Trophy Cupcakes founder Jennifer Shea said expanding her business is a delicate dance. While she’s been courted about growing outside the Seattle area, she said staying local allows her to maintain quality while not putting a strain on her team.

She found her new Queen Anne shop

space while browsing commercial real estate sites.

“It’s almost like people who are always looking on Zillow for new houses,” Shea said.

Unlike her other five Trophy Cupcake locations, the Queen Anne shop is smack dab in the middle of a residential neighborhood, where Aegis Living once ran a Queen Bee Café at 223 W. Galer St.

“The space, when it presented itself, it just felt like a slam dunk,” Shea said.

Having mostly been built out, it only took three weeks to change the space to Trophy Cupcakes colors, put in a cupcake case and make a few other slight modifications. Opening the new location just before Christmas had its own challenges, TROPHY, Page 12

Civil justice advocate, Queen Anne resident generates strong endorsements ahead of launch

Washington 36th District House candidate Liz Berry launched her campaign after spending the past month earning endorsements from progressive Seattle councilmembers and state legislators.

Having spent part of her career helping to get women on the Legislature while president of the National

Women’s Political Caucus of Washington, Berry said she’d long desired to serve herself.

She saw a window of opportunity in December, when Rep. Gael Tarleton announced her bid for secretary of state. She’s currently serving her third term in the House of Representatives.

The 36th District candidate is balancing campaigning with her position as director of the Washington State Association of Justice, a Pacific Northwest civil justice advocacy organization. Her father was a trial lawyer in Arizona.

She lives in Queen Anne with her husband, Michael, her son, George, and daughter, Eleanor, who was born in September.

Berry’s mother was a teacher, and served on the Madison School Board in Phoenix in the late ’80s.

Along with expanding funding for public education beyond what is required by the McCleary decision, Berry said she wants to increase access to early education and affordable child care.

“When I go down to Olympia, I don’t see a lot of young moms working, certainly not millennials,” she said.

Berry has the endorsement of Washington’s Paramount Duty cofounder Summer Stinson, a public education advocate who recently encouraged 36th representatives returning to Olympia to work on funding that will help reduce class sizes.

The 36th District candidate said it’s not just class-size reduction, but also increasing student access to nurses, mental health professionals and other support staff that needs to be better funded.

Berry is excited to watch 36th District Rep. Noel Frame work on fixing Washington’s “upside down tax structure.”

Frame is co-chairing a House tax structure work group this session, which will perform economic modeling to determine potential reforms that increase revenue while shifting the burden from low- and middle-income Washingtonians.

Berry said she supports a capital gains tax now to fund child care access. While quality is high in the state, she said, it’s also unaffordable and inaccessible.

“I reject the idea that we can’t fix it now.”

Berry supports a statewide income tax and taking a “holistic approach” to tax reform that includes new progressive revenue sources and closing loopholes.

“I’ve never lived anywhere where there’s no income tax,” Berry said, “so it’s very weird to me. I think all options need to be on the table.”

Increasing tax revenue with progressive reforms will allow the Legislature to boost public education funding and other statewide services and projects, Berry said, including replacing the Magnolia and Ballard bridges.

“We shouldn’t have to sacrifice one for the other just because of funding,” she said.

Another priority issue for Berry in the Legislature would be to take action to reduce gun violence in the state.

Berry attended American University where she earned a bachelor of arts and a certificate in advanced leadership from the School of Public Affairs. She spent a year studying abroad, interning for the first woman mayor of Cape Town, South Africa, and also served as a political intern at the U.S. Embassy in Brussels, Belgium.

In 2007, Berry went to work for newly elected U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, which she did for three years, lastly as her legislative director, in Washington, D.C. The 36th District candidate said Giffords taught her about patience, persistence and how to negotiate and compromise to get things done, which was critical for a Democrat in a

conservative district and state.

“We never dropped a bill without having a Republican cosponsor, and it was really important to reach across the aisle,” Berry said.

She lost friend and fellow staffer Gabe Zimmerman when a gunman opened fire at a public meeting held by Giffords, who was seriously injured. Five other people died in the January 2011 shooting.

After surviving the shooting, Giffords went on to become a strong advocate for gun responsibility.

Berry has been active with the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility. She wants the Legislature to form a gun safety commission, similar to the state’s transportation safety commission. The commission would be able to study and recommend policies lawmakers could get behind, she said.

The 36th District covers a large swath of Port of Seattle waterfront property. Berry has endorsements from Port of Seattle Commissioner Stephanie Bowman and former commissioner Courtney Gregoire, who did not seek re-election last year.

Tarleton has been a strong ally to the maritime industry, Berry said, and she would want to continue that support.

Berry said she supports electrifying the port as quickly as possible and ensuring cruise ships are required to plug in immediately after docking.

