Madrona entrepreneur creates platform to make healthcare more accessible

QA&Mag News editor Madrona resident and entrepreneur Megan Haas’s idea for a holistic healthcare platform that allows people to manage their health while connecting with other people and practitioners began percolating 15 years ago.

The need for that platform became even more of a priority when her daughter started experiencing food texture aversions that became debilitating. Haas said wished she had a space where she could share her burdens with others facing similar situations because she felt alone, with no one to talk to. When she joined Twitter, she saw many people felt the same way as she did.

“We want to connect, but there are so few authentic places for us to do that,” Haas said.

So, Haas did what she has years of experience doing: taking an idea, making connections with the right people, collaborating and transforming those ideas into a reality. Haas, who co-developed

the company Utilikilts, which specializes in making kilts, in 2000, is now focused on something even bigger: untangling the intimidating web of the healthcare system. With a skilled team of web designers behind her, Haas’s vision includes answering the questions of how do people build self knowledge around health, and how do they collaborate with others in the process?

For Haas, the answer to those questions is her online health platform Kinnected.

In an email, Haas said, with Kinnected, she is creating “a culture and a community-based, free, global public health system that does everything that the current ones don’t,” for example, by “developing the action steps toward helping people feel seen, hear, inspired, acknowledged and celebrated for their health journeys.”

Haas also took some inspiration from two unlikely allies: Mr. Rogers and Wonder Woman.

“Because I really feel you need a helper and a fighter at the same time,” she said.

“It’s a gentle, nonthreatening, non-clinical way of looking at healthcare.”

Through the different elements of her website, Haas said, people can engage in their health in “a kind and supportive way.” The name Kinnected combines all the elements Haas wants the platform to stand for: kin, kinship and kinetic.

“We don’t have anything that creates a sense of worldwide kinship,” Haas said.

QA Helpline collecting Thanksgiving bags

Queen Anne Helpline is collecting bags of groceries that will be donated to older neighbors to ensure they have a good Thanksgiving. The goal is to collect at least 100 seniors in the community.

Bags should include: two cans of vegetables (one corn, one green bean); a package of mashed potatoes; a package of stuffing/dressing; a can/jar of cranberry sauce; a can/jar/packet of gravy; two fresh oranges; two fresh apples; a box of instant oatmeal; package of cookies; two individual serving boxes/cans of juice.

QA Chamber collecting donations for lights

The Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce is accepting donations for the Holiday Tree Lighting on the Ave 2020. Sponsors are needed to help light up all the remaining trees. Cost of a sponsorship is $225, which includes a sign that can be decorated to hang on trees.

SPR seeks input on Queen Anne park Seattle Parks and Recreation is beginning the renovation of the Soundview Terrace Park, 2500 11th Ave. W., in Queen Anne. SPR is asking residents to participate in a short survey, https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/YGJ9R9H, to provide input on two proposed play area options.

As part of the project and to improve accessibility, the rubberized surface slope and engineer wood fibers will be replaced with new playground grass. The new play equipment will be installed in early

spring of 2021.

Funding for this play area project is provided by the Seattle Park District. The Seattle Park District helps improve and rehabilitate community centers, preserves the urban forest, performs maintenance of parks and facilities, provides recreation opportunities for people from under-served communities, supports programs, and acquires and develops new park land.

Why do mushrooms grow in rings?

When you see a ring of mushrooms, it’s likely they are exploring for food under the ground.

Giant mushrooms in your backyard are not animals or plants. They are part of another class of living organisms called fungi. But like you and me, they do need food to survive.

That’s what I found out from my friend David Wheeler, an assistant professor at Washington State University, who knows a lot about fungi.

He said the mushrooms are just one part of fungi. The other part that explores the soil for food actually lives under the soil.

This part is called the mycelium and looks a bit like cobwebs or stretched out cotton candy.

Mycelium help the fungi explore different spaces and absorb nutrients from things like dead logs or decaying leaves.

Wheeler said we might think about the way a mushroom ring forms, including how the mycelium spreads out, as if it were a ripple in a pond.

Just as ripple starts with a raindrop or stone, a mushroom ring begins with a tiny spore.

To help grow new fungi, mushrooms will release spores, which are sort of like seeds. After a mushroom releases the spores, they float through the air and when they land in soil, the mycelium begins to grow beneath it.

It starts expanding outward from the place where the spore landed. This allows the fungi to cover a lot of ground on the hunt for food.

It’s at the outer edge of the mycelium where we see the ring of mushrooms grow up from the soil. I found out there are some mushroom rings that have been around for a really long time. For instance, one mushroom ring in France has been around almost 700 years.

As the fungi spread out in search of food, the ring got wider and wider. Now, the ring

is almost a half-mile wide. You would have to walk the length of eight football fields to get from one side to the other.

Even though fungi don’t have legs, they sure know how to go the distance. And a big part of that has to do with their mycelium.

“Every step you take in the forest, under one foot — even one kid foot — there could be lots of cells of mycelium,” Wheeler said.

Wheeler also told me that fungi sometimes compete for food. If you look at the mushroom ring in your back yard, you may notice something unusual about the grass around it.

Sometimes grass inside the ring may be

brown, and the grass inside the ring might be bright green. That’s because fungi and grass both like to eat the same thing.

They are both after the nutrients in the soil.

But as the fungi grow, they can steal nutrients away faster than the grass can handle.

