While we are here to help with any issues or concerns you may have there are a few steps you can take at home to help keep your family healthy.

1. Check your medicine cabinets – Use the new year as a time to start fresh and check for any expired medications. Be sure to check the expiry date printed on the box and the instructions around storage, has it been kept at the wrong temperature or for too long after opening? Time to go! If you have any prescription medications that have expired bring these instore and we can help you dispose of them, this is also a great chance to replace anything you’ve had to throw out.

2. Repeats coming up? Some can be refilled here at the pharmacy so give us a call to see if you have any remaining repeats or if we can fill your prescription for you.

3. Kids back at school? Sometimes prevention is the best course of action! We have everything from kids’ multivitamins to headlice treatments so make sure to ask one of our team the best way to prep your little ones for the school term.

4. Wound care – Bumps and bruises are a common occurrence in any household so make sure you’re stocked up on a variety of dressings, band-aids, burn gels and antiseptics. We have great affordable options instore and our team can help find the best products for you and your family.

5. Stay Sun Safe – Did you know there are different sunscreens for different occasions? Check your sunscreen supply to make sure you have the right products for your family. It’s good to have a few different options when it comes to application, be it a pump, a spray or a roll-on. Sadly, headlice is a threat that never seems to go away! But, there are a number of easy steps you and your family can take to help tackle Headlice head-on!

Prevent 1. Headlice can only survive for 24hrs outside of your head. So mostly come from direct head to head contact, or through sharing things like pillows, combs, hats, brushes and towels. If you have headlice in your child’s school or in your household avoid these as much as possible.

2. Have long hair? Keeping your hair tied back or plaited can reduce the risk of infection as the lice struggle to find a good grip! Tea-Tree Oil and water are also a great preventative measure, mix a few drops in a spray bottle and apply liberally!

Attack 1. The level of infection will determine the strength of the product needed but common ingredients to look for are pyrethrins (natural extract) and permethrin lotion/mix (synthetic similar to pyrethrin).

2. Apply your treatments as specified on the packet and talk to us about the best approach for your case. Timing is everything!

3. A nit comb is always a great purchase with any treatment kit. These are great for removing the dead lice after treatment, and as most medicated treatments cannot be used on children under 2 the nit comb is your best weapon of choice Remove 1. After treatment remove dead or live lice with a nit comb 2. Avoid using regular shampoo for one to two days after treatment 3. Soak your combs and brushes in boiling water for 5-10 minutes after use 4. Keep checking for nits for 2-3 weeks are the final treatment.

Don’t let Hayfever control you summer!

• Check your local pollen count with a quick google search each morning, if it’s looking high pop an extra antihistamine in your bag for the day or take a saline nasal spray on the road.

• Pollen count is highest in the morning. Try taking your antihistamines before you go to bed, this way your antihistamines will be working from the moment you step outside.

• If you are particularly sensitive, try drying your washing inside to avoid bringing pollen back into the house.

Particularly when it comes to bedding.

Antihistamine Tablets/Liquids: are useful in alleviating some of the symptoms of hayfever.

They are helpful in controlling sneezing, itching and a runny nose, but are ineffective in relieving nasal blockage. They can be used alone or in combination with other medications, such as nasal sprays.

Corticosteroid (anti-inflammatory) Nasal Sprays: work best when used for prevention, just like an asthma inhaler. For example, they may be used for weeks or months at a time during an allergy season. Ask your pharmacist about the appropriate medication for your condition.

Decongestant Nasal Sprays: can be used to unblock the nose but should not be used for more than a few days at a time. Prolonged use may result in worsening of the nasal congestion.

Saline Nasal Sprays: can be used to treat a runny, blocked or irritated nose on the spot, great to use in conjunction with any of the above medicated treatments.

Eye Drops: Can be used to treat itchy or irritated eyes, there are a range of medicated eye drops that can be used so it is best to consult you pharmacist before selecting.
