Police now believe at least three people exchanged gunfire during the Bite of Seattle; one suspected shooter died and another remains unidentified
T
hree people were killed and four others wounded when gunfire erupted outside the Seattle Center Armory during the final evening of the Bite of Seattle. Seattle officials initially reported that two people exchanged gunfire at approximately 6 p.m. Sunday, July 26. During a Monday briefing, Mayor Katie Wilson and Seattle police said investigators now believe at least three people fired weapons in the crowded public space. A 15-year-old boy was detained following the shooting and booked into juvenile detention for investigation of first-degree assault and firearms violations. Police believe a 19-year-old man who died at the scene was also involved in the gunfire and was acquainted with the teenager. Investigators are searching for at least one additional unidentified shooter. Police said the shooting may have resulted from a gang-related confrontation rather than an indiscriminate attack on festival attendees. Authorities emphasized there was no ongoing danger to the public. A 44-year-old man also died at the scene. A 56-year-old woman later died at Harborview Medical Center. Four other people were struck by gunfire. They included a 2-year-old boy, a 23-yearold man and a 39-year-old woman. Another wounded person independently sought treatment at UW Medical Center. Officials said Monday that three of the surviving victims had been released from hospitals. The toddler remained hospitalized in satisfactory condition. The gunfire triggered panic across the crowded festival grounds. People who identified themselves publicly as attendees described crowds running in multiple directions as families searched for safety. Some reported seeing people fall or being knocked down or trampled in the rush to escape. It was not immediately known whether anyone required hospital treatment for injuries sustained while fleeing. Officers already assigned to the festival heard the shots and responded within seconds. Police recovered two firearms and took the 15-year-old into custody. “Our officers were there within seconds,” Acting Police Chief Tyrone Davis said following the shooting. “They performed emergency aid to the wounded until the Seattle Fire Department was on scene.” Detectives with the Seattle Police Department’s Homicide Unit and Gun Violence Reduction Unit are leading the investigation with assistance from the FBI, Washington State Patrol and other agencies. The violence brought a sudden and chaotic end to the three-day food and

agnolia Summerfest returns July 31 through Aug. 2, bringing three days of live music, food, family activities, vendors and one of the neighborhood’s biggest annual traditions back to Magnolia Playfield. This year, organizers are asking visitors to take note of two changes to the festival’s community code of conduct. The rule changes are intended to keep the playfield safer, more accessible and more welcoming for the large crowds expected throughout the weekend. Organizers say personal pop-up tents have become increasingly common in recent years, with some groups setting up chairs, tables, food and drinks in ways that resemble private tailgates inside the public festival space. While that may seem harmless to the people who arrive early and claim a spot, organizers say it limits shared space at an event that already has thousands of people
moving through a small area filled with performances, vendors, children’s activities and community programming. Visitors are still encouraged to bring chairs and picnic blankets. The festival will also offer “Share the Shade” tents
to help provide shaded gathering areas without turning large sections of the playfield into private camps. Organizers note that fire marshal rules require tents to have enough space between them for
safe evacuation, and that clusters of tents are prohibited. They also cited concerns about alcohol being served and consumed openly in private tent

The Blue Angels Are Back: Where to Watch Seattle’s Loudest Summer Tradition
F
or one long summer weekend, Seattle becomes a city of people looking up. The Blue Angels return to the Seafair Air Show July 31 through Aug. 2, with practice runs scheduled July 30. The jets are expected to perform over Lake Washington Friday, Saturday and Sunday, following demonstrations and hydroplane racing centered around Genesee Park. Lake Washington is the heart of the action, but the roar will carry well beyond the official festival grounds. People hear the Blue Angels before they see them. Conversations pause. Phones come out. Everyone suddenly becomes an aviation photographer with no training and a deeply optimistic zoom setting. The official Seafair Weekend Festival viewing area is at Genesee Park, where ticketed guests can watch the air show, hydroplanes and festival programming from the center of the action. It is the best choice for anyone who wants the full Seafair experience, complete with food, crowds and grandstand energy. Buy tickets in advance, plan around traffic and consider transit or shuttle options. For free public viewing, the strongest options remain along Lake Washington. Seward Park offers