You know, it’s great to hear you are observing nature in your own backyard. It’s a good reminder that we can find science questions almost anywhere in this big, wide world — even in a ring of mushrooms.

Let us note the parallel between joy and embracing, and how one lingering hug has never been more beneficial than now.

At the time of the events set forth herein, Defendant Edwards, was an employee, servant and/or agent of Defendant Pinchiff Mechanical, acting within the course and scope of employment or under its direct control or under such other circumstances as to justify imputing responsibility for the careless, negligent and reckless acts complained of herein.

6. This Court has jurisdiction and venue over the Defendants, the subject matter and persons of the parties pursuant to RCW 4.12.020(3) and RCW 4.12.025.

II. FACTS OF CLAIM 7. On August 18, 2017, Plaintiff Aicher was driving his 2008 Hyundai Accent with his wife, LeAnn Aicher, in the front passenger seat. They were traveling southbound in the number two lane of I-5 passing milepost 167 and the Mercer Island exit.

8. Defendant Edwards was driving a 2000 Isuzu NPR box truck belonging to Defendant Pinchiff Mechanical. He was traveling southbound in the number two lane of I-5 directly behind Plaintiff Aicher. Defendant Edwards looked back and when he turned to look forward again traffic had slowed. Defendant Edwards steered left in an attempt to avoid colliding with the Plaintiff Aicher, but was unsuccessful. Defendant Edwards struck Plaintiff Aicher’s vehicle and then struck another vehicle driven by Michael O’Brien.

III. FAULT OF DEFENDANTS 9. The foregoing collision was the proximate result of the negligence of Defendant Edwards, who was operating in the course and scope of his employment with Defendant Pinchiff Mechanical, creating vicarious liability for Defendant Pinchiff Mechanical.

IV. INJURIES AND DAMAGES 10. As a direct and proximate result of the foregoing negligence of Defendants, Plaintiff Aicher suffered bodily injuries and has suffered economic and noneconomic damages in amounts to be proven at trial.

V. 11. Plaintiff hereby waives the physician patient privilege ONLY to the extent required by RCW 5.60.060, as limited by the Plaintiff’s constitutional rights of privacy, contractual rights of privacy, and the ethical obligations of physicians and attorneys not to engage in ex parte contact between a treating physician and the patient’s legal adversaries. A spooktacular Halloween In lieu of the regular annual Trick or Treat on the Ave. event, this year the Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce hosted a pumpkin-carving contest in which participants carved their best pumpkins or dressed up in their best costumes, which they then photographed and submitted for judging. KINNECTED, FROM PAGE 3 By using Kinnected, Haas wants people to understand and manage their health in a nonthreatening way — by speaking with others and sharing their worries, experiences and successes, as well as keeping track of their own health history. In turn, people can go to practitioners informed and with better understanding of their healthcare options, thus reducing the guess work and burden placed on practitioners.

“It’s a gentle, non-threatening, non-clinical way of looking at healthcare,” Haas said.

Haas said all the tools on her site, current and coming, are meant to help people support themselves holistically.

An important element to that is communication, and in the next month, Haas said members will be able to reach out to other people they believe might offer them valuable insight or help based on profile information people want to share.

“You don’t have to be helpless,” Haas said. “You can walk someone through, or you can ask to be walked through.”

Another tool is the timeline, which keeps track of all the interactions and entries people make using Kinnected. Similar to that is a tool of which Haas is especially proud: the Care Profile, a collaborative timeline a user can set up for someone in their care. Haas said in an email, “the care profile allows the main caretaker to set up a proxy profile for someone

in their care and invite family or trusted friends in a dedicated space to witness and track care conversations, thus leading to greater offline support and helping establish a level playing field amongst a non-clinical care team when it comes to health improvements or developments.”

Another tool lets people search for all types of health practitioners, who register sign up for the platform using a different, professional path. Only practitioners pay for their membership, but it’s on a sliding scale, Haas said. People can search for practitioners using Kinnected, although they do not give advice. And, by signing up for Kinnected, practitioners can network with other professionals who specialize in their field or share similar interests, philosophies or practices.

While not all the elements on her website are live, Haas said she hopes people will be able to communicate with each other sometime in November, and the care profile and timeline will be ready by spring.

Haas said everything about Kinnected is aimed at making people feel safe and welcome.

Members can share as much or as little of themselves as they wish, and everything is anonymous. No one is ever solicited, and within 24 hours, a person’s information is flushed out.

While Haas said everything she has done professionally has led her to this point, she is not rushing Kinnected. First, she does not have the funding to do so, she said.

“Another reason why it has taken so long is I have tried to put what is inside of me onto there,” Haas said.

She does, however, feel a sense of urgency as more COVID-19 cases sweep across the nation.

“I am truly hoping to make a difference as we go into this next surge by offering a solution to this lethal combination of depression, anxiety and loneliness,” Haas said in an email, adding that so many now are suffering from long-haul COVID symptoms. “Our grief has been magnified and marginalized — so much death, but without a common cultural infrastructure around these aspects of life, we cannot move through death and grief properly.”

While she has immediate goals for Kinnected, Haas said she would also like to expand her vision even further if the site begins to make money: by setting up free wellness center and by giving back to other women who want to advance themselves or their careers but don’t have the means to do so.

“So I want to be able to encourage. I want to be able to fund other women who have such incredibly narrow pathways to funding,” Haas said.
