Local music teacher inspires Seattle families

Summer Rognlie Trisler is the brains and talent behind Sunshine Music Together. She is a classically trained Broadway actress and has been educating and entertaining Seattle children since 2006.

Music Together classes “provide a fun, comfortable environment for children around the world to make music with their families” according to the website.

Sunshine Music Together is a local affiliate of the national organization. It currently offers classes on Zoom and in-person at four Seattle locations: the original studio in Queen Anne, Fauntleroy Schoolhouse in West Seattle, The Nest in Green Lake and the newest studio on West Government Way in Magnolia.

Performing under her maiden name Summer Rognlie, Trisler once starred on Broadway and London’s West End in musicals like “Cats,” “Mama Mia!” and as the title role in “Maddie.”

When she became a mother,

the Broadway schedule — with eight shows a week and only one day off — was tough to keep.

But she recalls attending Music Together classes with her daughter and describes them as some of the happiest memories of her life.

“I remember sitting there thinking what bliss this was, what a stellar program this was, and I knew then and there this would be something I’d have to pursue,” Trisler said.

Trisler trained at the Princeton Center for Music and Young Children and opened her first Sunshine Music Together location in 2006. The classes are a research and evidence-based music development program for young children and their parents or caregivers.

As stated on the website, “Music Together helps children of all ages — babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and big kids — discover their inner music-maker by playing with the grownups they love.”

I will say this, though, COVID has its productive side … eventually.

There is plenty of time to think. Plenty of time to cozy into the simplicities of daily life. It reminds me of learning to swim when I was a kid, how I had to stop trying to control the weight of my limbs, an equilibrium entirely new to my senses. I had to believe that the chlorinated paradise of a new and irresistible Esther Williams swimming pool would eventually hold up every panicked part of me.

So, equilibrium. That’s one thing I’ve thought a lot about as the walls close in. The roots of a word like “equilibrium” run deep.

So deep, I now imagine the delicate stems they hold up, which — for all the intuitive reasons thoughts come to us — unlocks thoughts of G. Herein lies the problem: G. throws off my equilibrium. G. is a stem that could snap.

G. is the last friend I saw before this latest variant kicked me in the butt, so our visit lingers in mind like a song I can’t stop humming.

When part of me says “yes, I love this song,” and part of me says, “no, stop.” And I mean it, stop.

It’s always the same result with G. I start out happy to share a conversation because that’s what G. says she loves about our friendship, the conversation, and I like the sound of that.

But what we have is not a conversation. What we have is her telling me how wrong I am.

About most things. Most of the time. And what she was so, so, sure about this time, well, I didn’t think was true. I knew this even as she spoke. As soon as I got home, I fact-checked her claim, the one that made her say, “You know what your real problem is?”

My real problem. My mouth dropped open. I was caught in a feeling near to grief, but not quite grief, more a sense of separation, of a divide.

That’s it!

I thought I’d have more trouble defining it, but “divide” describes G. and me to a T. Like too many Americans, we are living parallel realities, listening to parallel news, reading parallel information.

“They” think this, and “we” think that, and we see less and less of each other. I think this even as I fact-check her claim to learn that she was mistaken, her facts are off. The Big Lie is still a lie.

I have a sudden vision of myself clinging to an even keel, and not the other something that can rush in to capsize us when we stop listening and talk to each other like we are daft. Something callous.

I know G. is changing, and I am changing, and the world is constantly changing — so much — yet, we don’t seem to be able to change our dialogue so that it’s not the same old “your side vs.

I’m leaving out a lot of our decade-long history because another thing about Covid is that everything, including my word count, feels limited.

Something is easing, really easing. And this something, whatever it is, is clearly trying to ... wait, doesn’t our head-to-toe cellularrenewal-process take around 10 years?

Maybe that’s what is happening.

In what seems like a gift of timing, I have not only accepted the imposed truth of a virus but applied it on a personal level. I’ve seen my way through more of my limits and limitations, and, with that, considering what and who they are. This has been agonizing and as necessary as going through my mother’s closet after she died, when I could feel new ways of thinking about her, what it was like to dress like her, be her: a surrendering, an unearthing, a privilege.

MEALS, FROM PAGE 1 “We are going to keep expanding the neighborhoods but just want to continue step by step to learn along the way and refine along the way,” Metzger said.

“We definitely want to expand and bring the service to more people. Eventually we’d like to bring it to the greater Seattle area and the east side. We’re really driven, and it’s so gratifying to help busy families.”

While similar to other meal services, Metzger said The Speedy Dish is different because the meals are made locally, they are faster to prepare and are geared toward families. She describes the meals as “almost-ready meals.”

Every week, The Speedy Dish staff prepare and deliver bags filled with meal kits for the week.