big-water views, walking paths and one of the most classic Seattle settings for the show. It can get busy, so arrive early and treat the day like a park outing, not a quick stop. Madrona Park is another practical choice, with
shoreline views, restrooms and room for families to spend a full afternoon outside before the jets arrive. Farther north, Madison Park Beach offers an open lake view, a neighborhood gathering spot and

f you are using a nicer camera, do the boring checks first. Charge the battery, clear space on the memory card and, yes, remove the lens cap. Nothing humbles a DSLR owner faster than a once-in-asummer flyover and a very expensive photo of darkness. Use burst mode. Jets move faster than your thumb. Hold the shutter down and sort through the best frames later. Start wider than you think. It is easier to crop a good wide shot than to find a jet that already left your zoomed-in frame. Track before you shoot. Follow the plane for a second before pressing the shutter. Your camera will have a better chance of keeping focus. Watch the smoke trails. The white trails help show movement and make the photo feel less like a blue sky with a tiny aircraft somewhere in it. Include Seattle. A shot with the lake, skyline, trees, Space Needle, dock or people looking up will feel more local than a close-up of a jet that could have been taken anywhere. Mix it up. You got a cool picture of the Blue Angels flying in front of Mount Rainier? Try shooting with different perspectives and backgroundsyou might find the picture you like the most is the one you didn’t plan. Protect your ears, then your shot. The best photo is not worth startling a child, stressing a dog or stepping backward into someone’s picnic.

Savvy Senior:

Robotic Pets Can Provide Comfort to Elderly Seniors
setups, which could put the festival’s license at risk.
“Magnolia Summerfest has thousands of visitors during the day in a small area that’s crowded with all sorts of activities,” organizers wrote in their notice. “It is all about creating a safe environment for everyone.” The no-dogs policy is also about safety and comfort. Organizers said the energy of a crowded festival can be overwhelming for both people and animals, and that dogs have occasionally become overstimulated and reacted by biting. The goal, they said, is to keep visitors and pets safe, comfortable and happy throughout the event. For families, the practical message is simple: bring sunscreen, water, chairs, picnic blankets and patience, but leave the dog and the pop-up tent at home. The Magnolia Seafair Parade remains one of the weekend’s major draws. The parade is a beloved neighborhood tradition and typically brings community groups, performers, local

By Jim Miller Dear Savvy Senior, My mother, who has dementia, recently moved into an assisted living facility that doesn’t allow pets. I’m thinking about getting her a robotic pet to cheer her up. Are they worth it, and if so, which one do you recommend? —Inquiring Daughter Dear Inquiring, It’s completely natural to want to bring a little furry joy into your mom’s life. Moving into a new home without her pets can be tough, and sometimes even a small companion can make a big difference. Robotic pets – lifelike, interactive companions – can brighten the days of seniors with dementia in ways you might not expect. They’re more than just cute gadgets; they offer comfort, companionship, and a sense of purpose, along with plenty of smiles and fun. Before you pick one, here’s what you should know. WHY PETS MATTER Pets aren’t just cute – they’re family. They bring happiness, companionship, and even a gentle sense of routine. Studies have shown that pets can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, encourage light activity, and improve overall well-being. They can also provide a sense of connection, which can be especially grounding for seniors living with cognitive changes. Unfortunately, many seniors, like your mom, have to give up pets when they move into care facilities or can no longer care for them on their own. That’s where robotic pets can step in. Many studies have shown that robotic companion animals can improve quality of life by offering comfort, interaction, and a sense of companionship. Still, it’s important to remember that not all seniors connect with robotic pets. Some may ignore them completely, while others enjoy holding them or respond positively to a lifelike companion that reacts and even “talks back.” BEST OPTIONS If you’re looking for a high-tech option, Jennie, a new Labrador puppy from Tombot (tombot.com), is the most impressive option available. Soft, cuddly, and very lifelike, she reacts to touch and voice, moves naturally, and
even barks on command. A smartphone app lets you name her, customize her behavior, and track interactions. She runs on a rechargeable battery and is expected to cost around $1,500, with financing available. Jennie is currently on back order, with new units expected this summer or fall, so interested buyers may need to join a waitlist. If that’s more than you want to spend, Joy for All Companion Pets (joyforall.com) are a wonderful alternative. These cats and dogs
Robotic pets aren’t a replacement for real animals, but they can bring companionship, comfort, and joy cost $160 or $180 and respond to touch with purring or barking. They can move their heads, lift their paws, and open and close their eyes. With soft, brushable fur and a gentle “heartbeat,” they feel surprisingly real. They also give seniors a comforting routine, like stroking or “feeding” their pet, which can be both calming and engaging. For seniors who use a walker, the Walker Squawker bird ($65), also available from Joy for All, attaches to the device and chirps when the walker stops moving. It responds to touch and sound, offering a playful companion and gentle encouragement to stay active. Small touches like this can make a big difference in lifting spirits and keeping seniors engaged. Robotic pets aren’t a replacement for real animals, but they can bring companionship, comfort, and joy to seniors who can no longer have a furry friend. They are especially wellsuited for seniors with dementia, providing interaction, routine, and a sense of connection. Whether you choose a sophisticated option like Jennie or a more affordable Joy for All pet, these interactive companions can turn moments of loneliness into smiles, connection, and a little extra joy every day.

