ormerly known as Summer of Safety, Seattle Parks and Recreation’s free drop-in program offers structured activities, caring mentors, and welcoming spaces for youth throughout the summer. Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) is launching Summer Teen XP (Experience) – Belong, Become, Thrive, formerly known as Summer of Safety, a free summer drop-in program offering structured activities, caring mentors, and welcoming spaces for youth throughout the summer. Operating at 16 community center and park locations across Seattle, Summer Teen XP provides young people with opportunities to stay active, build friendships, explore new interests, and connect with trusted adults in a safe and supportive environment. Designed for youth ages 9–18 (ages vary by location), Summer Teen XP features a variety of engaging activities, including field trips, sports and

WHAT THE ALTERNATIVE DOES
Councilmember Kettle’s alternative limits the proposed sales tax increase to just 0.2% — which is 0.1% less than the mayor’s version. The alternative reserves 0.1% sales tax to be used for any emergent transportation investment that can be approved by the City Council. Examples of potential use range from adding hours if demand for transit service rebounds significantly, or for major infrastructure maintenance, if needed. The amendment also reduces duplicate funding for capital spending, as voters approved the $1.55 billion Transportation Levy in 2024 which sets aside over $151 million for transit corridor spending. It additionally maintains the Transit Accessibility Program, giving out 22,000 free ORCA passes, to further reduce the regressive impact of the sales tax.
athletics, arts and crafts, leadership development, games, special events, and outdoor recreation. Many sites also provide a free lunch through the City’s Summer Food Service Program. Programs operate rain or shine, and no registration is required for daily participation. Youth are welcome to drop in at any time during regular program hours, though some field trips may require advance registration. “Every young person deserves a safe place to spend their summer, build friendships, and have fun,” said Michele Finnegan, Seattle Parks and Recreation Interim Superintendent. “Summer Teen XP provides opportunities for youth across Seattle to stay active, explore new interests, and build meaningful connections with trusted adults and their peers in welcoming community spaces.” Families are encouraged to contact their local community center for site-specific schedules, activities, and information about available programs.
The Girl with the Cardboard Cello Helps Launch New Symphony for Women Staff Report
W
hen Erika Fiebig first played a cardboard cello at the Queen Anne Community Center as a child, she could not have known it would be the beginning of a lifelong musical journey. This summer, that journey reaches a new milestone as the Queen Anne musician helps launch Unbound Symphony, a newly founded professional women’s orchestra making its public debut on July 10. The inaugural concert, part of Unbound Symphony’s Women’s Orchestra Festival, will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Highline Performing Arts Center in Burien. Nearly 60
professional musicians will perform in what organizers hope will become a lasting addition to the region’s arts landscape. For Fiebig, the performance is both a professional achievement and a homecoming of sorts. She grew up near 6th Avenue West and Howe Street, the daughter of two Seattle Public Schools teachers. Her musical education began close to home, with those first lessons at the Queen Anne Community Center. She later attended McClure Middle School, participated in Seattle Public Schools’ racial integration program, and performed with Seattle Youth Symphony before continuing her studies at Oberlin College.
While many musicians leave their hometowns to build careers elsewhere, Fiebig stayed rooted in Seattle. Today she serves as principal cellist of the Lake Washington Symphony Orchestra, performs regularly with the Federal Way Symphony and local theater productions, and was recently named co-principal cello of Cascade Symphony Orchestra. Despite a successful performing career, the opportunity to help build a new orchestra from the ground up felt especially meaningful.

ouncilmember Bob Kettle (District 7) announced that he’s introducing an affordable alternative to the Seattle Transit Measure renewal, CB 121226, proposed by the mayor and currently being considered by the City Council. The mayor’s proposal would increase the sales tax by 0.15% to 0.3%, while Councilmember Kettle’s amendment would increase the sales tax by a more affordable 0.05% “A healthy transit and transportation system is absolutely essential for Seattle. As both a strong supporter and believer in public transit, I know how vital these connections are to our daily lives,” said Councilmember Kettle. “However, we must spend our public dollars strategically, rather than raising the sales tax simply because we can. Every day, I hear from neighbors about how living in Seattle is becoming less and less affordable. My alternative offers a pragmatic increase in transit funding for bus service and ORCA cards while preserving the flexibility we need for emerging transit-related investments.” Mayor Wilson’s current version of the transit measure was released on June 3 and doubles the City’s sales tax that supports transit from 0.15% to 0.3%. It’s expected to raise an average of $138 million annually over 10 years, while also assuming major increases in transit ridership. As of 2024, post-pandemic bus ridership has recovered to only 70 percent of 2019 numbers. Fifty percent of today’s riders are commuters, compared 60 percent in 2019. The amendment acknowledges the 100,000-transit service hour increase anticipated to be made by King County Metro in 2028, which will help to support Seattle’s service. “As we head into the final stages of this process, I urge community members with affordability concerns to stay at the table and engaged. We want to hear from you,” added Councilmember Kettle.

