BENEFITS TO LIBRARY PATRONS

The new ILS will provide more stability for Library services and significantly reduce the likelihood of service disruptions. The new system will also be more secure and up-to-date thanks to regular cloud-based updates and enhancements. Other benefits to Library patrons include: • New account management features, such as more convenient opt-in text notifications. • Improved borrowing and account management for Mobile Services patrons. • More detailed location information about items in the catalog, which will make it easier to find materials, especially in larger locations like the Central Library. • Future enhancements, such as the ability for patrons to set their own secure account password. Patrons are currently limited to a 4-digit pin. During this project, the Library is also implementing new self-checkout stations at all Library locations, which will be easier to use, more reliable, and better supported by its vendor. A full list of impacts and timeline for expected restoration will be available at www.spl.org/update on Sept. 6, which patrons can check throughout the project.

The Palms is named for the unusual palm trees already on the property. “Building something from the ground up always comes with surprises, and The Palms was no exception,” Gilder said. “There were plenty of moments when we had to problem-solve, adjust and figure things out as we went. That’s part of any project of this scale, but it was also part of what made it so rewarding.” The Palms is named for the unusual palm trees already on the property. That detail became part of the center’s personality, shaping a design concept that blends Palm Springs brightness with Pacific Northwest references. “One of the things I love most about The Palms is the design,” Gilder said. “Sierra and Kyle have always loved Palm Springs, and they wanted to bring some of that energy to Seattle while still making the space feel distinctly Pacific Northwest.” The building includes colorful details, custom design elements and an

n September, The Seattle Public Library will transition to a new integrated library system (ILS), the behind-the-scenes system that manages collections, circulation, and patron accounts. The Library will replace its current ILS, which has been in use for over 20 years and is no longer supported by its vendor, with a new and more reliable, secure, and efficient system. This major IT infrastructure project will begin at 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 6 and conclude in early October, with most service impacts occurring through mid-September. All Library locations are closed on Monday, Sept. 7 for Labor Day. During this project, Library buildings will be open as scheduled, programs will continue, and patrons will be able to browse our collections, check out materials from Library staff, and use meeting rooms, study rooms, public computers, Wi-Fi, printers, and scanners. Patrons can continue to check out e-books and e-audiobooks without interruption through the Libby app. However, due to the scope and complexity of this project, some Library services will be temporarily disrupted, including access to patron accounts, the ability to place holds on physical materials, some online services, self-checkout stations, and pick-up lockers. Patrons will also need to bring their physical or digital library card when checking out materials during this time. **Please see the Library’s blog post about this project for a detailed list of what services will and won’t be affected. Because of these disruptions, the Library will extend due dates. We encourage patrons to hold onto their materials a little longer than normal until the project is complete in early October. The Library is fine-free thanks to the 2019 Library Levy. The ILS project is made possible by funds allocated in the 2019 Library Levy, and it is an important goal of the Library’s 2024-2033 Strategic Plan. This major system upgrade will cost $2.96 million.

ickleball has been popping up on tennis courts, playgrounds and community-center floors across Seattle for years. Now Interbay has a new home for pickleball. Pickle at the Palms, a new 20-court indoor pickleball center at 3435 15th Ave. W., has opened just south of the Ballard Bridge. The facility was developed by Seattle Storm majority owner Ginny Gilder, her daughter Sierra Keeler and son-in-law Kyle Schraeder as a yearround destination for players of all ages and skill levels. The center combines competition-level courts with coaching, technology, food and beverage service, event space and a design style that feels more Palm Springs than a rainy-day gym. “Sierra, Kyle and I are thrilled to introduce The Palms to the Seattle community,” Gilder said in the opening announcement. “It was built on a simple belief that sports have the power to bring people together. We set out to create Seattle’s first purpose-built indoor pickleball center, but our vision was always bigger than a place to play. We wanted to create a place to gather, connect and build community.” That larger vision is visible throughout the building. The Palms has 20 indoor courts across two floors, with PlaySight technology and large-format screens on every court so players can review games and work with coaches. Court lighting was designed for visibility with diffused, zero-glare illumination, and acoustic engineering was built to dampen pickleball sound by more than 50%. The building also includes a lobby pro shop, restrooms, private shower rooms, a mezzanine-level Loft lounge and Mainstay Provisions at The Palms, an all-day café on the same floor as the upper courts and views of the family’s BECU Storm Center. For the ownership team, the challenge was not just fitting pickleball courts inside a building. It was creating an experience.