For people who want the planes as part of the cityscape rather than directly over the lake, Seattle’s westside viewpoints offer a different kind of experience. Kerry Park is the obvious skyline pick, though it will attract tourists, tripods and anyone trying to capture the most Seattle photo possible. Mayor Wilson called the shooting an “unbelievable tragedy” during Monday’s briefing. “My heart right now is with the victims and their families and with everyone in our community who is reeling from what happened here,” Wilson said. “We have far too much gun violence in this city and in this country.” In an earlier statement, Wilson recognized police, firefighters, medical personnel, Seattle Center and festival employees, and bystanders who helped people reach safety or provided aid. “We know that many people who were not physically injured will carry what they experienced today for a long time,” Wilson said. “That includes witnesses, workers, first responders, and everyone waiting to learn whether someone they love is safe.” The Seattle Center Armory remained closed Monday but was expected to

organizations, floats and spectators into the heart of Magnolia. Magnolia Summerfest has been part of the community for decades and has been a Seafair community event since 1985. Organizers say a portion of net proceeds supports neighborhood schools and nonprofits, giving the weekend a local fundraising role in addition to its festival atmosphere. As with any large neighborhood event, visitors should plan ahead. Parking around the village and playfield will be tight, especially around parade time and evening programming. Families should expect crowds, arrive early for favorite events and be prepared to walk. The new rules may require some regular attendees to adjust their usual setup, but organizers say the goal is to preserve the shared, open feel of the festival so everyone has room to enjoy the weekend. In other words: bring the kids, meet the neighbors, watch the parade, find some shade and enjoy one of Magnolia’s biggest summer traditions. Just do not bring the tent city.

