SINE SCREEN VAN DYCK MURPHY STUDIO The project is part of a partnership between the Regional Arts Commission, Downtown St. Louis, and Explore St. Louis for a new public art plan to support revitalization efforts in the area. The project lies at the intersection of Locust and 7th, on the property of Adler and Sullivan’s iconic Union Trust building, now Hotel Saint Louis. Through the integration of old and new technology, ceramic 3D printing has the ability to change both how we design and realize architectural ornamentation. The project explores the role of emerging digital technologies with an understanding of the ways humans have been constructing buildings for millennia. This work replaces the unsustainable, fixed plastic materials of traditional 3d printing with clay: a sustainable, locally-sourced, and reusable medium with deep roots in St. Louis’s rich architectural history.

Sine Screen is comprised of 592 digitally designed and fabricated clay units which aggregate to form a self-structuring hypersurface. The geometry of both the individual modules and wall as a whole is drawn from parallel logics that are both tectonic and historically referential.

The sculpted form of the units and aggregated system produce patterns of light and shadow, textural fields, and novel optical effects around the sculpture. Sine Screen references Sullivan’s ornamentation, while aspiring to engage passersby and instilling a new relationship with this historical building and downtown St. Louis.

A CURTAIN WALL JACOB GREENGO & SPENCER DERTHICK A curtain in theater summons a sense of anticipation, inspiring delight and stirring feelings of hopeful fantasy and wonder. They are the decorative barrier between the audience and stage – the transient veil of a performance or an event – a grand window dressing of an unfolding narrative.

Our work examines a playful juxtaposition between a billowing curtain and the rigid ceramic material of which it is made. The bottom of the curtain ruffles out onto the ground, increasing in complexity, while its state is materialized as a static moment in time.

This project draws on Italian sculptor Giovanni Strazza’s “The Veiled Virgin” which captures the draping effect of cloth over the contours of the Virgin Mary’s realistically rendered features. Clay’s willingness to be transformed both in form and texture make it a perfect medium for exploring the concept of a curtain. Using a 3D ceramic printer, we hoped to recreate this aesthetic in 26 component parts. We imagine this sculpture both in its unmarred form and as a ruin, with plants entangling the cracks and vining up the crevices.

CHOUTEAU COMMONS GREENLINK 411 STUDIO, PATTY HEYDA This project is the centerpiece in Midtown’s revitalization, creating key connections between St Louis University’s North and South Campuses and the rest of the city. It is dense enough to support mass transit like bikes, buses, and metro lines that plug into schools, jobs, parks, community anchors, and other daily destinations in St Louis. It provides quick access to the MetroLink system and eventually, Chouteau’s Greenway will connect nearby ecological corridors.

This exciting mix of retail, residential, urban farming, and schooling spaces covers 25 acres of industrial land. The mixed-use scheme brings people within walking distance of amenities and also attracts some of the 24,000 daily traffic vehicles from the major crossroads. The housing is compact and leaves room for integrated social spaces and vegetation to lower stormwater impact and reduce the heat island effect. The densified housing also improves the economic viability of community services, decreases infrastructure cost per inhabitant, and improves the safety of shared spaces.

Finally, creative layout of volumes offers generous light and outdoor areas, creating attractive public realms and increasing social interactions.

The apartments use a system of exterior paneling that responds to changes in solar radiation and two stack ventilation columns to regulate the building’s climate. The tri-plex prototype investigates methods of capturing and storing rainwater to be used as greywater for household activities and watering outdoor plants during drier weeks. Rowhouses are the most sustainable form of housing, and this area of the project explores ways to realign the rowhouse to maximize passive design strategies Schematically, the building shapes are formed by a 30x30 ft grid that aligns with the two major cross streets and a diagonal grid that creates connections from the south to the Grand metro station. The diagonal grid also increases the wind flux during the summer and allows helpful solar radiation to reach a larger surface area on the buildings.

Collaborators: HDR, Alatus, Loucks, Inter-Fluve 325 Blake Rd, Hopkins, MN 325 Blake Road aims to transform a former industrial site into a vibrant space where people and nature thrive together. As the project intern, I put together basemaps for the HDR design charrette in St. Louis Park, MN and participated in stormwater management discussions, helping to implement a goal of treating stormwater from 270 acres of surrounding area and restoring the creek frontage. I also created technical drawings for PUD Drawings submitted Oct 2021. Finally, I am working with the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District to model integrative nodes along the creek and connecting greenway.

Collaborators: Andrew Montgomery SunOpta is a non-GMO and organic foods distributor that is focused on helping make the planet and its people healthier through LAWN plant based foods and beverages. Sustainability is central to their operations and they hoped to materialize some of their core values in an outdoor employee patio at the Minnesota office. The project began with sketching out a number of options that center around a nature related concept. The client picked “Oasis” which features a wooden elevated deck with a central shade tree that provides the “oasis” to the deck. It also resembles a seed and the tree sillouettes reinforce the tree seen in the brand logo.

