Mayor Wilson Announces Rental Assistance Funding to Help 1,000 Households Stay Housed Each Year Seattle Human Services
T
he City of Seattle is taking another step to help residents stay housed before they fall into homelessness. As part of Mayor Katie Wilson’s affordability agenda, the Seattle Human Services Department announced a new Request for Proposals for homelessness prevention services. The funding opportunity will provide approximately $8 million in 2027 to support rental assistance, eviction prevention, legal services, case management, and a new centralized application process designed to make it easier for residents to ask for and be connected to help. The investment is expected to support approximately 1,000 households each year.
WHY THIS INVESTMENT MATTERS
PROVIDE HELP BEFORE A CRISIS BECOMES HOMELESSNESS
For many households, one unexpected emergency - a medical bill, job loss, reduced work hours, or rent increase - can put housing at risk. Across Washington state, 9 in 10 evictions result from nonpayment of rent. At the same time, homelessness continues to rise, with the most recent Point-in-Time Count showing a 26 percent increase in homelessness in King County from 2022 to 2024.
Rental assistance is one of the most effective tools available to prevent homelessness. Rental assistance is one of the most effective tools available to prevent homelessness. When households receive help before they lose housing, they are more likely to remain stable and less likely to need more intensive crisis services later. “Rental assistance is vital for residents across our city to help people with stable housing,” said Tanya Kim, Director of the Seattle Human Services Department. “These resources from Seattle’s Human Services Department are a lifeline for families and individuals. Through partnerships with community-based pathways, information on how to access support will reach more people and help families to thrive.”

lue Highway Games was honored by the Queen Anne Historical Society with the Beloved Queen Anne Business Award during a recent community event recognizing preservation, restoration, advocacy and neighborhood stewardship. Owners Kyndra and Jacqueline Williams accepted the award in person and shared reflections on Blue Highway’s history, its role in the community and the legacy the business continues to carry forward on Queen Anne. The longtime neighborhood game store has become a gathering place for families, friends, hobbyists and tabletop game fans. The shop offers board games, card games,
Blue Highway Games will mark its 19th anniversary in July puzzles, party games and gifts, with staff who can help customers find the right game for a family night, birthday, date night, holiday gift or regular game group. In a message after the event, the owners thanked the community for its continued support and congratulated other award recipients for their work protecting and celebrating Queen Anne’s landmarks and neighborhood history. “Once again we are reminded of the power of community and are feeling incredibly grateful to you all,” Kyndra and Jacqueline Williams wrote. Blue Highway Games will mark its 19th anniversary in July, giving neighbors another reason to stop in, browse the shelves and support a business that has helped make Queen Anne feel connected for nearly two decades.

Housing instability and eviction continue to affect many renters across Seattle and King County. King County experienced 8,732 evictions in 2025, a 12 percent increase from 2024 and a record high. At the same time, 46 percent of King County renters are rent burdened, meaning they pay 30 percent or more of their income toward rent. The burden is not shared equally. Rent burden is especially high among people with low incomes, people with disabilities, people with limited English proficiency, older adults, and communities of color. These disparities reflect broader patterns of economic inequality and housing instability that can make it harder for residents to stay housed when they face a financial emergency.