Individual ingredients, like caramelized onions or different proteins, are prepared in advance and portioned out. Instructions are included in each meal kit and the

different meals can be assembled in 20 minutes or less.

Metzger said the recipes are developed by Skloven to suit the palates of the pickiest eaters, including children.

“We want it to be nutritious but to feel approachable overall to families,” she said, adding ingredients can easily be modified to suit different preferences.

The meal kits are also ideal for home cooks of every skill level.

Metzger said one customer said he typically doesn’t cook but prepares The Speedy Dish meals because they are easy to make, but more experienced cooks like scratch-made flavors and fresh ingredients. People can order either grab-and-go lunches or meals ready to heat. Servings are made for two but can be easily adjusted to accommodate more people when ordering.

“The feedback from our customers has been really, really positive,” she said.

Meal kits are assembled and

delivered on Tuesdays. People can place orders for the following week on Wednesdays. Metzger said by having orders placed by Wednesday night, she can order the proper amount of food from vendors, eliminating food waste.

“We try to be as sustainable as possible,” Metzger said, adding meals are delivered in reusable bags and ice packs that are picked up when a future delivery is made.

“So that is a key thing that people have been really excited about.”

Metzger said most of The Speedy Dish’s customers are women so far, but men take advantage of the lunches-to-go option for themselves or meals or to offset those prepared at home.

“We feel that we have something that benefits someone’s lives, so we really want to keep doing that,” Metzger said.

What did praying mantises evolve from?

When you think of the Jurassic Period, you might think of dinosaurs, but all kinds of insects, including praying mantises, roamed the Earth back then, too.

Some of the mantises died and fossilized into rock and amber, which helped to preserve them for hundreds of millions of years.

As scientists uncover these fossils in modern times, they can learn more about the life histories of insects.

That’s what I found out from my friend Elizabeth Murray, an entomologist at Washington State University, who is very curious about the diversity of insects on our planet.

She said that in addition to fossils, scientists will sometimes study insects’ DNA, or their genetic material, to learn about how the insects evolved and any ancestors they might have in common.

If you’re like me, you might be surprised to learn that mantises share a common ancestor with another well-known insect.

“We have pieces of evidence that come together and show that cockroaches and mantises are most closely related,” Murray said.

“They had a common ancestor that maybe even looked like a mix of both insects.”

Like a lot of insects, cockroaches and mantises both have six legs and three main body segments.

They not only share a genetic history but also lay their eggs in a similar way. Both cockroaches and

mantises make a special kind of case to protect their eggs.

The ability to build a tough egg case, or what scientists call an ootheca, helps give the insects an advantage as they protect their tiny eggs from dangers like parasites, predators or weather.

Over hundreds of millions of years, the traits and abilities that help different insects survive have been passed down from parents to their offspring.

Murray reminded me that when we talk about how an insect evolves, we are talking about all of

It’s a pretty big tree, too. Murray told me that there are at least a couple million known insect species, but there are some estimates that there might be 10 million insect species on our planet.

Saul hopes to continue on her career path at Aegis, feeling there is much more room to grow and advance.

When asked about the Care Director of the Year award and what it meant to her, she humbly replied, “This is more of a recognition of my entire team and what we were able to accomplish together.”

Music Together has grown to one of the largest Music Together franchises in the world and has won eight Golden Teddy Awards for Best Music Program in Seattle. Trisler says it was “such an honor to be nominated but to win the Golden Teddy Award for eight years was a beautiful validation from our families.” “ It was a joy to know that our love for the program and our love for teaching was felt throughout the community,” she said.

To say that the past two years have been challenging is an understatement, Trisler said.

As a business, Sunshine Music Together has always followed Seattle Public Schools in terms of school closures for vacations and snow days. But when the schools shut down in 2020, Trisler exercised her flexibility to keep the music going. With only two weeks remaining in their regular winter semester, Sunshine Music Together immediately pivoted to online learning without missing a beat.

“I love the new studio because it is a beautiful, light-filled space that allows our families to come together to make music and memories free from the worry of being too close to the other students."

— Summer Trisler Sunshine Music Together founder Those first weeks of remote learning included some 20-hour work days while she taught herself and her staff how to teach music classes to babies online. They experimented with Facebook Live and some pre-recorded sessions but ultimately settled on the Zoom format until they were able to reopen safely.

“The arts in any format are crucial for building resilience, civility and identity,” she said. “I’d like to think we’re helping these young children in the beginning of their lives to go out and make a positive difference in the world.”

During the shutdown, Trisler was on the lookout for an additional space that provide could

more breathing room for her teachers and families. Thanks to a Working Washington Grant for BIPOC and women-owned small businesses, she was able to lease and transform a 1,500-squarefoot space near her home in Magnolia.

“I love the new studio because it is a beautiful, light-filled space that allows our families to come together to make music and memories free from the worry of being too close to the other students,” Trisler said.

