Aaron Bagley is an artist, illustrator, and author living and working in Queen Anne with his wife, Jessixa Bagley. Fans of the Queen Anne Farmer’s Market are likely familiar with Aaron’s work. For the past three years, his playful designs for the market posters have been all over the hill inviting guests to the market. The first of the special edition Harvest Markets will be this Saturday, Oct. 28, and the poster features fat pumpkins, cute forest critters, and evergreen decorations for the season.

Other Harvest Markets will be Saturdays (Nov. 18 and Dec. 16).

“The farmers market posters are really exciting,” Aaron said. He had long dreamed of doing the farmers market posters but it was quite the ordeal to be chosen since they only select a new artist once every four years. In 2020, artists were asked to submit some work online and provide a little background info. Aaron says he was lucky that a friend reminded him to apply and he ended up turning in his artwork less than an hour ahead of the deadline.

Spend Like It Matters- Intentionalist's Laura Clise presents Legacy Award

The Intentionalist, founded by Laura Clise, is an intentional guide to spending that champions small businesses and the diversity and talents of our local communities. Clise says “Spend like it matters” is intended to be a reminder that community members can vote with their dollars.

The Intentionalist makes it easy for consumers to spend their time and money supporting local businesses owned by women, people of color, LGBTQ, families, and disabled people.

This month, they celebrated with the first annual Intentionalist Awards.

The ceremony was held at the Central Library and hosted by Angela Poe Russell and Doug Baldwin Jr. In addition to the hearts and souls of the Seattle community, special guests included Mayor Bruce Harrell, Eighth Generation founder Louie Gong, Visit Seattle’s Ali Daniels, BECU’s President of DEI Jackie Martinez-Vasquez, and South Seattle Emerald’s Marcus Harris Green.

Instead of a “best of ” popularity contest, Clise wanted to recognize

the ways that small businesses are inspiring community leaders. There were awards in seven categories, including Community Over Competition, Rookie of the Year, and Legacy. “Presenting Shelley Brothers and Martha Manning with the Legacy Award is something that I will always remember. Wildrose opened in 1984 and is one of just over a dozen lesbian bars remaining in the U.S.” Clise said.

Survey: 68% of Seattleites don’t trust city to spend tax dollars responsibly

The latest quality of life survey from the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce reveals residents’ growing disdain for how the city is utilizing their tax dollars.

The survey was conducted by EMC Research, with 700 Seattle voters interviewed across each council district from Sept. 14-24.

When given the prompt “I trust the City of Seattle to spend my tax dollars responsibly,” 68% of respondents disagreed with the sentiment.

“68% of voters say they do not trust the city of Seattle to spend their tax dollars responsibly,” Seattle Metro Chamber President Rachel Smith told The Center Square in an email.

“Frustrations are increasing because Seattle voters want a plan and they want to see visible progress – it’s the lack of progress that erodes trust.”

The Chamber's Index survey also found 61% of voters believe that taxes in Seattle are too high for the level of

service that the city provides.

The Center Square previously reported on the chamber’s survey revealing public safety was listed as the second-most concerning issue at 48%, behind homelessness at 51%.

Only 3% voted for taxes as their most concerning issue.

Despite the rising concerns residents have for their communities, the survey indicates that there is not much trust in city leadership to solve the biggest issues facing Seattle. Only 15% of respondents agreed with the prompt, “I trust that the city has an effective plan to address the critical issues facing our city, like homelessness, affordability and public safety.”

“Crime and public safety as a top concern has increased substantially and has now become a sticking point,” Smith said. “To restore public trust, the city should invest tax dollars in a way that gets results on the mostpressing issues, and do so with transparency and accountability.”

Washington state to participate in IRS free Direct File pilot program

Washington is among 13 states invited to take part in a pilot program by the Internal Revenue Service for a free tax filing program next year.

The Direct File program will give taxpayers the option to electronically file their federal tax returns directly with the IRS at no cost.

“This is a critical step forward for this innovative effort that will test the feasibility of providing taxpayers

a new option to file their returns for free directly with the IRS,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel in a Tuesday news release.

One of the reasons the Evergreen State was chosen for the program is due to its lack of a state income tax, according to the IRS. Eight other states without an income tax – Alaska, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming – are IRS Page 7Æ

A CHANCE ENCOUNTER

T

his time of year, when stakes and strings hold up what’s overgrown in the garden, no matter how choked — and much of is — it’s the last of the cherry tomatoes that remind me how I could live without squash or pumpkins, but I could never live without tomatoes. Sprinkled with olive oil and salt, of course, but my favorite way to eat them is right off the vine with my feet in the dirt. The taste is a mix of late summer and fall and rivals anything wonderful I have ever eaten.

When you compare this taste to the grocery store version, bred not for flavor but for packing and shipping, it’s like one is a true love story and the other makes me think of faces that don’t know how to smile anymore.

When my dad built our family home, he planted the tomato garden before he laid the foundation.

