OMG! OK, IT’S Seattle to Activate Stadium District HAPPENING. Cameras During World Cup EVERYBODY STAY CALM. by Hype Coordinator Patrick Michaud

H

ello, Seattle. Hello World! My name is Patrick Michaud and I have the greatest job title in the history of law enforcement: SPD Hype Coordinator. I bestowed this title on myself approximately 15 weeks ago when my supervisor realized that someone needed to manage the intersection of ‘extreme excitement about football’ and ‘public safety communications’. Apparently, I’m that person.

eattle will activate closedcircuit television cameras near the city’s stadiums during the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Mayor Katie Wilson said police, federal law enforcement and security partners identified “general but credible threats” tied to the tournament. The decision, announced June 5, marks a reversal from Wilson’s earlier position

WELCOME TO YOUR OFFICIAL SPD GUIDE TO THE WORLD CUP 2026 IN SEATTLE “Football” vs Football I’m as confused as you are. Let’s break it down. Scoring Football: A team of 11 attempts to move a ball down a 100-yard field to score 6 points. “Football”: A team of 11 attempts to move a ball down a 115-yard-long field to score a single point. Offsides Football: A person crosses an imaginary line before play starts. “Football”: A person crosses an imaginary line while play is underway

that the Stadium District cameras would remain paused unless a credible threat emerged while the city reviewed privacy and data governance policies for its public safety technology program. Seattle will host six World Cup matches beginning June 15 at Seattle Stadium, the temporary FIFA name for Lumen Field. The games are expected to bring large crowds to the Stadium District, Pioneer

Square, SODO, downtown, transit corridors and official fan celebration sites. In her statement, Wilson said she received an updated briefing from the Seattle Police Department and the FBI on the global and local threat environment. “The breadth and depth of intelligence gathering that informed the briefing identified general but credible threats to safety and security during the games,” Wilson said. “While not unexpected given an event of this magnitude, this information has persuaded our law enforcement, emergency management, and FIFA security partners that we should be operating at a heightened risk level.” Wilson said the cameras will be available to help the city quickly establish situational awareness near the stadiums if needed. The mayor also acknowledged concerns about privacy,

civil liberties and public safety technology, saying she shares those values and that the city will continue refining policies and protections for the video data captured by the cameras. The decision follows public pressure from Seattle City Council members, especially District 7 Councilmember Bob Kettle, who had criticized the camera pause as unjustified and urged Wilson to turn the Stadium District cameras on before the World Cup. On June 2, Kettle said he had sent a letter to Wilson arguing that the pause was inconsistent with the city ordinances that authorized and funded the CCTV program. He said the council had written protections into the law related to federal breaches involving immigration enforcement, reproductive health and gender-affirming care.

Pike Place Market Welcomes the World

Catching the ball Football: Encouraged for all players “Football”: Encouraged for one predesignated player per team, signified by a different colored jersey and only if they remain inside of a box that is painted on the ground. Simple, right? Seattle Stadium will host six matches from June 15 through July 6. Getting there is half the battle, and by battle, I mean navigating Seattle traffic, which on a normal Tuesday is already an experience that replicates Dante’s fifth circle (look it up). On match days, it will be so much worse. My strong recommendation is to take the Link Light Rail to Stadium or International District Stations. It’s fast, it’s reliable, and nobody can cut you off in traffic when you’re on a train. Park-and-ride options are available throughout the system. Check soundtransit.org for schedules. If you’re driving, plan to arrive early and use the designated parking. Road closures will be in effect around Seattle Stadium and Pioneer Square on match days starting approximately four hours before kickoff.