To date, there have been no cases transmitted in their classes.

Seattle Opera announces 2022-23 season

Seattle Opera General Director Christina Scheppelmann announced the lineup of repertoire and artists for Seattle Opera’s 2022/23 season, which will bring a poignant world premiere “A Thousand Splendid Suns,” a concert performance of a French powerhouse, “Samson and Delilah,” and stagings of three favorites “The Elixir of Love,” “Tristan and Isolde” and “La traviata,” to the Seattle Opera stage.

Performing these works will be over 50 mainstage soloists, including a dozen Seattle Opera debuts.

“Next season is a reminder of all that live opera can be,” General Director Christina Scheppelmann said in a press release. “After an extended period of restrictions, we are thrilled to offer an expansive vision of the operatic universe that encompasses a remarkable breadth of stories and operatic styles.

Music is a window to the world, and we cannot wait to show that in full force once again.”

Headlining the season is the world premiere of “A Thousand Splendid Suns,” now through March 11 at McCaw Hall), an adaptation of Khaled Hosseini’s best-selling novel.

Seattle Opera will kick off its 2022-23 season with Gaetano Donizetti’s comedy “The Elixir of Love,” Aug. 6–Aug. 20 at McCaw

Hall. Following an innovative film adaptation of the opera in 2020, Seattle Opera is excited to bring this bubbly production from Santa Fe Opera to the McCaw Hall stage. Conductor Giampaolo Bisanti, recently appointed Music Director of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège, will join stage director Stephen Lawless at the helm of an intoxicating cast of new faces and Seattle favorites.

Georgian soprano Salome Jicia makes her Seattle Opera debut as Adina alongside Samoan tenor Amitai Pati, who debuts as Nemorino. Italian bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni will fill the role of Dulcamara.

Continuing its longstanding tradition of imaginative Wagner productions, Seattle Opera next presents the revolutionary Tristan and Isolde, Oct. 15–29 at McCaw Hall. This production, led by Argentinian stage director Marcelo Lombardero and the electrifying conductor Jordan de Souza, draws on the wealth of opera stagings being mounted throughout South America.

Scheppelmann hopes this production will bring more attention to South America’s rich operatic history.

“Opera is an international art form,” Scheppelmann said in a press release. “It is crucial that we continue working with creators from abroad to maintain opera’s

vibrancy. Argentina has a strong operatic tradition and many fine opera houses, and we are excited to have the opportunity to work with the creative team from the Teatro Argentino de la Plata. I hope their perspective will help audiences in Seattle hear this music with fresh ears.”

Singing the lead roles are Mary Elizabeth Williams, who returns to McCaw Hall as Isolde; celebrated Heldentenor Stefan Vinke in the role of Tristan; and Amber Wagner in her Seattle Opera debut as Brangäne.

The season proceeds with a landmark concert presentation of a work that has not appeared on the Seattle Opera stage since 1965: Camille SaintSaëns’s “Samson and Delilah,” Jan. 20 and Jan. 22, 2023 at McCaw Hall. This concert performance, led by Seattle Symphony conductor emeritus Ludovic Morlot, will feature Tacoma native J’Nai Bridges in her Seattle Opera debut as Delilah.

“I have made many incredible debuts in my career thus far, but making my Seattle Opera debut brings me an unmatched sense of pride and accomplishment,” Bridges said in a press release.

“Seattle/Tacoma/Lakewood have poured so much love and support into me and I am beyond excited to share my artistry with my first supporters, my home.”

Joining Bridges are internationally celebrated tenor Yonghoon Lee making his Seattle Opera debut as Samson, along with audience favorite Greer Grimsley as the High Priest of Dagon.

Famous for its exhilarating bacchanale and Delilah’s sensual aria “Mon coeur s’ouvre à ta voix,” this biblical tale of power, seduction, and vengeance is a sonic spectacle that is not to be missed.

Seattle Opera will close its season with perennial favorite “La traviata,” May 6–19, 2023, at McCaw Hall. Giuseppe Verdi’s tragic tale of a Parisian socialite who combats entrenched social convention to find enduring love, before succumbing to a deadly disease. This glamorous co-production with Washington National Opera stages the grandeur and elegance of nineteenthcentury Parisian high society with stage direction by Francesca Zambello and costumes by Tony Award®-winning Costume Designer Jess Goldstein. Conductor Carlo Montanaro returns to Seattle Opera to continue his run of celebrated Verdi productions at McCaw Hall, including Il trovatore (’19), Rigoletto (’19), and Nabucco (’15).

Four internationally heralded singers will make their Seattle Opera debuts in the opera’s lead roles: Armenian soprano Mané Galoyan and South African

soprano Vuvu Mpofu appear as Violetta, while tenors Rame Lahaj and Duke Kim (2021 grand finals winner, Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions) fill the role of Alfredo.