ZERO IN TEXAS 312 STUDIO, STEPHEN LEET The focus of the Menil Collection is to exhibit art “[in] a place where each visitor’s very singularity is valued: you are not told how to look, you are invited to imagine the possibilities of vision and contemplation.” The curatorial criterion of the Menil Collection prioritizes experience over didactic displays. This project juxtaposes works from four Zero artists in a quiet setting with natural light.

The four artists I chose to include in this project are Otto Piene, Heinz Mack, Enrico Castellani, and Lucio Fontana. After doing a research presentation on Heinz Mack and Enrico Castellani, I was inspired to explore how tesselations, fragmentations, variations, and repetitions are used in art and architecture. These elements can be used to create naturalistic representations. Heinz Mack, specifically, noted that he was able to create organic and vibrating artwork through organized patterns.

As I was developing my project, I scripted a program in Grasshopper that arrays points on a planar grid to form a delaunay triangulation.

Delaunay triangulations and voronoi tessellations are able to create organic structures without directly imitating nature. This triangulation that I used to make a collage out of the Zero artists became the side elevation of many of my project’s walls.

The project shape represents a catamaran, with private program on the south side, flanked by native tree cover, and public program in the center with openings to the north. The rotated squares juxtapose this shape. The large open atrium greets visitors and funnels them into a second interstitial space and the main remaining portion of the building.

The four artists I selected for this project each have their own diamond enclosure in the permanent collection. Each enclosure contains process drawings and experimental models that require observation at a more intimate level while the outer walls showcase a collection of iconic finished work from each of these artists.

Both the larger sculptures and aluminum reliefs scatter light, as do the reflection pools, creating many rays of reflected light in the gallery.

The window pockets on the northern facade create sudden interruptions in the gallery wall that draw the viewer in from center spaces. As living, growing things, gallery plants stand out in stark, organic contrast next to the human-made artworks they accompany. The interior space investigates the various relationships between art and architecture, “spatial art”, building and setting, and the opportunity to design and develop architectural spaces that privilege experience over appearance.

HOME ECONOMICS STUDIO 311, KELLEY MURPHY

This project focuses on the design of a two-family dwelling in the Washington Avenue-Loop neighborhood. The building program is defined by a study of part-to-whole relationships bringing together two different but connected private living quarters and a shared space. Technological advances, evolving definitions of family, changing gender and power roles, increasing inequality, a rise in the sharing economy, and now the Covid-19 pandemic are disrupting the traditional separation between home, work, and play. Throughout this course, I reconsidered all elements of housing including the formal, spatial, material, iconographic/symbolic, compositional, programmatic, and the social in the creation of a new model for urban residential living.

The studio began with a detail study involving the close investigation of the relationships between interconnected orinterlocking parts.

These studies were used for their potential as generators of tectonic, programmatic and spatial strategies that can appear across scales from the architectural detail to the building.

My precedent interlocking joint informed more of my ideas about gridded space and geometry rather than the way my two units interlock. I constructed study model using a basswood frame and then added flat strips of bristol as flooring. I was inspired by precedent studies to patchwork my exterior with panels and screens. In this model I experimented with adding curves to both plan and section.

The first floor is a relatively open game room with a bar. In the center is a square base double helix staircase.

The second floor has a half bathroom, kitchen, dining room, and open living space.

The top floor has three bedrooms in each unit and additional bathrooms.

Due to the close adjacencies of the building to the neighboring buildings, I added a light modulating cladding around the top two floors. These two foot tall light wells angle out on the east and west sides of the building to pull southern lighting into the room.

Above is a diagram of the solar path of the sun throughout the year and a temperature mapping using EPW data. This rendering also has shadows from 12pm on the summer solstice.

SUBURBIA TRANSFORMED INTEGRATED PLANTING DESIGN JACQUELINE MARGUETTE Suburbia Transformed taps into the spirit of collective urban living celebrated in communes, gated communities, and Dutch woonerfs.

It considers the suburban garden as a shared condition. It enables a more intentional and custodial involvement of natural systems that extend well beyond the footprint of the typical back yard. The subdivision itself is an ecosystem which humans share with nonhumans.

The project seeks to explore the sensorial effects made possible by plants: people come into some kind of encounter with plant form, color, texture, movement, spatiality, and change through time – in short, the veridic.

MOUNTAIN DWELLINGS STUDY BUILDING SYSTEMS DUSICA STANKOVIC

Collaborators: Annika Pan, Connor Merritt During the first portion of this course, my team created a board of study diagrams and illustrations: an environmental analysis using Grasshopper/Ladybug; a material drawing of some of the exterior cladding elements; a planter box detail; and diagrams showing the structural and experiential relationship between parking lot and residential space. We also analyzed the structural components of the building through creating a technical section drawing and a 3D model. Integral to completing this assignment was learning AutoCAD and V-Ray softwares.