FROM SEATTLE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION: MORE WAYS TO GET AROUND

Seattle officials are taking several steps to help visitors move around the city during the World Cup. A temporary pause on many city construction projects will remain in effect through early July to reduce travel disruptions in key areas. Visitors can also take advantage of the free Waterfront Shuttle, which connects Seattle Center, the waterfront, Pioneer Square, Seattle Stadium, the Chinatown-International District, and nearby ferry terminals. For those arriving by bike, new protected bike routes and shareduse paths have recently opened near Seattle Center, expanding connections between

ike Place Market will stay open late June 18 for the Welcoming the World Night Market, a special evening event celebrating Seattle’s role in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The event runs from 5 to 10 p.m. at Pike Place Market, 85 Pike St., and will bring together food, shopping, music, art and community programming across the Market. The night market is designed to welcome soccer fans from around the world while giving locals another reason to explore one of Seattle’s best-known public spaces after regular daytime hours. Visitors can expect more than 60 local craftspeople, 20 food vendors, 13 farmers and two live art demonstrations. Live

music will be provided by Lace Cadence of KEXP, with backyard party games and other activities planned throughout the Market. Businesses across Pike Place Market will also extend their hours for the event, giving visitors more time to shop, dine and explore. The vendor lineup includes a wide mix of handmade goods, from ceramics, jewelry and glasswork to clothing, accessories, printmaking, paintings, toys, collectibles and woodwork. Food options will include Market favorites and local vendors such as Pike Place Chowder, Maiz, Chukar Cherries, Shug’s Ice Cream & Soda Fountain, Pure Food Fish, Saffron Spice and more. Farmers and producers will also be part of the evening, including flower farms, cider makers, herb growers and other regional vendors.

The event is part of Seattle’s broader World Cup celebration, as the city prepares to host six matches at Seattle Stadium between June 15 and July 6. While the games will draw international visitors to the stadium, events like the night market are intended to showcase Seattle’s neighborhoods, food culture, small businesses and public gathering spaces. For visitors, the Welcoming the World Night Market offers a chance to experience Pike Place Market with a festival atmosphere. For residents, it is a reminder that the Market is not only a tourist destination, but also a place to support local farmers, artists, restaurants and independent businesses. The event is free to attend, with food, shopping and other purchases available from individual vendors.

Savvy Senior: How to Use AI Safely and Protect Yourself from Scams

STAY CALM, FROM 1 downtown and the Seattle Center campus. The Chinatown-International District has also received new pedestrian lighting and wayfinding improvements intended to enhance safety and accessibility ahead of the tournament. What Not to Bring Seattle Stadium has a bag policy. Bags must be clear and no larger than 12x6x12 inches, or smaller non-clear clutch bags no larger than 4.5×6.5 inches. Prohibited items include, but are not limited to, weapons of any kind, outside food and beverages, selfie sticks (do people still use these?), drones, and professional camera equipment. Full list at lumenfield.com. The Truth About Alcohol and Driving I’m going to say something here that I want you to really hear, because I mean it with all the hype and all the heart I have. Drunk driving kills people. Real people. Neighbors. Parents. Kids. The same fans you’re cheering next to. Please, please, PLEASE,

CAMERAS, FROM 1 By Jim Miller Dear Savvy Senior, I keep hearing about AI in the news and how it’s being used in scams. I’m not very tech savvy and find it confusing. What should I know to protect myself? —Cautious Senior

Y

Dear Cautious, ou’re not alone. Many older adults are asking the same question. Artificial intelligence, or AI, is becoming part of everyday life, from smartphones and internet searches to banking and customer service. It’s also making scams more convincing and harder to spot, which is why a basic understanding helps. The good news is you don’t need to be a tech expert to use AI safely and with confidence. KNOW THE BASICS

AI is technology that can create and analyze information in ways that seem human. It can write emails, answer questions, recommend products, generate images and even mimic voices. While this can be helpful, it also means things you see or hear online may not always be accurate. If something seems unusual or too good to be true, take a closer look. USE IT WISELY

A good way to get comfortable with AI is to start small. Many smartphones include voice assistants like Siri or Google Assistant that can set reminders, check the weather or answer questions. You can also try tools like ChatGPT or Claude to explain a news story, suggest recipes or help draft a message.