Pickle at the Palms was developed by Seattle Storm majority owner Ginny Gilder, her daughter Sierra Keeler, son-in-law Kyle Schraeder and their son. east-facing mural by Seattle artist Sam Wood Wilson inspired by the movement of pickleball. Artwork installations in the lobby and elevator lobby were created by Seattle creatives House of Sorcery. The goal, Gilder said, was to make the space feel “joyful and a little unexpected,” not like a traditional sports facility. That matters because The Palms is not designed only for serious players. Fall programming begins Sept. 1 and includes co-ed, men’s and women’s leagues, clinics, junior programs and a four-week Beginner Series with small-group coaching followed by guided open play. “We really wanted to take away some of the intimidation that can come with trying a new sport,” Gilder said. “The goal is for someone to walk in thinking, ‘I’ve never played before,’ and leave thinking, ‘I can do this,’ with confidence.” Schraeder, the center’s general manager, said The Palms is designed to let people use the space in different ways. “We’ve designed The Palms to make it easy for people to play pickleball however they want, whether that means booking a court with friends, joining an open play session, signing up for a league or taking their first lesson,” Schraeder said in the opening announcement. Membership is available for players who want longer reservation lead times and lower pricing, but people do not have to be members to play. The fact sheet lists core memberships at $250 per year for adults and $150 per year for juniors ages 5 to 17, with members and nonmembers paying as they play. The social side is just as intentional. Mainstay Provisions at The Palms is the third location from Ballard locals Thom

Koschwanez and Ashley Thompson, joining existing cafés in Ballard and Denny Triangle. The café will offer sandwiches, salads, pastries, desserts, espresso drinks, smoothies, beer, wine and bottled cocktails. Gilder said Mainstay and The Loft help make the facility more than a place to reserve a court. “We didn’t want pickleball to be the only reason someone comes through the door,” she said. “Mainstay Provisions at The Palms gives people a space to grab great coffee, drinks or a meal and watch the action on the courts, while The Loft creates a space to relax, connect or host a private event.” Early response, Gilder said, has come from experienced players looking for more indoor court access and from firsttimers curious about trying the sport. Visitors have also responded to the building’s look, including the mural, colors and design details. For Interbay, the opening adds another sports destination near the BECU Storm Center for Basketball Performance, around the corner from The Palms. Gilder said the team is focused for now on building the foundation for The Palms, then letting partnerships and community programs grow from there. A year from now, she said success would look simple. “I’d love for The Palms to become one of those places that people simply think of when they’re deciding what to do,” Gilder said. “Maybe it’s a Tuesday night game with friends, a sandwich and a drink after work, a weekend activity with the kids or an event with neighbors.” In other words: not just pickleball, but “I’ll see you at The Palms.”

Savvy Senior: Simple Ways

to Soothe Bunion Pain

By Jim Miller Dear Savvy Senior, I’m a 62-year-old woman and have had a bunion on my big toe for years, but lately it’s become more painful and is making it hard to find comfortable shoes. I’d like to avoid surgery if possible. What can I do to ease the discomfort and keep it from getting worse? —Sore Toe Susan

Y

Dear Susan, ou’re not alone. Bunions are very common, especially among women, and they often become more painful with age as the joint shifts out of alignment and inflammation sets in. What may have started as a minor nuisance can turn into ongoing discomfort, making it difficult to find shoes that fit comfortably. A bunion, known medically as hallux valgus, is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe when the joint moves out of place, causing the toe to angle inward. Over time, this pushes the joint outward, creating the noticeable bump. WHY IT HAPPENS

While tight or narrow shoes can make bunions worse, they’re usually not the root cause. Genetics plays a major role, which is why bunions often run in families. Other factors like flat feet, arthritis, and past foot injuries can also contribute. Women tend to be more prone to them, partly due to years of wearing high heels or shoes with narrow toe boxes. The good news is that most bunions can be managed without surgery, especially if your goal is to ease symptoms and slow their progression. SIMPLE RELIEF

The first place to start is with your shoes. Switching to footwear with a wide toe box, soft materials, and good arch support can make a big difference, while high heels and tight shoes that crowd your toes should be avoided. It can also help to shop later in the day, when your feet are slightly swollen, for a more realistic fit. Beyond footwear, a few simple steps can help ease the pressure. Padding the area with

over-the-counter bunion cushions can reduce friction, and if the joint becomes sore or swollen, icing it for 10 to 15 minutes a few times a day may bring relief. Anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen can also help, if your doctor says they are appropriate for you. To further reduce strain, orthotic inserts, either store-bought or custom, can improve how your foot distributes weight. Toe spacers can also help by keeping the toes in a more natural position, while a night splint, such as Dr. Scholl’s Bunion Relief & Toe Corrector (about $20), can gently guide the big toe into better alignment while you sleep. It may also help to rotate your shoes rather than wearing the same pair every day, reducing repeated pressure. In addition, gentle exercises, such as stretching your toes, picking up small objects, or rolling your foot over a tennis ball, can help maintain flexibility. It is important to keep expectations realistic. These steps will not eliminate a bunion, but they can make it more manageable. WHEN TO GET HELP

If your bunion pain interferes with daily activities, or if you are developing corns, calluses or ongoing inflammation, it is wise to see a podiatrist or orthopedic specialist. They can evaluate the severity and recommend additional treatments. Also seek care if you notice redness, warmth or significant swelling, which could signal irritation or infection around the joint. Surgery is typically advised only when conservative measures no longer provide relief. Today’s procedures are more advanced than in the past and are often done on an outpatient basis, though recovery can up to six months and bunions can sometimes recur. In the meantime, taking steps to protect your feet can go a long way. With the right care, many people are able to manage bunions effectively and stay comfortable, active and on their feet.