Savvy Senior:
CELLO, FROM 1
How to Make Sure Your End-of-Life Wishes Are Followed
By Jim Miller Dear Savvy Senior, I had a living will/advance directive prepared about 10 years ago documenting my end-of-life medical wishes, but I’ve read that these documents are often ignored. What can you tell me about this? —Troubled Tina Cellist Erika Fiebig plays at an outdoor concert.
“Unbound Symphony responds to a longstanding need for spaces where women’s artistic voices can flourish freely,” Fiebig said. “This festival celebrates not only exceptional music, but the creative community behind it.” The orchestra was founded by Bhavani Kotha, who envisioned an organization that would create professional opportunities for women musicians while highlighting works by women composers. Since its public launch on International Women’s Day earlier this year, the organization has attracted nearly 60 professional musicians and raised more than $60,000 in community support. “Together with a team of musicians and community leaders, we embarked on a journey of creating a new symphony orchestra,” Kotha said. “Seeing such a positive response from musicians like Erika Fiebig is inspiring.” The July 10 concert will feature music by several acclaimed women composers, including Jessie Montgomery’s Starburst, Gabriela Ortiz’s Kauyumari, selections from Margaret Bonds’s Montgomery Variations, and Dr. Sarah Bassingthwaighte’s Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra featuring soloist Rebecca Lawrence. The program will also include the world premiere of Spider Boots, a new collaborative
work by Bassingthwaighte and Tessa Brinckman. Beyond the concert stage, Unbound Symphony has developed partnerships with organizations including Rising Waters Collective, Seattle Dance & Performing Arts Medicine (SeaPAM), and the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center, reflecting its commitment to artist well-being and equitable professional culture within the arts. For Fiebig, however, the concert remains deeply personal. It represents the culmination of decades spent studying, performing, and contributing to Seattle’s musical community. “The momentum we’ve experienced—from the caliber of musicians to the support we’ve received from the community—has surpassed all expectations,” she said. As she prepares to lead the cello section at the orchestra’s inaugural performance, Fiebig hopes her Queen Anne neighbors will join her in celebrating a new chapter for women in classical music. Unbound Symphony’s inaugural performance takes place Friday, July 10, at 7:30 p.m. at the Highline Performing Arts Center in Burien. Tickets and more information are available at UnboundSymphony. org. Admission is free for children ages 12 and under.

Dear Tina, es, unfortunately, that can happen. Living wills aren’t always followed in practice, most often because the document isn’t available when it’s needed or never reaches the right people in time. They can also fall short because they aren’t medical orders, and the language may be too vague to guide doctors in an emergency. That doesn’t mean your wishes won’t be honored, but it does mean a little extra planning can help prevent confusion later. Here’s how to make sure your wishes are followed. ADVANCE DIRECTIVE + POLST
About 40 percent of older Americans have an advance directive. This typically includes a living will that spells out the care you want if you become incapacitated, and a health care power of attorney (or proxy) who is authorized to make decisions on your behalf. To strengthen those instructions, talk with your doctor about completing a POLST (Physician Orders for LifeSustaining Treatment) – sometimes called MOLST or POST depending on your state. Unlike a living will, this is a doctor-signed medical order that must be followed by EMTs and hospital staff. It translates your wishes into clear instructions for treatments such as CPR, breathing machines, and feeding tubes.
These interventions can save lives but may also cause harm if you are very ill or frail. Discussing them ahead of time helps you weigh the trade-offs and makes it easier for your family to understand your choices, easing stress if decisions must be made quickly. Even if you already have an advance directive, adding a POLST can make your wishes clearer. Without one, first responders are generally required to attempt resuscitation and transport you to a hospital, where doctors may pursue aggressive treatment if your living will isn’t available or specific enough. Once your POLST is completed, make sure it is easy to find. Keep a copy on the refrigerator, carry one in your wallet, and save a photo on your phone. Share copies with your health care proxy, family members, and physicians so everyone is aligned. It’s also wise to ask your providers to add the form to your electronic health record, since medical information isn’t always shared between hospitals
and care facilities. These steps can make a real difference in helping ensure your wishes are followed. If discussing these issues with family feels difficult, websites like The Conversation Project (theconversationproject.org) and Prepare for Your Care (prepareforyourcare.org) offer helpful guidance. One final note: if you’re planning surgery, you may want to temporarily suspend your POLST in case your heart stops briefly during the procedure. And if you haven’t yet created an advance directive, you can do so for free at caringinfo. org or mydirectives.com, or for a small fee – $5 to $7.50 – at fivewishes.org. Taking these steps now can help ensure your wishes are followed and ease the burden on your loved ones later. Send your questions or comments to questions@savvysenior.org, or to Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070.