Idling cruise ships churn out tons of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and particulate matter. Berry cited a recent New York Times article that detailed how plug-in stations nearly eliminated that exhaust. Plugging in is mandatory in California, Berry said.

Tarleton served on the Interbay Public Development Advisory Committee last year, which drafted recommendations and an implementation plan for repurposing the Washington National Guard’s 25-acre armory site. The Legislature is being asked to fund the creation of an Interbay Community Preservation and Development Authority (ICPDA) to manage its redevelopment, as well as funding to build a new Readiness Center for the National Guard in North Bend.

Gregoire also served on the committee, and both she and Tarleton cautioned using the property for mixed-income housing, citing a need to preserve industrial lands.

Berry said the armory site is a prime piece of industrial land in the heart of Seattle. She understands the need for more affordable housing, but noted Gregoire’s concern about air quality around the site, which is next to a rail yard. Berry said she questions placing vulnerable people in such an environment.

The 36th District candidate said she would work with King County’s new regional homelessness authority to help address the crisis here with state-level funding. She’s hopeful the new authority will be successful, and said she’s spoken with District 7 Seattle City Councilmember Andrew Lewis about it.

Lewis will serve on the board for the new authority and chair Seattle’s Select Committee on Homelessness and Housing Affordability.

“I’m a housing-first kind of person,” Berry said.

On top of addressing climate change through electrification and decarbonization, Berry said she’s a strong supporter of public transit. If elected to serve in the Legislature, she said she would look for opportunities to speed up Sound Transit’s light rail expansion to Ballard.

When it comes to national politics, Berry said she supports U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren for president.

“Whoever wins, of course I’ll support them,” she said. “I want a woman, and a progressive woman — the best of both worlds.”

Safeway, arena signage, hilltop apartment update on Jan. 22 agenda

The Queen Anne Community Council’s Land Use Review Committee will have its first meeting of the new year at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22.

On the agenda is an update on the Queen Anne Safeway redevelopment at 2100 Queen Anne Ave. N. Developer barrientosRYAN has made project changes since its showing at the West Design Review Board last October.

The project includes a 50,000-square-foot urban concept Safeway store, 323 residential units and 344 parking spaces underneath.

The committee will also learn about electronic signage proposals for the Seattle Center arena rebuild.

Last on the agenda is an update on the six-story mixeduse development at 2220 Queen Anne Ave. N., where The Thai Kitchen currently sits on the top of the hill.

Shilshole Development is planning to replace the restaurant with 40-42 apartment units on top of 1,400 square feet of retail space and parking for up to four vehicles.

A number of residents have so far submitted public comment on the project calling the proposed parking inadequate while others have written letters of support.

Do trees still create oxygen and clean the air after their leaves fall off?

he trees that lose their leaves in fall, such as chestnuts, oaks, aspens, and maples, are called deciduous trees. Once they lose their leaves, most aren’t able to take in carbon dioxide gas from the air or produce any oxygen.

That’s what I found out from my friend Kevin Zobrist, a professor of forestry at Washington State University.

“Don’t fret, though,” Zobrist said. “For they more than make up for it in the summer.”

Leaves play a big part in how trees take in carbon dioxide gas from the air and create the oxygen gas that we all breathe. These gases come in and out of a tree through tiny pores on its leaves called stomata.

These gases are part of a process called photosynthesis.

Trees take in carbon dioxide from the air, use sunlight as energy to turn that carbon dioxide into sugars, and then uses those sugars as their food.

In this process, trees also make oxygen.

Photosynthesis actually occurs in the green parts of the leaf called chloroplasts. These

chloroplasts are what give leaves their color.

But as leaves start to lose their green colors in fall and winter, they can no longer do photosynthesis. However, there are some deciduous trees, such as aspens, that have green stems.

Zobrist told me some of these stems can actually do photosynthesis, as well. If the temperatures are warm enough in winter, the stems start to photosynthesize.

But in this case, the tree doesn’t take carbon dioxide from the air. Instead, it uses some carbon dioxide that it makes on its own.

In addition to photosynthesis, trees also go through a process called respiration.

The tree will use some of the sugars it makes from photosynthesis to carry out different jobs in their daily lives.

As the sugar molecules break apart, they release energy. This process requires trees to take

in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. If you’re thinking that sounds just like the opposite of photosynthesis, you are right.

This process happens in both the leaves and the stems.

Trees with green stems may use some of this tree-made carbon dioxide to do photosynthesis after their leaves fall off. Still, there’s not nearly as much photosynthesis going on in winter as there is in summer.

Trees do most of the work creating oxygen and cleaning the air of gases like carbon dioxide in the spring and summer. For the most part, they take a kind of fall and winter vacation.

Still, at any given moment there is a tree on our planet creating the oxygen that we breathe. After all, even though it might be winter where you live, that means it is summer elsewhere on the planet.