AI can also be useful for everyday tasks like comparing products, planning trips or organizing a to-do list. Think of it as a helpful assistant, not a decision-maker. Keep in mind that AI isn’t perfect. It can give answers that sound confident but may be outdated or incorrect. For important matters like your health, finances or legal issues, always double-check with a trusted source such as your doctor, bank or a government website. WATCH FOR SCAMS

Scammers are using AI to make their schemes more convincing. You may receive an email that appears to be from your bank or Medicare or a phone call that sounds like a family member. Be especially wary of urgent messages that pressure you to act quickly or warn that your account will be closed. PROTECT YOURSELF

The most important habit for avoiding scams is to slow down. If you receive a suspicious call, text or email, stop and assess the message. Don’t click links, download attachments or respond right away. Instead, contact the company or person directly using a phone number or website you trust – not the one provided in the message. Scammers now use AI to mimic voices and write convincing messages. Even if something sounds like it’s from a family member, friend or company, verify it another way before taking action. Never share sensitive information like your Social Security number, bank details or passwords unless you

initiated the contact and trust the source. Banks and government agencies, including Medicare and Social Security, will not ask for this information by phone or email. Urgent requests for payment by gift card, wire transfer or cryptocurrency are also red flags. For added protection, use two-factor authentication, and keep your devices updated. You can even consider call-blocking services from your mobile service provider. If something doesn’t look right, take time to check it or ask a trusted friend or family member before responding. KEEP LEARNING

Technology is always changing, but there are ways to stay informed. Many libraries and senior centers offer free classes on digital skills and online safety. Trusted resources like AARP’s Fraud Watch Network (aarp.org/fraudwatch) and the Federal Trade Commission (consumer.ftc.gov) also provide up-to-date scam alerts and protection tips. In addition, internet and mobile provider Cox Mobile (cox.com/mobilesafety) offers a library of research, tips and online safety tools to keep you informed and secure online. AI may seem complicated at first, but a little awareness goes a long way. By staying cautious and building a few smart habits, you can protect yourself and make this technology work for you. Send your questions or comments to questions@savvysenior.org, or to Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070.

Kettle also warned that leaving the cameras inactive before the World Cup created a public safety risk, saying Seattle was the only one of the 11 U.S. host cities without a fully active CCTV system. After Wilson’s announcement, Kettle commended the decision. Councilmember Rob Saka also urged the mayor to activate the cameras, citing his experience running in the 2013 Boston Marathon, where security footage helped investigators identify bombing suspects after the attack. Saka, whose district includes the Stadium District, said Seattle should use the public safety tools already available during a major international event. Councilmember Maritza Rivera also supported the move, calling it the right decision and pointing to privacy protections included in the legislation authorizing the cameras. The debate reflects a larger tension in Seattle’s World Cup planning. City officials are preparing for one of the largest international events Seattle has ever hosted, while also facing concerns about surveillance, data use and whether temporary security measures could become permanent public safety tools. The Stadium District cameras are part of Seattle’s broader Real Time Crime Center system. The

existing program includes CCTV cameras in areas such as downtown, Aurora Avenue and the ChinatownInternational District. The city previously approved expansion into additional areas, including the Stadium District, the area around Garfield High School and the Capitol Hill nightlife district. In March, Wilson paused the expansion while the city reviewed privacy and data governance questions. At the time, she said installation of the stadium cameras would continue, but they would not be turned on unless a credible threat was identified. Now, Wilson says that threshold has been met. The cameras will add another layer to Seattle’s World Cup security preparations, which already include police staffing, emergency management coordination, transportation planning, federal partners and FIFA security operations. For residents and visitors, the change means the Stadium District will have active camera monitoring during the tournament. For city leaders, the decision is also a test of how Seattle balances public safety with privacy during a global event. Wilson said she has confidence in law enforcement, emergency management and FIFA security partners. “Seattle is ready to welcome the world,” Wilson said.