Discovery Park Adds Summer Shuttle and Information Booth Staff Report
D
iscovery Park visitors will have more help navigating the park this summer, as Seattle Parks and Recreation brings back the free Summer Beach Shuttle and adds a temporary information booth while the Visitor Center remains closed. The update follows a spring and early summer in which volunteers helped fill a visible gap in visitor services at Seattle’s largest park. With the Visitor Center closed, local volunteers, including Magnolia teen Jack Cheever, Friends of Discovery Park members and students from area high schools, stepped in on weekends to answer questions, offer directions and help visitors find trails, restrooms and beach access. Their work helped cover a period when Discovery Park was still welcoming heavy seasonal use, but lacked its usual public-facing welcome point. The volunteer table became an informal front desk for visitors trying to find the Loop Trail, South Beach Trail, West Point Lighthouse and other park destinations.
Seattle Parks has now announced that a temporary information booth will be available on-site Thursdays through Sundays now through Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., depending on staff availability. The booth is expected to be open July 4. The Discovery Park Summer Beach Shuttle will also return for the 2026 season. The free shuttle will operate Saturdays starting immediatly through Sept. 5, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The shuttle loops between the East, North and South Beach parking lots, arriving at each stop about every 30 minutes. The final departure from the beach is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. People, service animals and strollers are allowed on the shuttle. Pets, coolers, surfboards, paddleboards and other large items are not allowed. The service makes beach access easier during the park’s busiest months, especially for visitors who may have difficulty walking the steep route between the upper parking areas and the shoreline. It also helps limit traffic pressure near the beach. The shuttle is supported by donations through the
Associated Recreation Council’s Discovery Park Beach Shuttle fund. Discovery Park remains open, including its trails, viewpoints, beach areas and parking lots. Visitors planning a summer trip should check shuttle times, pack light enough to ride and allow extra time for parking and transportation within the park.
For the volunteers who kept showing up while official visitor services were unavailable, the temporary booth is a welcome step. Their work helped make sure visitors were not left entirely on their own, and their effort showed how much the park depends on the people who care for it. It also gives that work a visible home.

SEAFAIR PIRATE LANDING
This RFP builds on Seattle’s existing homelessness prevention system by focusing on three strategies: • Helping households at immediate risk of homelessness Approximately $6.5 million will support rental assistance and case management for households at immediate risk of losing their housing. This funding is intended to help stabilize residents before they enter the eviction process or become homeless. • Helping households already facing eviction Approximately $627,000 will support legal services and rental assistance for households already involved in the eviction process. This strategy focuses on helping residents resolve urgent housing crises and remain in their homes whenever possible. • Creating a centralized front door for rental assistance Approximately $900,000 will support one agency to manage

Savvy Senior: Should You Get a Heart Calcium Scan?
June 27, Alki Beach Park The Seafair Pirates will storm Alki Beach on June 27 for the annual Pirates Landing. The long-running Seattle tradition brings the pirates ashore to steal the key to the city, entertain families and launch another summer of Seafair fun. The landing is expected around 1:30 p.m., with festivities before the pirates arrive. This is a good family pick, especially for kids who like costumes, noise and a little theatrical mischief by the water.

client applications, coordinate with providers, and help connect residents to the right support. This agency will help operate a more coordinated homelessness prevention system and support consistent service delivery across providers.
A SIMPLER PATH TO HELP
A key part of this investment is a new online rental assistance application expected to launch in 2027. The application will be hosted on a City of Seattle website and is intended to replace the current process, where households often have to contact multiple providers that each have their own screening and intake requirements. The selected Centralized Front Door agency will help manage this new process, coordinate across awarded providers, and connect residents with immediate and appropriate support. The goal is to make rental assistance easier to access, reduce confusion for residents, and strengthen outcomes for households at risk of homelessness.
By Jim Miller Dear Savvy Senior, I just turned 58 and heart disease runs in my family. My cholesterol has been creeping up, and I’ve been hearing about a scan that can show your actual heart risk. Is that something I should look into? —Heart Worried
Y
Dear Worried, ou’re smart to be thinking about this now. For years, cholesterol numbers have been the main way to estimate heart disease risk. But there’s another tool gaining attention that can offer a more direct look: a coronary artery calcium scan, or CAC scan. This quick, noninvasive test looks for actual plaque buildup in your heart’s arteries, not just the risk of developing it. Here’s why that matters. High cholesterol suggests you might develop heart disease someday. But calcium in your arteries means some disease is already present. The higher your calcium score, the greater your risk of a future heart attack or stroke. That makes this test especially useful for people like you with a family history and borderline numbers. HOW IT WORKS
A CAC scan is a specialized CT scan that takes about 10 minutes and doesn’t require needles or dyes. You simply lie on a table while the scanner takes images of your heart. It uses a small amount of radiation, similar to a mammogram. The result is a calcium score that reflects how much plaque is in your arteries: • A score of zero means no detectable plaque. • A score from 1 to 100 indicates mild plaque. • A score from 100 to 299 suggests moderate buildup. • A score of 300 or higher points to more serious disease.
This number gives you and your doctor something concrete to work with. Instead of guessing about your risk, you can make more confident decisions about whether to start a statin or focus on lifestyle changes alone. WHO NEEDS IT
Not everyone needs a CAC scan. It’s most helpful for adults over 40 who have some risk factors, like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or a family history of heart disease, but aren’t clearly high or low risk. If your risk level is uncertain or you’re hesitant about taking a statin, the scan can help break the tie. It can also be a strong wake-up call. Many people who see plaque on their scan are more motivated to take medication, improve their diet, lose weight, and stay active. GETTING ONE
CAC scans are widely available at hospitals and imaging centers that offer CT services. You’ll usually need a doctor’s
order, but some centers offer self-pay screenings you can schedule yourself. The scan typically costs about $75 to $200 out of pocket and usually isn’t something you need to repeat very often. Results are often available quickly, sometimes within a day or two. A couple of caveats: A score of zero doesn’t mean you have no risk, and the test isn’t meant for diagnosing symptoms like chest pain. It’s just one piece of the puzzle and should be considered along with your overall health picture. Given your age, family history, and slightly elevated cholesterol, a CAC scan could be a very useful next step. It’s worth having a conversation with your doctor to see if it makes sense for you.