While the branches in your neighborhood might be bare, in other parts of the world people are starting to see trees growing their new leaves.

SDOT is leading the year-long BallardInterbay Regional Transportation Study that started last fall and is due to the Legislature by Nov. 1.

36th District Rep. Gael Tarleton was able to get a $750,000 proviso passed last year for the BIRT study, which is a technical transportation evaluation of Ballard and Interbay neighborhoods that will produce recommendations for future system improvements. A final report will include a recommended timeline for replacing the Magnolia and Ballard bridges; there is currently no funding for design or engineering.

Back to drawing board for Magnolia Safeway Review board bringing project back for second Early Design Guidance

The West Design Review Board wants to see a more fleshed out design for a new Magnolia Safeway project that will be topped with 135 condo units and replace the aging Albertsons store.

Security Properties and Bumgardner Architects will have to return for a second Early Design Guidance meeting.

The review board determined Wednesday that the developer can proceed with plans to site parking access for the mixeduse project on 32nd Avenue West, which Bumgardner Architects principal Mark Simpson argued was a critical decision needed in order to advance its design.

amenities, including a public plaza on 32nd.

Security Properties chief development officer John Marasco told the WDRB the project at 2550 32nd Ave. W. will set a precedent for new development in Magnolia Village, which is zoned for growth.

WDRB member and Magnolia resident John Morefield was most critical of the project during the EDG meeting. He felt three architectural options

presented were incomplete, particularly in regard to massing concepts.

The preferred option breaks the building into two blocks, with the south side setback to open up a 19-stall surface parking lot, where residents and shoppers would access a ramp to two levels of underground parking. The Safeway store would be 25,000 square feet, and 135 condo units would be included in six floors on top.

Morefield echoed concerns expressed by some residents about plans to site parking access next to a proposed public plaza. While Safeway is requiring 75 stalls, Simpson said the city doesn’t require any parking for the project. The total proposed stalls for the project are 224.

There are already two surface lots on the property, and delivery trucks currently park on the street at 32nd, which is also used by buses for nearby Catharine Blaine K-8.

Simpson said a mid-block crosswalk between the new plaza and parking lot would help with traffic calming.

Traffic studies also show many students pass the alley heading to and from school along Raye Street.

One resident told the review board she was concerned about cars exiting the site next to a crosswalk, cautioning many children roam freely in the Village. She did say the surface lot would be helpful in directing drivers to the parking garage.

Magnolia Community Council member Cheryl Jacobs supported parking access from 32nd. A midblock crosswalk would be helpful, she said, because people already jaywalk there.

While Morefield disagreed with the project design team’s argument that alley parking access would negatively impact the design, he agreed

with WDRB member Patreese Martin that access on 32nd would limit impacts to adjacent residents with garage access from the alley. The alley would have a loading bay for delivery trucks and angled housing units, to provide privacy for adjacent homes.

The design review board directed the developer to come back with more information about how the project will impact site views and sun exposure for nearby residents and the park and Mounger Pool across the street. The EDG packet included sun/shadow studies, which show the preferred option would create the most shade in the morning and late afternoon during winter months, but relatively little during other parts of the year.

Security Properties believes redevelopment of the Magnolia Albertsons site will be the first mixed-use project with a grocery store to attempt to qualify for the City of Seattle’s Living Building Challenge pilot program, which provides an incentives that allows the building height to reach nearly 68 feet. Simpson said the site is at the bottom of a hill and is the right location for height and density to increase.

Morefield lamented that there was no way of stopping the height increase allowed through the Living Building Challenge pilot, but said he wanted to see those greenbuilding elements applied to the massing for the project, which WDRB member Brian Walter believed would be reflected in a later design.

“I don’t think any of them were developed enough to say, ‘A little bit of this, a little bit of that,’” Morefield said of the three design options presented.

Simpson said the project will address the Living Building Challenge guidelines with materials, beauty, and health and happiness, the last of which

would be satisfied through biophilic design — addressing people’s desire to be connected to nature. This will be partly accomplished with prominent decks, some curved, spiraling forms — to make people think of seashells — and lightercolored materials to better reflect light. The design team is also looking at using recycled materials, Simpson said.

“We feel that this must be a building from the future,” he said.

The project is expected to use 25 percent less energy than what is allowed under the current energy code, and recycle groundwater for non-potable uses; a groundwater seep or seasonal spring is proposed for the plaza.

A solar farm is proposed on the roof of the north block of the development, and a rooftop garden would be on the southern block.

The decision by the review board to have Security Properties and Bumgardner Architects return for a second EDG meeting pushes the timeline for the project out further.

A larger redevelopment project for the Queen Anne Safeway — a 50,000-square-foot store and 325 residential units — squeaked through EDG in October, which allowed developer barrientosRYAN to proceed with its master use permit application.

