Fountainhead Art Gallery exhibition features Gage Academy Atelier alumni Legislative session in full swing

Throughout the month of January, Fountainhead Art Gallery on Queen Anne features selected new paintings by recent graduates of Seattle’s Gage Academy of Art Atelier programs.
An
Fountainhead Gallery opened in 1996 with an emphasis on representational art. They soon began issuing calls for artists to submit work for the still life, landscape and figure group shows they were scheduling at the time.
Many of the artists who submitted work were Gage instructors or students. Over time, the Gallery established a cooperative relationship with Gage Academy which eventually lead to scheduling multiple group shows of Gage Atelier graduates who Fountainhead felt were producing very high-quality work. The Gallery has added several Gage alumni and/or instructors to their list of artists they represent.
The current show is a juried exhibit highlighting work of 14 artists. Several of the participating artists shared that their decision to attend a Gage Atelier program was a lifechanging event.
Nick Reisland, one of the featured artists, was an Emergency Room Physician for several decades, until he retired to follow his life-long dream of becoming a painter.
He comments:
“Since seeing a Gerhard Richter exhibition in Chicago in 2002, I knew that I wanted to paint. The intensity of my job didn't allow that until I retired in 2014 and that's when we moved to Seattle. Though many artists are self-taught, I felt that it would be a good idea to inject some knowledge and discipline in my artistic strivings which, to me, meant going to art school. I chose Gage. I took a couple of introductory courses and then decided to enroll in an Atelier (40 hours per week for 3 years).
“I enjoyed my time at Gage, though it was
difficult. Human figure and representation is emphasized in most of their courses. We had the opportunity to draw/paint from human models every afternoon in the "Life Room". Our director, Mark Kang-O'Higgins, was excellent and encouraged a more contemporary approach

Washington State’s 36th Legislative District has three elected champions in Olympia for the 2024 legislative session: Senator Noel Frame, Representative Liz Berry, and Representative Julia Reed. While working on issues for the state and local communities, they also try to remain accessible and accountable to the public. On Saturday, the trio hosted a combined Town Hall Event at the Nordic Museum in Ballard.
Members of the community came out to hear from the legislators and were given an opportunity to ask questions. Even though this year’s session is a short one, all three have been busy in Olympia advancing the priorities of our district.
Liz Berry is the LD36 State Representative elected in 2019. She is a champion for gun safety, protecting our environment, and standing up for working families. Last week, Berry hosted a rally on the Capitol steps to support one of the bills she is sponsoring this session: HB 2049 the reWRAP Act.

A new way to choose seeds
It’s that wonderful time of year. No, not the holidays. For gardeners, the most wonderful time of the year is January, when we are knee-deep in seed catalogs dreaming of the bounty to come. Or nowadays, with more companies opting for online catalogs to save paper, it may look like you have 11 tabs open on your computer and you are making your list and checking it twice.
The dreaming is the same. Your garden is limitless, you have any conditions requested by the seed description, and you have all the time to plant the seeds you order – because it’s all in the future.

WHO DOES IT HELP?
Those components feel like old friends – I know I will likely overorder in my enthusiasm, but seeds generally keep a good long time, several years usually. But this year, a new awareness has crept in to my purchasing.
A side effect of interviewing so many wonderful landscape designers and curators for the stories I write is that I learn how some of the people at the forefront of the green industry are making their plans.
One throughline coming through loud and clear among trends, industry marketing, and interviews like the ones mentioned, is the idea that our choices can make a difference.
The plants we choose and the way we plant and care for them can help increase habitat, food equity, improve soil degradation and stem the pollution of local waterways, and help restore some of the biodiversity we are losing due to climate change.
I used to buy any sunflower that took my fancy in a catalog. All the better if a variety was early and/or multiple branching (more flowers, sooner), or pollenless (less mess when used in bouquets). All these benefits– better display, productivity, and harvest – were for me.
A SUNFLOWER SUPERPOWER
I recently read about 2023 studies saying sunflower pollen helps protect bees (both honeybees and bumblebees) from two different mites – serious contributors to bee decline. (Interestingly, other members of the sunflower family, including dandelions, with similar spike- shaped pollen, also had a lesser effect.) However, pollen is intentionally bred out of some ornamental varieties to appeal to
Helpfully, many catalogs are going out of their way to identify benefits for pollinators, perhaps specifying bird, bee, or butterfly. Some of the best will explain specific beneficials a plant supports, like sweat bees, or Monarch butterflies.
I found myself highlighting the ones that attracted more than one category, though it’s not a dealbreaker if it only supports one.
Finding native plant species is a great start to supporting your local ecosystem. After all, your neighborhood fauna evolved with its flora. Note here we’re talking about locally native to reap the most local benefit for pollinators which feed on unique plants. There are generalist pollinators which will feed and nest on multiple plants, so you can still feed some pollinators while growing non-native. The mint family (Lamiaceae) and the aster family (Asteraceae) have many examples of these.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:
To reduce my dependence on my water hoses, I will be rationing out the sections of the garden I’m willing to give supplemental water in the summer. This includes all container plants and those planted in the last year or two, as well as tomatoes and dahlias. Because of all those containers, new plants should be drought-tolerant once established, and need little in the way of supplemental organic matter or fertilizer.
So, monardas may have to wait for me, but zinnias, yarrows, poppies and calendulas are fairly drought-adapted.