Stress Well, Age Well By Nancy Weinbeck
A
ging is a verb. It’s something we do. At life plan communities like Bayview, we do it together. We also “do” liminality together, because I believe that aging is a liminal state, a state of in between, the threshold between where we were and we’re we’ll be. Liminality brings great freedom and opportunity, but it can also be unsettling and frankly a little scary. We are comfortable with known guardrails and limits. Remove all that and we can feel unmoored. Being in community can anchor us in the midst of stress. Stress can be negative (distress) or positive (eustress). As we age, we certainly experience periods of distress. But we also experience times of eustress, such as learning a new skill, adapting to a new environment, volunteering or mentoring. Tapping into our cognitive and emotional muscle promotes their growth. Physical exercise is also a form of eustress – working our physical muscles promotes their growth as well. In other words, aging creates opportunities for eustress, which allows us to grow new habits of thought and behaviors that serve us well as

W we evolve into our older selves. And it certainly delights me to share those opportunities abound at life plan communities like Bayview. The liminal space of aging can be stressful. But how we process that stress can make a difference in how well we age. Liminality is the threshold, one that contains eustress and distress. Will we leverage eustress to fuel us, or dwell in the negativity of distress to diminish us? Aging is not a choice but how we contextualize and process its stressors is a choice. I choose to fiercely inhabit the threshold and grow. I hope you join me.
e’re working on making parking and loading easier in Upper Queen Anne as part of our Community Access and Parking Program. Your input is greatly appreciated. We will use what we hear from the community, along with parking data, to develop possible recommendations. Potential changes could include: • New time limits or paid parking to make sure customers can reliably find a parking spot • Accessible parking spaces for people with disabilities • Load zones for goods deliveries, food delivery services, and rideshare pick-up and drop-off • Intersection daylighting to improve visibility at crosswalks Many businesses depend on reliable curbspace access for deliveries and customers. That’s why we regularly collect data and community feedback in business districts with high demand.
Move in and the kids will be jealous. Really. It is that nice.
Our goal is to make it easier to find parking by encouraging parking turnover. This helps more people access shops, restaurants, and services. We also want to address loading needs for businesses’ deliveries and quick stops. We recently completed parking studies and intercept surveys in Upper Queen Anne, which has changed a lot since we last studied it. WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY ACCESS & PARKING PROGRAM? The Community Access & Parking Program helps improve access to Seattle’s business districts by managing parking, loading, and other curbspace uses. We regularly collect data and community feedback in business districts with high demand. Based on data and feedback, we manage parking using a mix of tools like time limits, paid parking, and load zones. • Time- limited parking and paid parking help ensure spaces are not used all day
by the same person so more people can find parking when they need it. • Load zones give delivery drivers a place to load and unload. Without load zones, delivery drivers may double park or block travel lanes, bike lanes, or sidewalks. Load zones help businesses get needed deliveries and help keep streets safer. • Intersection daylighting, prevents cars from parking too close to intersections and makes it easier for everyone to see each other. To learn more, visit the Community Access and Parking Program website. Upper Queen Anne Queen Anne Ave N in Upper Queen Anne is a district with many businesses, visitors, employees, and residents. SDOT last conducted a full review of parking in Upper Queen Anne in 2008 – almost two decades ago. Since then, recent parking studies have shown growing and consistently high parking demand. When we spoke to people in the neighborhood, we heard that a majority of people arrived to the area by walking, biking, or taking transit. Please take our survey by July 27.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Throughout summer, we’ll continue collecting community feedback. Later this fall, we’ll share what we heard and present potential changes for additional input.