Mayor Katie B. Wilson Releases Seattle Transit Measure Renewal Office of Mayor Katie Wilson

N

ew proposal will boost transit service with 100,000 more trips a year and double the number of free ORCA passes. Mayor Katie B. Wilson unveiled her latest effort today to increase transit service for Seattleites with a renewal of the Seattle Transit Measure. If approved by the City Council and voters, the measure would fund 280,000 King County Metro bus trips a year and 22,000 free ORCA transit passes for qualified lower-income residents over the next ten years. “The Seattle Transit Measure is one of the reasons why the bus is an irresistibly good way to get around Seattle” said Seattle Mayor Katie B. Wilson. “Transportation is one of the biggest costs for most families, so these investments are essential to make our city more affordable so Seattleites can get to jobs, opportunities, and each other without a car.” “The Seattle Transit Measure bolsters transit service so our buses and streetcars run more frequently throughout the day and night,” said SDOT Acting Director Angela Brady. “People need to get around at all times of the day, and not everyone works a 9 to 5 job. Frequent all-hours transit service is one of the most effective ways we have to make it more affordable

and convenient to live in Seattle without owning a car.” The proposal would renew and expand the Seattle Transit Measure previously approved by 80% of voters in 2020. Seattle uses the majority of sales tax revenue to pay for more transit service, especially at off-peak times. If approved by the Seattle City Council and passed by voters, the proposal will take effect in 2027 and last for 10 years. The Mayor’s proposal calls for a 0.3% sales tax expected to raise an average of $138 million annually over the 10-year measure. This is estimated to cost the median two-person Seattle household about $58 a year. This replaces the current 0.15% sales tax expiring in March 2027 which currently costs the median household $29 annually. Investments in more frequent and reliable transit service: The majority of transit measure funding would pay for extra bus trips. This would increase funding for bus service by about 50% and pay for 280,000 bus trips a year (100,000 more than are funded by the current Seattle Transit Measure). Bus service investments will be focused on the people and neighborhoods which depend on transit most. This includes eastwest transit service, connections to light rail stations, and neighborhoods planned for housing and employment growth.

Behind the Scenes of the Limited-Edition SEA26 ORCA Card

Get to know the artist and the story behind this collectible card, via 4Culture and the ORCA Team By Jeff Switzer King County Metro

T

here’s nothing Seattle-area transit riders love more than a special-edition ORCA card! To celebrate Seattle’s status as a host city in the 2026 World Cup, ORCA produced a limitededition, promotional ORCA card which celebrates the excitement of the sport and the culture of the Pacific Northwest.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

THE SEA26 ORCA CARD

The SEA26 ORCA card, which is now available in limited quantities across Puget Sound, is a pocketsized piece of art. It features a vibrant blue raven, a green whale-tail pattern inspired by the SEA26 brand, and multi-colored soccer balls. These elements are incorporated into Bremner’s formline and create a continuous sense of movement. As Bremner says, “This card is meant to capture the joy and movement of soccer in the Pacific Northwest.” Before she was an artist, Bremner was a soccer player, making this collaboration even more significant. 27,000 of these specialedition ORCA cards were produced ahead of the tournament. These cards will be available to transit riders throughout the games, primarily distributed by agencies during events and at customer service locations. Everett Transit, King County Metro, Kitsap Transit, Sound Transit, ORCA, City of Seattle,

and the World Cup Local Organizing Committee all have these collectible cards, so keep an eye on their pages to see how you can get your hands on one! ORCA is excited to play a part in getting these incredible cards into the hands of transit riders, and we can’t wait to see them in use throughout the games and beyond. Now, it’s almost time to kick off a summer of community, culture, and pure fun. Let’s gooooo!

SUMMARY OF ALL TRANSIT INVESTMENTS: • 280,000 bus trips each year (100,000 more trips than today). • Better bus service at all times of day,

including more mid-day, overnight, and weekend trips. • 22,000 free ORCA cards for low-income people, students, older adults, and families with young children (12,000 more than today). • Seattle Streetcar operations, providing access to local destinations, jobs, schools, and the regional light rail network. • Construction projects to fix pinchpoints where buses get delayed, make bus stops more accessible and comfortable, and improve transit reliability. • Support the design and delivery of Sound Transit’s West Seattle Link Extension, Ballard Link Extension, and Graham Street Station. The proposal was developed through community input on programs and services including surveys, community events, and ongoing discussions with the Transit Advisory Board and Transportation Equity Workgroup. The measure also builds on the in-depth public engagement and planning that led to the 20-year Seattle Transportation Plan. Seattle City Council will now review the proposal. Council is expected to hear public comments, deliberate on the measure, and finalize the Seattle Transit Measure Renewal Proposal for potential referral to voters.