HERE’S MY NEW CHECKLIST:
Does it help feed beneficial insects or pollinators?
Bonus points for a Northwest native. Maybe one bonus point for being native to the U.S.
More bonus-points for being openpollinated, so I can save the seed
for next year, versus an F1 hybrid which will not “come true”.
Bonus points if it will self-sow.
THINGS THAT COULD STRIKE IT OUT OF CONTENTION:
Does it require extra water or fertilizer?
Is it poisonous?
After these are satisfied, I’ll look for beauty, fragrance, height, productivity, and ease of growing, which will create a beautiful garden reaping benefits this year
and for many more to come.

Virginia Carol (Smith) Haley-Kanigel Nagel
It is with great sadness and enormous gratitude that we announce the passing of Virginia Carol (Smith) Haley-Kanigel Nagel on January 5th, 2024. She was born the eldest of six children on August 8th, 1943 to the late Thomas Emmett and Virginia Belle Smith of Aurora, Illinois. She was a proud graduate of the all-girls Catholic Madonna High school in Aurora and St. Louis University. Virginia was an accomplished Physical Therapist, mastering her craft in a career that spanned more than fifty years.
Virginia created a strong community of friends wherever she went and loved to connect and “talk story” with all. Her passions extended to travel, gardening, long walks, and shopping local farmers markets. She had great appreciation for a strong Americano and a nice glass of wine! After surviving two husbands, Tom Haley and Dave Kanigel, Virginia reconnected with her highschool sweetheart, Ken Nagel in 2020. They rekindled their relationship and married in October of 2022, in Plano, Illinois, not far from where they grew up during their high school years. Virginia was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021. She fought bravely with chemotherapy, radiation, and a mastectomy and lumpectomy, but the cancer recently returned in an aggressive form. After careful consideration, Virginia refused further treatment and courageously chose to leave this life on her own terms. She was surrounded by family in her final weeks and passed peacefully at the home she shared with Ken in Plano.
Virginia’s deep kindness, natural curiosity, sincere interest in everyone she met, and fierce independence will be greatly missed by the many she touched, and she will continue to serve as an inspiration to those of us who knew her best. She is survived by her three daughters, Shannan Gabrielle Whalen, Virginia McGrath Onstott, and Erin Haley-Wright; two stepdaughters, Kim Kanigel-Winner and Kara Copanas; six adoring grand-children, Jack and Taylor Onstott, Ryan, Connor, and Hudson Whalen, and Taavi Winner; husband, Ken Nagel; and siblings, Marci Hoffner, Tom Smith, Sue Gleason, Ruth Coan, and Terri Drahn. Magnolians possibly have a chance for more City Council influence moving forward with new City Council. It is totally up to us!
After months of insistence and an active campaign by the MCC and the Magnolia Chamber to keep Magnolia a unsplit city council district we finally need to realize the lemon many thought we were being dealt may have really been a long, tall glass of lemonade.
Having two city council members (Councilpersons Kettle and Strauss) listening to the needs of their Magnolia constituents is a blessing.
I can envision a newly designed community structure being designed by Magnolian leaders that prioritizes and unifies our now two constituencies in an even more effective way of working w the City Council then we have ever had!
This is an opportunity! Magnolians can choose to move forward with vision, purpose and political acumen. They can use resources to unite Magnolia and with coordinated, articulate messaging influence two Council members now obligated to include us in their constituencies.
But, it remains in the hands of those Magnolians stepping forward as our leaders, their connections, effective efforts to educate, engage, and unite the whole Magnolia community, stay on top of issues, and build true working collaborative relationships w our two districts/council members to be effective. We can speak with one voice!
With at-large members and our two council members to advocate for us we technically have a majority of the council aware and fighting for Magnolia needs! Sounds like lemonade to me!

to recycle can be difficult, this bill creates an extended producer responsibility (EPR) program for packaging and products to shift some of the burden from the public. This bill will join four other states (ME, CO, CA, OR) in bringing manufacturers and brands together to fund statewide recycling services, reduce packaging and paper, and help ensure that materials are effectively recycled. The reWRAP Act will reduce the burden of cities and counties while increasing recycling access and education for residents throughout the state, especially the underserved rural and unincorporated areas.
Representative Julia Reed was elected in 2021 and has been working on worker’s rights and public safety. She recently introduced HB 2025, a bill that will pay college students to work as “near peers” in their communities and local high schools. And is working with Senator Noel Frame on a bill to increase worker and public safety in construction zones, five years after four people were killed while crews were dismantling
Seattle streetcar project price tag jumps 43% to more than $400M