Longtime Subscriber Finds Internet Fame
B
allard’s most elusive resident has inspired millions of admirers, public art, charitable giving and several questions about his involvement in neighborhood history For years, Jimothy lived as many longtime Ballard residents do: quietly, independently and deeply suspicious of anyone attempting to photograph him. Then came the internet. A video captured near the Ballard Goodwill in July transformed the unusually shaped raccoon from neighborhood regular into international celebrity. Within days, Jimothy had accumulated millions of views, inspired murals, merchandise, poetry, tattoos and a video game, and received the kind of public attention normally reserved in Seattle for professional athletes, celebrity chefs and proposals to remove parking. Those who knew him before fame describe Jimothy as private but approachable, provided one is standing at least 50 feet away and has recently taken out the compost. “He has always kept to himself,” said one neighbor who asked not to be identified because Jimothy knows where the garbage cans are kept. “You’d see him around. He’d nod. We’d nod. That was enough.” Jimothy’s representatives declined Queen Anne & Magnolia News’ request for an interview. In a brief statement issued from beneath a cedar deck, they said he remains focused on family, community and several promising bags behind a nearby restaurant. They also confirmed that Jimothy is a longtime subscriber, although circulation staff could not explain why his account lists “third hollow tree on the left” as both a billing and mailing address. An overnight success, years in the making Jimothy attracted attention because of his
compact body, long legs and distinctive gait. Wildlife experts believe he may have a congenital spinal condition, although he has not been examined and appears to have adapted well to life in the city. The internet responded with immediate affection. Ballard residents, however, have begun to suspect Jimothy’s public debut was less an arrival than a revelation. Reports of sightings stretch back years, raising questions about whether the famous raccoon may have played a quiet role in several chapters of neighborhood history.
Jimothy has denied serving as the original model for the Fremont Troll. Sources familiar with the sculpture claim early plans depicted the bridge-dwelling creature with a striped tail and a garbage can clutched beneath one paw. The concept was reportedly abandoned when the artists decided a Volkswagen would provide greater visual impact and significantly fewer fruit flies. Jimothy’s representatives called the allegations “chronologically impossible, coincidental and frankly offensive.” They also rejected requests for DNA testing to determine whether an older member of the Jimothy family may have posed for the sculpture.
The Fremont Troll declined to comment. A spokesperson said he had been advised to stonewall. Jimothy’s possible influence on local landmarks may not be confined to the past. His representatives said he has no involvement in rumors that local liveaboard boaters are preparing a Jimothy-inspired costume for Shilly, the sea monster guarding the Shilshole Bay Marina breakwater. Unconfirmed plans reportedly call for a giant, round black-andwhite papier-mâché mask and a fluffy striped tail, followed by a ceremony formally declaring Shilly a “sea raccoon.” “Jimothy has neither licensed his likeness nor approved any aquatic spin-offs,” his representatives said. Representatives for Shilly did not respond to questions, although several large containers of paste were reportedly delivered to the marina Thursday. Welcomed into Seattle folklore Jimothy’s standing among local legends became official when Seattle muralist Ryan Henry Ward, known as “Henry,” painted his portrait. Ward’s whimsical creatures appear on buildings, fences and garage doors across the region. He is especially known for painting Sasquatches, making his portrait of Jimothy a significant moment in the documentation of elusive Northwest wildlife. Sources close to Sasquatch say the veteran cryptid welcomes Jimothy to the fraternity but is privately irritated that the raccoon achieved international fame, photographic confirmation and a City Council proclamation in approximately one week. Ward auctioned the 24-by-24-inch painting for $6,543.21 and donated the entire amount to the Ballard Food Bank, an organization that had helped him through difficult
times. Amazon matched the contribution, and other companies joined the effort. Jimothy has not taken personal credit for the donations. Friends say he remains uncomfortable discussing money unless it is found loose beneath a vending machine. A possible political future? Jimothy’s sudden fame has prompted speculation about a run for public office. His spokesperson dismissed the rumors, despite several lawn signs reading “JIMOTHY FOR KING COUNTY PROSECUTING ATTORNEY” appearing around Ballard. An unofficial campaign website describes Jimothy as a law-and-order candidate with firsthand knowledge of property crime, trespassing and repeat offenders. Its platform includes leniency for first-time birdfeeder offenses and decriminalizing entry into any garbage can that “was basically left open.” The website identifies no sponsor and lists only “third hollow tree on the left” as its address, apparently violating Washington’s political advertising laws. Asked whether voters might hesitate to elect a masked bandit as the county’s top prosecutor, Jimothy’s spokesperson called the description “an outdated stereotype.” He denied authorizing the website or the signs but added that several signs remain available for anyone with an unfenced yard. Whatever his political ambitions, Jimothy appears content for now to remain in Ballard, close to the yards and neighbors who knew him before the fame. Residents who encounter him are reminded to admire him from a distance, avoid feeding or approaching him and respect his wild nature. Circulation staff confirmed that his subscription remains paid through May.
Ani DiFranco Brings Bold New Sound to Woodland Park Zoo “I defy being defined,” sings Ani DiFranco on her latest album, “I’m not black or white or gray / I’m not he or she or they / I’m not gay or bi or straight / I’m just me, and maybe that’s just another thing to say.”