Alison Bremner (Tlingit) is a multidisciplinary artist born and raised in Southeast Alaska and now based in King County. Working across painting, woodcarving, and digital media, her practice is grounded in Northwest Coast formline design and engages themes of continuity, identity, and humor, bridging traditional Tlingit visual language with the present. Bremner studied with Tsimshian master carvers David A. Boxley and David R. Boxley, and is active in the ongoing revitalization and evolution of Tlingit art, language, and culture. In addition to her contemporary work, she creates pieces for traditional and ceremonial use within the Tlingit community.

Her work has been exhibited widely and is held in the collections of major institutions including the Burke Museum, Frye Art Museum, Portland Art Museum, and the British Museum.

A key priority will be to create frequent transit service throughout the entire day including nights, weekends, and mid-days. Data shows that ridership during these offpeak times has grown faster compared to traditional peak commute times in recent years. Frequent all-day transit service makes living without a car a more realistic option more Seattle residents. The funding is also used to pay for targeted construction projects to reduce transit delays at pinch points and build other improvements around bus stops. Expanding affordable access to transit: The measure would also more than double the number of free ORCA cards given to people who need them most. This will add 12,000 more free ORCA cards for people who are Housing Choice Voucher participants, adding to the 10,000 free ORCA cards currently given to Seattle Promise Scholars, low-income Seattle Preschool families, and Seattle Housing Authority residents. Free transit passes make it more affordable for people to reach jobs, school, services, and other daily needs. This reduces transportation costs and makes it more affordable to live in Seattle without owning a car.

Alison Bremner. Commemorative SEA26 ORCA Card, 2026.

• Promotion Duration: June 1, 2026 to August 31, 2026 (3 months) • Pass Usage: 3-day passes must be used for three consecutive days and are best suited for riders expecting to take transit more than two times per day for three days in a row. • *Unlimited Travel: Purchase one pass to ride and transfer between all eligible ORCA agencies for three consecutive days. Additional E-purse funds may be required to cover trips on King County Water Taxi, Seattle Center Monorail and Sounder trains. • Exclusions: 3-day pass does not include fares for Washington State Ferries, Kitsap Transit Fast Ferries, and select regional services. “Whether you are a visiting soccer fan seeing the sights or a local attending big summer events, the new 3-day ORCA pass makes it easier than ever to ride transit and leave the driving to us,” said Christina O’Claire, ORCA Joint Board Chair and King County Metro Mobility Division Director. “Transit is the right choice this summer, offering a stress-free way to get where you’re going without the parking and traffic hassles.” After August 31, 2026, ORCA will review options for extending the promotional 3-day pass fare. Staff Report

S

eattle will not just host the 2026 FIFA™ World Cup. For nearly a month, the city will become a place to watch it together. Six matches will be played at Seattle Stadium, the temporary FIFA name for Lumen Field, between June 15 and July 6. But the viewing experience will stretch well beyond the stadium gates, with free public fan zones, neighborhood pubs, waterfront gatherings, downtown watch parties and home viewing options for fans who want to follow the tournament in their own way. Seattle’s match schedule begins Monday, June 15, at noon with Belgium vs. Egypt. The biggest local draw will likely be Friday, June 19, when the United States plays Australia at noon. Seattle will also host Bosnia-Herzegovina vs. Qatar on Wednesday, June 24, Egypt vs. Iran on Friday, June 26, a Round of 32 match on Wednesday, July 1, and a Round of 16 match on Monday, July 6. The first decision for fans is simple: do you want a stadium-adjacent crowd, a free public watch party, a neighborhood bar or a quieter home setup?

