Interview
Exlporing morning routines and nutrient dense skincare
BEHIND THE SCENES
THE GLOWCERY Redefining what sustainable success looks like both in beauty and in business, founder Roshanne Dorsett of the culthero brand, The Glowcery, shares some fresh insights.
Read the full interview at spellmagazine.com
In my opinion, the traditional beauty industry sells solutions to symptoms rather than addressing causes. Sensitive skin? Here's a soothing serum. Dullness? Here's a brightening acid. Breakouts? Here's a targeted treatment. None of that gets to the root of why skin becomes stressed in the first place, which is almost always a combination of barrier depletion, stress, and nutrient-poor products, all of which are driven by how we're living. The other thing the industry gets wrong is assuming more is better. More actives, more steps, more products. Depleted skin doesn't need more. Just like your body when it's burnt out, your skin needs nutrients it can absorb, and it needs rest. That's the entire premise of The Glowcery, we make nutrient dense skincare for skin thats depleted and overdue a reset. SPELL

I became really fascinated by the foodskin connection, and it fed directly into The Glowcery's formulation philosophy. In many ways navigating veganism is what taught me to think about skin from a nutritional lens rather than just a topical one. Now I use fewer but more effective products rather than an extensive 10 step skincare routine. Building and sticking to a morning routine has been a game changer! Whenever I would hear successful entrepreneurs such as Emma Grede, Grace Beverely and my corporate friends talk about Morning routines, I never took them seriously, until I created one for myself. Now I wake up at 5.30am every day, meditate, journal, visualise and pray. I noticed the difference after three months of consistently doing this. I wake up feeling a lot calmer, in control and regulated,
this has not only had a positive impact on my creativity, but my enthusiasm and overall mental wellbeing. Anyone who says they've solved burnout permanently is not being totally honest with themselves. There’s no work life balance when it comes to building a business, something always has to give. I am always thinking about The Glowcery, there’s no days off. What's different now though is awareness. I know my signals, I know when I'm running on adrenaline rather than aligned energy, when I'm doing too much out of fear of not doing enough, and most importantly when I need to stop. Building The Glowcery has taught me that rest is not the enemy of ambition, it's the necessary pit stop that makes this long, challenging but exciting journey a lot more sustainable.

Flats step into the spotlight
Note from Spell Editor This issue we shine the light on black owned businesses doing things their way. Roshanne Dorsett founder of cult beauty label, The Glowcery, says with vim, “the traditional beauty industry sells solutions to symptoms rather than addressing causes.” This seems to the theme for disruptive start-ups – seeking out the root cause to life’s little ol’ problems. Chester Charles, the founder of Patt3rn Up London, a satin-lined headwear clothing brand, started with the simple logic, “you’re only protecting your hair during the night. That’s only 40-45% of your day… what about the rest?” Starting from page 4 (opposite) you can get the scoop on these brands, but make sure you head over to spellmagazine.co.uk for more interviews, and to unlock our content archive with hair and beauty extraordinaires.

High heels are taking a back seat this season, according to new data from fashion platform WNTD. After analysing more than 100,000 saved shoes sitting in shopping baskets, the platform found shoppers are increasingly favouring mesh flats, jelly shoes and woven styles, while saves of high heels have fallen by 28% year-on-year. The findings suggest comfort and practicality continue to shape fashion choices, with animal print remaining one of the most popular statement footwear trends.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
PDRN
Confused by the endless stream of skincare initials? Here's why PDRN is the one acronym worth making room for in your beauty vocabulary If you've spent more than five minutes scrolling social media, you'll know that skincare has become obsessed with initialisms. There's AHA, BHA, PHA, HA, EGF, LED and enough letters to make you feel like you've wandered into a game of Scrabble. While SPF remains non negotiable, PDRN is the new four letter emerging as a popular supporting step for those looking to help their skin recover and maintain a healthy looking glow, no matter the season. WHAT IS PDRN? PDRN, short for polydeoxyribonucleotide, is the ingredient behind the socalled "salmon sperm facial" that has become one of the most talked-about treatments in aesthetic medicine. Before you recoil in horror, let's clear
something up. PDRN is made up of DNA fragments, traditionally derived from salmon, which researchers have been studying for decades because of their ability to support tissue repair and regeneration. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Research suggests it may help support wound healing, calm inflammation, encourage collagen production and improve the appearance of uneven pigmentation. HOW TO USE IT For years, PDRN was mostly found in professional treatments carried out in clinics and medical spas. It's often applied after procedures such as microneedling and laser treatments, SPELL
06 MAGAZINE
when the skin is primed to absorb restorative ingredients more effectively. More recently, PDRN has made its way into at-home skincare products, including serums, creams and sheet masks. While these won't work as deeply as professional treatments, regular use may help improve skin texture, elasticity and glow over time. THE VERDICT Like most skincare ingredients, it's not a miracle cure and it won't erase every sign of ageing overnight. But if your goals include brighter, calmer, healthier-looking skin, PDRN is certainly one of the more interesting ingredients to emerge in recent years. And in a beauty world overflowing with confusing acronyms, it’s one worth remembering.

