SpecStudio is an independent UK-based specification writing practice delivering specifications for architectural and design practices worldwide. Combining experience and expertise with a passion for technology, what was once an analogue service is now fully digital.. With our extensive industry experience, we have successfully worked on projects across various sectors worldwide.

Our goal is to ensure that your specifications are tailored to your project's requirements, including procurement, design responsibility, and sustainability needs.

[The Story] Led by three ex colleagues, Matt Fox, Craig Brown and Richard Jackson, SpecStudio uses the latest technology to deliver 'proper' Specification Consulting services as a true independent practice that puts its Clients' needs first.

Together, these three individuals brought a tapestry of expertise to SpecStudio.

Each member of the team had a unique background, complementing one another and contributing valuable insights. The fusion of their skills created a powerhouse of competence that could tackle any challenge thrown their way.

Consulting/ Writing Outsourcing your project specifications to SpecStudio allows you to benefit from our extensive experience of preparing detailed specifications for Architects across virtually every industry sector on projects around the globe. Our experts ensure that the specification is tailored to suit the project procurement, design responsibility, sustainability requirements and that your drawings cover the correct level of information. We can prepare your specifications at any stage of the design process, usually either at Outline or Tender stage, in multiple formats (CAWS, Uniclass, CSI) to suit the project and regional requirements.

Reviews If you are happy preparing your own Specifications, but would like an independent review of them to check they are robust, accurate and aligned with the contract / procurement, then our Specification Review service is for you. This cost efficient service provides a structured review of your documents with a written report summarising the recommendations.

Office Masters Our experts can build your ‘office masters’ for you, compiled from a mix of your own experience combined with our industry leading knowledge and content. These are then yours to own and use on your projects moving forward. These specifications can be tailored to specific needs of your practice and be linked to in-house BIM objects, streamlining the process for future projects. If you then need help delivering the project specifications, we can be on hand as your dedicated resource when required, or help maintain it for future robustness.

BIM Integration In light of the growing significance of BIM adoption in the industry, SpecStudio offers a comprehensive suite of services aimed at aligning design practices with industry standards. We specialize in optimizing in-house documentation to meet the evolving demands of the field. Our eperts can write requirements and provide training to help you incorporate the data into a BIM model. This will aid the smooth transition between the tagging of 3D and 2D items in either a Uniclass or CAWS working environment.

Sustainable Specifications BREEAM, LEED, WELL, Estidama, Green Star, and NABERS are just a few of the sustainability certification programs our consultants have worked on projects that have earned. We can assist with the research of products and materials that comply to sustainability goals.

Training Structured training sessions tailored to any team's requirements are part of our services. From introductory sessions to advanced modules on specific topics, we aim to share our expertise and improve architects' understanding of specifications.

[FAQ] Does SpecStudio design? Is it spec-writing only?

We are not Architects or designers. At SpecStudio, we focus solely on all things Specifications. We are dedicated experts in our field that allows us to provide consistently high quality services to our clients.

Does SpecStudio hold PI?

When would be the best time to involve SpecStudio?

As a sub-consultant to Architects and designers, it is our professional responsibility to hold PI. We carry varying cover levels depending on our scope and the value of the project.

Specifications can be provided during RIBA Design Stages 2, 3, and 4. It is advisable to involve SpecStudio as early as possible so that the specification can be developed alongisde the design.

What format of specifications does SpecStudio provide?

How does SpecStudio link with BIM?

The team can provide specifications in CAWS, Uniclass 2015, CSI MasterFormat and Outline formats, using our own software and bespoke specification masters.

Via tailored keynote files that are uploaded into the model to link the spec clauses/ codes with model elements. The team can work closely with your in-house BIM co-ordinator and support you with your BIM journey.
