Last Thursday was the first night of Hanukkah. Rabbi Shnai Levitin welcomed community members to the Menorah Lighting and Chanukah Carnival in Queen Anne, at the corner of Crockett Street and Queen Anne Avenue. In addition to the menorah, they had music and crafts, a dreidel on stilts, a fire show, and lots of snacks for visitors: latkes, jelly donuts, cotton candy, chocolate coins.

The holiday season at Seattle Center is in full swing. The inaugural Seattle Christmas Market is delighting visitors, the Space Needle has just launched the Loupe Lounge, the trains are running at Winterfest Village in the Armory, dancers are gracing the stage at Pacific Northwest Ballet, and a new author is quietly enjoying the success of his first book.

Peter Boal has been the Artistic Director of the Pacific Northwest Ballet since 2005.

New art studio and gallery opens doors

Cati Art Studio & Gallery opened its doors in Magnolia for the first time on Nov. 18 displaying the paintings of owner Catalina Mercado. Painting fulltime for over 20 years and receiving a BFA from the University of Houston, Catalina participates in local art groups such as Puget Sound Group of Northwest Artists and Women Painters of Washington. Catalina brings her vision and dedication to support other artists achieve their goals whether in the gallery or in weekly classes.

Tuesday was the opening of a new monthly show welcoming northwest artists Barry Roitblat, Sue Madill, Gregg Goolsby, and Kim Tepe. The show goes on until Jan. 6 with a reception on Dec. 15, from 6-8 p.m.

Rabbi Shnai Levitin welcomed community members to the Menorah Lighting and Chanukah Carnival in Queen Anne, at the corner of Crockett Street and Queen Anne Avenue MENORAH from Page 1Æ Rabbi Levitin spoke about the two miracles of Chanukah while lighting the first candle.

First, the miraculous military victory to end the untenable oppression by the Greeks.

And then, finding the tiny cruse of oil that should have only lasted one day, but burned for eight days until more pure oil could be produced. He stressed that menorah lightings should be done in public, louder and prouder, because “Light dispels the darkness, especially this year in the wake of the largest Jewish massacre since the Holocaust.” He knows that some people here in Seattle are still feeling traumatized by the attacks and he reminds them to shine the light, do a mitzvah or good deed, and reach out to others to dispel hate. “Hate will appear more powerful if we do not shine light. It is beautiful to see the community expressing their support,” he said.

While the menorah was shining over the

carnival, the crowd was ushered back to a safe distance and Sage Viniconis came forward to demonstrate the power of breath and fire. Queen Anne resident Cynthia Albini called the carnival, “Amazing!” And added a reminder that, “If we all started to do good things together, things can change for the better.”

Chabad of Queen Anne and Magnolia is a community group and open to all. The Queen Anne Chanukah Village will come to life Wednesday, December 13. Community members are invited to meet at Chabad Center to pick up a map and other items for the scavenger hunt at participating businesses along Queen Anne Avenue. There will be raffle tickets, prizes, and treats along the way.

Guests are invited to meet back at the Chabad Center for a Chanukah Fair and candle lighting. This event is free but reservations are required. More information is available at chabadqueenanne.com.

This month I decided not to do an interview but rather write about something dear to my heart - getting a new pet for our family.

After our family had to help our 14-year-old dog cross the rainbow bridge last summer, I begged and pleaded with my parents to get a puppy.

They said no at first, but on my birthday weekend this October, we visited Resilient Hearts Animal Sanctuary in Fremont and found our perfect pup.

We named him Milo, even though his original name is Verde. We had to foster him for one week before we could choose to adopt him. Resilient Hearts provided all the supplies we needed, like toys, crate, bed, puppy pads, and food!

You can visit Resilient Hearts in Fremont Wednesdays through Sundays and meet the dogs or cats that are available to adopt or foster. I think that makes Milo so unique, and of course so cute!

BOOK from Page 1Æ for writing and ballet to create his memoir: Illusions of Camelot. “It is a book by a dancer, that incorporates dance, but is not about dance. It is about growing up and finding your path in life,” Boal says. Adding, “Anyone can feel that they don’t belong.”

Boal has danced with the greatest ballet companies in America and some of the most notable choreographers, including Twyla Tharpe, Jerome Robbins, and George Balanchine. While dance has played a major role in his story, this book is really about the young boy coming of age in a different time and coming to terms with his father’s addiction.

At a reading and book signing earlier this year, Marcie Sillman wasted no time diving into the meat of the story. “When you were young, it seemed you idolized your father. When did that change?” she asked. Boal tells the sad story of when his father showed up drunk at his performance with American Ballet Theater in Saratoga Springs. Although he had grown up in a community that had always covered for his father, the cracks were beginning to show. He loved his father but was angry at the addiction.

He recalls, “My father really loved me. He was a great parent, in snippets.”

Boal tells his readers that you are who you are because of the circumstances that make up a person. Growing up in the town of Bedford, he danced in and out of the levels of exclusions and privilege. As a child, he accepted it as the way the world works. But he knew that wasn’t the way he wanted it to be. Ballet became a beacon for Boal and he says it saved him in some ways. He felt it pulled him into a community of greater belonging.

In addition to being one of the largest and most respected ballet companies in the country, Pacific Northwest Ballet is also one of the most inclusive. While the effort to promote diversity and inclusion was already underway when Boal joined the company, they are currently working to change the landscape of the dance world. Because he remembers feeling different as one of only three boys in his class at School of American Ballet, he knows it is his job to help normalize traditionally

PNB has also had highly successful programs for dancers with Parkinson’s disease and Down syndrome. And audiences can see one of the most diverse ballet companies performing at McCaw Hall throughout the year.

Council celebrates start of holiday season

On a quiet Friday night, Cotto Belltown was bursting at the seams as they welcomed a large group of people for a Happy Hour to celebrate the start of the holiday season and introduce the new City Council to leaders who play a role in the success of the city. The standing room only crowd included leaders of the arts, medical community, colleges,

nonprofits, and major employers. The goal was to celebrate the city and everyone who lives, works, or plays here.

"The party was all about pulling people together to make merry and cheer on Seattle. We have had a rough few years, but 2024 is going to be a great year" says JJ McKay, a host of the party.

As the crowd chanted, “Sa-ra! Sa-ra! Sa-ra!” Seattle City Councilmember Sara Nelson stepped up to speak.

She congratulated the newly elected councilmembers and