Magnolia Chamber of Commerce member David Dougherty told the review board the Safeway project would be a boon for the Village, where small businesses have been struggling for years. Studies have found nearly 90 percent of people who shop in Magnolia Village live in the neighborhood. Dougherty said a project that puts more customers in the Village will keep it viable while also providing residents looking to downsize with another housing option.

The first Trophy Cupcakes opened in Wallingford in 2007, and had been years in the making.

While Shea had a passion for baking since she was a child, she said it wasn’t something that was nurtured.

“It was, ‘You should be a doctor. You should be a scientist.’ It wasn’t, ‘What’s your passion?’” she said.

Shea was inspired to start her cupcake business after seeing a shop in New York while hanging out with her girlfriends. She’d gone to Bastyr University to study nutrition and dietetics, and had just passed her board exam, she said, but was feeling creatively unfulfilled.

Rather than jumping into a cupcake venture right away, Shea joined her then-boyfriend and his rock band on a tour that allowed her to bank ideas while traveling Europe and acting as merchandise manager.

Years later, one of those band members told her he was interested in making some investments and to write up a business plan. It wasn’t until four years later, when she met her husband, Mike Williamson, that everything started coming together.

“He really is the one who kicked it into gear and said, ‘Move in with me and write your business plan,’” Shea said.

Williamson ended up quitting his job as director of technology at a small ad firm to partner with Shea on opening Trophy Cupcakes, including developing its website and graphic design.

“He’s a behind-the-scenes guy,” Shea said, “and people don’t realize that we did this 100

percent together.”

Trophy Cupcakes locations are stocked with baked goods that come from a commercial kitchen in Rainier, but the first location in Wallingford produced cupcakes on site.

Shea said they quickly outgrew that 200-square-foot kitchen, boosted by an insatiable demand for Trophy Cupcakes after she was invited to bake for Martha Stewart on her show in 2008.

“That was a sweet spot — not to make a pun — that was a sweet spot for cupcakes,” Shea said of the timing of her business.

After appearing on Martha Stewart, Shea said Trophy Cupcakes was getting calls from around the country, but they weren’t offering shipping. People can now order cupcakes or macaron for pickup at any location a day in advance or 48 hours for cakes and tarts. Trophy also delivers to most zip codes in the Seattle/ Bellevue area.

Trophy Cupcakes joins Top Pot Doughnuts and Molly Moon’s on West Galer Street, each a stone’s throw from each other. Shea said she’s toying with the idea of coining the stretch as “Dessert Row.” “This neighborhood is so fun and familyoriented that I think there’s a lot of opportunity to do some fun stuff,” she said.

Shea met and befriended Molly Moon’s founder Molly Moon Nietzel when she opened her first ice cream shop down the street from Trophy Cupcakes in Wallingford in 2008. She said she’s happy to be part of a community of businesswomen in Seattle who help each other.

When asked her philosophy for running a successful business, Shea said it’s about having passion for what you’re doing and, when it comes to cupcakes, good timing.

“There’s only a one-minute difference from a really good cupcake and a really bad cupcake.”

Seattle Parks and Rec offering scholarships for free access to community pools, swim programs Seattle Parks and Recreation is making access to public pools and swim classes free for anyone who qualifies for an SPR scholarship.

Scholarships are based on income and family size. A family of four with income less than $71,199 per year is eligible. Income and dependency documentation are required, including a 2019 tax form. Approval can take up to several weeks.

An application form can be found at any Seattle community center or pool, or by visiting seattle.gov/parks/find/scholarships-and-financial-aid.

SPR previously offered scholarships for a reduced fee, but this year is offering full fee waivers.

The Queen Anne Block Captains, in conjunction with the Lake City Emergency Communication Hub, is sponsoring a free Stop The Bleed class from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Queen Anne Community Center, 1901 First Ave. W. “Civilians need basic training in Bleeding Control principles so they are able to provide immediate, frontline aid until first responders are able to take over care of an injured person,” according to a Queen Anne Block Captains news release. “Rapid control of bleeding at the scene of the event can be life-saving.”

The one-hour Stop the Bleed presentation includes a video on surviving an active-shooter situation and will be followed by hands-on practice packing wounds and applying tourniquets.

Due to the graphic nature of some of the presentation, attendees are encouraged not to bring young children.

Historical society hosting presentation on Japanese gardens in Queen Anne The Queen Anne Historical Society will host local landscape architect and historian Koichi Kobayashi for presentation on the legacy of Japanese gardens in Queen Anne at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at Aegis of Queen Anne on Galer, 223 W. Galer St. “Kobayashi is a landscape architect, local writer, historian and speaker on Seattle Japanese gardens, including the University of Washington Arboretum and Kubota Garden in south Seattle,” according to a QAHS event announcement.

“He will share upcoming plans for gardens at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bayview Manor, the Japanese Consulate General Residence on Queen Anne and others from outside of Seattle.”