nd that’s just the tip of the iceberg for a Grammywinning artist who’s been in and out of the public spotlight since she began performing as a solo artist 20-plus albums ago. During that time, the Buffalo, New York native has been described in the press and elsewhere as a protest singer, folk revivalist, feminist icon, riot grrrl pioneer, spoken-word artist, DIY label owner, and more. And now, as DiFranco crosses the country on her current tour, she can add Broadway actor, children’s book author, and full-on bandleader to the list. In these shows, she’ll be playing fan favorites alongside songs from her latest album, “Unprecedented Sh¡t,” which boast a distinctly different sound than the more strippeddown approach she’s taken on past albums. “I’m notorious for producing my own records, and most of them are recorded live in the studio,” said DiFranco, who has also produced albums for a number of artists on her Righteous Babe record label. “I had a co-producer maybe once along the way, but I just wanted to change it up and bring in more of a 21st century sensibility.” To that end, DiFranco handed the production reins over to BJ
Burton, a producer, engineer and mixer with a diverse clientele that includes Bon Iver, James Blake, Low, Lizzo and Charli XCX. “BJ brought a whole new sonic element to this record, and that’s what I wanted,” said DiFranco, who now lives in New Orleans. “There’s a whole new world of technology and possibility when it comes to making records, and I wanted to work with somebody who lived in that world and understood it.” The production on the album’s title track is a prime example, one that initially took time to get used to. “It’s always shocking when someone takes something you made and then changes it,” said DiFranco, who recorded the song at home alone with vocals, guitar and “little whistles and things.” “Then I sent it to BJ and he filtered and contorted it, as he does. He

cranked it up, shoved it through a bunch of gear and, you know, there it was.” With its unlikely mix of acoustic folk and borderline industrial elements, “Unprecedented Sh*t” has since been hailed by critics as one of the artist’s best and most eclectic since 2003’s “Evolved.” Production notwithstanding, “Unprecedented Sh*t” remains true to DiFranco’s artistic and political roots as both a musician and lyricist. “I think we should have a new bible that just says: mother earth,” she sings on the new album, “and I think men should stand down when women give birth.” DiFranco speaks reverently about artists like Woody Guthrie, Odetta, and the many others who’ve followed in their wake. “I’ve always called myself a folk singer proudly,” said DiFranco, who recorded two albums with
the legendary Utah Phillips. “I would so much rather be hanging out with the old lefties – you know, the radical anarchists, the Wobblies and socialists and rabble rousers – than in so many other places I’ve found myself in life and in music. I think it’s cool how the template that Woody and so many others helped establish continues to spread the stories that are not told in the official history books, the ones that you’re not necessarily taught at school.” DiFranco made her own contribution to childhood education in 2024 with “Show Up and Vote,” a picture book aimed toward future voters between the ages of three and six. “Yeah, it’s playing the long game, for sure,” DiFranco said. “One of my reasons for writing it was to give parents an occasion to talk to their kids about voting and its role
in being a citizen and being part of society. That’s always been one of the main issues burning in me, to try to inspire and encourage people to participate and vote.” In other extracurricular activities, DiFranco spent six months in New York in 2024 playing the role of Persephone in Anais Mitchell’s Broadway musical “Hadestown.” Her connection to the play goes back more than a decade. “Anais gave me a cassette tape of a live recording of the proto ‘Hadestown’ show being performed in Vermont by herself and a group of her compadres up there,” DiFranco said of the show’s origins. “Ashe said, here’s this concept album that I want to make, can you help me produce it? So I was sort of there at Hadestown’s conception. And God bless her. I couldn’t believe how long she stuck with that project and how much she put into it.”
DiFranco is proud of her label and its mission. While other artists on Righteous Babe may not reach her level of success, DiFranco is proud of her label and its mission. “We want to help our young artists have sustainable careers in music, to quit the day job and dedicate themselves to art,” DiFranco said. “We’re certainly not the starmaking machinery here. But I think there are plenty of examples in the folk-roots underground where you don’t have to make a killing, but you could make a living.”