Following a recent assessment of Seattle’s Culture Connector streetcar project, the cost estimates related to the project have increased to over $400 million.
The Culture Connector streetcar project intends to connect the South Lake Union and First Hill Streetcar lines. By connecting these streetcar routes, the Seattle Department of Transportation expects city residents and visitors to have an easy and affordable way of traveling in the downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods.
The project cost estimate is increasing 43% from an original estimate of $286 million in 2019 to $410 million in December, following the project assessment. Out of the $410 million, $10 million would go toward additional design, $52 million for areaways, $38 million for work to the Jackson Street Bridge, $74 million for utility work, and the remaining $236 million would go towards core project construction and vehicle procurement.
According to a ridership forecast for the streetcar system, there is potential for an increase in ridership along the entire Seattle Streetcar line from South Lake Union to Capitol Hill. With the inclusion of the Culture Connector, systemwide ridership is anticipated to double from 14,000 to nearly 28,000 daily riders.
The Seattle Department of Transportation is currently seeing a steady rebound of ridership on the First Hill Streetcar, while the $56.4 million South Lake Union Streetcar’s ridership is increasing at a slower pace. In comparison, the First Hill Streetcar’s ridership was up to a little over 1.1 million riders in 2022, whereas the South Lake Union Streetcar’s ridership saw a little less than 200,000 riders in 2022.
“Based on the evaluation of observed ridership associated with major events at the stadiums, along the existing First Hill Streetcar line and nearby transit services, the analysis concluded that Culture Connector could draw an additional 7% to 15% of its average daily ridership during these events,” the transportation department stated in a press release.

The Washington State PTA Advocacy Day brought students and families from all over the state to take a closer look at how our laws are made and to raise awareness for the issues that students face in Washington’s public schools. Rep Reed started by offering the kids a seat at the table. Then she asked them to share their favorite things about school and something that they might want to improve. The disparities in PTA spending were clear even from such a small sample group: one student said she liked
getting two books from the library each week and another wished they had a librarian so their class could go to the library more often. With the current lack of funding, PTAs are left to fill the gaps and pay for the staff to provide library time, tutors, nurses, and other specialists. RENOVATIONS ONGOING
Regulars of the Starbucks at 2135 Queen Anne Ave N will need to find an alternate place to gather for the next few weeks. Last week, the store closed its doors and covered the windows for a renovation. The update will offer new flooring and furniture to complement the new counter set up designed to facilitate the mobile orders. They are expecting to reopen at the end of March.
Meanwhile, Queen Anne residents are still in luck: there is no shortage of coffee shops at the top of the hill. Cafe Hagen is directly across the street and opens every morning at 7 a.m. Cafe Ladro is a few doors down and opens at 6:30 a.m. Moonrise Bakery and Queen Anne Coffee Shop are in the 1800 block of Queen Anne Ave and also open at 7 a.m. Coffee Mind is down at 1907 10th Ave W. And the earlier risers can get their fix at Caffe Fiore 224 W Galer starting at 6 a.m.
And of course, anyone that needs a specific Starbucks drink can find it at over 100 locations in Seattle.

“In 2014 I happened upon an ad for an exhibition at Fountainhead of paintings by a watercolor artist named Tom Hoffmann, who also happened to be a Gage faculty member. That was my discovery of this gallery. I very much like this gallery.
“I like many of the artists Fountainhead represents. I especially like the venue and it was great to meet the owners at last week's opening. Actually, I never really expected to be able to show my work in this gallery. Self-doubt is a major obstacle for many an artist. In fact, I had entered a show two years earlier but was rejected. So, this time I was surprised to be accepted.”
Aleksandra Saronjic, an artist in the Fountainhead Gallery show, writes:
I graduated three years ago from KOH Contemporary Atelier. In addition to receiving excellent practical knowledge and experience during my four years of studies, Gage Academy gave me a sense of belonging and a permanent membership to their art community.
An exhibition at Fountainhead Gallery, a prominent art gallery in Seattle, presented an opportunity to show our latest works to a broader audience. It is wonderful to be part of the Gage Academy alumni community, and have their support after graduation, at this early stage of our careers. I have two paintings in this show.
“Everything Changes” and “Restlessness”.
Stephen Galey, a retired architect noted that when the Pandemic hit Seattle in 2020, Gage Academy was forced to temporarily shut
down all its programs. That was just the time when Stephen had contemplated becoming a student at Gage, so his dream was delayed until Gage reopened.
“Fortunately, all of the painters and models were masked, and no one contracted Covid-19,” he said. “It was a great way to spend the pandemic!”
He added that that the instructor emphasized the importance “to tell stories which have the ability to touch people. That is exactly what I wanted to do.”
The Gallery founders/owners, Sue and Ron Peterson commented: “We highly value our long-established relationship with Gage Academy's founders, staff and students and look forward to continuing this collaboration far into the future.”