PLASTIC FASHION
Beach clubs have become this summer’s hottest fashion runway, with luxury brands (like Gucci at La Rose des Vents, Monaco) taking over sun-soaked destinations. This year, choosing where to sunbathe feels just as important as choosing what to wear.
Lip oils are taking a back seat as soft-focus, velvety balms steal the spotlight. Think all the comfort of a nourishing balm, but with a chic, blurred finish that looks expensive.

Yacht energy
You do not need to own a yacht. You just need to dress like someone who has one on standby. Navy and white might seem cliche, but with pops of gold hardware and immaculate tailoring, they’re a great foundation to build from. Think crisp shorts, oversized shirts and a huge pair of sunglasses that make eye contact optional. As for the beauty look, channel “old money”. Soft matte skin, brushed brows and a nude manicure that looks like it costs more than your lunch (but really, it doesn’t). Bonus points if you’re carrying a book you’ll never actually read.

The
MIRACLE KNOTS
trend
A beginner’s guide to effortless boho braids
If you’ve spent any time on TikTok lately, chances are you’ve come across miracle knots. The viral hair technique has racked up millions of views thanks to its promise of creating beautiful boho braids without the lengthy salon appointment or advanced braiding skills traditionally required. For anyone who loves the effortless, textured look of boho braids but has been put off by the time, cost or complexity, miracle knots could be the answer. WHAT ARE MIRACLE KNOTS? Miracle knots are a crochet-based braiding technique designed to achieve the soft, lived-in appearance of boho braids. Rather than feeding hair extensions directly into each braid, the
method uses a crochet hook to attach curly or wavy human hair to individual plaits, creating a seamless, naturallooking finish. The technique was popularised by content creator Olubolade Alexis, whose TikTok demonstration has amassed millions of views. Originally experimenting with traditional crochet methods, Alexis developed the technique to create a style that was lighter, more versatile and easier for people to recreate at home. WHY ARE MIRACLE KNOTS SO POPULAR? Traditional boho braids can take several hours to install and often require an
SPELL
32 MAGAZINE
experienced braider. Miracle knots simplify the process by separating the style into two stages: first, creating individual braids with your natural hair, and then crocheting loose curls into those braids. The result is a soft, textured style that closely resembles professionally installed boho braids, while making the technique much more accessible for DIYers. Hairstylists also point out that the finished style often appears more natural than traditional crochet braids because the extensions are attached to individual plaits rather than cornrows, allowing the curls to fall more freely.
Using a crochet hook, two or three pieces of loose curly or wavy human hair are threaded into each braid, beginning around the middle of the plait and continuing towards the ends. Distributing the curls throughout the braid helps create a fuller, more balanced appearance instead of concentrating all the volume at the bottom. Some people also combine techniques by opting for a sew-in at the back of the head while using miracle knots around the front and hairline. This creates a lightweight, face-framing finish while reducing installation time.
Take a look through our style gallery below for all the inspiration you need to try miracle knots! styles.bysk
HOW LONG DO MIRACLE KNOTS LAST? With proper care, miracle knots can last between three and six weeks. Since much of the style consists of loose human hair, regular moisturising helps prevent dryness and tangling. Lightly misting the hair with water mixed with leave-in conditioner a few times each week can help maintain softness and reduce frizz. At night, loosely braiding or twisting the hair before covering it with a silk bonnet or scarf can minimise shedding and keep the curls looking fresh for longer. ARE MIRACLE KNOTS WORTH TRYING? While miracle knots don’t reinvent protective styling, they do offer a clever twist on existing crochet techniques. For those who love the relaxed, bohemian look but want a quicker, more affordable or beginner-friendly approach, it’s easy to see why the trend has taken off.