Send your questions or comments to questions@savvysenior.org, or to Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070.

We Heart Seattle Faces State Investigation After Years of Controversy Seattle residents may know the nonprofit for hauling tons of garbage and discarded needles out of neighborhood greenbelts. Now, state investigators are examining the safety of their work.

A DEEPLY DIVISIVE HISTORY

We Heart Seattle began in 2020 as a volunteer litter-pickup effort founded by Andrea Suarez. It did not remain an ordinary neighborhood cleanup group for long. In 2021, Seattle officials asked We Heart Seattle to stop some of its cleanup and outreach activities, warning that uncoordinated outreach could interfere with efforts to move people indoors. The city also stressed that its encampment workers receive specialized training involving needles, hazardous debris

and de-escalation - work it did not encourage volunteers to undertake. We Heart Seattle refused to stop. The controversy continued. By 2024, KIRO Newsradio devoted a three-part investigation, In Plain Sight, to We Heart Seattle. Its reporting examined allegations that the nonprofit destroyed unhoused people’s belongings, questions about oversight and accountability, and the organization’s relationship with former president Kevin Dahlgren. Dahlgren had served as We Heart Seattle’s president and was paid nearly $30,000 for consulting work in 2022. After leaving the organization, he faced criminal charges in Oregon related to his previous employment with the City of Gresham. He later pleaded guilty to crimes including identity theft, theft and official misconduct. Those crimes were unrelated to We Heart Seattle, and there is no evidence the organization participated in them. But the prosecution added another controversy to an organization already facing intense scrutiny over its practices and leadership. Throughout it all, We Heart Seattle continued operating and attracting volunteers and supporters. Suarez has repeatedly rejected portrayals of the organization as reckless or harmful, and the nonprofit says it has helped people move off the streets while removing enormous quantities of garbage, needles and other hazardous debris from public spaces. The result is an organization with two dramatically different public

reputations: to supporters, We Heart Seattle goes into places government has neglected and does difficult work others won’t. To its harshest critics, its intervention in homeless encampments has itself caused harm. Now the state is examining another part of that work.

WE HEART SEATTLE

I

n May 2023, more than 120 volunteers participating in the One Seattle Day of Service joined the nonprofit in the Southwest Queen Anne Greenbelt, removing more than 10,000 pounds of garbage and hundreds of needles. We Heart Seattle had also previously worked in MacLean Park and the Northwest and Northeast Queen Anne greenbelts, including a 2021 effort in which the organization reported removing nearly 30,000 pounds of debris. Queen Anne & Magnolia News covered those efforts. What our coverage largely did not include was the turmoil elsewhere in the city. That history has become relevant again as the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries investigates allegations involving workers’ handling of hypodermic needles and fentanyl-related paraphernalia during the nonprofit’s cleanup operations.

STATE INVESTIGATES CLEANUP SAFETY

L&I says it opened an inspection after receiving an outside referral alleging that workers improperly handled drug paraphernalia during We Heart Seattle cleanup operations. A second related inspection involves Uplift Northwest, a staffing organization that has supplied workers for We Heart Seattle projects. Investigators are examining whether workers handling potentially hazardous materials were provided the protections required under state workplace-safety rules. Records requested by the state include We Heart Seattle’s accidentprevention program, bloodbornepathogen procedures, personal protective equipment assessments, employee training and safetymeeting records and documentation concerning hepatitis B vaccinations. The city warned that encampment cleanup involved risks from needles and other hazardous debris and emphasized that its own workers were specifically trained for that environment. Now, state workplace-safety regulators are asking We Heart Seattle to document how the people performing that work are protected.

Suarez says We Heart Seattle follows procedures for hazardous materials, including placing needles in sharps containers and separating drug paraphernalia from ordinary garbage. She has pointed to the organization’s six-year history of cleanup work and says workers have remained unharmed. She has also publicly questioned the motivation for the investigation, suggesting it could be a “political hit” against an organization that has become increasingly outspoken about homelessness and drug policy.

For We Heart Seattle, the investigation brings the organization back to a question that has followed it almost from the beginning. The debate has never really been about whether Seattle’s parks and greenbelts should contain mountains of garbage and discarded needles. It has been about who should be doing this work, what rules they should operate under and what happens when something goes wrong. This time, the state is asking those questions.
