Columbus Day to Indigenous Native Day in LA. in 2018.

Canada already has Aboriginal Rights written into the Constitution, and Section 15 in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to lessen discrimination. Evelisa has taken an opportunity to make us heal the relationship in appropriate and meaningful ways, giving us a model to take us forward. She is passionate to have it underscore the importance of collaboration for ensuring that truths are communicated clearly and are used to advance awareness. Inherent in the experience is the potential to unify and enrich society.

The aim of the joint effort that resulted was to put together a celebration for Indigenous Heritage Month in LA by showcasing Indigenous and International artists in mutual respect with each other, building relationships with local decision makers, the Native American Commission of LA, and community Artists to establish a meaningful collaboration to make an exhibit possible.

If we trace the gains achieved through the work of Evelisa, it would seem that they happened in leaps. In truth, it all began with one small step. Evelisa is part of a unique breed of people with the inquisitiveness and courage to question what makes our world go round, and to look it squarely in the eye and do something to change it. It’s the optimism and drive like hers that fuel our planet to become a truly better place. When added to the other adventurers and trailblazers among us, their lens take us into a vision that would transform our world into one that is inclusive and just.

The event in November, 2021 will invite Tribal leaders, delegates from Canada, Mexico, and the appropriate local representative into the discussion to have them informed of what the event could or should look like. She’s also been collaborating with a woman who works at First People Cultural Council in BC to invite some of the businesses and artists in BC. The exhibition provides a tangible example of what this collaboration between business and the arts looks like. It moves away from the abstract of the recommendations in the treaty, to what’s actually being done. It provides a model so that no that one has to reinvent the wheel.

The Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples ((RCAP) was established

by Order in Council on August 26, 1991, and in October 1996 it submitted its Report.

The Commission was formed in response to concerns over the state of the relationship between Indigenous peoples and Canadians and to investigate injustices and propose solutions.

Dawn Jackson - curator of Native American exhibit at Los Angeles City Hall And Co-curator of Transform LA at the Canadian Consulate Historical Fact: The Royal proclamation of 1763 proclaiming colonial domination stated that immigrants who had been living and fighting with Indigenous nations, could not take land directly from them. The land could be sold only to the Crown which would mediate settlement on the land in question. The 1867 Confederation established the Indian Act, a policy that made Indigenous peoples wards of the state and as such controlled them.

A relationship that evolved from the persistent effort to establish it as a long-standing one is the first of its kind on the planet. Coming out from behind a hypocritical stance that we care about diversity and inclusion, the initiative represents the first relationship appropriate model based on the political relationship, the social relationship, and the legal.

he thriving town of Almonte, Ontario, once supported several woollen mills. When cheaper foreign textiles began arriving in the 1950s, the mills closed one by one, leaving the sheep to work in the bedtime counting industry. Nearby, Canada's largest dairies produce a waste by-product called milk permeate. A well-rested Omid McDonald saw an opportunity in this by-product and opened Dairy Distillery in Almonte to distil the permeate into vodka.

Laurent Roche-Ballard, Pier-Luc Roussel, Maxime Chouinard and Michael Bourdages opened the distillery in the small Quebec town of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, surrounded by a stunning Laurentians landscape. To develop their gin recipe, they collected local flora such as organic wild blueberries, sweet-fern sprouts and dune pepper – a plant with flavours somewhere between black pepper and evergreen.

Panacée is presented in a gorgeous tin flask to match the liquid inside. t’s tempting to think that vodka made from carrots and with a rabbit on the label would be something Wile E. Coyote might order from an ACME catalogue. For Riga Farms, however, making vodka with carrots solved a problem. The farm, near Bradford, Ontario, grows over 300 acres of leafy vegetables and root crops. They pluck about half of these carrots from the ground and package them for eating. The scraggly ones that no one wants become vodka.

After combining these lucky carrots with corn, they ferment and distil them into a new vodka with a Merrie Melodies of flavour. he Vesper Martini became a classic cocktail when James Bond ordered one in the 1953 book Casino Royale. At Toronto’s BarChef, instead of relying on Bond gadgets, Frankie Solarik brought the concept of the Vesper into his lab to re-invent it with homegrown Canadian flavour. He makes his cocktail with an exclusive high octane spruce tip gin distilled at Concord Ontario’s Still Waters distillery. Spruce tips imbue this gin with bright hits of citrus, floral accents and green forest notes.