HOW TO CREATE MIRACLE KNOTS The process begins by sectioning clean hair into neat parts and braiding it into individual plaits. Some people choose to have this foundation completed professionally before finishing the crochet stage themselves at home, helping to reduce the overall cost of the style.

Here’s a snapshot of the interviews we’ve had with men changing the landscape of textured hair
Emmanuel Abimbola
Founder of Yinrin and master marketeer
I’ve worked as a social media manager, marketing manager, and content creator, so I’ve seen both sides of marketing. From my experience, people tend to avoid overly polished and scripted social media pages because they feel like one long advert. I’ve learned that social media should create the atmosphere of your brand rather than constantly trying to sell. That’s what UGC and paid advertising are for. I try to separate the two. On Yinrin’s social channels, I focus on relatable haircare journeys, community stories, and the occasional funny skit because that’s what people genuinely connect with. It feels more human, and that’s what the brand is about. “I documented my entire loc journey on YouTube and built a strong connection with my audience through that process. I even reacted to subscribers’ loc journeys, and that’s where the idea of documenting other people’s hair journeys came from. I wanted to create transparency around the real struggles people face with their hair, engage the community through relatable stories, and highlight the stylists and salons supporting natural haircare. Hair isn’t just about the result – it’s about the journey.”

DBITES Chester Charles
Founder of Patt3rn Up LDN and engineer of style
I’m an engineer, so working outside and having locs gave me an extra desire to protect my hair. Looking online I couldn’t find any cool stylish satin-lined beanies. All I could find was big bobble hats which didn’t really fit my style. A long story short I couldn’t find one, so I designed a few an everyone loved them. “Our hat designs our quite simple now focusing on sleek styling and hair protection. My logic is if you’re only protecting your hair during the night that’s only 40-45% of your day… what about the rest? Wearing one of our hats will provide protection all day without even thinking about it or having to wear a bonnet or durag outside. Our clothing is designed by my friend Lawrence and we do this all in-house. Each piece has a subtle mention to blackness in our design i.e. the Power to the People Tee.”

PCOS & hair growth

Let’s talk about it
With September marking PCOS Awareness Month, Janet Davies founder of Ominira Naturals shares why she started the Inner Circle, a hair health club for women contending with hormone imbalance and hair issues As a Black woman, I don’t speak about this from a distance. I’ve lived it, I’ve seen it in the women around me. The thinning edges that get dismissed. The heavy periods that get normalised. The underlying issues can point to PCOS, fibroids, hormonal imbalances, but it’s often the case women are left to figure out on our own. So, when I built Ominira Naturals, it was never
just about hair. It was about creating something that sees us. For women dealing with conditions like PCOS or fibroids, hair loss is rarely just about hair. It can knock your confidence, your identity. The way you show up in the world. I found a lot of the products marketed to us don’t take any of that into account. They

focus on quick results, ignoring what’s happening internally. So, I wanted to do things differently. We’re incredibly intentional about our ingredients, being mindful of what could potentially disrupt the body. Especially for women already navigating hormonal challenges. But if I’m honest, that’s just the starting

point. The real work is in education and the community. Through our Inner Circle, we have honest conversations about things that aren’t always spoken about openly. It’s any and everything; hormonal hair loss, PCOS, stress, nutrition. Not in a way that overwhelms, but in a way that helps women feel seen and supported. We give practical steps they can follow in their everyday life. And then there’s the in-person side of what we do. Last year’s Hair Growth Lab in New York was special because it brought everything together: hair, health, lifestyle, and sisterhood. You could feel the shift in the room when women realised they weren’t alone in what they were going through. This year, with Restore Her, we’re going even deeper. It’s not just an ‘event’. It’s an intentional space for women to
pause, to be poured back into, and to start looking at their hair and health in a more holistic way. Because so many of us carry so much and have been in survival mode for so long, we haven’t had the chance to ask, “am I actually well?” My hope is that women don’t just leave with products or information, but with a sense of clarity, and the permission to do things differently. To take their health seriously. To break generational cycles that have been passed down for years. So, when someone chooses Ominira, yes, they’re choosing great products. But more than that, they’re choosing to be part of something that understands them, priorities their wellbeing, and that is genuinely invested in seeing them whole. Not just looking good on the outside.