Why For Good On behalf of Seattle Pride
I
t’s time to ‘Rally’ and bring your full self on Sunday, June 28, as the Seattle Pride Parade takes over downtown Seattle. This year’s parade centers the theme “Rally,” celebrating the power of coming together-raising voices, honoring LGBTQIA2S+ history, and affirming the joy, resilience, and purpose of community. With visitors from across the globe arriving to cheer for their teams, all are welcome to join in the day of celebration. Kicking off the day’s festivities at 10 a.m., along 4th Avenue at Westlake Park are opening statements from this year’s grand marshals and the presentation of the Seattle Pride Ackerman Award of Service to Stacy Bass-Walden, co-founder and co-producer of
West Seattle’s Alki Beach Pride. This year’s parade announcers and DJs for all three stages: Westlake Park: Versace Doll, DonnaTella Howe, and Kween Kaysh 4th & Bell: Cookie Couture, Ceasar Hart, and DJ Justice Manslayer 4th & Denny: Goddess Briq House, King Leo Mane, and DJ MIXX America Leading this year’s parade as grand marshals are queer activist and community leader DeAunt’e Damper and the PWHL’s Seattle Torrent. More than a spectacle, the parade is a living expression of Seattle’s queer legacy-a space where generations connect, stories are shared, and community shows up in full force. “Every year, the Seattle Pride Parade reminds us of what is
possible when community comes together,” said Patti Hearn, executive director of Seattle Pride. “This year’s theme, Rally, speaks exactly to the power of showing up for one another, of making space for every voice, and of celebrating the joy and resilience that defines us.” A new addition this year is the opportunity for parade-goers to cast their vote for their favorite marching groups in three categories, including Best Float awarded to the parade group with the most creative, eye-catching float design, Best Performance for the group that brought the most energy to the street through either choreography, live music, or pure showmanship, and Best Rally, which will be awarded to the entry that best embodies the spirit of this year’s theme. The voting link will be live on parade day on SeattlePride.org/events/parade. For those looking for premium views, grandstand seating, which has been expanded this year, is available for advance purchase near the Westlake Park, 4th & Lenora, and 4th & Bell stages while supplies last. Tickets are on sale now at SeattlePride.org. Accessibility is a priority, as there will be ASL interpreters, hydration stations, and accessible portable restrooms along the parade route. Parade-goers can have an elevated experience with the Official Seattle Pride Parade Drag Brunch. The event promises an unforgettable day of food, drinks, drag performances, and up-close views to the Seattle Pride Parade. For those unable to attend in person, the Seattle Pride Parade
