Your donations provide competitive standards, curricula, training materials, tournament logistics, scholarships, awards, and so much more to these students. Because of your continued support, for the first time on March 15, 2016, the United States Senate recognized the importance of our activity by declaring National Speech and Debate Education Day. This now annual day is a celebration of everything you make possible for tens of thousands of students each year. Marshall Webb, 2016 graduate of St. Mary’s Hall (TX) and current student at the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, was the 2016 William Woods Tate, Jr., National Student of the Year. He also placed second in United States Extemporaneous Speaking at the 2016 National Speech & Debate Tournament.

However, Marshall’s biggest impact on the school may be his senior year Oratory.

“His speech was revolutionary in our community from the moment the idea sparked in him,” Colin Malinak, his coach, explains. Essentially, Marshall argued that we should move beyond tolerance and seek acceptance. "It was Marshall’s belief that tolerance no longer represented our community’s truth or what we should be striving toward.”

Marshall says that this moment, above any award or accolade, is the one of which he is most proud. He hopes the speech worked as an agent of change and made Saint Mary’s Hall a better place.

“When we have a community that starts to embrace telling our stories, and telling them in a way that matters and makes a difference, that kind of personal aspect really embraces all people. That’s how we can start going to a better place.”

The National Speech & Debate Association celebrated the first National Speech and Debate Education Day on March 15, 2016, a date recognized by a resolution of the United States Senate!

National Speech and Debate Education Day was created to recognize and celebrate the positive impact of speech and debate activities on students, schools, and communities.

Be authentic. Never lose your sense of humor, — Donus Roberts, coach

Donus’ eleventh diamond award is the first in the history of the National Speech & Debate Association. Under his leadership, students earned more than 31,000 points through speech and debate presentations, competition, and service. If you ask Donus about the award, he prefers not to make a big deal about it. In fact, he remains amazingly concerned whether he’s done enough.

“There’s been a lot of publicity about it and people are saying nice things,” Donus said. “With all of the awards I’ve received over the years, my only worry is that I’ve given enough back to deserve them.”

Donus developed his teaching ability from an early age, and he credits that to his father. An intellectual man with a modest career as a dirt farmer, Dan Roberts had a strong influence on Donus throughout his life. “He taught me a great deal about how to intellectually prepare.”

His father had a few favorite sayings that Donus took to heart over the years.

“He would say, ‘I’ve never met anyone who didn’t benefit from overlearning.’

Meaning, if you decide to study something, invest in it fully and learn all there is to know. Don’t just do enough to get by.” This approach is astonishingly evident throughout Donus’ time in speech and debate.

Jacquelyn “Jacci” Young is a four-diamond coach from Missouri and one of the best Interpretation coaches in the country. She has coached countless students to qualification at the National Speech & Debate Tournament, many to the semifinal and final rounds. She says she’s energized by working with students, especially the novices.

Jacci’s competitive success is second only to her service to the community, including tabulating at her district tournament, leading education sessions locally and nationally, and now serving as the co-emcee to the National Awards Assembly.

She says, “The best part of being an emcee for the National Tournament is the ability to represent women everywhere! I am so honored to be able to stand and present awards at a tournament where the future leaders of America are recognized.”