FOR THE BIG PUBLIC EXPERIENCE

Seattle’s official fan celebrations will run along the city’s “Unity Loop,” connecting major public gathering places downtown and near Seattle Center. Seattle Center will be one of the easiest places to start. The Let’s Play SEA ’26 World Soccer Fan Celebration will use the Armory as an indoor, all-weather viewing hub with food, seating and big-screen match viewing. Outdoor programming is also planned around the campus, including music, public

art, cultural programming and familyfriendly activities. Waterfront Park will offer another free public viewing option. Pier 62 is expected to host soccer-focused programming with the Sounders, Reign and RAVE Foundation, including a floating mini pitch, live entertainment, food and waterfront watch parties. Downtown, Seattle Soccer House at Pacific Place will offer a free, all-ages indoor fan experience with a large screen, local food and entertainment. It may be a good option for people who want the energy of a crowd without committing to an outdoor setting. Near the stadium, Victory Hall in SODO will give fans a game-day atmosphere close to the action. That location is likely to draw people who want to be near the stadium before, during or after matches without needing a ticket.

FOR A NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH PARTY

Not every good World Cup experience needs to happen in a fan zone. Soccer-friendly pubs and neighborhood bars are likely to be busy throughout the tournament, especially for U.S. matches, knockout rounds and weekend games. The best choice will depend on the kind of crowd you want. Queen Anne Beerhall is a natural option for people who want communal tables, big energy and a location close to Seattle Center. Fremont’s George and Dragon has long been known as one of Seattle’s classic soccer pubs. Kells Irish Pub near Pike Place Market offers a downtown option within walking distance of the waterfront. Rough & Tumble in Ballard and Columbia City gives fans a sports bar centered on women’s sports that also draws strong crowds for major soccer

SEATTLEFWC26

Where to Watch the World Cup

Representatives from SeattleFWC26, First & Goal Inc., and regional transportation agencies stand with Gov. Bob Ferguson, King County Executive Girmay Zahilay, and Seattle Mayor Katie B. Wilson outside Seattle Stadium. events. Atlantic Crossing in Green Lake is another reliable pub for fans who want a dedicated soccer atmosphere. For any bar or restaurant, the same advice applies: check hours, confirm the match will be shown, and make reservations if the venue allows it. The U.S. match on June 19 and the knockout rounds will be especially crowded.

FOR WATCHING AT HOME

Fans who want to avoid crowds can still follow the tournament from home. In the United States, World Cup broadcast rights are held by FOX in English and Telemundo in Spanish. Matches are expected to air across FOX, FS1, Telemundo and Universo, with streaming options available

through each broadcaster’s platforms. Because match times will vary, home viewers should check the daily schedule before making plans. Seattle’s local matches include midday games, an evening match and two knockout-round games.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR SPOT

The best viewing location depends on the day. Families may prefer Seattle Center, Pacific Place or the waterfront. Fans looking for noise and intensity may choose Victory Hall or a soccer pub. County Council Committee Takes Up Inspector General Proposal

A

King County Council committee was scheduled to consider a proposal Tuesday that would create an Inspector General Division within the Office of Public Complaints and Tax Advisor. The legislation is sponsored by Councilmembers Rod Dembowski, Reagan Dunn, Sarah Perry and Pete von Reichbauer. It comes as the county continues to investigate allegations of potential fraud

involving grantees funded through the Department of Community and Human Services. The proposal follows a reform package approved by the council last year to strengthen oversight of taxpayer-funded DCHS grants. That action came after an audit and Office of the Ombuds investigation identified oversight failures and potential fraud in county contracts. A 2025 joint report from the King County Auditor and

Ombuds also pointed to gaps in financial oversight and reporting systems. The Government Accountability and Oversight Committee meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, June 9, after the Queen Anne & Magnolia News press deadline. The meeting was to be held as a hybrid meeting at the King County Courthouse and streamed live on KCTV.