Solarik mixes the gin with a regional Canadian Late Harvest Vidal wine, which adds tropical fruit layers. Add ice, Vodkow and Vodkow Cream. Shake and double strain into a tulip glass. Garnish with fresh ground black peppercorn. (Berries can be substituted with what’s in season.)

Red Rye Hand (Credit: Mike Norbury) Makes 1 Cocktail Mint Stem Oleo 250 g sugar 25 g mint stems 150 ml hot water Cocktail: 2 oz Sheringham Rye 1/3 oz Mint Stem Oleo 3 muddled strawberries 3 dashes angostura bitters Handful of ice cubes Crushed ice Mint Sprig for garnish For the Mint Stem Oleo, in a saucepan, muddle the mint stems and sugar into a paste. Add hot water, then stir until dissolved. Fine strain into a clean jar. It will store in the fridge for two weeks.

For the cocktail, muddle the strawberries in a shaker. Add ice, rye, mint stem oleo and angostura bitters.

Stir until cold and silky smooth. Fine strain into a rocks glass over crushed ice. Garnish with a mint sprig.

uri Gagaron, April 12, 1961. History. The Russian cosmonaut spent exactly 108 minutes in space orbiting the Earth. Just 23 days later on May 5, 1961, NASA's Alan Shepard made a 15 minute suborbital flight that reached an altitude of 115 miles. And that was just the beginning of humans conquering space.

Let’s jump ahead to 1998 when the first components of the International Space Station were launched. On November 2, 2000 the first long-term residents arrived at ISS, the largest artificial object in space orbiting the Earth. For now.

of Outerspace, Teenagers From Outerspace, and of course the legendary Plan 9 From Outer Space. Yes, I was enthralled with outer space, refusing to accept that it was nothing but science fiction. Hollywood aside, I’ve always been optimistic that one day a regular Joe like myself would break through Earth’s atmosphere into space. Some 60 years later, I'm actually considering a vacation, maybe even a Spencer party orbiting our planet.

Who is responsible for making this happen?

You can thank the team at the Orbital Assembly Corporation, a branch of The Gateway Foundation, which was set up in 2012. Originally called The Von Braun Space Station, the out-of-this-world hotel has been rebranded as The Voyager Station. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2025, utilizing robots in space, assembling the station while in low Earth orbit. Shaped like a giant doughnut, with a diameter of 200 meters, Voyager Station will consist of 24 modules in the outer ring. The amenities are similar to what you would expect on a first-class cruise ship, including luxury hotel suites, restaurants, a skybar, a gymnasium, and even a concert venue. Essentially, the station will rotate about its axis, creating an environment of artificial gravity. Thus, everyone inside the station will experience what’s called centripetal acceleration.

hat makes Ireland such a popular destination for travellers? For me, it's the rich history, the culture, and the welcoming hospitality. And of course, the striking landscape. Surrounded by three seas in the North Atlantic, Ireland's rugged coastline hugs the island in 'Forty Shades of Green,' referring to the popular phrase. Yes, this country is very green.

As tempting as it may be to hang out at one of the many colourful pubs, enjoying a Guinness, I encourage you to explore the beautiful countryside. By car, cycling, walking, or even by horseback, you won't want to miss the great outdoors during your visit. Also, there are a number of tours available that will take you to places like the Cliffs of Moher, offering some of the most spectacular scenery in Ireland. It's a popular site for surfers, with some of the biggest waves in the world. Nearby is Aill na Searrach, where parts of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince were filmed. I could go on, but I'd like to share some fun facts about this amazing country!

w An Irishman designed the award given at the Oscars. w Ireland has more Nobel Prize winners for literature than any other country in the world. w Ireland has its own ancient version of the Olympics called the Tailteann Games. w St. Valentine is actually buried in Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin. w The White House, in Washington, D.C. was designed by an Irishman. w The oldest yacht club in the world is in Ireland. w Bram Stoker, who wrote Dracula, is from Dublin. w The guillotine was used in Ireland before it was used in France. w Halloween was derived from an Irish festival called Samhain. w Ireland is home to one of the oldest pubs in the world; it opened in 900 AD. In this five part series, I'll take you on an exciting journey to the Emerald Isle. I'm sure that you will share my enthusiasm for choosing Ireland as a must-add to your bucket list of places to visit. Waterford Castle: An Island Resort Steeped in Irish history, this beautiful castle was the ancestral home of the Fitzgerald family for 800 years.