LASKEY CHARRETTE 212 DESIGN COMPETITION LESLEY LASKEY Our project for this two day design charrette, Model T, plays with angled, planar modulations of light and forms a variety of wall structures that vary in transparency. The form of each of the concrete modules comes from a rectangular void through a cube with planar cuts through the corners at 45 degree angles. One face of the module is cut through by a triangular extrusion, allowing more light to infiltrate the interior space and reinforce the triangular geometry of the external form. Given the module’s symmetry about multiple axes, it can be stacked in a variety of ways, each way creating intricate tunnels of light. My main role in this project was creating and modeling this final design in Rhino.

We named our project after the Ford Model T vehicle to liken our systematic and efficient process of creating the concrete modules as a team to the assembly line used to produce these vehicles. We completed some of the more time sensitive tasks simultaneously as a group like glueing the molds together, pouring concrete, and peeling off the mold at the correct time. In the planning stage we worked on tasks such as creating a digital model and template for the mold separately to maximize our breadth of ideas. Through trial and error of test models and effective group dynamics, we were able to navigate some of the difficulties associated with constructing out of concrete.

LIVING SPACE TINY HOME STUDIO 112 BRUCE LINDSEY This project seeks to fit the functions of play, sleep, work, cook, and using the bathroom into a 12x12x12 foot living space. The tiny home, based off of concepts from Ken Isaac, features concrete flooring and wood slated walls. The basswood slats, attached to a dowel, can be rotated upwards to provide more enclosed sleeping space or to let more light into the area. The dowel functions on both the back and right side depending on the location of the sun.

The vertical slates on the right facade function as structural support for both the ceiling slats as well as the three translucent shelves.

The transluscent work desks are illuminated by incoming sunlight, helping to provide work light during the day.

As a precursor for the following “Living Structures” project, I constructed a 12x12x12 inch cube using interlocking basswood sticks and wire. The interlocking wood allows for self-stabilizing structure and mimics the style used by Ken Isaac.

SAMARA HOUSE ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS I MICAH STANEK Collaborator: Micah Rydberg

The Frank Lloyd Wright Samara House sits on one acre of sloping terrain in West Lafayette, Indiana. Built from 1954 to 1956, the architecture has now been weathering and aging for around 65 years. In this wet bioregion, the constructed landscape has grown into a sort of lush woodland. Many things have aged well, but Wright’s signature large overhanging roof collects a lot of rainwater to a few select downspouts. Gutters and custom rain chains slow the downpour somewhat, but the landscape receives a high volume of water in these few select points on the ground. The rainwater, over time, has hollowed out the ground underneath the patio, causing the foundations of the patio to settle. The concrete slab that covers the patio has cracked and begun to tilt and sink.

My task was to design a pathway to carry the water away from the building via a swale to a detention basin (raingarden). As I re-terraformed the site, I considered changing human circulation and replanting the site for functionality. Included in this portfolio are the original and regraded plans; site analysis using Rhino, Grasshopper, Ladybug, and Mosquito; an integrated planting plan; and section cuts through the site.

PLAYTIME: KINDERGARTEN STUDIO 211 PETRA KEMPF After writing an intial description of how our studio imagined the daily experience of a kindergartener, I designed a kindergarten module to support the experience of a kindergartener. This module is intended to support fifteen students and two teachers. In this kindergarten, the schedule for daily activities is determined by the sun’s position in the sky. The East, South, and West facades of the building are covered in a shell of diagonal rotating slats to shield the interior spaces from direct sunlight.

The slats can be rotated perpendicular to the light to darken the rooms during nap time and opened back up for teaching time. The slats are interactive, making the building a game in itself. The structure of the building was created by rotating large steps in a circle and matching this twisting geometry with other rotational forms. The large steps create the sensation of endless play throughout the kindergarten and reimagine the notion of hopping: an element of play I studied during the first part of this studio through the creation of a game.

LEIDEN UNIVERSITY GARDEN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE HISTORY AND THEORY ERIC ELLINGSEN My primary focus of study in this course was the influence of Italian Renaissance landscape architecture on Dutch Gardens during the Golden Age. After completing a research study and paper, I translated this information into an original drawing for a Dutch pleasure and botanical garden situated on a site near Leiden University. The garden is placed near a water canal and is a new version of the Leiden Botanical Garden. This garden works to encompass experimental spatial concepts from budding French baroque Classicism.

This garden showcases a large, diverse range of exotic plants in floral beds and goes beyond merely presenting plants for their usefulness, serving as a status symbol of colonialism and power. Within the long rectangular shaped exterior border, the garden contains an orchard, a floral pleasure garden, and a botanical garden. Adjacent production areas such as the greenhouse, aviary, pheasantry, and orange garden compliment the formal structure.