Tomatoes, Italians know, are essential to day-to-day life. When I asked him why he planted the garden in back of the garage instead of behind the kitchen, he told me he didn’t want to feel — feel rather than hear — all the noise that went on in there. This was my first understanding of two things: That sound will bounce in much the

Yesterday, I was reminded of something else essential to Italians.

It was a revelation. And if anything demonstrates how we continue to learn about ourselves, like it or not, it’s a revelation. This one took place on a beach that is a 20-minute bicycle ride from the ferry landing on Bainbridge Island. It was there I met another Italian woman. She was beautiful, her looks were pure ethnicity. Her hand movements were pure Italian.

Naturally, we got to talking. Mostly in superlatives, at first — You are?! So am I! I thought so! It took only minutes for me to realize that what made the conversation so much fun was that we were allowed to interrupt each other and nothing about it felt rude or impolite. When I pointed this out, nearly breathless with delight, she reminded me that in Italian culture, it would be rude to not interrupt, “it would seem like you weren’t paying close attention,” she said.

This is absolutely true.

But it’s been so long since I’ve shared a meal with my extended family, I’d nearly forgotten. “So,” she adds, “it can be hard

I like the implication of it — enthusiasm rather than rudeness. And the best part of the revelation was that I saw how this kind of conversation is also essential, dare I say innate, for Italians.

There is something mysterious about a serendipitous revelation, but there is something even better about being just two of millions of Italians who understand a particular trait about ourselves. It made me wonder if we have any real control over who we are. We may think we have a lot, but maybe we don’t.

My husband is a mix of Scottish, English, and Irish. And if you Google what Scottish/English/Irish

conversational traits share in common, you will find this: “They like to engage in polite conversations.

It is best not to inquire about personal information upon meeting them.”

If he had been with me on the beach yesterday, once my revelation-giver and I became instantly intimate, he would have walked on to inspect the seaweed, quickly, as if he was afraid that we would attempt to engage him.

He is not breathless with delight, ever, though he does have his moments … but still, nowhere in his conversations are the emotions that brought him to his opinion unless I beg him to elaborate. Even then, it will take him 24 to 36 hours to figure out what he thinks he is feeling.

Though he’s not really sure.

Before this chance encounter, I was beginning to think there was something wrong with me to care so much about what is being said that I just can’t wait to interject and say exactly how I feel. Which is generally perceived as So Damn Rude.

When I called an Italian friend to tell her about my revelation, she said something that still makes me laugh, “All these people who want to tramp all over Rick Steves’ version

It’s hard to believe that I can start out by writing about tomatoes and end up here, but the very fact that the next time I just have to interrupt you, I will no longer feel like a very bad person, cheers me up no end.

He really loves the work by previous artists Frida Clements and Victory Gardens and said he enjoys creating the posters but it is not always easy.

“I really try to strike the balance between fun and stately.” Since the market likes a continuous theme for the four years of images, he decided to create a whimsical design with lots of details- people, animals, and oversized foods. He says the greatest thing about this gig is becoming such a part of the community when he joins events at the market and does poster signings. And he is looking forward to working with the Director of the Farmer’s Market, Matt Kelly, to help select the next poster artist and truly feel like a part of the legacy of this farmer’s market.

Aaron’s next big thing is a collaboration with his favorite longstanding partner, his wife Jessixa. They are known individually throughout the Seattle art world and have often partnered on special projects: from their first meeting as students at Cornish College of the Arts to the present, college art

shows to professional art shows, and designing their wedding invitations to publishing their debut graphic novel.

Duel was written by Jessixa and illustrated by Aaron. Simon &Schuster won the rights to publish from a lively auction crowded with 11 different publishing houses, exciting and unheard of for a debut novel.

Jessixa, who had already written several children’s books described this process as “very fun and kind of surreal!”

This book is an impressive 330 pages that tells the story of two sisters who have so much trouble getting along that they challenge each other to a duel. “And the story is told from the perspective of both sisters so each chapter alternates from the perspective of the older sister and younger sister.” Jessixa said. Besides the personal aspects of sibling rivalry, the book also draws on her own fencing experience.

Jessixa describes Aaron as the perfect partner because he is somebody that she could trust with the story. It was initially difficult for her to let go but she realized the story was already so personal that she didn’t want it to be like illustrating her own life. “I knew that he could give the

story what I needed visually.” she said.

Aaron describes this process of creating a graphic novel as being not for the faint of heart. He said it takes a lot of time and patience but he’s thankful for his talented partner, “I often say that Jessixa handed me a perfect manuscript to work from.”

The book has many universal themes and will be widely distributed.

Jessixa is also hopeful it will help spur broader interest in fencing: “It’s a sport that is both mental and physical” but “was not very inclusive and that there used to be active racism in it.” As a Black woman, she is very excited to know that there are many young people of color picking up a foil and many extraordinary Black fencers now. “My hope is that all kinds of kids will find fencing and that they will find a way to do it.”

The first stop of their book tour will be Sunday, Dec. 3, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Salle Auriol Fencing Club in Interbay, 1415 Elliott Ave W. Queen Anne Book Company will be the sponsoring bookstore.
